The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m struggling to get excited here. The forecast is a long, flat run with very little to grab onto. We’re looking at a stretch from now, the 20th of August, all the way through to the 4th of September, and I can’t find a single day where I’d be rushing to wet my line. There are some small pulses of energy, but the wind and swell quality just never come together. The first solid recommendation doesn’t appear until Sunday the 23rd of August, and even then it’s barely a whisper.
For the whole period, there’s no standout, so I’ll just tell you what’s closest to being okay. Lowestoft is the only spot in the mix. On Sunday the 23rd of August morning, we get a tiny pulse of 3ft swell from the NNE, with a period of 8 seconds—so weak energy (76). The water is about 68°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a bit of a surprise. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW at just 3 mph, so it’ll be clean and glassy. The commentary says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is about as kind as I can be. It’s small, but for a complete beginner, it might be enough to bob around on. It’s inconsistent here, so don’t expect much.
Beyond that, it’s a wasteland. The 28th of August Friday afternoon sees a 4ft swell from the S, period 5 seconds (a weak, short-period windswell, energy 82), and again “surfable waves but very ordinary.” Wind is light cross-off, so clean, but the quality is poor. That’s it. Nothing else in the 16 days even gets a rating worth recommending.
This is a classic case of the area going into a quiet spell. It’s not unusual, but it’s a real bummer when you’re itching for a wave. The setups here are more beach breaks and open coast, and when there’s no proper groundswell, there’s just nothing doing.
Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, I’d be saving my energy. This stretch is a write-off.
Rusty.
