The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Austinmer Beach. It’s a tale of two halves, really. The start is pretty quiet, with some small, clean but weak waves. Then we get a proper window of good conditions mid-period, followed by a stretch of big, blown-out swell that’s way too much for this place. After that, it settles into a smaller, cleaner groove for the second week.
Water temp is 64°, right around average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off Wednesday the 19th with nothing – just 2ft of sloppy southeast windswell. Not worth it. Thursday the 20th shows a bit more promise with a clean 3ft northeast swell in the morning, but it’s weak and short-period. Friday the 21st is similar, 3ft with a light offshore keeping it tidy, but still small. Saturday the 22nd bottoms out with glassy conditions but only 2ft of swell. Sunday the 23rd has a touch more, 2ft from the south, but the afternoon breeze chops it up. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th slowly build to around 3-4ft, with the better conditions coming Tuesday afternoon as the wind goes offshore.
Now, here’s the first real standout: Thursday the 27th of August. We’ve got a 5ft south swell with an 8-second period and light offshore winds all day. The water will be clean and there’s some proper push behind it. Combined wave energy is moderate at 344 in the morning. This is your session for the first week.
Friday the 28th is a step down to 4ft, still clean in the morning but easing. Then the gap hits. Saturday the 29th jumps up to 8-8ft of south swell – way too big for Austinmer. Combined energy goes over 1000, which is a strong pulse, but it’s unsurfable here. Sunday the 30th is a complete washout: 10ft of south swell with a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore wind. The energy explodes to over 4000, but it’s just a massive, lumpy mess. Monday the 31st stays too big at 7-8ft with onshore winds. So from the 29th to the 31st, there’s no good surf on offer.
After that big pulse, it settles. Tuesday the 1st of September is back down to a clean 4ft south swell with light offshore winds – another good window, though not as powerful as the 27th. Wednesday the 2nd drops to 3ft and gets choppy in the afternoon. Thursday the 3rd is back to tiny 2ft leftovers.
Bottom line: the best bets are Thursday the 27th for the biggest and cleanest, and Tuesday the 1st of September as a smaller, cleaner encore. Steer clear of the huge weekend swell – it’s a no-go here.
Rusty out.
