Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipeline for Little Austi and Main Beach. To be straight with you, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much happening, with the first real surf not showing up until Sunday the 19th of July. Up until then, it’s just tiny, weak dribble or flat, messy conditions.
The real action gets going on Sunday the 19th. The morning is the standout. A solid 7ft easterly swell rolls in with a period of 11 seconds, packing a punch of 1010 energy. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the NW, which means the sets will be clean and lined up. The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year. This is the best session on offer, but wave heights over 5ft and up to 7ft mean it’s not one for the beginners – it’s for the experienced crew who know what they’re doing. The afternoon stays big at 7ft, but the wind swings cross-off, so it’s not as clean.
Monday the 20th is still a good call. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, but you’ve got clean offshore wind from the WNW in the morning. The energy is a solid 648. The swell is a touch shorter in period, but the lines should still be good.
The next big pulse hits on Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning brings a solid 8ft swell from the ESE with a very long period of 12 seconds (1697 energy). That’s a lot of water moving, and a long-period groundswell like that can be tricky at a beach break – it might be a bit straight and hard to handle. It’s definitely for experts only above 8ft, and the wind is cross-off, not full offshore. The afternoon gets a bit messy with the onshore breeze.
Then on Thursday the 23rd of July, the morning is a gem. The swell is 6ft from the ESE, the energy is a solid 636, and the wind goes glassy – dead calm out of the NW. That’s about as clean as it gets. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s got some shape. A real hidden gem in the period.
The rest of the run into the 27th is small, dropping back below 3ft, with a bit of side-offshore wind but nothing to get excited about.
So, the pick of the fortnight is the Sunday 19th of July morning and the Thursday 23rd of July morning. The Sunday has the power and the offshore wind, and the Thursday has the glassy, clean conditions. If you can only get wet once, make it one of those.
Rusty.
