Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Austi and Main Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next 16 days for Little Austi and Main Beach. It’s a mixed bag, but we’ve got a real standout window coming up if you’re patient.
The first week is pretty grim. We’ve got a tiny pulse of swell on Saturday, July 11th, with clean 3-foot waves from the ESE, a 12-second period, and a light NW breeze. The water is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (407). It’s surfable, but nothing to get too excited about. Sunday and Monday are a write-off – the swell drops to nothing and the wind is messy. Then from Tuesday through to the following Friday, it’s flat or blown out, with a few days of zero surf and moderate cross-onshore winds. That’s a long gap of about 5 days with no real recommendable surf.
But hold on. The real story starts on Sunday, July 19th. That morning, we get a 8-foot E swell with a 10-second period, and it’s glassy – NW wind, barely a breath. The combined energy jumps to a massive 2209, which is strong. This is excellent for experienced surfers only, as it’s over 8 feet by the afternoon. The break is a beach and reef setup, so that long period (10 seconds) should give some decent shape. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect company.
The standout, though, is Monday, July 20th. The morning is glassy again, with an 8-foot E swell, a 12-second period, and wind from the WNW at only 3 mph. The combined energy is 2201. This is the best on offer – clean, powerful, and steep. It’s a big wave, so it’s for the experienced crew. The crowd situation might be busy, but for waves this good, it’s worth it.
After that, the swell drops off through the week, but the quality holds. By Thursday, July 23rd, it’s a smaller 5-foot ESE swell with a 13-second period, but the wind is light and variable. It’s a marginal day, but cleaner than the rest.
Then we get another nice little window on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th. The swell is 6 feet from the ESE, period 11 seconds, with a gentle offshore breeze from the NW. The combined energy is strong (853). This is a much more manageable size for intermediate surfers, and it’s clean. The Sunday (July 26th) drops to 5 feet, but still with a clean offshore wind. That’s a solid finish to the run.
So, the best on offer? No question: the Sunday morning (July 19th) and especially the Monday morning (July 20th) with that big, glassy, 8-foot E swell. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. For the more average punter, the weekend of July 25th-26th is your best bet – smaller, cleaner, and still fun.
Rusty out.
