The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next two weeks are shaping up to be a bit of a rollercoaster at Inner Kom (reef and point). We’ve got some serious swell windows, but the wind and conditions are going to be the deciding factor on whether you score or get skunked.
The standout period is hands down the first real action: Sunday, August 23rd. We’ve got a solid 8ft WSW swell rolling in with a 13-second period, putting a lot of energy into the water (1812). The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze, and the waves are clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but the size is a bit much for beginners. It’s a beautiful morning session, and the crowd factor is only “sometimes,” so you might get a few waves to yourself.
Things get a little dicey through Monday and Tuesday as the wind picks up and the swell gets a bit messy. However, a nice little window opens up on Wednesday, August 26th. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the WSW, but more importantly, we get offshore winds. The period is still a decent 13 seconds, so the wave shape should be good. It’s a much more manageable size for a wider range of surfers, and the energy is moderate (1013). This is a very good option for a clean, fun session.
The real beast is lurking further out. On Wednesday, September 2nd, we’re looking at a huge 15ft WSW swell with a very long 14-second period. The energy is massive (8412). This is exceptional, but it’s for experts only. The morning has light cross-offshore winds, making it clean and powerful. It’s a serious groundswell, so at a reef and point break like Inner Kom, it should hold up well. Just be aware, this is a long-range call, so it’s promising but not a sure thing yet.
There’s a big gap of very poor or marginal conditions between the end of August and the start of September, with strong, onshore winds and blown-out surf. Late on September 6th, there’s a massive 20ft swell, but it’s cross-shore with a chop, making it more of a spectacle than a enjoyable paddle. The energy is through the roof (9321), but the quality is lacking.
The water temperature anomaly is about average for the time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
For the best bet: Lock in Sunday morning, August 23rd for the most reliable, quality, and powerful surf. The Wednesday the 26th is your best bet for a cleaner, more user-friendly session. The big stuff on September 2nd is for the chargers only.
