The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – we’ve got a real quiet spell ahead for the Lowestoft area. This isn't a time to get excited; it's a time to be patient.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, I don't see a single moment worth paddling out for. The first possible session that shows any swell comes on Sunday the 23rd of August, but even then, it's a tiny 3 ft wave from the NNE with a short 8-second period. The combined swell energy is weak (73), and the wind is cross or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. It’s a beginner-level wave at best, but honestly, it's poor surf. The water temp is 68°F, which feels much warmer than normal for this time of year.
From there, it’s a long, frustrating run. Through Monday and Tuesday we get some onshore winds with a bit of a bump, but those winds ruin any chance of shape. On Tuesday the 25th, the swell hits 5 ft from the east, but it’s short-period slop at 6 seconds, blowing straight onshore at 19 mph. The energy reaches moderate (149), but it’s completely unsurfable in those conditions – it would be a kite surfer's messy playground, not a paddler's.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is a flat, clean, but empty ocean. We get glassy mornings and some offshore breezes, but the swell is barely a ripple – often 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft. The energy drops to single digits. There’s nothing to ride. The only highlight is the week of September 1st to the 7th, where we see consistent offshore and cross-offshore winds, like on the morning of September 1st from the WNW, but with a pathetic 2 ft wave. Clean as a whistle, but there’s no wave to catch.
To sum it up: this is a total blank for the entire 16-day run. There are no recommendations, no standouts. It’s one of those spells where the ocean just says, "not today." But hey, that's the way it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but as it stands right now, leave your board in the car and go for a walk.
Rusty.
