Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Little Austi and Main Beach is a real mixed bag, and it’s gonna take some patience. The first week is pretty much a write-off, with barely a ripple and a lot of windy, chopped-up conditions. The real hope is in the second week, where we finally see some clean, glassy windows and a bit of energy. It’s not going to be huge, but for the patient surfer, there are some nice windows.
The opening days are a tough watch. Monday morning the 13th is a total loss with a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the ESE and a cross-off wind making it messy. That carries on through the rest of the week – Tuesday and Wednesday have no swell at all, just a gentle breeze, and by Thursday the 16th, the wind is onshore and strong, making it choppy. Friday the 17th actually sees a pulse of 5 ft swell from the SSE, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds, and the cross-on wind is 12 mph, so it’s a messy, blown-out 5 ft. The combined energy is only 116 (weak), so it’s not worth getting excited about. Saturday the 18th is a little better with 4 ft from the east, but the wind is still not helping.
Now, for the good stuff. The standout window looks like Sunday morning, July 19th. We’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the east, with a period of 9 seconds (moderate period, decent shape), and the wind goes glassy – absolute perfection. The combined energy is 281 (moderate), and the water is a pleasant 65°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. This is your best bet for a clean, fun session. It’s a beach and reef setup, so that long period won’t be an issue. Get on it early, because crowds are possible.
The following Monday morning, July 20th, is also a cracker. Same 5 ft swell from the ENE, but with a clean offshore wind from the NNW at 6 mph. The combined energy hits 323 (moderate), and the period stretches to 10 seconds. This is another solid, clean option. The direction (ENE) is a good match for the spot’s optimum.
After that, the swell drops off a bit. Tuesday the 21st has 4 ft, but the wind is a light cross-shore, and the quality is marginal. Wednesday morning the 22nd has a clean, glassy 3 ft, but it’s small. The end of the week and into the next (July 23rd to 28th) sees a mix of small, clean mornings and choppy afternoons, with the swell bouncing between 2 ft and 4 ft. Nothing stands out as a must-surf, but the clean mornings on the 23rd (2 ft, offshore) and 26th (3 ft, offshore) are worth a look if you’re desperate.
All in all, the 19th and 20th are your golden tickets. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
