The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, this is Rusty, and I’m giving you the straight talk on Little Austi and Main Beach. The next two weeks are looking fairly bleak, with a long stretch of tiny, weak surf, and only one single pulse of serious energy way out at the end. The water temp is 64°, which is normal for the season.
Starting Wednesday, August 19th, it’s a total bust. A 3ft swell from the ESE with a short period and a cross-shore wind means messy, weak waves. The energy is low (173). Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st bring a little cleaner conditions with offshore winds, but the swell is still a pathetic 3ft from the NE, with a 6-second period – barely a bump. The energy drops from 92 to 46. You might get a surfable wave, but it’s not worth the drive.
From Saturday the 22nd all the way through the end of the month, there’s a long stretch of nothing. Swell heights are under 2ft, with weak energy and onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a brief, clean window on Monday, August 24th afternoon with a 3ft swell from the ENE, but the energy is still weak (50). It’s average, at best.
The only true standout shows up way out on Wednesday, September 2nd. A massive 12ft swell from the SSE with a 12-second period hits, and the energy is a whopping 3688. This is a big, powerful groundswell. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it’s not glassy, but it’s rideable. This is a serious, expert-only swell. At this size, it’s dangerous for anyone but the most experienced. This is a long-range call, so keep an eye on the forecast, but it’s the only game in town. Thursday the 3rd backs down to a 7ft swell from the SE, still with good energy (1072), but the wind turns more onshore, making it rough.
So, the bottom line: the next 12 days are a total flat spell. The only real chance for a wave is that big one on Wednesday, September 2nd. If you’re a seasoned surfer, that’s your moment. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
