The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, long gap with barely a ripple to get excited about. For the next 11 days, from Monday the 17th right through to Thursday the 28th of August, the surf is mostly flat or junk. The swell heights barely tickle 2 ft, and the periods are short or just meh. The combined energy is weak, mostly in the single or low double digits (6 to 55), so don’t expect any push. Wind is often cross-onshore or onshore, keeping things bumpy and chopped up. Even when it does go glassy or light offshore, there’s just no swell to work with. It’s a proper drought.
Then we finally see a little pulse of life around Saturday the 29th of August. The morning at Jupiter Inlet South Jetty (advanced spot, fairly consistent) shows a small NNE swell coming in at about 2 ft, with a period of 8 seconds and clean conditions thanks to a light offshore wind from the west. The water temperature is sitting at 87°, which is about normal for this time of year. The combined energy bumps up to 97 – weak but at least it’s something. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Not gonna lie, it’s not a standout day – it’s just the best of a bad bunch. The afternoon gets messy with cross-onshore winds again.
Sunday the 30th of August morning is a repeat: about 3 ft from the NNE, 8 seconds, clean, combined energy at 100. Again, just barely surfable. After that, it dribbles back down into tiny, weak, choppy conditions through the start of September.
So what’s the pick? If you’re desperate for a paddle, the Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th mornings are your only real chances. It’s small, it’s slow, but it’s clean. For this spot, a blank run of nearly two weeks isn’t totally out of the ordinary – but it stings. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever.
Stay hopeful.
– Rusty
