Imperial:
Alright, crew, let’s have a yarn about the surf over the next couple of weeks. Overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. There’s some solid swell to start, but the breaks are going to be a bit tricky at first. The water temp is sitting around 65°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises with the chill.
So, for Tuesday the 7th, we’ve got a big one at Austinmer Beach. We’re looking at a pumping 12 ft swell from the southeast, and with that combined energy sitting at a massive 4881, it’s a powerhouse. But honestly, this is too big for this spot. It’s a beginner-friendly break and 12 ft is just overwhelming. The cross-shore wind isn’t doing it any favours either. I’d give this a miss unless you’re a proper expert.
Wednesday the 8th still has some energy, with a 8 ft swell in the morning, dropping to 8 ft in the afternoon, both from the southeast. The combined energy is still very strong (1405 and 2271), but again, these are sizes that are really only for experienced surfers. The wind is cross-shore, making it bumpy.
Wednesday night's slow drop brings us into Thursday the 9th. The swell drops to 5 ft, but the conditions are pretty average. The wind is cross-shore, there’s some rain around, and the tide might be playing games. The energy is down to a moderate 721, then 562. Not a great one.
Now, look at Friday the 10th. This is where it gets interesting. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the SE in the morning, but the real story is the wind. It’s glassy. That’s a major positive. The wave energy is moderate at 325. The catch is the quality score is low, so the waves themselves might not be perfect, but if you’re just wanting to get wet and have a few clean little ones, this is your window. The afternoon turns a bit onshore, so the morning is the go.
Saturday the 11th is looking clean and fun. Offshore wind from the WNW in the morning (10 km/h) and NW in the afternoon (10 km/h) will groom up that 4 ft SE swell. The energy is moderate (289). Could be a nice little surf for a Saturday. The crowd factor is listed as "sometimes," so it might get a bit busy, but a clean 4 ft beach break with offshore winds? That's a good time.
Sunday the 12th is a write-off. Swell drops to 2 ft, and the wind, while offshore and clean, is too strong for any decent waves. The energy is weak (104). Not worth paddling out.
The next few days are pretty flat until Wednesday the 15th. But then, hold onto your boards, because Thursday the 16th is the true standout. We’re looking at a solid 7 ft groundswell from the SSE with a very long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is a hefty 1645. The wind is glassy in the morning. This is a serious swell for experienced surfers. It’s too big for beginners, but if you’ve got the skills, this is the pick of the whole forecast. The long period means it’s going to be powerful and have good shape, but at a beach break like this, it might be a bit tricky with the sets closing out.
Friday the 17th still has a nice 5 ft swell from the SSE, and cross-offshore winds in the morning will keep it clean. Energy is moderate (561). A solid follow-up session.
Saturday the 18th rounds out the week with a 5 ft swell, clean offshore wind, and moderate energy (619). A very good option.
After that, the swell fades through the rest of the second week. Sunday the 19th has some smaller 3 ft waves, but the wind is good. By Monday the 20th, the wind is getting strong and it’s not ideal. Tuesday and Wednesday the 21st-22nd see the swell pick up again, but we’re back to 8 ft and 10 ft, which is too big for here again. The energy is strong (1057 to 2233), but that’s a pass.
So, two standouts: Friday the 10th morning for a glassy, clean, beginner-friendly 5 ft session, and Thursday the 16th morning for the experienced crew. That 7 ft groundswell with glassy conditions is the one to circle on your calendar.
Rusty.
