The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—looking at the next couple of weeks, we’ve got a lot of small, average conditions ahead, with one proper standout that’ll have you checking your boardies. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no worries there.
We start off with a bit of a flat patch. Thursday arvo (20 August) is tiny—around 2ft of messy, weak NE windswell, and the energy reading is a low 60. Honestly, not worth paddling out for. Friday (21 August) is cleaner, with a light offshore breeze and a small pulse around 3ft, but it’s still ordinary—just a few grovelly ones. The energy climbs a little (84) but it’s nothing to write home about. Saturday (22 August) is a write-off with waves dropping below 1ft. That’s the lean start.
Then Sunday (23 August) morning is our first real slight blip. It’s glassy, the swell bumps to 3ft out of the south with a 10-second period, and the energy jumps to 150. That’s actually surfable. Sure, it’s a bit weak, but clean and bump-free. Monday (24 August) morning keeps that going—3ft, clean, cross-off breeze, energy at 157. Still not big, but it’s the best of that first week stretch. After that, Tuesday and Wednesday drop right back off.
Now, the standout. Wednesday 26 August. Both the morning and the arvo fire up. We’re looking at 7ft in the morning and 7ft in the arvo of solid south swell, with a period around 8-9 seconds. The energy readings are strong—727 in the morning and a huge 1171 in the arvo. The winds are cross-off and clean, and the tide is favorable. But here’s the catch: this is Austinmer Beach, and this swell is too big for the joint. Over 5ft is getting chunky for the beginners, and at over 7ft, it’s strictly for the experienced crew. It’s a beach break, so a swell this size will be dumping and closing out. It looks epic, it’ll be a sight, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The models are calling it a high score, but I’d only point the advanced rippers down there.
Thursday 27 August settles back down—surfable but ordinary, around 3ft. The weekend after that (29-30 August) picks up again but gets messy with onshores and chop. A few lumpy 5ft waves but nothing clean.
Looking into the second week, it stays pretty quiet. We’ve got a few small days around 2-3ft, but the wind is all over the shop. A couple of glassy moments on Tuesday 1 September, but the swell’s still weak. The only thing worth noting is Thursday 3 September morning—a long-period 11-second easterly swell at 2ft, but it’s just too small to get excited about. The energy is 115, so it’s not nothing, but you’d be chasing ankle-biters.
So, truth be told, the only day that really stands out is Wednesday 26 August, and even then, it’s a cautionary tale. For the average punter, Sunday 23 August and Monday 24 August mornings are your clean, small-wave cruises. The rest is a lot of waiting for something that never quite comes together.
Stay tuned, forecasts change. Rusty out.
