The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight – the next couple of weeks don’t exactly have me jumping out of my wetsuit. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and generally messy conditions. For the first several days, you’re battling onshore winds and barely any swell. It’s a flat spell, no two ways about it. The real action doesn’t even start to whisper until the very end of the month.
The first glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Saturday, August 1st at Jupiter Inlet South Jetty. Now, it’s not a classic, but it’s the only thing worth paddling for. We’re looking at a small 2ft swell rolling in from the NNE. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s not going to be a groundswell with heaps of push, but it has a little bit of energy (combined swell energy is 69). The real winner here is the wind – a light NNW breeze, which is a nice cross-off, so the surface should be clean. It’s a jetty, so it can handle a bit of direction, but with this size, it’s going to be soft and crumbly. It’s only for those who are really keen for a slide. The water temp is sitting right around 86°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
In the week that follows, it’s pretty slim pickings. The morning of Sunday, August 2nd has a little cross-off wind again, but the swell drops back to 2ft with even less energy. The real story is the week after that, with some solid offshore winds showing up. You’ll see clean conditions on the Monday morning of July 27th and pretty much the whole week through Wednesday, July 29th, the wind is howling offshore from the WSW – that’s 12-18 mph for a clean, groomed face. But the problem is the swell is pathetically small, barely 0.7ft to 1ft. It’s glassy and clean, but you’ll be floating over the reef. For a beginner, this is a waste of time because it’s too small to ride. It’s a rare display of perfect wind on a building-sized swell. Honestly, if you’re a kiter, this wind setup is way more interesting than the waves.
The best absolute stand-out is that Saturday morning, August 1st. It’s not big, but it’s the only session where the combo of swell and wind comes together for a paddle. Just don’t expect any barrels.
