The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Inner Kom over the next couple of weeks.
The first week is a bit of a mixed bag, but the standout window is clear as day. The water temp is sitting at 59°F which is about 1°F cooler than average for this time of year, so pretty normal. Nothing to worry about on that front.
Friday the 17th kicks things off with a morning glass-off. That’s a rare treat. The swell is 6ft from the SW, period 11 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (835). With zero wind, it’s going to be clean and inviting. The afternoon goes a little crossed-up, but still worth a paddle. Saturday and Sunday see the wind turning onshore and the swell dropping, so the quality fades. Monday is small and crossed-up, not really worth getting excited about.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 21st morning has a solid 6ft SSW groundswell, period 14 seconds, and a big jump in energy (1079). The wind is light cross, so it’s not pristine, but the sets will have some punch. Tuesday afternoon is bigger again at 8ft, still SW, still 14 seconds, and energy cranking (2276). That’s the start of the real juice.
But the real standout is Thursday the 23rd afternoon. This is the one. Swell from the SW at 15ft, period 18 seconds, and a massive combined energy of 13241. That’s serious power. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s a little bit of a bump, but the sheer size and long period mean this is a reef and point show. Inner Kom will be handling a lot of water. This is expert territory – over 8ft means it’s not for the faint-hearted. The long period (18 seconds) means the waves will be very straight at the beach, but on the point and reef, they’ll bend and hold shape beautifully. Crowds are sometimes an issue, but on a day like this, most people will be watching from the shore.
Friday the 24th is the other big standout. Morning has 13ft from the SW, period 15 seconds, and strong energy (7291). The wind is light cross-offshore, so the faces will be clean. Afternoon jumps to 16ft, 16 seconds, and 11070 energy. That’s huge. Again, experts only. This is a serious, heavy groundswell. The cross-off wind will keep the lips from wind-slab, making for some proper barrels.
Saturday the 25th is a write-off. The wind is howling offshore at 37 mph – that’s near gale force. The swell is 10ft, but you’ll be fighting to get out and the paddle will be near impossible. Sunday the 26th brings a return to glassy conditions in the morning, still a solid 10ft, 17 seconds, and energy (5330). That’s a beautiful, clean, powerful swell for the experienced crew.
After that, the second week holds some fun, smaller options. Monday the 27th morning is clean with 8ft, Tuesday the 28th afternoon is clean with 6ft, and Wednesday the 29th has clean offshore winds both morning and afternoon with 5ft and 4ft respectively. The energy drops to moderate (910-1041), but it’s clean and rideable. The end of the month sees a big W swell come in, but the wind is onshore and lumpy, so it’s a messy, powerful beast that’s more for the kite crew than the paddle crew.
So, overall: the absolute best on offer is Thursday the 23rd afternoon and Friday the 24th morning and afternoon. Massive, long-period SW groundswell, clean conditions, and lots of energy. Get on it if you’re experienced. The glassy morning on Sunday the 26th is also a gem for the big-wave crowd. The rest is a mix of clean smaller days and windy chaos.
Rusty.
