The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at Austinmer Beach for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it's a slow start. We've got a big gap of pretty ordinary conditions before anything really worth paddling out for shows up.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th has a solid 9.8ft southerly swell, but with that much energy and a cross-shore wind, it's just too big and messy for this spot. Thursday and Friday are all poor, with weak, choppy slop. The energy drops right off, and it just stays flat and ugly through the weekend. Saturday the 19th sees a bit of a pulse, but it's only marginal.
The first real highlight is Monday the 20th. The morning is looking clean with a light NNW cross-offshore breeze and a 4.9ft east-northeast swell. The energy is moderate and the period is a solid 10 seconds, so there'll be some shape. It's a beginner spot, so that size is perfect. Just be aware, it can get crowded here sometimes.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd mornings are also clean with cross-offshore winds, but the swell is a bit smaller at 4.3ft and 3.6ft. Still, it's surfable and clean. Then we hit another quiet patch through the end of the week.
Now, the real standout for the whole outlook is Monday the 27th of July. The morning is absolutely glassy with no wind, and we've got a 5.2ft southerly groundswell with a very long period of 12 seconds. The energy is strong. This is proper groundswell, so it'll have real push and long, clean lines. The light offshore from the west-northwest will keep it perfect. For a beginner spot, this is about as good as it gets—just be aware that with a long period swell, beach breaks can get a bit straight, but the quality should be there. The water temperature is 64.2°, which is pretty average for this time of year, nothing to worry about.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. Monday the 20th morning is your first decent option, but the real gem is Monday the 27th morning. That's the one to circle on the calendar.
