The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Little Austi and Main Beach.
First up, we gotta be straight with you—this stretch of beach and reef (Little Austi and Main Beach) is looking at a pretty quiet run for the next couple of weeks. The water's sitting at 64° which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so nothin' weird there.
The forecast starts with a bit of a dud on Sunday the 23rd. We're talkin' a tiny 1ft bump from the NE, but with a NNW cross-off breeze it's just not gonna be worth paddlin' out. The combined energy is a measly 9, so there's just no grunt in the water. Monday the 24th ain't much better—still tiny, weak waves and a stiff 12 mph NE breeze blowin' cross-off.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is where things get a little interesting. We've got a morning window with light 6 mph NW offshore winds—that's clean, that's what we want—and the swell bumps up to 5ft from the NE. The combined energy jumps to 286, which is a proper moderate pulse. The period is only 6 seconds though, so it's a bit of a short-period wind swell, meaning it'll be a bit lumpy and walled up, but for a beach break, it's the best we've got. This is the standout for the whole forecast, no question.
After that, Wednesday the 26th turns ugly with a 12 mph S cross-on breeze and choppy conditions. The rest of the week and into the next is just small, weak, and mostly messy. Thursday the 28th morning has a 3ft SSE swell with a 11-second period and a 6 mph SW cross breeze, so it's clean-ish but the size is barely there. The afternoon gets hammered by a 9 mph SE onshore.
Friday the 29th morning has a 2ft SE swell with 9 mph NW offshore winds, clean and rideable, but again, it's tiny. The combined energy is 141—moderate, but the waves just don't have the height to make it fun.
From Sunday the 30th all the way through to the end of the 16 days, it's a real desert. Wave heights are mostly 1ft to 3ft, the winds are a mix of onshore, cross-off, and glassy but the swell is just too weak. The combined energy values are all under 100, many under 50. Even the glassy morning on Wednesday the 4th of September with 1ft is just a pond.
So, bottom line: if you're desperate for a paddle, Tuesday morning the 25th of August is your best bet. It won't be epic, but that 5ft NE swell with offshore NW wind is the cleanest, most energetic window we see. The rest of the run is a long stretch of small, weak, and mostly blown-out surf. It's a lean few weeks, but that's how it goes sometimes—forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
