The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s coming up for Little Austi and Main Beach.
Honestly, the next few days are pretty flat. There’s nothing surfable until the 16th, and even then it’s barely a ripple. You’ll be waiting through a bit of a dry spell – the first four days are a complete write-off with no swell to speak of and cross-onshore winds making it messy. The 16th sees a tiny 0.3ft east swell pop up, but it’s still no good.
The first real chance of anything comes on the morning of Friday the 17th, with a 4ft south swell, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s going to be choppy and poor. The combined swell energy is low (109). That pattern sticks around through the weekend – same messy wind, small swell, and poor conditions.
Now, things start to get interesting around the 19th. The swell picks up to 5ft from the east (10-second period), and the combined energy jumps to 499 – a solid moderate wave energy. The wind is still cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s a step up. The morning of the 20th sees 6ft from the ENE (10 seconds) with 584 energy, and the wind goes light cross-onshore. It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the best we’ve seen so far.
The standout window is from the 21st through to the 25th. On the morning of the 21st, we get 5ft from the ENE (10 seconds) with offshore winds from the WNW – that’s clean. The combined energy is 355 (moderate). The morning of the 23rd is even better: 5ft from the east (10 seconds) with offshore winds from the NW, and the energy is 450. That’s clean, fun-sized surf. The 24th morning is a beauty too – 4ft from the east with offshore winds from the NW, and by the afternoon it goes glassy, zero wind. That’s the pick of the whole period for a clean, long session. The 25th holds similar with 4ft from the east and offshore winds in the morning.
After the 26th, it starts to fade. The 27th through the 29th see the swell drop back to 3ft to 4ft, but the wind turns strong and cross-onshore or cross-shore, and the combined energy dips. The 27th morning has a strong breeze at 25 mph from the SSW, making it a mess – that’s kite surfing weather, not paddle surfing.
Overall, the best on offer is the morning of the 24th – glassy, 4ft east swell, offshore wind, clean. The 23rd morning is a close second. Little Austi and Main Beach is a fairly consistent spot, and this run shows it. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. Crowds are sometimes around, so you might have company, but with that quality, it’ll be worth it.
