The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough watch for the next couple of weeks around Lowestoft. The forecast is looking pretty grim for any proper waves.
Right now, and for the next week or more, we’ve got a real flat spell. There’s no surf on the cards worth paddling out for until around Thursday the 23rd of July. That’s a solid stretch of over a week with nothing but junk. The wind is mostly coming from the north and north-east, meaning it’s cross or cross-onshore, and those swells are tiny, short-period junk – like 1ft to 4ft at best with periods of 4 to 7 seconds. That’s just windswash. The combined energy is low, mostly in the double digits (like 37, 25, 14) – it’s just weak and messy.
Now, when we finally get a chance on Thursday the 23rd of July morning, it’s still not exactly firing. A weak 4ft swell from the north-northeast creeps in, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy nudges up to 131 (moderate). But here’s the kicker – the wind swings to a light south-southwest at 6 mph, making it cross-offshore and clean. For a beginner spot that’s inconsistent and fairly exposed to the north, that’s about as good as it’s gonna get in this window. The swell direction (NNE) is pretty much the wrong way for Lowestoft’s optimum from the north, so don’t expect a classic wave – it’ll be ordinary at best, but at least the surface will be clean. Just know crowds are often here, so you won’t be alone.
After that, it’s back to small, choppy, or onshore junk again through the end of July and into the start of August. There’s just not another standout session in this 16-day run. The water temp is 65.3°F, which is a full 5.4° warmer than normal for the time of year – a really unusual warm spell.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, keep an eye on that Thursday morning the 23rd for a clean, albeit tiny, paddle. Otherwise, chase some wind or catch up on your board repairs. It’s a rare run of flatness, but it won’t last forever.
