The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk in feet and miles per hour for those who think that way. The first few days are a total write-off – small, choppy, and cross-shore. No point even looking until Sunday, July 19th.
That Sunday morning is the real gem. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and we’ve got a 5-foot east-northeast swell rolling in with an 11-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy (combined energy of 618), plenty of push for a beginner-friendly beach like this. Water temp is 64°, right about average for the time of year, so you’ll be fine in a spring suit.
Monday the 20th morning is another good one – a clean cross-off breeze from the northwest, with 5ft ENE swell, still holding that 10-second period. Tuesday the 21st morning is glassy again, but the swell drops to 4ft. Still a fun, clean wave. Wednesday the 22nd morning is glassy too, but only 3ft. If you’ve got to pick one, make it Sunday.
The middle of the second week gets tiny – down to 2ft for a few days. But on Saturday, July 25th morning, there’s a weird one. A tiny 2ft south-southeast swell, but with a massive 18-second period. Super long period groundswell, but it’s just too small to do much with.
Now, the big news is Wednesday, July 29th. The models are showing a 7 to 8ft southerly swell, with moderate energy (combined energy around 766-845). But for Austinmer, that’s big. With a 9-second period, it’s not the cleanest, and it’s really only for the experts. The winds look clean, but it’s a long way off, so take it with a grain of salt.
Rusty.
