Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s your local surf outlook for Little Austi and Main Beach. This spot is a beach and reef setup exposed to the ENE, and there’s a big pulse of swell coming, but the first few days are going to be rough.
A solid South-East swell hits on Tuesday 7 July, but it’s crossed up with a south wind at 12 mph, making it ugly. Combined wave energy is running at 2679, but the surf is poor, so skip it. Wednesday 8 July stays average with a 8ft SSE swell and cross-shore winds, still marginal. Thursday 9 July drops to 6ft SE swell, but it’s crossed up again. Water temp is about 65°F, which is normal for this time of year.
Finally, Friday 10 July morning brings a turn. The swell drops to 5ft from the SE, but it goes glassy – no wind at all. It’s clean, with combined energy at a moderate 424, and the surf should be decent for intermediates. This is the first standout. Saturday 11 July stays clean with offshore winds from the WNW at 6 mph, but the swell drops to 4ft SE, still fun. The afternoon sees a 2ft ESE swell with a long 12-second period – that long-period groundswell will wrap in clean and make the point work nicely, but expect longer gaps between sets.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Sunday 12 July through to Thursday 16 July, the size drops fast – 2ft, 2ft, 1.0ft, and then flat. Energy readings hit zero from the 15th. That’s a solid 5-day gap with nothing worth paddling for.
The next real action fires up on Friday 17 July. We get a 6ft SSE groundswell with an 11-second period, combined energy of 698, and offshore winds from the NW at 3 mph. That’s clean, punchy surf, and the morning looks very good. The afternoon holds with a 6ft SSE swell and cross-offshore NE breeze at 6 mph – still clean and solid. This is the best stretch on offer, a true standout for the whole outlook.
Saturday 18 July keeps it going with a 4ft to 4ft SE/SSE swell, light cross-offshore winds, and combined energy around 314 to 319 – clean and fun for a solid session. Sunday 19 July has offshore winds again, NW at 9 mph, and a 4ft SE swell with a 12-second period, so the point will be lined up nicely. Monday 20 July brings fresh offshore winds at 19 mph from the NW, but the swell holds at 4ft SSE – it’s clean but wind-affected, so more for experienced surfers.
From Tuesday 21 July, the swell drops back to under 3ft, and strong winds at 28 mph from the WNW make it a kite-surfing show, not a paddle day. Wednesday 22 July tries to fire up again with a 7ft SE swell, but it’s cross-offshore and the period is only 9 seconds – marginal and a bit chopped up, mostly for the keen crew.
Overall, your best bet is Friday 17 July morning through Sunday 19 July, with the cleanest, biggest, and most consistent waves. Crowds are possible at times, especially on the good days. Keep an eye on the second week – Friday 17 July is the real gem.
Rusty.
