The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. The ocean’s got a bit of a pulse coming through, but it’s a mixed bag of conditions. The standout window is definitely around the end of August and the start of September, with a proper groundswell filling in. You’ll need to be patient and pick your moments.
The first real chance to get wet is from Friday afternoon, the 21st of August. There’s a 5 ft swell from the WSW, but a cross-off wind from the SSE is making it look okay. The water’s sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than average for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit. The energy is moderate (768), but it’s more of a warm-up. Saturday morning the 22nd is a bit of a write-off with a cross-on wind, but Saturday afternoon picks up to 6 ft from the SW, still a bit messy.
Now, Sunday the 23rd is where things start to get interesting. The morning brings a beautiful 7 ft WSW swell with light, clean cross-off winds from the SSE. The energy is strong (1824), and the period is a solid 13 seconds, so these are proper groundswell lines. This is much better for the reef and point setup at Inner Kom, as it’ll handle the long period well. This is still a healthy size, maybe a bit much for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’s a cracker. Sunday afternoon holds at 8 ft with similar clean conditions.
Monday the 24th sees the swell drop slightly to 6 ft but still clean offshore winds. The energy drops a bit (854-972), but it’s still surfable. The real hidden gem, however, is Tuesday the 25th. The morning shows a 8 ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a fresh offshore wind from the SE. The energy is pumping at 2436. That’s a big, powerful wave. The wind is strong offshore, so it’ll be clean, but it’s going to be a handful. This is for experts only at that size. The afternoon is similar, though the wind gets stronger, making it a chore to paddle into.
The surf then settles into a nice run from Wednesday the 26th to Friday the 28th of August. Wednesday has gentle offshore winds with a 4 ft to 4 ft WSW swell, perfect for a longboard or a funboard. The energy is moderate (674-791). Thursday the 27th is a bit of a write-off with cross-on wind, but Friday the 28th is a stunner. A 4 ft to 5 ft WSW swell with a 14-second period and light offshore or cross-off winds. The energy is strong (1299-1333) for the size. This is a long, clean, and fun day.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th of August gets wild. Saturday the 29th is a mess with strong winds and a 12 ft W swell from a short 9-second period. That’s a choppy, lumpy, and dangerous mix. Sunday the 30th, however, is a different beast. A 12 ft WSW swell with a 12-second period and clean cross-off winds. The energy is massive (4430). This is a big, powerful ocean. It’s for experts only, as the size is well over the 8 ft mark. It’s a proper challenge.
The first week of September has a couple of promising days. Monday the 31st has a 5 ft SW swell with a fresh offshore, but it’s a bit workable. The real standout is Tuesday, the 1st of September. The morning brings a 7 ft SW swell with a 14-second period and glassy, off conditions from the east. The energy is strong (1844). This is the best of the second week. It’s clean, powerful, and waist-to-head high. The afternoon is similar at 7 ft with a 13-second period. This is a solid day.
From Wednesday the 2nd of September, the wind turns onshore and messy, killing the quality for the rest of the run. There are a few small windows on the 4th of September with 3 ft swells, but the energy is low. The 16-day window fades out with poor surf on the 5th.
So, the two true standouts? Sunday the 23rd of August for the first big, clean groundswell, and Tuesday the 1st of September for the second, equally clean pulse. Get on those.
Rusty.
