The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s been a flat ol’ stretch for Lowestoft, and that’s the way it’s staying for this whole 16-day window. We’ve got a few little pulses of swell, but nothing that’s really going to get the heart racing. The water is sitting at 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a spring suit, but that’s about the only comfort I can give you.
We start off Sunday 19th July with a 4ft swell from the NNE, period 9 seconds, and the combined energy is weak at 248. But the wind is a cross-shore N at 16 mph, and it’s a mess. It’s a write-off. Monday 20th, the swell drops to 3ft, period drops to 8 seconds, and the wind is still crossing. It’s poor. Tuesday 21st is a write-off too, with tiny 2ft, 6-second junk. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday 22nd morning where the wind goes light cross-off and the wave state is clean, but it’s only 3ft, period 6 seconds. You’d be scratching for a ride.
Thursday 23rd morning is the only real half-chance in the whole run. The swell is 3ft from the N, period 7 seconds, and the combined energy just nudges into the moderate zone at 103. The wind is light NNW at 6 mph, cross-off, and it’s clean. This is a beginner-friendly day, but it’s surfable waves, not a standout. It’s the best we’ve got, and that’s a low bar.
After that, it’s a long, grinding fade. The swell drops to 2ft and below, and by the weekend of 25th-26th July, we’re looking at tiny 1ft, 5-6 second slop. The wind is better, with some cross-off days, but there’s simply no energy. The combined energy dips to single digits and low teens. We go through a full week of flat, tiny waves, with the swell barely registering. By 28th July, we get a bit more wind, but it’s an offshore 25 mph on Tuesday morning, which is too strong for a paddle-out. The afternoon of 28th July has a 3ft swell from the NNW with 7 seconds, and 129 energy, but it’s a fresh offshore wind at 19 mph, and it’s rated as poor surf. This is a wind-swell event, and it’s not clean.
29th July afternoon is the last little flicker: a 4ft, N swell, 8-second period, and 247 energy, with a cross-off W wind at 12 mph, and it’s clean. But the rating is still poor. The wave state is clean, but the overall quality just isn’t there. After that, it’s back to tiny, empty ocean. By the time we hit 3rd August, we’ve got a 0.3ft swell and 1 unit of energy.
Honestly, there is nothing here that’s a standout. It’s a 16-day blank run. For the area, this sort of flat spell isn’t unusual, but it’s a bummer. If you’re desperate for a splash, Thursday morning 23rd July is the only window where you might get a few knee-high, clean waves if you’re a beginner. Otherwise, the board stays in the car. The best thing about this forecast is the warm water, but I’m not here to sell you a swim.
