The Lowdown
Mate, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Inner Kom. This is a reef and point setup, fairly exposed to swell and best with wind from the west. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing too unusual. The first real surf on offer kicks off Wednesday morning, 19th August, with a solid 8.2ft SW swell rolling in at 12 seconds – that’s a nice groundswell with a period over 11 seconds, so it’ll have some punch and shape. The wind is a light cross-off from the south at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The combined energy is strong at 2078, so there’s plenty of power. This is a standout for the experienced surfers – the size is over 8.2ft, so it’s for experts only. The same day afternoon holds similar at 8.2ft, a little cleaner with the same wind, but the tide might be a factor.
Thursday morning, 20th August, is another standout: 11.5ft SW swell at 13 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the south at 6 mph. The energy is very strong at 3587. This is again for experts only, but the conditions are excellent. The wind stays light and cross-off through the morning, making for clean faces. The afternoon sees a drop to 9.8ft, but the wind picks up a bit, so morning is the pick.
Friday, 21st August, the swell drops to 4.9ft and 4.6ft, period around 11 seconds, with moderate cross-off winds. The energy drops to 909 and 774 – moderate now. It’s marginal, but there’s still a wave for the keen. Saturday morning, 22nd, gets messy with cross-onshore wind and only 3.0ft, so forget it. Saturday afternoon, though, the wind goes onshore from the northwest at 6 mph, but the swell bumps back up to 8.2ft SW at 10 seconds – the energy is moderate at 1416, but the onshore wind will mess it up, so it’s a gamble.
Sunday, 23rd August, the swell picks up again: 9.8ft WSW at 13 seconds in the morning, with a light cross-off from the SSE at 6 mph. That’s clean and powerful, with energy at 2679. The afternoon holds at 7.2ft, still clean. This is another top session for the experienced crew. Monday, 24th, sees 5.2ft in the morning at 12 seconds, light cross-off – energy is moderate at 1058, and the conditions are very good. This is a good option for intermediate surfers, as it’s under 8.2ft.
Tuesday, 25th August, the swell is back up to 8.2ft SW at 14 seconds, but the wind is a fresh cross-off from the southeast at 19 mph. That’s a lot of wind – the energy is strong at 2334, but it’ll be bumpy. The period is very long, though, so the wave shape will be good at this reef and point, but paddling into it will be a fight. Wednesday, 26th August, is a gem: 5.6ft WSW at 12 seconds, with glassy conditions – zero wind from the southwest. That’s a morning to remember, clean and fun. The energy is moderate at 972, but the glassy wind makes it a standout for all levels. The afternoon gets onshore, so get out early.
Thursday, 27th, the wind turns cross-onshore and choppy, swell drops to 4.3ft, so it’s a write-off. Friday, 28th, the swell is back to 8.2ft SW at 12 seconds, with a moderate cross-off from the SSE at 12 mph in the morning and gentle in the afternoon. The energy is strong at 2153 and 2475, and the afternoon session is excellent for experienced surfers. Saturday, 29th, gets bigger: 11.5ft to 14.8ft SW swell, with strong winds – the energy is very strong at 4671 and 7427. This is only for the brave, and the wind is strong, so it’s more of a spectacle than a session.
Sunday, 30th August, the wind cranks up to near gale from the southeast at 34 mph, offshore but howling. The swell is 9.8ft SW, but you won’t be paddling into it – it’s a no-go. Monday, 31st, the wind is still strong offshore, tough to get out. The swell drops to 5.2ft and 4.9ft, with a very long period of 16 seconds on the afternoon – that’s a groundswell, but the wind is a factor. Tuesday, 1st September, the wind turns onshore and the swell is 9.8ft to
