The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Austinmer Beach. The next couple of weeks have a bit of a slow start, but we’ve got a few solid windows of clean, offshore surf that’ll get you frothing.
The standout period is the run from Thursday August 27th through to the following Tuesday September 1st. That’s where the real quality sits. The water temp is sitting around 64°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so a spring suit and you’ll be right.
Let’s break it down. Sunday morning the 23rd gives us a 4ft south swell, with a light NNW cross-off breeze. The wave energy is moderate (215), and the short 8-second period means it’ll be a bit on the weaker side, but it’s clean and rideable for a beginner-friendly bank. The best of the bunch is later in the week. Thursday morning the 27th, we’ve got a 5ft south swell, cross-off from the NNW, and the energy is ramping up strong (424). That’s a proper fun-sized wave, and with the 9-second period, it’ll have a bit of push. The same pattern holds for Friday morning the 28th, with a 3ft SSE swell, 11-second period, and a clean SW cross-off breeze. The energy is solid (301), and it’ll be a great morning for a paddle.
The absolute best of the lot? Saturday morning the 29th. We’ve got a 5ft south swell, a clean offshore wind from the NW, and the energy is pumping hard (427). This is a classic clean, lined-up morning for Austinmer Beach. The swell direction is a bit unfavourable for this east-facing break, but the conditions are so good it won’t matter. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so it’s worth getting down early for a park.
After that, Sunday morning the 30th sees a bigger 6ft south swell, but the onshore wind from the south will chop it up. The energy is very strong (1039), but it’s going to be messy. Monday the 31st morning looks promising with a 5ft SSE swell, 11-second period, and a clean NNW cross-off, but the guidance says the conditions are marginal. Tuesday morning September 1st is a ripper with a 3ft SSE swell, 12-second period, and a solid offshore from the WNW. The energy is moderate (315), and it’ll be a clean, fun morning.
The second week fades out. From Wednesday September 2nd onward, the swell drops away to tiny 2ft to 3ft, with periods of glassy conditions, but it’s more of a longboard or flat day setup. The energy is weak (under 100). There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations, just ordinary surf. The last little spike is Monday September 7th afternoon with a 5ft NE swell, but the period is a short and weak 5 seconds, so it’s not worth getting excited about.
In short, lock in Thursday August 27th, Friday August 28th, and especially Saturday August 29th. That’s your window.
Rusty.
