The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s get into it.
Look, I’ll be straight with you: the surf around here is pretty ordinary for the next week and a half, no real standouts until the very end of the run. We’ve got some small, bumpy junk and a lot of days where the wind is just not on our side. There’s a big gap of poor conditions from Wednesday 19th August right through until the middle of the following week, so don’t get your hopes up. The only true highlight is tucked away late in the forecast.
The first real chance of something decent comes on Tuesday 25th August morning at Austinmer Beach. The swell is a tiny 4ft from the NE, but the key here is the wind: dead glassy, light rain, and that’s about as clean as it gets. The combined swell energy is moderate at 173, and the water temp is 64°, about normal for this time of year. It’s a beginner spot, fairly consistent, and the waves are small, so it’s a good session for learners or anyone wanting to get wet without a fight. The downside? The swell period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s a bit of a weak, wind-driven lump. Afternoon turns to poor surf with a cross breeze.
The standout window, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Friday 28th August morning. The swell is 5ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is offshore out of the W at 12 mph. That’s clean, lined-up, and the combined energy is moderate at 333. It’s a fairly consistent break, exposed to the E, and the optimum swell direction is E, so the SSE is a bit off-angle, but the offshore wind will tidy it up. This is the best of the bunch – not huge, but fun. The afternoon is a bit marginal with cross-offshore.
The other dates are mostly duds. Thursday 27th August has a 8ft SSE swell in the morning, but the wind is cross and the energy is very strong at 1339. That’s expert territory, too big for beginners, and the break is exposed, so it’s a washout. Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th are all crossed-up and messy with strong onshore wind. The only other time to mention is Tuesday 1st September morning: a 5ft SE swell with a long 12 second period and light cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is 733, so it’s got punch, but the wind is onshore and the water is lumpy, making it a marginal call.
Honestly, if you’re after a paddle, hit Friday 28th August morning. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too big for the setup. The beach break will likely be interesting for kites on the windy days, but for a surfboard, it’s slim pickings until that one window.
Rusty.
