The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Austinmer Beach over the next couple of weeks.
The outlook starts with a loud, messy roar. Wednesday the 15th sees a solid 7ft swell from the south, but this is just too much grunt for the beach. The energy is big (891) and the wind is all over the place, putting a gnarly cross-chop on the surface. Not a beginner-friendly day, and for the experienced crew, the texture is off. The water temp is 64°, which is about normal for this time of year. That big swell fades into Thursday the 16th with 5ft to 6ft of short-period, poorly organised S/SE swell. The wind stays messy, and the surf is just poor. Friday the 17th drops right off – tiny, weak waves and onshore junk. Saturday the 18th is even smaller, with a weak little 2ft to 3ft mix. Don’t bother. The wait is long.
Now, Sunday the 19th is a teaser. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the ENE with a long 11-second period, and the energy jumps to 699. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s only marginal. Not the day. But Monday the 20th is where it gets interesting. The morning shows 5ft of ENE groundswell, with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the north. The energy is moderate (540) and the surf is set to be very good. This is the first real standout. Tuesday the 21st holds similar 5ft ENE swell and clean offshore winds in the morning. Another very good session. Wednesday the 22nd is a gem – glassy conditions in the afternoon with a light offshore breeze, and 4ft of clean ENE swell. That’s a beautiful combo. The best of the near-term is Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
Looking further out, Thursday the 23rd keeps the quality going. A 5ft to 5ft E swell with a 10-11 second period, and glassy offshore winds in the morning and afternoon. The forecast says “very good” again. Friday the 24th is a bit mixed, with clean morning but a nasty south wind chop in the afternoon. Saturday the 25th starts glassy with 4ft of E swell – a solid pick. But the afternoon turns to a messy 5ft S swell. The second week rounds out with smaller, cleaner waves. Sunday the 26th has glassy 3ft E swell, and Monday the 27th slips down to 3ft. The standouts in this second week are Thursday the 23rd, and the glassy Saturday morning on the 25th.
The best of the whole run? The Monday morning on the 20th and the glassy Wednesday afternoon on the 22nd. Clean, solid, good energy. The later part of the second week is small, so don’t sleep on the first week.
Rusty.
