G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s run through the outlook for Austinmer Beach. The next two weeks have some sweet moments, but also some real thumpers you’ll want to avoid unless you’re a gun.
Friday the 3rd is a write-off – barely a ripple with 2ft waves from the northeast, weak and short period. Water temp’s 66°, just a smidge warmer than normal for winter. Saturday the 4th morning is the first good call. A clean 3ft south swell with a 12-second period is rollin’ in, moderate energy (232). The wind is light cross-offshore from the WSW, so those waves will hold up nicely. Swell direction is south, not the preferred east, but it still works for a fun morning. Sunday the 5th sees the swell pump up to 8ft from the south with strong energy (1332 morning, 1758 arvo) – way too big for this beach break. That’s a skip unless you’re a pro and the wind is cross-shore, which it is, so it’ll be messy. Monday the 6th stays big at 8ft with cross-onshore chop – no good.
Here’s your best call for the first week. Tuesday morning, July 7th. There’s a solid 6ft SE swell with a 10-second period, strong energy at 1132. Light cross-offshore wind from the SW keeps it tidy. The forecast says excellent conditions for experienced surfers – this is not for beginners. The swell direction is off the optimum a touch, but the quality makes it a standout. Wednesday the 8th morning is a close second – glassy conditions with a 6ft SE swell, light offshore from the west. Glossy as a mirror, energy at 691. From there the surf fades into the weekend, getting down to 3ft by Saturday the 11th with glassy but ordinary conditions.
Second week kicks off with Monday July 13th morning. A clean 6ft south swell with offshore wind from the WNW, energy at 599. That’s a proper session for anyone looking for power. The afternoon jumps to 10ft from the south – way too much for this break. Tuesday through Friday are mostly messy with strong winds and small, lumpy waves. Saturday July 18th morning sees a beast of a swell – 13ft from the SSE, energy a massive 4074. That’s clean with cross-offshore wind from the NW, but it’s too big for anyone here. Tow-in territory only. Your best windows are Saturday the 4th morning for a clean, fun south groundswell, and Tuesday the 7th morning for a powerful, experienced-level session. There’s a quiet spell from Friday the 10th through Sunday the 12th with barely anything rideable. Pick your days.
Rusty.
