The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on offer for Lowestoft over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it's a pretty grim run. We're looking at a solid block of nothingness for the first week. From now right through to the 25th of August, the swell is just too small or the wind is blowing it to bits. You'll see a few pulses of 3ft to 4ft, but the wind is always on it or cross-shore, making it a total write-off. The combined swell energy is weak, barely hitting 159 (moderate) on the 22nd afternoon, but it's all junk.
The only glimmer of hope, and I mean the only one, is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. We've got a 5ft swell rolling in from the S, with a period of 6 seconds. That's short period, windswell, so it won't be the most powerful stuff. But the wind is glassy, mate. Dead calm. Clean conditions. The combined energy shows 143 (moderate), so there's a bit of push. It's rated for beginners, but the swell is 5ft, which is starting to push the limit for a learner. The crowds are noted as "often", so expect a few others with the same idea. If you're a longboarder or on a funboard, you might get a few grovelly ones. It's not a classic, but it's the only time the stars align for a paddle.
After that, it's back to the doldrums. The 27th and 28th drop off a cliff with 0.3ft to 2ft junk. We get a bit of a bump on the 2nd of September, a 4ft N swell, but with a 7-second period and cross-off winds, it's still "poor surf conditions" according to the notes. The rest of the run into early September is tiny and messy.
So, bottom line: if you're desperate, hit the water on the morning of the 26th of August for some glassy, clean, but small waves. Otherwise, this is a resting period.
