Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming down the line. Straight up, I gotta be real with you – this is a tough run. The forecast is showing a persistent onshore wind from the ENE, blowing right into the faces of the waves, and that’s just not gonna give us the clean lines we’re after. The swell is hanging in there, but the quality is shot. There’s a solid stretch here where the conditions are just poor for a surf, so don’t get your hopes up for the next week or so.
We’re looking at a gap that runs from the start of the forecast right through till around the 19th of July. That’s a long stretch of onshore slop. Even though there’s some moderate wave energy in the water – we’re seeing combined energy values in the 400-600 range on a few days – the wind is just ruining it. The swell is coming from the ENE, which is the same direction as the wind, and with a short period of 8 seconds, it’s not going to have any push or shape. It’s just going to be choppy and bumpy. The swell height hangs around the 6 ft to 8 ft for most of that first week, which is a good size, but totally unsurfable in these conditions.
Let’s talk about the spot that’s in the mix here: Kealia. This is a beach and reef set-up, and it’s exposed, so it catches everything. With this onshore wind, it’s going to be a mess. The water temperature is sitting at 79°F with no anomaly, so pretty average for this time of year, which is normal. But don’t be thinking of a paddle right now. The crowds are noted as “often” here, which usually means it’s a popular spot, but with this poor quality, it’ll be quiet.
Now, we do see a glimmer of hope way out there. Around Sunday the 19th of July, the wind starts to shift. We get a bit of a cross-on situation on the morning, and then by Monday the 20th, the wind drops a touch and swings a bit more east. Still onshore, but lighter at 12 mph. The swell is still coming from the ENE, about 6 ft to 7 ft, and period is still a short 8 seconds. The energy stays moderate (468-589). It’s not a standout by any means, but compared to the week before, it’s the least bad option. For an expert-level surfer who just needs a paddle, Monday the 20th afternoon might offer a slightly less bumpy wave. But honestly, if you’ve got a kite, this setup might be more interesting for you than a surfboard.
There’s no real standout session here. If I had to pick one, it’d be the 20th of July afternoon at Kealia, but only if you’re desperate. It’s a long-range call, so don’t bank on it.
Rusty.
