Alright, what’s the story here, folks. Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you: this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window for Lowestoft is just one long, flat spell of nothing to get excited about. There’s no real swell on offer, just a whole lot of small, weak, wind-affected junk. You’ll be sitting on the beach watching the flags flap, not the waves peel.
The first few days, from Sunday the 12th through the weekend of the 19th, are a complete write-off. We’re looking at tiny, short-period windswell from the northeast, with a combined energy that’s barely a whisper – values in the 4 to 97 range, which is weak. And the wind is just horrible for this break. It’s a constant cross-onshore or cross breeze from the NE, blowing 18 to 19 mph, just making a mess of the water. The water is a very unusual 66°F, which is 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing that’s strange here. For a beginner spot, it’s just messy and lumpy with no push.
There’s a little gap of silence from the 20th, but it’s still the same story. The swell stays tiny, under 4 ft, and the wind is still cross-onshore. It’s not until the 22nd of July that we finally see a change in the wind, with a cross-offshore breeze from the WNW, but the swell is still only 3 ft and from the east, which is not the optimum direction for this break. The water is clean, but it’s small and weak.
The one moment that almost looks interesting is the morning of Wednesday the 23rd of July. The swell from the south comes in at 4 ft, with a combined energy of 114 (moderate), and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW. But the wave comment still says “poor surf conditions,” and the swell period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s just windswell. It’s not going to have any grunt. Then the 24th of July sees a long-period swell of 9 seconds from the north, with a clean offshore wind, but the swell height is only 3 ft and 3 ft. It’s clean, but it’s tiny. The energy readings hit 106 and 136, which is moderate, but for a beach break like Lowestoft, a long-period groundswell at that size is just going to make it fat and close out straight.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there is nothing that stands out as good surf. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer with a big kite than a surfer with a paddle. The wind is too strong and the swell is too small and messy. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s pretty normal. Forecasts can change, but on what we’ve got, leave the board at home.
