The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for the next 16 days and, well, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing for the better part of two weeks, with just a few fleeting moments that might be worth a paddle.
The problem is plain to see: tiny leftover swell and a persistent cross-onshore wind that's going to keep things messy. The first real opportunity, if you can call it that, is a couple of weeks out. The water’s sitting at a warm 86°F, which is about 2°F above normal for this time of year – feels like bathwater.
We’ve got a long gap with no real surf on offer. From Friday the 17th of July all the way through to the end of the month, the energy is just pitiful. Every single day is tagged as “poor surf conditions.” The combined wave energy is scraping along at less than 100, most of the time in the teens or twenties, which is essentially flat. The swell heights are mostly a pathetic 0.7ft to 2ft, with periods stuck under 10 seconds – that’s just wind chop, not groundswell. The wind is a constant cross-onshore from the SE or SSE, just making what little bump there is a choppy, bumpy mess. There’s no point even talking about a standout break here because there’s nothing to stand out. It’s a full-on flat spell.
Now, you might be wondering about Jupiter Inlet South Jetty (Florida). The guidance says it’s a fairly consistent break, but that doesn’t help when the ocean is just giving us scraps. It’s an advanced spot, and it’s usually an exposed NE magnet, but the swell is coming from the wrong direction and is way too small to wrap in properly. The crowds are often there, but they won’t be for this.
The light at the end of the tunnel comes on Wednesday the 29th of July. We finally see a glassy morning with a dead-still wind, and the period pushes up to 9 seconds. The swell is still tiny at 0.7ft, but it’s clean. That’s about the best we get.
Then on Thursday the 30th of July, the morning is glassy again with a 0.7ft swell from the ENE, but the period jumps to 11 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which means it’ll have a bit more shape and energy, but it’s still only 0.7ft.
Friday the 31st of July is the same story – glassy morning, 0.7ft, but a 10-second period. The combined energy is still only 11, so it’s weak. But it’s glassy. For a true log or a longboard, on a high tide, it might be a laugh.
The best bet in the whole 16 days, and I mean the only one that’s worth getting your wetsuit for, is Saturday the 1st of August. The morning at Jupiter Inlet South Jetty will see a gentle offshore wind from the W, which is a proper offshore for this spot. The swell is a bit bigger, at 1ft, but the period is a short 4 seconds from the S. The combined energy is still weak at 13, but it’s clean. The wind is offshore, and that’s a massive plus. It’s not a standout for size, it’s a standout for being the only clean window in the whole run. The afternoon swings back to a cross-shore, so the morning is the move.
Overall, this is a classic summer flat spell. Hang up the shortboard, dig out the longboard or the foamie, and set your alarm for the morning of the 1st of August. That’s your best shot.
Rusty.
