The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first decent surf doesn’t show up until Monday morning, the 20th of July. The pattern is a bit shaky, with a few good windows mixed in with some real dud days. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about average for the time of year, so no need to dig out the extra thick wetsuit just yet.
Monday morning, July 20th is the real standout. Head to Austinmer Beach. The swell is a solid 5 ft from the ENE, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a nice groundswell, and it’s directing a moderate wave energy here (723). The wind is a light NW cross-off, and the forecast is calling for clean conditions. This is going to be your best chance for a proper session. The shape should be good and the sets will have some punch. Keep in mind, the crowds are listed as “sometimes”, so you might have a few mates out, but nothing crazy.
Tuesday morning, July 21st still has some pulse. The swell drops a touch to 4 ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period and clean NNW cross-off winds. The combined energy is lower (406), but it’s still surfable and fun. Wednesday morning, the 22nd, sees the swell easing off to 3 ft from the ENE, but the wind goes glassy off the WSW by afternoon. That’s a rare treat, but the waves are small (3 ft).
We hit a flat patch from late Thursday the 23rd through to the end of the week. The afternoon of the 24th sees a new S swell arrive at 5 ft, but the wind is howling offshore at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean but a bit tricky. Saturday the 25th is a write-off with messy wind.
Sunday the 26th of July is a big one, but it’s a warning, not a recommendation. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the S with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is massive (2785). This is too big for Austinmer Beach. It’s an expert-only zone on this day, and even then, it’s likely to be a washing machine. Beware.
The first week of August looks more promising. Sunday morning, August 2nd is a beauty. The swell is 4 ft from the SSE, with a 10-second period. The wind is glassy, and the combined energy has a solid 366. The afternoon gets even better, with the swell nudging up to 5 ft and the wind going dead flat calm. That’s as clean as it gets. This is another standout session for the second week.
The run-up to that is a bit of a mixed bag. The 30th and 31st of July are blown out by strong winds, and the 1st of August is choppy. For the long-range stuff, keep an eye on that Sunday the 2nd – it’s a bit of a wait, but it’s worth it.
Rusty.
