Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Little Austi and Main Beach is serving up.
Right off the bat, the water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing wild. But the surf story is a real mixed bag. We’ve got a pulse of big, raw swell early on that’s wrecked by the wind, then a long, flat, boring stretch, and then a small but clean window at the end that could be worth the wait.
Tuesday, July 7th starts with a thumping 10-foot SSE swell (combined energy of 2267, that’s strong energy). Sounds great, right? Not so fast – we’ve got a moderate cross-shore wind, so it’s rough and choppy. That size is too much for beginners. By the afternoon, it’s up to 12 feet with a cross-onshore wind, and it’s a complete mess. Stay on the beach.
Wednesday, July 8th hasn’t cleaned up much. Still an 8-foot SE swell in the morning, but the wind is still cross-shore and messy. It drops a little in the afternoon, but the onshore wind just chops it up. Not the day.
By Thursday, July 9th and Friday, July 10th, the swell is dropping into the 5-foot range. Friday afternoon actually sees a light offshore wind, but the waves are small and the report says “marginal,” so nothing to get excited about.
Saturday, July 11th – finally a small moment. A 4-foot SE swell meets a clean, offshore wind from the WNW in the morning. That’s the best of the first week. Clean lines, small fun waves. A good day for a longboard. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell fades a little.
Then we hit a wall. From Sunday, July 12th all the way through Thursday, July 16th, the swell drops below 2 feet and then goes flat. That’s about five days of nothing. The wind is calm, but there’s just no wave energy.
After that flat spell, a new pulse arrives. Saturday, July 18th brings a 3-foot SSE swell with a gentle offshore breeze. The report says “surfable but very ordinary.”
Sunday, July 19th is your standout day. Swell is still small at 3 feet, but it’s coming from the SSE with a super long period of 13 seconds – that’s real groundswell energy. It’ll have push and shape. The morning has a cross-offshore breeze, and by the afternoon it’s a clean offshore from the WNW. Combined energy is 288 (moderate), but that long period means it’ll wrap in nicely for a reef or beach break. It’s small, so don’t expect big barrels, but for clean, fun, organized surf, this is the day to circle.
After that, Monday, July 20th fades back to tiny, poor waves with onshore wind. Wednesday, July 22nd shows a glassy little 1-foot ripple from the ENE, but there’s just no power.
So, the bottom line: the first week is a big, windy, messy washout. Then a flat spell. The best bet is Sunday, July 19th – small, clean, and legit groundswell with offshore wind. That’s your session.
Rusty.
