The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's get into it.
It’s a quiet stretch ahead for Little Austi and Main Beach. We’ve got a mix of small swells and tricky wind windows to work with, but honestly, the first week is pretty thin. There’s a bit of a gap with nothing exciting on offer for a few days right off the bat.
Sunday the 23rd is a write-off. We’re looking at a tiny 1ft NE windswell with a short 6-second period and a combined swell energy of just 9. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. The wind is light and cross-off, but the waves just aren’t there to do anything with. The afternoon sees a slight bump to 4ft from the SSE with an 8-second period and moderate energy (144), but it’s still poor conditions.
Monday the 24th is more of the same. Morning brings a 3ft NE swell at 5 seconds (63 energy), and the afternoon stays small at 4ft NE at 5 seconds (77 energy). The wind is cross-off but it’s just not enough push to get excited about.
Tuesday the 25th morning is where we finally get a little spark. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NE with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 222, which is a moderate, punchy little wave. What’s really good here is the offshore wind from the NNW – that’s going to clean things up nicely. This is the standout session of the whole outlook. The waves won’t be huge, but they’ll be fun, clean, and head-high for a solid intermediate session. The afternoon gets messy with light rain and a cross-off wind that spoils it.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are not worth paddling out for. Onshore winds and small, weak swells. Thursday morning does go glassy with a 2ft NE swell, but the energy is a weak 60 and the period is short.
Friday the 28th morning is glassy again with a 2ft ENE swell at 8 seconds (59 energy). It’s clean, but it’s tiny. Good for a longboard or a foiler, but not much else. The afternoon sees a pulse of SSE swell at 3ft and 10 seconds with 168 energy, but the cross-shore wind makes it messy.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are dominated by weak SSE and ENE swells with onshore and cross-onshore winds. The energy is moderate at best, but the quality just isn’t there.
Looking into the second week, it stays quiet. Monday the 31st is glassy in the morning with a tiny 2ft ENE swell (47 energy). Tuesday the 1st of September has a morning offshore wind from the NW with a 2ft E swell at 10 seconds (66 energy), but again, it’s tiny. The afternoon of Tuesday is the next best option – glassy conditions with a 4ft NE swell at 5 seconds (68 energy). The period is super short so it will be a bit soft and lumpy, but at least it’s glassy.
Thursday the 3rd of September morning sees a clean 3ft S swell at 6 seconds with 100 energy and a gentle offshore from the NW. It’s surfable but nothing to write home about.
Overall, if you’re desperate for a wave, the clear winner is Tuesday morning, August 25th at Little Austi and Main Beach. The 4ft NE swell with offshore wind and moderate energy (222) is the best we’ve got. It won’t be epic, but it’ll be the cleanest and most fun of the entire 16-day run. The rest is mostly small, weak, or wind-affected.
Rusty.
