The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Austinmer Beach.
Look, I'm gonna be straight with you – the next week or so is pretty ordinary. We've got a run of small, weak waves with poor conditions, so don't expect much. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary there.
The first real chance of anything decent won't come until Thursday morning, the 20th of August. We've got a 3 ft swell from the NE with a short 6-second period, weak energy (129). It's surfable, but it's ordinary – a light NNW cross-off breeze keeps it clean, but that's about it. Not something to get excited over.
There's a gap of quiet days after that, with small, messy surf. Then, on Sunday morning, the 23rd of August, we get a tiny window of hope. The morning is glassy, with a 2 ft S swell, 9-second period, and moderate energy (87). That's glassy conditions, which is a major positive for clean surf, but the swell is tiny. It's worth a paddle if you're desperate, but keep expectations low.
The real standout – and I mean the *only* standout in this whole 16-day window – is shaping up for Thursday the 3rd of September morning. We've got a 5 ft E swell, 9-second period, with moderate energy (400). The wind is light SW, cross-off, and the conditions are clean. This is the best you'll see for a while. It's a solid, rideable wave with good shape. The wind is offshore, so it'll be clean and lined up. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Friday morning, the 4th of September, also looks promising with a 5 ft SSE swell, 8-second period, and glassy conditions – another good option.
Now, a heads-up for the end of August into early September. From Sunday the 30th of August through to Tuesday the 1st of September, we get a massive pulse of swell. The 30th afternoon sees a 8 ft NE swell, and it just gets bigger – 10 ft on the 31st, 12 ft on the 1st of September. The energy readings are huge (1059, 2186, 2207, 2821). This is expert territory only. These waves will be powerful and heavy, too big for beginners and even strong intermediates. The wind is offshore, so they'll be clean, but it's a serious paddle. If you're not confident in big surf, stay on the beach.
For the second week, the brighter spots are Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September. Both mornings have clean, rideable waves in the 4 ft to 5 ft range, with glassy or offshore winds. That's where the best chance for a fun session lies.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The best surf is on Thursday the 3rd of September morning, with a clean 5 ft E swell. Friday morning the 4th is also good. The big swell at the end of August is for experts only. Keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
