G'day, I'm Rusty.
Alright, let’s have a good look at what’s on the cards for Austinmer Beach over the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sitting at 65.7°F, which is about 1.8°F warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a nice little bump.
Straight up, the first thing you need to know is that this run starts off with a serious dose of size. We’ve got a solid swell pulse hitting from Sunday the 5th, with waves already at 8.2 ft from the south, period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is pumping hard at 1742 (moderate wave energy). The problem is, that’s too big for this spot. Austinmer is a beginner-friendly beach break, and when the swell pushes past 5 ft, it gets sketchy for learners; over 8.2 ft, it’s strictly for the experienced crew. Winds are cross-shore and strong out of the SSW at 25 km/h, so it’s messy too. Not the day to paddle out unless you know what you’re doing.
That Sunday afternoon and into Monday, the swell stays up around 7.9 ft to 9.8 ft with cross to cross-onshore winds, and the comment is clear: poor surf conditions. The energy is still high (2556 and 1108), but the chop and lump make it a write-off. This pattern continues through Tuesday and Wednesday with waves sitting between 7.2 ft and 9.8 ft, periods around 9-11 seconds, and cross-shore winds. The break is simply overwhelmed. Even though the tide and wind might be favorable for some, the size is just too much for Austinmer.
We start to see a drop on Thursday the 9th, with waves easing to 5.6 ft in the morning and 5.2 ft in the afternoon, but the wind is cross-onshore and there’s a cross-chop. The energy drops to 767 and 594, but conditions are only marginal. Not worth the effort.
Friday the 10th morning finally offers a glimmer. Swell is down to 4.9 ft from the southeast, period of 9 seconds, with light cross-offshore winds out of the SW at 15 km/h. The combined energy is 409 (weak to moderate), and it’s clean. You’ll find some fun little waves, but it’s not a standout. The afternoon turns to poor again with rain and cross-shore wind.
Saturday the 11th morning sees the swell drop to 3.9 ft from the southeast, period 9 seconds, and light offshore winds out of the NW at 10 km/h. It’s clean with weak energy of 234. Honestly, it’s a small-scale session for a longboard or a foiler, but nothing to get excited about.
From Sunday the 12th onwards, the diesel runs dry. Waves crash down to 2.0 ft on Sunday morning with weak energy of 114, and by Monday the 13th we’re looking at 1.0 ft to 1.3 ft, with offshore winds but barely a ripple. The combined energy drops into the double digits – 25 and 19. That’s flat spells territory. Tuesday the 14th is even worse, with 0.7 ft to 2.3 ft and energy as low as 12. The water is clean but there’s no push.
Wednesday the 15th picks up a little – 5.2 ft from the south with periods around 7-8 seconds – but the wind is fresh cross-offshore at 30-35 km/h, and the energy is 469 and 329. Still, the surf quality is poor. Too windy, too short period, and not well-shaped.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Thursday the 16th of July – over a week away – a massive pulse arrives. We’re talking 14.8 ft to 16.4 ft from the SSE, period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is huge: 4333 in the morning, 5745 in the afternoon. That’s strong to very strong energy. Winds are light offshore in the morning then onshore in the arvo. But again, this is way too big for Austinmer. Only experts should even look at it, and even then, it’ll be a beast.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th keep that size going: 14.8 ft to 16.4 ft with very long period swells up to 13 seconds, and strong energy readings like 11637 and 5002. Winds are clean offshore, but the sheer power and size make this a no-go for any regular surfer here. The swell direction is SSE to SE, which is not the optimum for this break (it prefers east
