Alright, Rusty here, let's get into it.
It’s been a quiet spell at Little Austi and Main Beach, and honestly, the first week’s looking pretty flat for us. There’s a big gap from now all the way through until Monday the 6th of July before there's anything worth paddling out for. Before that, it's just small, weak lines with messy winds and poor conditions. A tough run.
Alright, so Monday the 6th of July we get a wake-up call. The swell jumps up to 8ft from the SSE, with a moderate cross-onshore wind. The wave energy is way up there at 1134, but it’s choppy and messy – definitely not a beginners' day. That size is pushing into expert territory. Tuesday the 7th is similar, just a touch smaller around 7-8ft from the SE, but still cross-onshore.
Now, Wednesday the 8th of July is where you want to be in the water. We’ve got a 7ft SE swell, and the wind goes glassy in the morning. That’s the standout for this whole outlook period. It’ll be clean, the wave energy is still strong at 950, and the period is a solid 10 seconds. This is the morning to set the alarm early. For the more experienced crew, the afternoon drops a bit to 6ft but it goes onshore, so the morning window is the gem.
After that, things drop off quickly again. Thursday the 9th through to the 11th of July have smaller, weaker swells in the 3-5ft range, mostly with cross or cross-onshore winds, so nothing special. Saturday the 11th of July morning goes glassy with a tiny 3ft SE swell, and it’s surfable but very ordinary – a last resort for a longboard really.
Then we have another dry spell from the 12th of July right through until Saturday the 18th of July. That last day though, Saturday the 18th of July afternoon, is a wildcard. The forecast shows a 13ft SSE groundswell rolling in with an 11-second period, clean wind and massive wave energy of 3879. That’s for experts only, no question. It’s a long-range call so don't hold your breath, but if it comes together, it’ll be a powerful, heavy day.
Water temp on Friday the 3rd of July was 66°, a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.
So, to sum it up: the one true standout is Wednesday the 8th of July morning. Glassy conditions, solid 7ft SE swell. If that’s not enough, maybe the long-shot on the 18th of July afternoon could be a belter, but that’s a big maybe.
Rusty.
