Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s size up Little Austi and Main Beach. The outlook starts off a bit rough, but we’ve got a couple of clean windows to target, especially late in the second week.
The forecast kicks off on Wednesday, July 8th, with a 7ft SSE swell, but the period is short at 10 seconds, and it’s coming with a cross-on southerly wind at 12 mph. The combined energy is strong (1452), but the mix of onshore wind and short period leaves it choppy and scrappy. Not the best time to be out. Thursday the 9th stays similar – 6ft dropping to 6ft, still SE with cross-on wind, still lumpy. Friday the 10th remains marginal, though the afternoon brings a light onshore breeze with 6ft SE swell, but it’s still not clean.
The first real standout is Saturday, July 11th. The morning serves up a clean 4ft SE swell with a light offshore northwesterly at just 3 mph. That’s glassy, well-ordered surf. The combined energy is moderate (340), but the cleanliness is what counts here. The afternoon gets smaller – 3ft from the ESE at 11 seconds, with a light cross-off northerly. Still clean, just smaller. That’s your best window in the first week.
Sunday the 12th through to Thursday the 16th morning sees the swell drop way down, with very small waves or flat conditions, and energy close to zero. On Thursday the 16th, a big, poorly organised 10ft SSE pulse shows up, but it’s straight onshore with strong to fresh winds. It’s a mess. This setup looks more interesting for kite-surfing than paddling.
Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th stays rough. Saturday the 18th starts with a weak 2ft swell, then another 10ft onshore blast hits in the afternoon. Sunday the 19th brings another solid 8ft SSE swell, but it’s onshore and wet. Not user-friendly at all.
But then Monday, July 20th, starts to turn. Mornings are still marginal with 7ft SE swell and onshore wind, but the afternoon eases to a light cross-on breeze with 6ft SE swell at 11 seconds. Still not perfect, but improving.
Then Tuesday, July 21st – this is the other standout. Morning brings a clean 5ft SE swell with a light offshore northwesterly again, and the combined energy is moderate (533). The direction is good, the wind is kind, and you’ll have glassy conditions. The afternoon stays clean with 4ft ESE swell and a cross-off northeasterly. This is your best session across the whole run.
Wednesday the 22nd to Thursday the 23rd drop off into smaller, cleaner surf, with 2ft to 3ft ESE swell, but winds stay light and cross-off or cross-shore. Waist-high, tidy waves for a longboard, but nothing special after Tuesday.
Water temperature on Wednesday the 8th is 65°F, which is about normal for the time of year. Nothing unusual.
To sum it up: Saturday the 11th and Tuesday the 21st are the cleanest, most organised days, with offshore winds and decent swell direction. Tuesday the 21st is the pick of the bunch for quality. The rest is either flat, onshore, or messy. There’s a real lull from Sunday the 12th to the 16th, so plan around that.
Rusty.
