Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's coming down the line for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week is going to be a real mixed bag, and for the most part, it's going to be a tough slog. The early part of the week has some proper size, but it's just too much for this spot. We're looking at a big gap of a few days where it’s either too big or too small and messy.
The only real window for a decent paddle comes on the second weekend, but it's a long way off, so keep your expectations in check.
The main break we're dealing with is Austinmer Beach. The water temp is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary. We start off with a serious pulse of swell. Tuesday morning (July 7th) we're seeing a massive 10ft SSE groundswell with a 10-second period – that's a huge amount of energy (3694) and it's just way too much juice. By Tuesday afternoon the swell jumps to 12ft from the SE, period 11 seconds, and the energy is even stronger (4750). The wind is a moderate cross-shore, which is going to make it a washing machine. This is purely for the experts, if anyone, and honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
That same theme continues into Wednesday (July 8th). Morning sees a 8ft SE swell, and the afternoon drops to 7ft, both with a cross-shore wind. Still too big for most of us. We finally see it dropping into a more manageable range on Thursday morning (July 9th) with a 5ft SE swell, but the wind is still cross-shore and the conditions are just marginal at best. By Thursday afternoon the wind swings cross-on and it's a write-off.
Friday morning (July 10th) is small and weak with some crossing wind ripples. But then, Friday afternoon things get a little interesting. The swell hangs around 5ft from the SE with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. That could be a sneaky, super clean session if the banks are holding, even if the energy is pretty low (455). A brief highlight, for sure.
Saturday (July 11th) the surf drops off to a clean 3-4ft with a light offshore WNW wind. It's small, clean, and fun for a log or a foamy. Sunday (July 12th) is even smaller, with a 2ft ESE groundswell (period 11 seconds) in the morning and an offshore wind. It's clean but tiny. After that, Monday (July 13th) and Tuesday (July 14th) are flat to tiny with clean but weak conditions.
Now, for the real standout, you've got to look ahead. Monday morning (July 20th) we see a 5ft S swell building with a short period of 8 seconds and a moderate cross-offshore wind – it's marginal, but it's a sign of things to come.
Then, the big one. Tuesday morning (July 21st) a massive 15ft SSE groundswell (period 12 seconds) is forecast. The combined energy is a staggering 5155. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore, so it'll be clean, but that is a mountain of water. This is a *true* experts-only, very dangerous day. It will likely close out the beach entirely. Wednesday morning (July 22nd) is still a huge 12ft S swell with glassy conditions, another one for the big-wave chargers only.
So if I had to pick the best of the bunch for a normal surfer, it's a toss-up between the glassy Friday arvo (July 10th) for a clean but small session, or the clean, if tiny, Saturday (July 11th). For the risk-takers, the long-range Tuesday (July 21st) is a massive, clean swell, but it's one for the absolute elite. The crowds at Austinmer Beach can be an issue sometimes, but with the size and conditions, the early morning windows will be your best bet for a quieter paddle.
This is Rusty, signing off.
