Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: looking over Kealia for the next couple of weeks is a tough one. Truth be told, there isn't a single standout session in the whole 16-day window. The surf's on the small side, and the wind is going to be a real problem.
Right from the get-go, starting Thursday morning the 2nd of July, the swell rolls in at about 6 ft from the ENE but with a short period of only 8 seconds. That onshore wind, blowing at 12 mph, is going to chop it all up. The water temperature is 78°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The wave energy is moderate at best with a reading of 708, but with that wind, it’s going to be messy rather than powerful.
This pattern just locks in. Friday the 3rd through the weekend stays similar: 5 ft to 6 ft, all from ENE, period sitting at 7 to 8 seconds. The wind stays onshore at 16 mph, churning up poor surf. The energy stays moderate, never really hitting the sweet spot, hovering between 300 and 500. The rain showers that come through on Friday, Sunday, and Monday won’t help the vibe either.
Into the second week, around Monday the 6th, we see the swell actually bump up a little to 7 ft to 7 ft. But here's the kicker – the wind picks up to 19 mph on Tuesday the 7th. That’s a fresh breeze right in your face. For a beach and reef break like Kealia, that’s just a washing machine. At 7 ft with short period and onshore wind, that’s expert territory for the wrong reasons – it’ll be a messy, blown-out paddle.
We finally see the swell ease back to about 5 ft to 4 ft by the 16th and 17th of July, but it’s still with that onshore wind. The energy drops to two-digit figures near the end (227 being the lowest), which is weak. The wind direction swings a little more to the East and NE, but still onshore.
Honestly, with this combination of onshore wind and short-period swell, Kealia would be way more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers. There’s no clean, glassy window here, and no standout day where you’d want to drop everything and go. Hang tight, folks – forecasts change.
Rusty.
