The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at what’s on the cards for Austinmer Beach over the next 16 days. It’s a pretty slow start, so don’t rush down there just yet. The first proper chance to get wet doesn’t come around until the morning of Sunday, July 19th, so that’s a few days of flat or poor conditions to sit through.
We kick off with a couple of days of pretty ordinary stuff. Thursday the 16th has a 6 ft southerly swell, but it’s short-period at 7 seconds and the wind is a cross-on from the south at 15 mph – the combined swell energy is moderate at 352, but the surf is just poor. Friday the 17th is much the same, with a 4 ft southerly swell and a cross-onshore wind, energy dropping to 124. Saturday the 18th sees a tiny 2 ft swell in the morning and then a 2 ft easterly in the arvo, both with cross-onshore breeze – not worth a paddle.
Now, Sunday, July 19th morning is where things start to look up. The swell picks up to 5 ft from the east-northeast with a decent 10-second period, and the wind goes glassy out of the south at just 3 mph. That’s clean as a whistle. Combined energy is a solid 467 – moderate to strong. Expect good surf conditions. The arvo sees the swell bump to 5 ft from the same direction, period hitting 11 seconds, but the wind swings onshore from the east-southeast at 6 mph, making it a bit more marginal.
Monday, July 20th morning is the real standout of this forecast. You’ve got a 5 ft east-northeast swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the north-northwest at 6 mph. Combined energy is 577 – strong and punchy. This is very good surf, clean and well-shaped. The afternoon stays similar in size but the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s a bit less clean.
Tuesday, July 21st morning is another glassy morning – 4 ft east-northeast swell, 10-second period, zero wind. Combined energy at 373. Good surf, but the swell is dropping. The arvo gets a light cross-on breeze, so it’s less appealing.
After that, the middle of the week is small. Wednesday the 22nd has a 3 ft east-northeast swell with a clean offshore wind in the morning from the west at 3 mph, but it’s just surfable – nothing to write home about. Thursday the 23rd is similar with 3 ft swell and offshore breezes. Energy is low, around 121. The crowd factor at Austinmer Beach can be there sometimes, so for these smaller days it’s probably not worth the fight.
Then we get a spike on Friday, July 24th morning. The guidance flags a 8 ft southerly swell with a 10-second period, combined energy absolutely ripping at 1556 – very strong. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the southwest. But here’s the thing – that’s too big for this exposed beach break. For beginners, anything over 5 ft is a handful, and 8 ft is expert territory only. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The afternoon drops to 6 ft and the energy is down to 495, which is more manageable, but still a solid wave.
Saturday, July 25th has a 5 ft southerly swell in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze, but by the arvo the wind howls from the south at 19 mph, making it a choppy mess.
The next real highlight comes on Monday, July 27th morning. A 6 ft southerly swell with a 10-second period, combined energy of 643 – strong. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the northwest at 3 mph. That’s very good surf, clean and powerful. The rest of that week is a mix of marginal or poor conditions, with onshore winds and lumpy seas.
Finally, Friday, July 31st morning looks promising. A 7 ft southerly swell with an 8-second period, energy at 950 – strong. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north at 6 mph, so it should be clean. That’s another very good option for experienced surfers.
Overall, the best of the lot is Monday, July 20th morning – a clean 5 ft east-northeast swell with light cross-offshore wind and strong energy. The other standout is Friday, July 31st morning, with that 7 ft southerly swell and clean conditions, but it’s further out and a little less certain. For the rest, you’ll be picking through smaller or messier days. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay flat for long around here.
Rusty.
