The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for this stretch.
Honestly, the next week and a half is going to be pretty flat and uneventful. We’ve got a long, drawn-out run of small, weak swells and mostly messy conditions. There’s a little bump of energy around Tuesday the 25th, but it’s nothing to get excited about, and after that, it’s a real slog until the very end of the forecast window.
Let’s start with the only period that even hints at something rideable. On Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, we get a little spike in energy with a combined swell energy of (225). The swell comes in at 4ft from the NE, but the period is short at just 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and weak. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW at 31 km/h, keeping things clean enough, but the waves are going to be ordinary. It’s not a standout, just the best of a poor lot. The afternoon that same day sees the swell shift to 4ft from the ENE with a period of 7 seconds, but the wind turns and the conditions are very ordinary with light rain.
After that, it’s a real desert. From Wednesday the 26th right through to the end of the first week of September, we are looking at tiny surf. The swell drops to 3ft and below, with periods mostly in the 5-10 second range, and the combined energy values are weak, often below 100. Winds are mostly cross or cross-on, and the quality is rated as poor. There are a few morning sessions with glassy conditions, like Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of August, but with only 3ft of weak, short-period swell, it’s barely a ripple.
There’s a significant gap of about ten days where there’s really nothing worth paddling out for. The only flicker of life comes right at the very end. On Monday morning, the 7th of September, we see a tiny pulse of 3ft from the NE with a 6-second period. The combined swell energy is only 60, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NNE at 8 km/h. It’s surfable but again, very ordinary. This is the most promising option in the entire two-week run, but it’s still small and weak.
For the spot itself, Little Austi and Main Beach, it’s a beach and reef setup that’s exposed to the ENE. The water temp is about average for this time of year. The crowds can be around sometimes, but with surf this small, it won’t be an issue.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the Tuesday morning (25th August) or the Monday morning (7th September) are your only real bets. Otherwise, this is a classic run of small, quiet conditions. It tends not to stay this poor for long around here, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
