The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Gotta be honest – the next couple of weeks at Little Austi and Main Beach are a tough slog. Small, messy surf and not much to get excited about until way down the track. Let’s go through it.
From Saturday 22nd August through to Saturday 29th August, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, with short periods of 6 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is low, usually under 100 (11 to 120), so there’s just no power. Water temp is 64°, pretty normal for the time of year. Winds are all over the place – cross, cross-on, or light offshore – but even when it’s clean, the waves are too small to bother. Tuesday 25th afternoon sees a bump to 5ft from the NE, but with cross-off wind and marginal conditions, it’s not worth it.
Then from Sunday 30th August through to Saturday 5th September, it’s flat. Waves between 1ft and 3ft, periods up to 11 seconds, but the energy is weak (26 to 103). Winds are often offshore or cross-off, so it’s clean – but there’s nothing to ride.
Sunday 6th September afternoon brings a 4ft SSE swell with 8 seconds and energy of 234 – moderate. But with a 12 mph onshore wind and poor conditions, this beach and reef setup is more for kites than paddles.
The only real standout is Tuesday morning 25th August – 3ft from the NE, 6 seconds, clean with a light offshore breeze. It’s small, but it’s the best you’ll get. Otherwise, it’s a long wait. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
