The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Austinmer Beach has in store for the next couple of weeks in feet.
Right now, it’s flat and nasty. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are total duds—maybe knee-high at best, all cross-shore chop. The wave energy’s barely a whisper (125). Not worth getting wet.
Come Monday the 20th, we get a bit of a pulse. Clean 1.5m ENE swell in the morning, with a light offshore breeze from the NW. Water temp’s 18°C, right on the mark for this time of year. Nothing special but you could get a few. The afternoon gets a bit bumpy.
Tuesday the 21st is similar, a touch smaller at 1.2m, still clean. Wednesday the 22nd fades to 0.9m—clean but weak.
Thursday the 23rd is a whole different beast. A south swell builds to 2.1m in the morning, then 2.5m in the afternoon, with wave energy screaming up to 1206. That’s way too big for this beginner-friendly beach, especially with a strong cross-shore wind. Only the brave (and the kites) will be out.
Friday the 24th is the pick. Morning glass with pure offshore wind, 1.8m of clean south swell, energy at 601. This is the session to aim for. The afternoon goes dead calm, glassy, with 1.4m—longboard heaven. Saturday the 25th keeps the glass, 1.0m south swell, beautiful.
After that, it’s patchy. There are clean moments—like Monday the 27th morning—but the wind picks up from the 28th. By the 29th, we’re looking at 2.4m lumpy cross-shore south swell. Big and messy.
Into August, Saturday the 1st is a rain-soaked write-off with 3.0m of messy onshore junk. But Sunday the 2nd offers a real surprise: flat calm, glassy, and 2.4m of east swell. That’s a lot of clean power. Not for beginners, but for anyone who can handle it, expect clean, glassy sets with next to no crowd.
Best bet by far is Friday the 24th to Saturday the 25th. Clean, glassy, and just the right amount of push.
Rusty.
