The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are mostly a write-off for Little Austi and Main Beach. We’re staring down a long, quiet run, so don’t be in a rush. There’s a promising spike right at the end of the forecast, but you’ll need some patience.

The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real chance to wet a line doesn’t come until Wednesday morning the 19th of August. It’s not huge – a 4ft swell out of the east with a short period of 6 seconds, so it’s a bit weak in the water (231 energy). But the kicker is that offshore-northerly breeze, keeping it clean. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but expect some company – crowds are possible. For a Wednesday morning, it might be worth a look if you’re keen for a few small, clean waves. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore and picks up to 12 mph, and it gets messy.

Thursday the 20th is small again – 2ft from the ESE – and the conditions are just ordinary. Friday the 21st has a similar story: 3ft from the ENE with a light offshore, but the energy is low (68). The afternoon goes glassy, but the swell’s even smaller. Honestly, from Saturday the 22nd right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s mostly flat and not worth paddling out. There’s a lot of days with no surf on offer. The swell barely tops 3ft and the winds are all over the shop.

But then we get a standout. On Wednesday morning the 2nd of September, the ocean wakes up. A solid 6ft swell rolls in from the southeast with a period of 10 seconds, packing a punch with 660 energy. That’s moderate to strong energy, and the conditions? Glassy. Light wind, clean faces. This is the best on offer by a long shot – proper, clean surf with some size. It’s still a fairly consistent break, so the chances of scoring are good. The only catch is that it’s over 5ft, so it might be a bit much for beginners.

By Wednesday afternoon, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SSE (1144 energy – that’s strong) but a light cross-onshore breeze puts a bit of texture on it. Still, for experienced surfers, that’s a solid session with plenty of power. With that size, it’s definitely expert territory.

So to sum it up: don’t bother for the first two weeks. Wait for that Wednesday the 2nd of September morning – that’s your window. Clean, glassy, and a proper southeast groundswell. Keep an eye on it.

Rusty.
