The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s shaping up at Austinmer Beach for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, things are pretty flat and messy. The first few days are a write-off, so you’re looking at a bit of a wait. The real action doesn’t start until Monday morning, the 20th of July. That’s when we finally get a bit of life in the water.
The standout session looks to be Monday morning, July 20th. The swell is coming in from the ENE at 5 feet, with a period of 10 seconds, giving us moderate wave energy (640). The wind is a light northwesterly at 3 mph, which is cross-offshore and clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the pick of the whole outlook – glassy, clean lines, and a decent shoulder-high wave. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and with the offshore wind, it’ll be a joy to surf. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, but it’s worth the shuffle.
The swell drops off a bit through Tuesday and Wednesday, but there are a few salvageable sessions. Tuesday morning, the 21st, has a 4-foot ENE swell (388 energy) with a light NNW breeze, keeping it clean. Wednesday morning, the 22nd, is smaller at 3 feet (162 energy), but still clean with a westerly breeze.
We hit a bit of a lull again from the 23rd through the 27th. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 feet, and the quality is poor. There’s a brief spike on the afternoon of the 23rd with a 7-foot south swell (574 energy), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s not worth paddling out for.
Then, looking way ahead, there’s a big swell on the cards for Friday, the 31st of July. We’re talking a massive 13-foot south swell with a period of 12 seconds, and very strong wave energy (8078). The wind is light and offshore, so it’ll be clean. But here’s the thing – that’s way too big for this beach. It’s an exposed spot, and at that size, it’s going to be a washing machine. Only for experts, and even then, it’s a serious call. The same goes for the 1st and 2nd of August, with swells over 8 feet and glassy conditions, but again, too big for most.
So, to sum it up: your best bet is Monday morning, July 20th. Keep an eye on that long-range big stuff, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Rusty.
