The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it for Austinmer Beach, mate. The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag, and honestly, not much is firing.
Right now, Monday morning is a write-off. Light rain, a weak 0.7m south swell, and a cross-onshore wind that’s just killing it. Combined wave energy is 164 (moderate), but the conditions are poor. Don’t bother.
Tuesday morning (18th August) offers a tiny window: a 0.9m ESE swell with glassy conditions. The period is a short 6 seconds, so the waves are weak, but it’s clean enough for a beginner paddle. Water temp is 18°, about average for this time of year. Energy is 126 (moderate). It’s surfable, but just barely.
Wednesday morning is similar: 0.6m from the ESE, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. Energy climbs back to 164 (moderate), but the waves are small and ordinary.
Thursday morning (20th August) drops to a 0.7m ESE swell, period 7 seconds, energy down to 57 (weak). Again, clean but tiny.
Friday actually shows the best of a bad bunch. Morning has a 0.6m easterly swell, clean with a light offshore WSW breeze (3 mph). The afternoon turns proper offshore from the NW at 3 mph, with a 0.5m ENE swell. Energy is weak at 40, but it’s clean and small. This is about as good as it gets, which says a lot.
From Saturday 22nd through Sunday 23rd, the swell disappears – 0.3-0.5m, weak energy (15-58), and messy winds. Total gap in anything worth paddling for.
Monday 24th sees a return of a 0.6m south swell with glassy morning conditions and energy of 112 (moderate). Still very ordinary.
Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th bring more size (1.0-1.3m, period 8-11 seconds, energy 260-494), but the wind is cross-shore or cross-onshore, creating lumpy chop. This stretch looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Now, here’s the real standout. Thursday morning, 27th August – mark it. A 1.2m ENE swell, period 7 seconds, with glassy conditions and a light offshore from the SW at just 3 mph. Combined energy hits 264 (strong). This is the only period where everything lines up for genuinely good surf. It’s clean, small, and beginner-friendly. The crowds can be there sometimes, so get in early for that glassy window.
Friday 28th offers clean but smaller surf (0.7-0.9m NE swell, energy 158-189) – fine for a relaxed session.
Then it falls apart. Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th bring onshore winds and messy conditions. Sunday morning shows a 1.6m south swell with energy of 499 (strong), but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s messy and too big for beginners.
Monday 31st through Tuesday 1st September is flat and poor – small, weak, and messy.
Bottom line: the only true standout is Thursday morning, 27th August – clean, glassy, and with some energy. That’s your best and only real call. The rest is small, ordinary, or blown out.
Rusty.
