The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down the next couple of weeks for surf at Austinmer Beach. It’s a mixed bag, honestly, with a real slow start and only a few windows that are worth getting out of bed for.
The first proper chance to paddle out is the morning of Sunday, August 23rd. A modest 4ft south swell, period around 8 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the north. Wave energy is moderate, and the water temp is about 64°F – normal for the season. Not a classic, but a solid, clean option for a beginner-friendly wave.
The standout session in this whole run is the morning of Thursday, August 27th. The wind goes dead glassy out of the south at just 3 mph. Swell holds at 4ft from the south, period around 8 seconds, with moderate energy. That glassy wind is the big win – you’ll be looking at clean, inviting waves. Could be a few people out, but the quality will be the best on offer.
The morning of Friday, August 28th, is another decent call with a light offshore wind from the west-southwest and a clean 3ft south swell. The energy is there, but it’s a touch smaller. Monday, August 31st, also looks good early with a north-northwest offshore breeze and a 3ft south swell.
Looking further into the first week of September, there are a couple of promising but less certain days. The morning of Friday, September 4th, shows a clean 4ft south swell with offshore wind from the northwest. Then, the morning of Saturday, September 5th, is real interesting. The swell period jumps way up to 21 seconds, and the combined energy is very strong, with light north wind. That long-period groundswell can sometimes make a beach break sectiony or straight, but if you like a lined-up wave, it’s one to watch.
There are long gaps in between where the wind is onshore or the swell is too weak. Most afternoons are blown out. On bigger, windier days, this setup starts looking more like a kiteboarding spot than a paddle surf zone.
Grab those glassy mornings.
