The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of flatness and junk on the way. I’ve gotta call it like I see it.
The first real chance at anything surfable shows up on Thursday, August 27th at Jupiter Inlet South Jetty. Before that? Nada. It’s a big gap of almost 10 days with no real recommendations. The water temp is sitting right around 86.5°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
On that Thursday morning the 27th, we finally see a tiny bump of groundswell. The swell is coming from the ESE at 1 ft, but get this – the period is a long 12 seconds. That’s genuine groundswell energy. The combined energy is still pretty weak at (77), so it’s not gonna be packing any punch. The real kicker here is the wind. We’ve got a glassy morning with a light NNE breeze. For a jetty break, that’s about as clean as it gets. The swell is tiny, but for an advanced crew on a longboard or a fish, it might be worth a dawny. The break itself is fairly consistent, so you won’t be waiting forever between sets, though crowds are often a factor here. The swell direction (ESE) isn’t a perfect match for the break’s optimum (NE), so it’ll be a bit weak on the sandbar, but that clean face will make up for it.
Honestly, that Thursday morning is the only standout in the whole 16-day window. Everything else is either flat, onshore junk, or too small to bother with. After that morning, we’re back to poor conditions. The rest of the second week shows a few little bumps, but the wind swings around onshore and chops it all up. The 2.5 ft stuff on the 26th has a short, weak period of 5 seconds and onshore wind – that’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
So, keep your expectations low. That Thursday the 27th is your best (and really only) shot. Set the alarm, hope the forecast holds, and be ready to work for those little nuggets.
