The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks down at Austinmer Beach.

Right off the bat, don’t bother paddlin’ out this Saturday or Sunday morning—the weekend’s a write-off with tiny, weak waves barely knee-high. Saturday’s got a measly 1ft NE windswell with a short 6-second period and only 14 units of combined energy. Wind’s cross-off but it’s not enough to save it. Sunday, we finally see a pulse of south swell come through at 4ft (8 seconds, 215 energy), and with a light northerly breeze and clean conditions, it’s surfable, but it’s still pretty average. Crowds sometimes show here, so you might have some company.

The whole first week is a bit of a grind, to be honest. Monday through Thursday you’re lookin’ at knee-to-waist high south and east-northeast swells, mostly under 3ft and a bit, with periods between 6 and 10 seconds. The combined energy sits between 93 and 184, so it’s weak to moderate. Winds are okay in the mornings—light and cross-off or glassy—but afternoons get trashed by onshore or cross-shore breezes. Nothing worth gettin’ excited about.

There’s a glimmer on Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th. Friday morning is glassy with a 3ft east-northeast swell, 9-second period, and 197 energy—clean but small. Saturday morning is glassy again with 3ft east-northeast swell. Still tiny though. Then Sunday the 30th gets a jump to 5ft but it’s a short-period 6-second south-southeast windswell with 273 energy and a messy cross-onshore breeze. That one’s more for the kite crew than us paddle folk.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting—and I mean *seriously* interesting. Tuesday the 1st of September rolls in with a solid pulse. The morning starts glassy with a 6ft south swell, 7-second period, and 326 energy. Then Tuesday afternoon gets even better: 7ft south swell, 8-second period, and a massive 940 combined energy. Wind’s light and cross-off with clean conditions—this is the standout of the whole outlook. For a beach break like Austinmer, that south swell is the right direction, and the size is solid for competent surfers. Beginners might find the 7ft a bit much, but for anyone with a bit of experience, Tuesday arvo is the session to aim for.

The next real highlight is way out there on Friday the 4th of September. Morning delivers a 10ft south-southeast swell, 8-second period, and 1033 energy with glassy conditions. The finder flags that this is too big for the break, so this is expert-only territory. Even the afternoon drops to 8ft with 887 energy and clean cross-off wind—still massive for this spot. If you’re a seasoned charger and can handle the size, it could be epic. But for most of us, it’s a watch-from-the-beach day.

Water temp is about average for this time of year, no big anomaly to mention. Overall, Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon is your best bet—good swell size, clean, and decent energy. Saturday the 4th is the wildcard for experts only. The rest of the run’s mostly small and choppy. Stay patient.

Rusty.
