Table - best surf conditions forecast for Manhattan Beach and Pier over the next 16 days.
Right. Let’s be straight with you. This is Manhattan Beach and Pier, and it’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead. The next week and a half is looking pretty flat and uninspiring. We’ve got a long run of days where the waves are small and the wind is working against us, so don’t get your hopes up for anything decent until the very end of the forecast window.
The first real chance of something surfable doesn’t arrive until Saturday morning, July 18th. That morning, we’ll see the swell bump up a little to about 4ft out of the SSE. Unfortunately, the wind is cross-shore at 6 mph, and the overall picture is still marginal. The combined energy is moderate (879), which is promising, but it’s not going to be clean or well-shaped. Saturday afternoon the onshore wind kicks up to 12 mph and the whole thing falls apart pretty quickly.
Honestly, there’s not much to get excited about for the rest of the month. Most mornings offer a tiny swell around 1ft to 3ft, with onshore or cross-onshore breezes. The waves are just too small and the conditions too ordinary to recommend a paddle out. If you’re a beginner, anything over 5ft is getting big for you, but that’s not an issue here – these waves are tiny.
Now, here’s the standout, and it’s a long way off: Friday morning, July 24th. This is the one to circle on your calendar. We’ve got a clean, glassy morning with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE at just 3 mph. The swell is only 2ft, but it’s coming from the SSW with a very long period of 24 seconds. That’s groundswell, pure and simple, and it’ll have proper energy behind it – combined energy is a solid 500. The waves will be well-shaped and clean, but because of that long period, it might break a bit straight on the beach. Still, for a clean, fun morning on a longboard or a fish, this is your best bet. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Saturday morning, July 25th, is another decent option. Similar deal – 2ft from the SW, 21-second period, clean with a cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph. Combined energy is 499, so there’s good push. Just keep in mind it’s not as glassy as the Friday before.
Overall, don’t bother until that last week of July. The surf is poor, the wind is mostly rubbish, and you’ll be fighting onshore chop most days. Kite surfers might find something in the stronger afternoon breezes, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a long, dry spell. Hang in there.
