The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Austinmer Beach. Over the next sixteen days, we’re looking at a pretty flat and unexciting stretch. The real action is slim, with only a couple of moments where it’s worth paddling out. Most of the time you’ll be staring at small, gutless waves and ordinary conditions. Hang tight for a couple of decent windows.
Starting off, Monday the 24th of August offers a little something. The morning has clean 2ft swell from the south with a 10-second period and a light north wind that keeps the surface tidy. Combined wave energy is moderate (194), but it’s small and nothing to write home about. The water’s sitting at 64°F, about average for this time of year, so it’s comfortable enough. The afternoon turns into a mess with a NE breeze, so don’t hold out hope. Tuesday the 25th is small, with a 3ft ENE windswell of short 6-second period – weak energy (98) and only the morning looking clean, but again, it’s really ordinary. Wednesday the 26th is a write-off with storms and rain.
Here’s the best of the bunch: Thursday morning, the 27th of August. This is the standout of the entire outlook. We’ve got a clean 5ft south swell running with a modest 8-second period, but the wind goes glassy – a light SSE breeze at 3 mph creates dead-calm conditions. Combined wave energy kicks up to moderate (313). This is your call, mates. If you want clean, fun-sized waves at Austinmer Beach with no wind messing it up, this is the session. Expect small crowds, but they’ll be there sometimes. The water stays about average. Friday morning the 28th follows up with a glassy 3ft south swell (9-second period) and absolutely no wind – calm conditions, energy at 203 (moderate). Another good one, just a touch smaller. Saturday the 29th is marginal with cross-onshore winds and small swell.
After that, from Sunday the 30th of August onward, it drops right off. Sunday morning has a tiny 3ft swell with glassy conditions but very low energy (123). Monday the 31st is pathetic – 1ft and weak. The first week of September is a desert: day after day of 1.0ft to 2ft waves with combined energy barely reaching triple digits, mostly in the 20s to 80s – that’s weak stuff. There’s a brief uptick on Tuesday the 8th of September with a 3ft ENE windswell (7-second period) and clean offshore wind from the west, energy at 119 (moderate), but still small and unexciting. No more standouts after the 28th, really.
In summary: Thursday the 27th morning and Friday the 28th morning are your best bets. Clean, glassy, small but rideable south swells. Everything else is a snooze. If you’re a beginner, the 2ft to 5ft range is perfect for you, especially with that glass. Experts will be bored stiff. It’s a lean run, but forecasts can change – stay hopeful.
Rusty.
