The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a pretty quiet start. The surf is tiny, with a very long period 16-second groundswell from the south, but it's barely pushing 1 ft on Wednesday the 19th. The energy is weak (184), and while the wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze, there just isn't enough swell to get excited about. It's a poor surf conditions call, so don't bother paddling out.
Things don't improve much through Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st. We see a slight bump to 2 ft from the SSW with a still-long 17-18 second period, and the energy creeps up to a moderate 338 on Friday morning. The wind stays light and cross-off on Thursday, making the surf clean, but the size is just too small to offer any real ride. Friday gets a bit more messy with a light cross-shore wind.
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is a write-off. Saturday has a bit of swell, 2 ft, but it's weak and the wind picks up to a moderate 20-25 km/h breeze. Then on Sunday, the swell direction swings to the east and the period drops to a short 7 seconds. The height jumps to 6 ft (moderate energy around 583), but that's a windswell, not a proper groundswell. It's going to be grovelly and poor.
From Monday the 24th through to the end of the month, we're in a slump. The swell stays between 4 ft and 7 ft from the east, but the period is consistently short (6-8 seconds), which means weak, choppy waves. The wind is a moderate to fresh cross-off breeze, but it's not enough to save the poor surf quality. This is a long stretch of days with nothing to recommend.
Now, there is a flicker of hope in the first week of September. On Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd, we see a solid pulse of easterly swell. The morning of the 1st is still a bit messy with 5 ft at 8 seconds, but by the afternoon it jumps to 6 ft and the period stretches out to a very long 13 seconds. The energy is massive – 1753 – which is very strong. By Wednesday morning the 2nd, we're looking at a clean 7 ft swell from the east, also at 13 seconds, with even more energy (1992). This is a proper groundswell.
The stand-out is Brenneckes itself. For the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September, we have a solid 7 ft of east swell with a very long 13-second period. Combined with a clean, cross-offshore breeze, this is going to be the best window of the whole forecast. The caveat is that at 7 ft, it's getting into expert territory, especially for a reef break. The wind is a fresh 30 km/h from the NE, so it'll be blowing across the face, but it should still be offshore enough to keep it clean. The breaking period is a very long 13 seconds, which means long lulls between sets, but when they come, they'll have real power. The energy is very strong (1992). This is definitely the one to aim for.
After that, it drops off again quickly. The swell collapses back to 2 ft on Thursday the 3rd with a short period, and the wind is up, so don't bank on anything after that.
To sum it up: the next two weeks are mostly a bust. The first real, rideable surf is a long way off, on the 1st and 2nd of September. The clear standout is the morning of Wednesday the 2nd at Brenneckes – 7 ft east swell, very long period, and clean winds. Keep that date circled on the calendar, but remember it's a long-range call, so things could shift.
Rusty.
