The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Austinmer Beach. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a few windows where it’ll be worth wetting a line.

The overall pattern is for small, inconsistent south swells, with a few pulses of better energy. The water temp is sitting around 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so don’t expect any surprises when you get in. We’ve got a decent run of glassy mornings, but the afternoons often get chopped up by the sea breeze.

The first real standout is Thursday morning, 27th August. The wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror, with a 5ft swell from the S. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but that clean surface will make it super fun. The combined swell energy is a moderate 353, so there’s some push behind it. This is an exposed beach, so it’ll be picking up everything, but the crowd can be an issue here. It’s often a bit of a zoo when it’s clean, so get there early.

Then we get another beauty on Friday morning, 28th August. Again, dead calm, glassy, with a 3ft swell from the SSE. The period jumps to 11 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. That longer period will give the waves more shape and energy, and the combined energy is a solid 254. This is the pick of the week for a longboard or a mid-length. The crowd factor is still a concern, but the quality of the surf will be worth it.

Saturday morning, 29th August, is also looking clean with a light easterly breeze and a 3ft SSE swell. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s not as good as Friday, but it’ll still be a fun, clean session. The energy is 239. It’s a solid option if you missed Friday.

After that, the swell dips right down. Monday morning, 31st August, is interesting. It’s glassy, but the swell is only 2ft from the SSE. The period is a massive 19 seconds, which is a very long-period groundswell. The combined energy is 351, which sounds like a lot, but with that tiny height, it’ll be a super fat, slow wave. It’s more of a paddle-out exercise than a surf session unless you’ve got a big floaty board.

The next real window opens up on Sunday, 6th September. The morning has a 4ft S swell with an 11-second period and a light NNW breeze, keeping it clean. The combined energy is 294. The afternoon gets even better with a 3ft S swell and a 9 mph offshore wind from the NW. That’s a pristine setup, and the energy is 220. This is a promising session, but it’s a week and a half away, so treat it as a hopeful date on the calendar.

The only other spot to mention is Tuesday morning, 1st September. It’s glassy, but the swell is only 3ft from the SSE. The period is 12 seconds, so the waves will be well-shaped, but it’s on the smaller side. It’s a session for the small-wave gear.

Overall, the first week has the most reliable conditions. The second week is a bit of a gamble, but that Sunday the 6th is looking like a potential cracker. Keep an eye on the wind.

Rusty.
