The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the charts for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty bleak stretch coming up for Lowestoft. The whole 16-day window is a struggle, and I've got to tell you straight up: there's really nothing to get excited about. We're looking at a long, dry period with no real surf to speak of.
The first few days, from Wednesday the 19th right through to the end of the week, are basically a write-off. We're talking tiny, weak swell with a combined energy reading of just 6 to 41, which is nothing. A couple of clean mornings, like Wednesday morning with a light offshore breeze, but the waves are only 1.0 ft from the north, with a short, weak 6-second period. Not worth paddling out for.
We then hit a gap of several days of almost nothing. There's a tiny blip on Sunday morning, August 23rd, when we get some glassy conditions with the wind from the NE at 3 mph. The swell is still small, 2 ft from the NNE with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is 80. It's surfable, but it's ordinary. You could get a few knee-high dribblers, but that's about it. The water is at 69°, which is 6° warmer than usual for this time of year - that's a very unusual anomaly, so the water will feel much warmer than you'd expect.
From there, the rest of the month and into September is a constant theme of poor surf conditions. The wind is a mess, mostly onshore or lumpy cross-shore, and the swell is either tiny or has no period to it. There's a bit of a bump in energy around the 25th of August, with some 5 ft waves from the ENE, but the period is only 7 seconds and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the ESE at 22 mph, making it lumpy and messy. That's just a messy, blown-out day.
The only other time the forecast even rates a "surfable" mention is on Monday, August 31st, and again on Thursday, September 3rd. On September 3rd, we get a moderate offshore wind from the WNW at 12 mph, with 3 ft waves from the NNE, a 7-second period, and a combined energy of 103. It's clean, but the waves are just too small and weak to get excited about. It's a very ordinary 1 out of 10 on the good stuff scale.
So, bottom line: there's no standout session here. This is a classic low-pressure period for Lowestoft, with no proper swell and a lot of wind. If you're desperate, the glassy early morning of August 23rd or the clean offshore on September 3rd might get you a few small ones, but don't hold your breath. It's a tough stretch.
Rusty.
