The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead at Inner Kom, and while it starts off a bit average, there’s some real magic hiding in the back half if you’re patient.
The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year—nothing unusual, so just your usual shorty or spring suit.
Right off the bat, Saturday morning the 18th is a bit of a letdown. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the SW at 9 seconds, but that cross-onshore wind from the NW makes it choppy and messy. The combined energy is moderate (719), but it’s not doing anyone any favours. Saturday afternoon cleans up a bit with a longer 13-second period, but still cross-onshore and only 4 ft. Not worth rushing out.
Sunday the 19th morning is rough—5 ft SW with a moderate cross-onshore breeze and choppy. The afternoon though? Now we’re talking. A clean 7 ft SW groundswell, light cross-off wind from the south, and the energy jumps to 1100. Still fairly beginner-friendly, but the crowd factor is there sometimes. It’s a good session.
Monday the 20th morning goes glassy—dead calm, 5 ft from the SSW with a period of 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (615), and it’s clean. Nice little session for a quiet paddle. Monday afternoon drops off a bit.
Now, Tuesday the 21st morning is a standout. Glassy conditions, 7 ft of SSW groundswell with a 14-second period—long, powerful lines. The energy is strong (1540). This is a solid step up, but it’s too big for beginners. For the experienced crew, it’s a gem. Tuesday afternoon gets onshore and lumpy.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are blown out by strong northwesterlies. Big, messy surf—12 ft on Wednesday, but it’s poor. Not worth it.
The real highlight? Friday the 24th morning. Clear skies, 13 ft of SW groundswell at 15 seconds—that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy is massive (6086). Offshore wind from the ESE, clean. This is for experts only. The reef and point setup at Inner Kom will handle this long-period energy beautifully, but it’s not a beginner wave. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
Saturday the 25th morning keeps the good times rolling—8 ft SW at 13 seconds, gentle offshore wind from the ESE, clean. Energy is strong (2994). Still a big wave, but a bit more manageable than Friday. Afternoon stays clean and solid.
Sunday the 26th gets windy—strong southerlies, 7 ft SW, but it’s clean. The wind is howling though, so it’s more of a kite session than a paddle. Monday the 27th morning sees offshore winds again, 8 ft SW at 15 seconds, clean and powerful. Another good one for the experienced.
After that, the surf tapers off. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are smaller, choppy, or just average. By Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st, the wind turns onshore and it’s messy. The first week of August looks poor—cross-onshore winds, lumpy, and small. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mixed, but Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are the standouts—big, clean, powerful groundswell with offshore winds. If you’re an expert, get in the water. For everyone else, Tuesday the 21st morning is the best of the smaller, cleaner days.
Rusty.
