The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Little Austi and Main Beach.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and ordinary for this stretch. There’s a real lack of any proper swell energy, and the wind windows are narrow. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The best chance to get wet will be tomorrow, Thursday the 20th of August, in the afternoon. It’s not going to be a classic, but there’ll be a small, weak 3ft swell from the NE with a short period of 6 seconds, and the wave energy is weak (84). The wind is a light NNE cross-off, so it’ll be clean enough for a small wave grovel. It’s a beach and reef setup, and it can get a crowd sometimes, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Friday the 21st looks a little better in the morning. The swell drops to 3ft from the NE, but the wind goes glassy offshore from the NW at 3 mph. It’ll be clean, but it’s still small and weak – the energy is real low (68). It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for every turn.
After that, it’s a write-off for a solid week. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny, the winds are messy, or it’s just onshore. There’s a brief uptick at the end of August, but the swell that comes on the 29th and 30th – up to 6ft and 7ft from the NE – comes with strong cross-onshore winds, making it a choppy, blown-out mess. The wave energy ramps up to moderate (271) and then strong (874) on the 30th, but with that wind, it’s more of a kitesurfing kind of day than a paddle session.
The first few days of September are a repeat of the same pattern: small, weak NE swells, and the winds are marginal. The best looking morning in that stretch is Tuesday the 1st of September, with a tiny 3ft ENE swell and glassy conditions, but it’s barely a ripple.
There’s no standout in this whole window. The best you’ll get is a small, clean, ordinary wave on Friday morning the 21st of August. It’s a long, flat run, and for this area, that’s not unusual.
Rusty.
