Alright, it’s Rusty here, and I’m gonna lay it straight for you. We’ve got a long outlook ahead, but I’d love to tell you there’s some magic on the way. Sadly, for Lowestoft, this 16-day stretch is a tough one. The whole period is full of tiny, weak swells and messy wind, with only one real window that you could even call surfable.
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t even arrive until Friday, the 17th of July. From now until then, there’s a long, dry gap of almost two weeks. Starting the 3rd of July through to the 16th, every session is rated as poor. The waves are tiny, often below 3 ft, and the period is short—mostly 4 to 8 seconds—meaning weak, crumbly, onshore slop with no energy. The wind hits mainly onshore or cross-onshore, killing any hope of a clean face. The combined swell energy during that whole stretch is pitiful, mostly single-digit or low double-digit values (the highest is only 25 on the 14th). You’d be better off doing something else.
Now, the one standout in this grim picture is the morning of Friday, 17th of July. We finally see a pulse of swell come through, giving us 4 ft from the East, with a period of 6 seconds. That makes the combined energy the best we’ll see, hitting 80 (moderate wave energy). The wind that morning is light and from the NNW, so a clean cross-offshore breeze should smooth the surface out. At Lowestoft, it’s a beach break that’s fairly exposed to swell from the North, and this easterly direction is not the optimum, but with such small conditions it’s still your best shot. It’s not big—only just over 3 ft—so beginners could have a go, but don’t expect barrels. The water temperature is a very unusual 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit. About the crowds: Lowestoft can be busy, and with this being the only decent window in a fortnight, expect it to be crowded. The afternoon of the 17th gets messy again with a cross-onshore breeze, and after that, Saturday the 18th drops right back to tiny, weak junk.
Overall, it’s a bleak two weeks for wave hunting. There’s no big swell, no long-period groundswell, just one small, clean morning to scratch an itch. If you’re a kite surfer, the afternoon winds and choppy conditions on the 12th and 13th might interest you more than paddle surfing—but for a surfer, the 17th morning is the only game in town. Forecasts can change, but for now, that’s the reality.
Rusty.
