The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the scoop on what’s headed our way in the next couple of weeks.
The start of the period is a bit of a tame affair, but we’ve got a solid window of clean waves coming up if you’re patient. The first real chance to get wet kicks off on Saturday, July 19th, but the conditions are a bit sketchy. We’ve got a 6 ft swell from the ENE, but the wind is a cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bit messy. Not the best way to start the weekend.
The standout, and I mean the real highlight, is Monday morning, July 20th. We’ll see a clean 5 ft ENE swell rolling in with a nice 11-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW. This is the kind of morning where you can get some proper, clean lines. The water is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. The energy is moderate (713), and that longer period groundswell should give you some nice, well-shaped waves with longer lulls between sets. It’s a beach break, so the long period might make it a little straight, but with the clean conditions, it’s your best bet. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so keep that in mind.
If you miss Monday, the next good option is Friday morning, July 24th. We’ve got a 6 ft S swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy. That’s right, flat calm. The wave energy is strong (668), and the conditions are described as “very good.” This is the other solid option, but it’s a bit further out.
After a few days of building swell, the end of the month and into August looks like a write-off. The 30th and 31st of July and the 1st of August see the swell size pick up, but the wind is onshore, cross-onshore, or just plain messy, and we’re even looking at rain. The energy is strong (over 500), but with the poor conditions, it’s more of a kite surfers' setup than a paddle session. The period drops into the short, choppy range, too.
There is a small glimmer on the very end of the forecast, Sunday afternoon, August 2nd. The swell drops right back to 4 ft, but the wind goes glassy. It’s a long way out, so don’t hold your breath, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
So, to break it down: Monday the 20th is your best bet for clean, quality surf. Friday the 24th is the other standout. The rest of the time is a mix of average to poor conditions, with a long stretch of messy surf from the end of July into the first week of August.
Rusty.
