Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Austinmer Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, things are looking pretty ordinary. We've got a bit of a flat spell to kick things off. The first real chance of a wave doesn't come until the morning of Saturday the 4th of July. Before that, Friday the 3rd has some tiny 1ft swell, but it's from the north-east with a poor 8-second period and a fresh cross-offshore wind. It's not worth paddling out for.
So, Saturday morning the 4th is our first real call. There's a 3ft south swell with a 9-second period. The combined wave energy is moderate at 146, but that's about where the good news ends. The wind is a cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph, which keeps things reasonably clean, but the conditions are described as very ordinary. It’s a beginner-friendly break anyway, so if you’re just starting out, you might get a few fun ones.
Sunday the 5th is where things get interesting, but it's a big caution sign. The swell builds to a solid 8ft from the south with a 10-second period. The wave energy is massive, hitting 1393. This is too big for beginners and squarely in expert territory. The wind is a cross-shore from the SSW at 16 mph, creating a moderate cross-chop. It’s not going to be clean. Honestly, with that much power and crosswind, this setup might actually be more fun for the kite surfers than for us paddle folk.
The rest of the first week, from Monday the 6th through Thursday the 9th, the swell stays heavy, well over 7ft, but the wind is consistently cross or cross-onshore, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. It's big, but not good. The combined energy stays well into the strong zone, but without favourable wind, it's a write-off.
We finally get a bit of relief on Saturday the 11th. The swell drops to 4ft from the south-east with a 9-second period, and the wave energy is a much more manageable 235. But the real headline here is the glassy conditions on Saturday afternoon. The wind goes completely calm. That's a rare treat. The waves will be clean as a whistle. This is the standout of the entire forecast period. It’s a small, clean window, but if you can get out there, it'll be worth it.
After that, the swell fades right away. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th have tiny waves under 3ft, and it’s all very ordinary. Then, on Tuesday the 14th, another massive pulse of south swell hits, with 12ft on the morning and 10ft in the afternoon. The wave energy is off the charts, over 4000 on Tuesday morning. The wind is offshore, so it will look clean, but it is far too big for this spot. That's for experts only, and even then, it's pushing the limits.
From Wednesday the 15th right through to the end of the forecast on Saturday the 18th, it's back to small, poor surf with messy cross-shore winds. Nothing to get excited about.
The Takeaway: The one true standout is the glassy Saturday afternoon on the 11th of July. Get out for a clean, small-wave session. Everything else is either too small, too messy, or way too big.
Rusty.
