Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat about what’s on the cards for Austinmer Beach. Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid southerly swell rolling in over the next few days, but this is a beginner-friendly spot and that wave’s gonna be too much – too big for a safe, fun paddle. The water’s sittin’ at about 66°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothin’ crazy.
Sunday morning (5 July) brings a 10ft southerly swell, period around 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell – and a cross breeze from the SSW at 12 mph. The wave energy is pumpin’ at 1888 (moderate-strong), but it’s just too chunky for a beginner beach. By the arvo, the wind swings southerly and picks up to 19 mph, turning cross-on, and it gets lumpy and messy. No good.
Monday (6 July) holds at 8ft from the SSE, with cross-on breezes around 16 mph. Choppy, poor – not worth a look.
Tuesday (7 July) sees the swell back up to 10ft, with a cross wind from the SSW at 12 mph. Wave energy hits 3382 in the mornin’ and 4120 in the arvo (strong to very strong) – still too big for this break. Wind and tide are favourable, but the size is the problem; experts only.
Wednesday mornin’ (8 July) stays at 8ft, cross wind, still too big. The arvo drops to 6ft but the wind goes cross-on from the south at 9 mph, and the period stretches to 12 seconds – a nice groundswell, but it’s messy and marginal.
Thursday (9 July) has 5ft to 6ft swells from the ESE, with light cross and cross-on winds. Wave energy falls to 592-961 (moderate). Still ordinary – not a standout.
Friday mornin’ (10 July) is similar – 6ft, cross wind, light rain. But look here: Friday arvo things clean up. The swell sits at 6ft from the SE, period 10 seconds, and the wind turns cross-off from the SSW at 9 mph. The report says “expect very good surf conditions” – that’s your best window. Wave energy is 557 (moderate), and with a clean surface, this’ll be your top session. Not huge, but rideable and shapely.
Saturday mornin’ (11 July) offers a glassy 4ft SE swell with 8-second periods – wave energy only 343, so it’s weak. Nice clean surface but small.
From Saturday arvo onward, the surf drops away fast. Sunday mornin’ (12 July) has 3ft, clean but weak (wave energy 160), and then from Monday (13 July) through to the end of the outlook, it’s tiny dribble – 1ft to 2ft – with mostly offshore breezes, but wave energy under 120. A lot of flat, clean but empty days. The last couple of days (20 July) show a bit of cross wind and rain, but still no surf to speak of.
So the honest call: Friday arvo (10 July) is the one to circle. Everything else is either too big, too messy, or too flat. Crowds are possible here at times, but a quiet Friday arvo might give you some space. Rest of the month is a no-go for paddle surfing.
Rusty.
