The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, putting it in feet and miles. Little Austi and Main Beach is a beach and reef setup, intermediate-level spot. It’s fairly consistent and exposed to ENE swell, with the optimum direction being ENE. Water temp is 64°F, which is about 1°F above average, so nothing out of the ordinary.
The first week or so is a slow burn. From Wednesday the 19th through the following Wednesday, you’re looking at small, weak surf with combined swell energy mostly below 200 (weak to moderate). Winds are a mixed bag, often cross or cross-off, with some onshore.
The real highlight comes on Tuesday the 25th of August in the morning. Swell is about 5ft from the NE, period 7 seconds, and the combined swell energy clocks in at 235 (moderate). What seals the deal is the wind: glassy. That’s the morning to be out there. Clean, glassy conditions, decent wave height. Afternoon on that same day gets cross-onshore, so don’t expect it to last.
Friday the 28th of August offers something too – around 5ft to 5ft from the SSE, combined energy of 355 to 381 (moderate). The wind is clean cross-off, so it’s worth a look, but it’s considered marginal, so keep your expectations in check.
After that, the end of August and start of September sees pulses of SSE swell, but mostly accompanied by onshore or cross-on winds. A period of 12 seconds on the 1st of September hints at some groundswell, with combined energy of 777 (moderate to strong), but the wind is not your friend.
Crowds can be a factor sometimes, so on that standout glassy morning, expect to see a few other locals.
Rusty.
