The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the stretch ahead for our local patch.
First up, it's not looking like a classic run. We've got a bit of a wait on our hands. The next week or so is full of small, ordinary waves with average conditions. Nothing to get excited about, but don't write it off completely – there are a couple of windows that could be worth a paddle.
Friday the 21st kicks off with tiny 3 ft surf from the ENE at a short 6 seconds. The energy is weak (52). With a light offshore from the NW, it'll be clean but very small. Not a day to travel for, but if you're local and need a wet-suit tan, it's surfable. The afternoon glass-off is even smaller at 2 ft.
Saturday the 22nd is a write-off. Swell drops to nothing (0.7 ft) and that's that.
We get a little pulse on Sunday the 23rd with a 3 ft S swell, but the period is short (8 secs). The morning glass is nice, but the energy is only moderate (136). Don't expect much.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same – small waves, onshore or cross-off winds, keeping things messy or weak. The standout in this first week is really just a matter of picking the least bad option.
Thursday the 27th sees a jump in size to 5 ft from the S with a longer period of 11 seconds. The energy is strong (628). The morning has a light cross-shore wind, but it's still a bit of a mess. It's not *bad*, but it's not firing.
Now, for the best of the whole outlook, you have to look ahead. Friday the 28th of August morning is the pick. We get that S swell dropping to 3 ft, but with a solid 9-second period, and the wind is offshore from the WNW (20 km/h). The energy is moderate (252) and it will be clean. This is the best window in the whole run – a proper offshore, clean, and surfable. The swell is 3 ft from the south, so it's not huge, but it's the only time the planets really line up.
Another promising window pops up on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning is an absolute glass-off with 4 ft of E swell, 10-second period, and solid energy (345). That's a crystal-clean morning with good potential. This is a close second to the 28th.
By the 3rd of September (Thursday), we get a cheeky 4 ft S swell with offshore NNW wind, but the period is a short 7 seconds. It'll be clean, but quick and weak.
Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th fizzle out again with tiny, weak E swells, but at least the mornings are glassy.
So here's the call: The first week is a struggle. The real standout is Friday the 28th of August morning for that clean, offshore S swell. A close second is the glassy Tuesday the 1st of September morning. Everything else is a "maybe" at best.
Water temp is about average for this time of year at Austinmer Beach.
Rusty out.
