The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Little Austi and Main Beach.
Right off the bat, it's pretty quiet. We've got a run of poor conditions and zero surf energy from Tuesday through to the end of the week. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-off or cross-on, but nothing is doing. The first few days are a write-off, so don't bother paddling out until at least Saturday the 20th.
The real action doesn't crank up until Sunday the 19th. That afternoon, we see a pulse of energy coming in, with a swell height of 6 ft from the ENE at 11 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 839 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is still cross-on from the South, so it's messy. It's a marginal call.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Monday the 20th is the standout. The morning is glassy, absolute perfection, with a 6 ft ENE groundswell at 10 seconds. The energy is up there at 629 (moderate wave energy). This is the best on offer – clean, lined-up waves. That glassy wind is a massive plus. It's a beach and reef setup, so keep an eye on the tide, but for the size, it's a good call for intermediates. The water temp is about 65°, which is bang on average for the time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit.
Tuesday the 21st morning is also a beauty with glassy conditions and 5 ft swell. The energy drops a touch to 440, but still clean. The afternoon picks up a cross-shore breeze, making it less appealing.
After that, the weather tries to mess things up again. Wednesday the 22nd gets a cross-on wind, but then we see another promising window. Thursday the 23rd has a solid 7 ft swell from the East with a 12-second period. The energy is a strong 1066 (strong wave energy). That's a powerful groundswell, but with a 12-second period, it'll be a bit more lined up. Be careful though – at 7 ft, it's getting into the expert territory, especially if the banks are tricky. The wind is a light cross-shore in the morning, so it's workable.
The real gem in the second week is Friday the 24th of July. Morning offshore winds from the NW, glassy, and a 6 ft East swell with a 12-second period. The energy is 918 (strong wave energy). This is a proper session. The crowd factor is "sometimes" at Little Austi, so expect a few heads out, but it's worth it.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th also offer clean morning windows with offshore flow and 5-5 ft East swell. The energy stays in the 600-800 range, so it's consistent. The rest of the period drops off into smaller, less clean surf.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a guaranteed flat spell. Don't bother. The standout is Monday the 20th for the glassy perfection, and Friday the 24th of July for the clean, powerful groundswell. Get out there.
Rusty.
