The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Austinmer Beach is a bit of a mixed bag, and there’s a decent patch of nothing to start with. The first few days are pretty average, but we’ve got a couple of standout windows that are worth keeping an eye on.
The first recommendation isn’t until Wednesday morning, July 15th, but it’s a bit of a beast. We’ve got a solid 10-foot south swell, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s a lot of water moving around, with strong wave energy (2801). The wind is a cross-shore from the SSW at 12 mph, but honestly, this is way too big for a beginner spot like Austinmer Beach. It’s more for the crew who know what they’re doing. The water temp is about average for the time of year. After that, it drops off quickly. The afternoon sees a drop to 6 feet, but the wind turns cross-on and it gets choppy, with poor conditions. The rest of the week is a write-off, with small, messy, and onshore winds. There’s a big gap of no real surf from Friday the 17th through to Saturday the 19th.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The best window of the entire outlook is Monday morning, July 20th. We’ve got a 5-foot swell from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds and moderate wave energy (650). But the big news is the wind: glassy, absolutely calm. Light offshore on the Monday morning too. That’ll be clean, lined-up waves. It’s a standout for sure. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds are sometimes a thing here, so get there early. The morning of Tuesday the 21st is also decent, with a 4-foot ENE swell, glassy, and light offshore winds. That’s another good slot.
The following week is a bit of a mixed bag again. Wednesday morning the 22nd has a clean, glassy 4-foot ENE swell, but it’s nothing special. By the end of the week, the wind swings back onshore, and we get a 6-foot south swell on Friday the 24th, but it’s cross-on and messy.
The real last call is on Thursday morning, July 30th. We’ve got a 4-foot south-southeast swell, with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is glassy again. It’s a clean, small day, and the wave energy is moderate (321). Not a big standout, but a nice way to end the window if you’re keen for a paddle.
So, the pick of the bunch is Monday morning, July 20th, and Tuesday morning, July 21st. The rest is average to poor. For the beginners, those 3-foot to 4-foot days are your best bet, but the 5-foot+ days are a bit much.
Rusty.
