Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get into it. The surf outlook for Little Austi and Main Beach is a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a decent little pulse arriving on Friday the 10th, but then a long stretch of flatness and junk before things start to look interesting again towards the second weekend.
First up, Friday the 10th of July. It’s not a classic, but there’s something to work with. The morning is a bit rough with a 6ft SE swell, period around 9 seconds, and a cross-onshore breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate (542), but the conditions are messy. The afternoon is the real standout here. The wind drops to glassy, a light SSE air at 3 mph, and the swell settles to 5ft from the SE, period bumping up to 10 seconds. That’s clean, glassy surf. The water temp is 65°, which is 0.9° above normal, so about average for this time of year. This is easily the best of the first week.
Saturday the 11th is a drop-off in size but still clean. Morning sees a 3ft ESE swell with a 12-second period, and a light offshore from the NW at 6 mph. That’s clean, fun little waves. The energy is moderate (370). Afternoon is similar, 3ft from the ESE, a cross-off breeze, still clean. It’s a good follow-up session.
Then we hit a wall. From Sunday the 12th right through to Friday the 17th of July, it’s mostly flat or very small (under 2ft), with the wind either cross-off or cross-on. The combined energy drops to double digits or even zero. There’s a full week of nothing worth paddling for. The waves are poor or nonexistent.
Now, the second week brings a flicker of hope. Saturday the 18th of July is the other standout. A clean morning with a 4ft E swell, period 10 seconds, and a light offshore from the NNW at 3 mph. The energy is moderate (279). It’s clean, glassy. The afternoon holds 5ft from the E, period 11 seconds, but the wind picks up to a moderate cross-off from the NNE at 9 mph. Still clean, but the energy is higher (453). This is a solid second-week option.
Sunday the 19th is also good. Morning has a 4ft E swell, period 9 seconds, with a light cross-off NNW breeze at 6 mph. Clean. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-shore.
After that, the surf hangs around the 3ft mark for a few days, but the wind is mostly cross-off, so it’s not terrible. The energy stays moderate. By Wednesday the 22nd, it’s back to very small, glassy conditions, but more for the longboard than a proper session.
The best of the forecast is hands-down Friday afternoon the 10th and Saturday morning the 18th. Both are clean, glassy, with a decent swell from the southeast and east. The break is a beach and reef setup, so it can handle the longer period swell (12 seconds on Saturday the 11th) without closing out too bad. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it’s not a madhouse.
If you’re a beginner, the swell on Friday the 10th is 6ft, which is a bit much. Saturday the 18th at 4ft is more your speed. The swell is over 5ft on Friday, so it’s for intermediate surfers.
So, overall: a decent start, a long flat spell, and then a promising second weekend. The long-range stuff on the 18th is a bit of a gamble, but the signs are good.
Rusty.
