The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the local surf scene for the next couple of weeks.
Well, to be honest, it’s a pretty slow start. We’ve got a solid stretch of days ahead where the surf is just going to be a struggle. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn't show up until well into the period. We’re looking at a gap of about a week and a half of mostly small, messy, and onshore junk before things start to look up.
For Manhattan Beach and Pier, the first few days are mostly a write-off. The swell is tiny, barely 1ft, and the wind is just all wrong—cross, onshore, just bad news. The wave energy is weak, sitting around 150-170 (moderate energy). It’s not until Thursday the 16th, that we get a little glimmer with a “clean” cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is still puny at 1ft. Honestly, it’s not worth rushing out for.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th brings a little more size, up to 2ft, but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and poor. The energy bumps up into the 300s (moderate), but you’ll be fighting the wind more than catching waves. The following week doesn't offer much relief either, with mostly the same story: small swell, light but onshore breezes, and marginal conditions.
The one standout in this whole forecast is Tuesday the 28th of July. That morning session is looking like the real deal. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the SSW, and the wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the SSE at 9 mph. The combined wave energy is a very solid 655 (strong energy). The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The swell is a touch short in period at 17 seconds, but it’s a long-period groundswell, so it’ll have good shape and energy. The break is consistent, so expect waves, but it's a popular spot, and crowds are likely.
The days leading up to it, like the 26th and 27th, do have some size (5ft and 4ft) but the wind is onshore, ruining the quality. The 28th is the clear winner.
After that, the 29th and 30th slump back into smaller, wind-affected surf again.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are mostly a wait-and-see situation. Don't get your hopes up until that Tuesday the 28th. That's the one to go for.
Rusty.
