The Lowdown
Alright, look, I’m gonna level with you. The next 16 days here at Itamambuca start off a bit flat and messy, and we’ve got a long wait before anything really gets going. The first week or so is pretty ordinary, with a lot of poor conditions and swell direction that doesn't suit this river mouth setup at all. The early mornings on the 22nd and 23rd give a glimpse of something better, but the wind and conditions on those afternoons just kill it.
The real standout window, the one that’s got my attention, is around Tuesday the 25th. That morning we’re looking at a solid 6ft groundswell pushing in from the SSE with a period of 14 seconds. That’s serious energy (1464), and the wind is glassy out of the ESE – just 3 mph. That’ll have Chocks (Itamambuca) looking smooth and lined up. The water is much warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 73°, so that’s a nice bonus. It’s a river break, so that long-period swell will wrap in nicely, giving you good shape. Be mindful though, the wave size is into the 6ft range, so it’s not one for the grommets or learners. The afternoon stays good too, with 5ft and glassy wind, so you can surf through the day.
The following days, the 26th and 27th, still have some size but the wind conditions get a bit more questionable. You might get a decent morning session on the 27th with 5ft swell and glassy wind, but the energy drops a bit. After that, the surf fades away significantly from the 30th onward, with tiny 2ft to 3ft swell and mostly onshore wind patterns. There’s a bit more energy trying to come in around the 3rd and 4th of September, but the conditions look poor, and the wind is just all wrong. The long-range call for the 3rd and 4th has some size (6ft on the 3rd afternoon, for instance), but with high uncertainty and cross-shore wind, it’s nothing to get excited about yet.
So, to put it plainly: if you’ve got a window, make it Tuesday the 25th. That’s the day. The rest of the first week is underwhelming, and the second week looks even quieter. It’s one of those forecasts where you wait for one good day, and you jump on it.
Stay stoked.
