Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Austinmer Beach.

Truth be told, the next few days are a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a pulse of 5ft SE swell hanging around Thursday and Friday, but the wind is messy – cross and cross-on – and the energy’s only moderate at best (682). It’s marginal, and the water temp is sitting at 65°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Come Saturday morning the 11th of July, things clean up nicely. The wind swings to a light offshore from the NW, and the swell drops to 4ft, still from the SE. It’s not big, but it’ll be clean and the combined energy is moderate (352). For a beginner-friendly spot like Austinmer, that’s a decent window. It’s a beach break, exposed to the east, and the optimum swell direction is from the east, so this SE swell is going to wrap in okay. Crowds can show up sometimes, but for a Saturday morning with clean conditions, it’s worth a paddle.

Sunday the 12th sees the swell drop right off – down to 2ft, and the energy is weak (92). The wind is offshore, but there’s just not enough push to get excited about. Monday and Tuesday are even smaller, with the swell bottoming out at 0.3ft by Tuesday afternoon. That’s a few days of flatness, so save your energy.

From Wednesday the 15th, things get wild. A strong S wind kicks up, and the swell jumps to 6ft, then 10ft, and by Thursday the 16th we’re looking at 15ft of SSE swell. The combined energy hits 4077, which is very strong. But the wind is onshore and howling at 22 mph, so it’s going to be a churned-up mess. This is not paddle surfing – this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than anything else. It stays big and messy right through the weekend of the 18th and 19th, with the swell holding at 10ft to 13ft. The spot is exposed, so it’s just too big for a beginner break, and the wind is all wrong.

The standout window comes around Monday the 20th of July. The swell drops back to a manageable 5ft from the SE, with a light offshore from the NNW in the morning. It’ll be clean, with moderate energy (676), and the crowd profile is manageable. That’s your best bet – a solid, clean day for a surf. The 21st also looks tidy with offshore wind and 4ft to 3ft ESE swell, good for a relaxed session.

Then on the 24th of July, Friday morning, we’ve got another potential winner. The swell is 6ft from the ESE, combined energy is 907 (moderate-to-strong), and the wind is light offshore from the NW. It’ll be clean, and the afternoon picks up a bit more size and a cross-off breeze. It’s still a beach break, and with a period of 11 seconds, it’s a groundswell that might be a bit straight for the beach, but it’ll still offer some fun lines.

So, overall, the best on offer is Monday the 20th and Friday the 24th. The rest is either flat, too small, or blown out and too big. Keep an eye on the 20th – that’s your call.

Rusty.
