Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
Righto, grab a seat. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Little Austi and Main Beach. It’s a bit of a flat spell to kick things off, so don’t bother paddling out for the first few days. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for the time of year, so you won’t need a steamer just yet.
The week starts with a nothing burger. Sunday through to Wednesday are pretty much a write-off with tiny, weak dribble and a cross-off breeze that’s not doing us any favours. The combined energy is in the gutter, reading 100 or less, and it’s staying that way for a few days. There’s a solid gap of quiet days here, so save your wax.
By Thursday the 16th, a bit of a push comes through with a 8ft SSE swell, but it’s short period (7 seconds) and the wind is a nasty cross-onshore that’s going to chop it up. The wave energy is moderate at 532, but the conditions are poor – honestly, this is more of a kite day than a paddle day. Friday the 17th is still marginal, with 5ft to 5ft E swell, but it’s messy and cross-shore, not worth the effort.
Now, hold onto your board, because the real standout is next Sunday, the 19th of July. This is the one. We’ve got a solid 8ft ENE groundswell rolling in with a very long 11-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at 1483. The wind goes glassy in the morning – that’s rare as hen’s teeth – and it’s offshore from the NW, which is the optimum direction for this spot. This is big, clean, and powerful. The waves are going to be proper, but at 8ft, it’s strictly for the experienced crew. Beginners, stay on the sand. The break is a beach and reef mix, so with that long period, it’s going to break a bit straight at the beach, but the reef sections should handle it nicely. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, and with a Sunday like this, expect a few locals out, but it’ll be worth it. This is the best on offer, no question.
Monday the 20th still has some juice, with 7ft ENE swell and clean offshore conditions, but it’s not quite the same quality. The week after that trails off, with smaller, choppier surf and poor conditions through to the end of the 16-day window. The long-range stuff on the 27th is tiny and not worth a mention.
So, bottom line: if you’ve got the skills, be on the water early Sunday the 19th. The rest of the period is a grind.
Rusty.
