The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let's break down what Inner Kom has in store for the next couple of weeks. There's a real range coming, from small stuff for the learners to some heavy slabs for the experienced heads.
Water temp is around 60°F, which is pretty standard for the season, so don't be fooled into thinking it's gonna be warm. We kick off on Tuesday, July 14th, but it’s a bit of a bummer. We've got a weak 3ft west swell with a short 10-second period. The energy is low (321). It's cross-on and choppy. Not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 15th turns up the volume. The morning shows a 5ft southwest swell with a much longer 17-second period. Energy jumps to strong (1621), but the light wind is cross-on, so the face is a bit messy. The afternoon pushes to a punchy 10ft from the southwest (16 seconds) and very strong energy (4271), but the cross wind messes with the surface. That size is for the pros only.
Circle Thursday morning, July 16th on your calendar. This is a winner. The wind goes dead glassy, zero knots, and we've got a clean 8ft southwest swell at a nice 13 seconds. The energy is strong (2381). Conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. That morning is the one to be on. The afternoon gets a cross-on breeze again, so get your session early.
Through Friday the 17th to Sunday the 19th, there's cleaner surf with offshore and cross-off winds (6ft to 7ft from the west-southwest). The energy is moderate to strong. Surfable, but not the highlight. Then Tuesday morning, July 21st is another clear standout. We get glassy conditions again, with 8ft of 14-second southwest groundswell and very strong energy (2485). Another excellent window for the crew that can handle it.
Wednesday the 22nd gets wild and ugly. The swell jumps to a powerful 13ft from the southwest with a 14-second period and massive energy (6281), but it’s slashed by a strong 19 mph cross-on wind, making it a lumpy mess. A day for the camera, not the board.
Looking into the second week, the prime target is Friday morning, July 24th. We're talking a huge 16ft southwest swell, a 13-second period, insane very strong energy (7251), and glassy conditions. This is described as exceptional for expert surfers only. The wind turns clean and offshore on the 26th with 10ft and 8ft swells keeping the energy very strong, so those mornings could be incredible too.
The run from the 27th onwards keeps the energy very high with 6ft to 15ft swells, but the wind is more often cross-on or cross, leaving the conditions a bit bumpy. For the real chargers, there will be plenty to play with, especially on the afternoon of the 28th when the wind cleans up with a 12ft southwest swell.
To wrap it up: the Tuesday (21st) and Friday (24th) mornings are the absolute standouts for the experienced surfer. The glassy Thursday (16th) is your other perfect window. Just skip the first few days.
Rusty.
