The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's shaping up for us. It's a tough stretch ahead, I won't kid you. The whole 16-day run from the 17th of August through to the 1st of September is pretty much a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The onshore easterly wind barely lets up, and most of the time it's just too messy to get excited about. There's a long gap with absolutely no solid recommendations, so don't be holding your breath for any quick fixes.
The only spot on the cards is Kealia, a beach and reef setup that's fairly consistent but has a lot going against it for the foreseeable future. The water temp here is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
For Monday the 17th, we've got some afternoon swell at 6 ft from the east, but that onshore wind at 16 mph is going to chop it all up. The combined wave energy is moderate (367), but the quality is just poor. That sets the tone for the whole week. Tuesday the 18th drops to a smaller 5 ft, still onshore, energy dropping to 194. It just doesn't get clean. Wednesday the 19th is a bit smaller again at 3 ft, and while the period stretches to 9 seconds, the wind is still on it, energy at 196. Thursday and Friday see tiny 2 ft to 3 ft waves with light cross-onshore breezes, but energy is weak (115 or less) and there's just no push.
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd sees a little bump, with Sunday the 23rd bringing 6 ft swell, but the wind is howling onshore at 12-16 mph and the period is a short 7 seconds. Energy kicks up to 311-332, but it's all wind-affected slop. This pattern pretty much holds through the following week. By Monday the 25th, we're looking at 6 ft swell with onshore winds at 19 mph and energy climbing to 474 – this is more of a warning than an invite. From the 26th through to the 30th of August, the swell pushes over 7 ft, hitting 8 ft on the 28th and 29th. That's too big for beginners and only really for experienced surfers, but with the onshore wind, it's a mess. Energy gets strong – hitting 1080 on the Friday afternoon of the 28th – but with those winds and short 8-9 second periods, it's unlikely to have any shape. The setup here looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the strong onshore winds and size.
We finally see a drop-off as we roll into the 31st of August and the 1st of September, with swell dropping back to 3 ft to 4 ft, but the onshore easterly wind doesn't let up. There is no standout session in this forecast. Nothing is even a "maybe." It's just a long, flat, windy outlook.
Rusty.
