The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Austinmer Beach.
It’s a quiet start, and we’re looking at a pretty long stretch of nothing much to write home about. From now through the 18th of July, it’s a bust. Winds are onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is weak and messy. You’re looking at combined energy around 410 (moderate) to start, but it’s all short-period, wind-affected junk. Not worth wetting a wetsuit for.
Things start to shift on the morning of Sunday the 19th. The combined energy jumps up to 547 (moderate), with a 6ft swell from the ENE at a 10-second period, which gives it some shape. The wind is light cross-onshore from the SE, so it’s a bit bumpy but surfable. That afternoon, the energy even pushes to 612 (moderate). It’s still marginal, but it’s the first real pulse.
The standout window opens up on Monday the 20th. The morning is the pick of the entire forecast. We’ve got a clean 5ft ENE groundswell holding at a 10-second period, with a light offshore from the NNW. Combined energy is 567 (moderate). The water is a pretty normal 64°F for this time of year, so nothing wild there. This is your session. Get out there early before the wind swings NE in the afternoon and puts a bit of a cross-chop on it.
Tuesday the 21st morning is still worth a look with 4ft of clean swell and a light offshore, but the energy is tailing off to 363. Wednesday the 22nd morning is glassy – pure glass with the SW wind dropping to nothing – but the swell is down to 4ft, so it’s a fun, small-wave board day.
After that, it drops off hard. The 23rd and 24th offer tiny, ordinary waves, and by the 25th and 26th the energy is weak (76 to 192), and the wind is messy again. There’s a brief clean spell on the 26th afternoon with a 2ft S swell, but it’s small.
Now, look out for the 28th of July. The models are throwing a big spike at us: a 8ft S swell on the Tuesday morning, with combined energy absolutely screaming at 1462 (strong). That’s a lot of water moving. But this is a beginner-friendly beach break, and that size is really only for experts. The cross-shore wind will make it a messy, powerful beast. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 8ft, but still too big for most punters. This window is more interesting for kitesurfers than paddle surfers.
The 30th of July morning brings a cleaner 5ft SSE groundswell with a longer 11-second period and a light offshore. Energy is 611 (moderate). That’s a solid, clean option for the more experienced crew, but it’s a long way off, so don’t book the day off work just yet.
So, overall, the best bet is absolutely Monday the 20th of July morning. The backup is the glassy Wednesday the 22nd morning for smaller waves, and the long-range promise of the 30th of July.
Rusty.
