The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Austinmer Beach over the next couple of weeks.
The pattern starts off a bit hit and miss, with some clean windows but nothing too big. The first real call is on Sunday morning, 23 August. The swell is a modest 4ft out of the south, with a short period of 8 seconds – so it’s a bit wind swell, not much power behind it, but combined energy is moderate at 215. The wind is a light cross-off from the north at 3 mph, which will keep it clean. Water temperature is 64°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. Monday morning, 24 August, offers similar vibes: 2ft south swell, 10-second period, light north wind, and clean conditions. Not a standout, but a decent paddle for a beginner-friendly spot.
The standout of the whole outlook lands on Thursday morning, 27 August. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the south at 8 seconds, and the combined energy reaches 284 – moderate but solid. The wind is dead calm, glassy, with 0 mph from the east-northeast. That’s about as good as it gets for clean conditions. The morning will be glassy and smooth, perfect for a long session. Crowds are possible at Austinmer Beach, so get in early.
There’s a bit of a gap after that. Friday morning, 28 August, has a glassy 3ft south swell, but the energy drops. Then from Saturday, 29 August, through to Sunday, 30 August, the wind turns cross-onshore and the surf quality drops off. Monday, 31 August, gets interesting with a very long-period 19-second south-southeast groundswell, but it’s only 2ft. The combined energy is moderate at 300. That long period will make the waves peel nicely but with long waits between sets. It’s a reef-like quality at a beach break, so it might be a bit straight – best for the patient surfer.
The first week of September sees a return to smaller, cleaner swells. Tuesday morning, 1 September, has a 2ft south swell at 13 seconds with offshore northwest wind at 6 mph – clean and fun. Wednesday, 2 September, drops to 2ft from the east, with very weak energy (78). By Thursday morning, 3 September, a 4ft south-southeast wind swell at 6 seconds arrives, with a clean cross-off from the northwest at 9 mph. The afternoon brings offshore west wind and a 4ft swell, which is about the biggest of the second week, but the period is short. It’s surfable but not special.
Overall, the best bet is Thursday morning, 27 August – that glassy 4ft south swell is the pick of the bunch. After that, it’s a slow grind of small, clean waves with a few fun windows, but nothing to set the world on fire. If you’re a beginner, you’ll find plenty of small, clean days. For experts, keep an eye on that 31 August groundswell, but don’t expect much size.
Rusty.
