The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a yarn about what’s coming up at Little Austi and Main Beach.
First off, don’t get too excited for the next few days. We’re looking at a proper flat spell through Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th – just tiny dribbles of 0.3ft from the east with a short period, and cross-onshore winds making a mess of it. Friday the 17th through to Sunday the 18th stays pretty poor, with weak, short-period swell around 2.6ft to 3.3ft and choppy conditions. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting at under 100 (80) on Friday morning, so there’s not much to work with.
Now, things start to get interesting on Sunday the 19th. A pulse of 6.9ft swell from the east-northeast rolls in with a period of 11 seconds, giving us a solid 961 combined energy – that’s moderate wave energy. But it’s still looking a bit iffy for Sunday with cross-onshore wind and questionable tide conditions. The real standout window opens up on Monday the 20th. The early morning is where it’s at: the swell drops to 5.9ft from the east-northeast, still a 10-second period, but the wind goes glassy – zero wind, dead calm. That’s as clean as it gets. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no freak warm or cold pockets to worry about.
Tuesday the 21st morning is also a gem. Swell holds at 4.9ft from the same east-northeast direction, and we get light offshore winds from the north-northwest. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The combined energy is strong at 471 (moderate). This is the best of the lot for intermediate surfers – not too big, not too small. Just be aware that crowds are possible here, as it’s a beach and reef setup that can get a few bodies.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd mornings keep the good run going with 4.3ft to 3.9ft swell, glassy to clean conditions, and decent energy (331 to 299). The swell direction is east-northeast, which is bang on the optimum for this spot. After that, it starts to fade. Friday the 24th through the end of the month sees a steady drop in size and energy, with mostly poor conditions and cross-onshore wind. There’s a little blip on Saturday the 25th morning with 2.6ft and offshore wind, but it’s tiny. And then on Thursday the 30th, a late pulse of 3.9ft from the south-southeast with a glassy morning – could be a sneaky clean session if you’re patient.
For the standout, no question: Monday the 20th morning is the pick. Glassy conditions, head-high plus swell, and the best wave energy of the whole run. Tuesday the 21st morning is a close second with that offshore wind. Don’t sleep on it.
