Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Little Austi and Main Beach.
Right now, there’s a bit of a flat spell to start. The first decent window kicks off Saturday the 11th of July with a clean, glassy morning. Swell is around 3ft out of the ESE, with a nice long 12-second period — proper groundswell. Winds are light offshore from the NW, so conditions should be tidy. Combined energy is moderate at 407, so there’s some push behind it. This is the pick of the early days, but don’t get too excited; it’s not a big wave day, just clean and fun on the small side.
Saturday afternoon holds similar size but the wind shifts to a light cross-off from the NNE, still okay but not as glassy. Sunday the 12th sees a drop in size — 2ft in the morning, wind howling from the WNW at 25 km/h, making it bumpy. Sunday afternoon is much the same, and by Monday the 13th the swell is tiny, barely a ripple. From Tuesday the 14th through to Friday the 17th, it’s mostly flat or close to it, with onshore winds and weak energy. On Friday the 17th there’s a brief pulse of 4ft from the south but at only 5 seconds — that’s short-period windswell and the combined energy is only 83 to 95, so it’s messy. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, Saturday the 18th of July shows some hope. Morning brings 3ft from the east at 9 seconds, and the wind goes glassy — dead calm. Combined energy is 164, moderate. Conditions are clean, but it’s not a standout wave day. Sunday the 19th has a similar 3ft east swell with offshore NNW winds in the morning, so clean again, but still small.
Here’s where things get interesting: Monday the 20th of July. Morning sees 4ft from the east at 10 seconds, winds from the NNW at 15 km/h — cross-off and clean. Combined energy jumps to 323, solid moderate. By the afternoon, swell builds to 5ft from the ENE, still 10 seconds, and winds go offshore from the NNW at 20 km/h, keeping things clean. Combined energy is 399, the best of the run. This is a strong standout window for Little Austi and Main Beach (a beach and reef setup). The swell direction (ENE) lines up well with the optimum swell direction (ENE), meaning the break should handle it nicely. At 5ft, it’s fine for intermediates but might be a bit much for beginners. With offshore wind and moderate energy, waves should have some shape and punch. Crowds are possible — the spot is exposed and can get busy on the better days. Get in early.
Tuesday the 21st drops off a little — 3ft to 4ft from the east at 10 seconds, but winds go cross-shore and then onshore, so quality drops. The rest of the week from Wednesday the 22nd through to Sunday the 26th slides back into small, weak surf. Swell stays under 3ft, periods short, and winds are mostly cross or onshore. Nothing worth getting worked up about. Keep an eye on Monday the 20th — that’s your best bet.
Rusty.
