The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s on the table for Austinmer Beach over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be honest – the first few days are a bit of a dull start. If you’re lookin’ to get wet, you’ll have to be patient.
The first real chance comes on Sunday morning, August 23rd. We’ve got a south swell at 4ft with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is moderate (220), and with a light breeze from the NNW, it’ll be clean. It’s not a monster, but for a beginner-friendly spot, it’s a fun little session.
The week after that is a bit of a mixed bag – mostly small, onshore, or just average. There’s a moment on Wednesday morning, August 26th, with 4ft from the ENE and light offshore winds, but the quality is still just “surfable.” The water is about 64°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Now, the real standout is Monday, August 31st. This is the one to mark on your calendar. We’ve got a long-period groundswell from the SSE at 17 seconds – that’s proper energy. The swell is only 2ft, but the combined energy is strong (346). With a light northerly breeze, it’s glassy and clean. The waves will be long and lined up, perfect for the point. Just remember, with that long period, it can break a bit straight on the beach, so work the corners. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so get out early.
Tuesday morning, September 1st, is also a solid follow-up: 3ft of south swell (11 seconds), clean with a light offshore, and moderate energy (217). It’s a good backup.
The last week of the outlook is pretty quiet. The energy drops off, and we’re back to tiny, short-period slop. There’s a brief moment on Saturday morning, September 5th, with a solid 25 km/h offshore wind from the west, but the swell is only 3ft – it’ll be clean but small.
So, to wrap it up: the best bet is Monday, August 31st for that long-period groundswell and glassy conditions. The Sunday, August 23rd is a decent starter, and Tuesday, September 1st is worth a look if you miss the main event. The rest of the run is mostly small and ordinary, so don’t hold your breath for the second week.
Rusty.
