Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Inner-Kom. It’s a reef and point set-up that is fairly consistent and works best with a swell from the west.
The water’s running at 58°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want to grab an extra millimetre of rubber.
We’re in for a rough start, mate. The first few days are a write-off. From Thursday the 2nd right through to Sunday the 5th, it’s all poor surf with strong cross-onshore winds. The swell is a messy mix, but the wind just destroys any chance of a wave. You’d be better off staying on the beach.
Monday the 6th shows a glimmer. The swell jumps up with a combined energy of 1432 (moderate) and the wind swings lighter. Monday morning sees a 8ft swell from the WSW, period of 11 seconds, but it’s still a bit cross-onshore and choppy. By Monday afternoon, the wind goes onshore but light, with a 6ft W swell (1301 energy). It’s marginal, but there might be a sneaky one if you’re keen.
Now, Tuesday the 7th is where we start talking. The wind turns cross-offshore and light from the SE, and the swell sits at a clean 6ft from the SW with a 12-second period. Combined energy is 1168 (moderate). The conditions are looking clean. This is a good, solid option for the intermediate surfer. Not a standout yet, but promising.
Wednesday the 8th gets serious, but only for the experts. The swell size jumps to 10ft on Wednesday morning and then 12ft by the afternoon, both from the SW. The period stretches to 14-16 seconds. Combined energy is massive – 4908 and 5879 (strong to very strong). The wind is cross-offshore and clean, but at 10ft to 12ft this is well over 8ft and is only for the experienced crew. This is big, powerful groundswell. Because it’s a reef and point break, those long periods (over 15 seconds) will draw up nicely, but at this size, it’s a heavy lineup.
Thursday the 9th is similar but with fresh offshore winds. The swell stays around 10ft from the SW (14 seconds), with energy at 4281. It’s clean, but again, this is expert-only territory due to the size. The offshore wind is strong, so paddling in will be a battle, but the waves will be groomed.
Now, the true standout. Friday the 10th. This is the pick of the entire forecast. The swell drops back to a manageable 6ft in the morning, and then 5ft in the afternoon, both from the SSW. The period hangs in at 13-15 seconds – quality groundswell. The wind goes light offshore from the ESE (6 mph) by the afternoon, which is as good as glassy. The combined energy for the afternoon session is 1630 (moderate). The forecast says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and for me, this is the best on offer. Clean, lined-up waves with that long-period push, and the wind will have it glassed off. It won’t be too crowded based on the ‘sometimes’ crowds note, but get in the water early.
Saturday the 11th remains good. Morning has a 7ft SSW swell (14 seconds) with moderate offshore winds and energy of 1422. The afternoon is a touch bigger at 7ft from the S (13 seconds) but the wind picks up to a fresh offshore. Still clean, but a bit more challenging. This is another good day for the experienced surfer.
After that, the swell fades. Sunday the 12th has smaller 4ft to 3ft waves, and Monday the 13th drops further to under 3ft with cross-onshore winds. Not much to get excited about.
Then from Tuesday the 14th onwards, it’s back to poor surf. Strong winds, onshore, and messy conditions. A gap of several days with no recommendations follows. The swell tries to build again on the 15th and 16th (up to 15ft), but the wind is a nightmare – near gale force and cross-onshore, blowing it to pieces. That’s kite-surfing conditions, not paddle surfing.
To wrap it up: The first 4 days are a bust. Monday the 6th is marginal. The best bet is Friday the 10th, particularly the afternoon, with clean 5ft SSW groundswell and light offshore wind. Saturday the 11th is also solid. The big stuff on the 8th and 9th is for the brave (and the experts) only. Then we fade into a quiet, blown-out second week.
Rusty.
