The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming for Austinmer Beach. Rusty here, and I’m calling it like I see it.
First few days are a total bust. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th? Forget it. Poor surf, messy cross-shore winds, and tiny, weak swell. Combined energy is low – around 360 on Thursday, then down to 125 on Friday. Saturday the 18th is just as grim, with 3ft to 3ft swell but onshore chop ruining any chance of a clean wave.
We get a little life on Sunday the 19th. Swell picks up to about 5ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period. Combined energy hits 557 – moderate. Winds are light, but still a bit cross-shore, so it’s only marginal. Surfable, but not great.
The real standout is Monday the 20th. Monday morning is the one. Swell holds at about 5ft from the ENE, and the wind goes light from the NW, giving us clean, cross-offshore conditions. Combined energy is 558. The water temp is pretty average for July – nothing unusual. Austinmer Beach is a beginner-friendly spot, and with fairly consistent waves, it’s a solid choice. Crowds are “sometimes,” so you might have company, but it won’t be a circus. That’s your session.
Tuesday morning the 21st is a decent backup. Swell drops to 4ft, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the NW. Combined energy is 319. Waves will be clean and smooth, just a touch smaller. Perfect for a quiet, relaxed paddle.
From Wednesday the 22nd, it fades fast. Swell drops under 3ft after Thursday the 23rd, and while we get some glassy windows (like Thursday afternoon and Sunday the 27th morning), the wave energy is weak – under 114. The last week of July into August is mostly flat. A few very long-period swells show up – 17 seconds on Tuesday the 28th and 14 seconds on the 29th – but they’re tiny, barely 0.7ft to 1.0ft. That kind of long period at that size won’t break cleanly on a beach. It’s a long dry spell after that Monday-Tuesday window.
Bottom line: Monday the 20th morning is your best shot. Clean winds, solid 5ft ENE swell. Don’t sleep on it.
