The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one to write. I’ve scanned the whole 16-day window for Lowestoft and the honest truth is, there’s nothing on the table that I’d want to paddle out in. The first recommendation for anything surfable is a no-show, so we’re looking at a blank run from the start right through to the end of the month.
The whole stretch is plagued by persistent cross-shore or cross-onshore winds, most days blowing a fresh breeze at 15-19 mph, keeping the ocean lumpy, choppy, and messy. The swell heights hover around the 1 ft to 4 ft range, but the energy is weak. Early on, the combined energy sits at just 84 (weak), and even when it nudges into triple digits on the 18th and 19th with readings of 115 and 237 (moderate energy), the wind is still wrecking the surface. The waves are short-period, mostly 4 to 9 seconds, meaning they’re wind slop, not groundswell.
For a beginner spot that’s inconsistent, this is a quiet spell. The water temperature on the 14th is 66°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than average for the time of year – very unusual – but it doesn’t help with the lack of surf.
The closest we get to a clean-up is right at the very end on the 29th of July, when a light offshore wind from the west finally shows up in the morning. Even then, the swell is only 1.0 ft with a combined energy of 10 (weak). It’s just not enough to get excited about.
Don’t write it off forever, though. When a spot like this is normally fairly consistent, a blank run like this tends to break eventually. The forecast can change. For now, save the wax for another day.
Rusty.
