The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya with a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks. We've only got one spot on the radar, and it's a bit of a specialist joint, so let's get into it.
We're staring down a long stretch here, with the first proper opportunity not showing up until Sunday the 23rd of August. That's a few days of nothing much to write home about, so be patient. The water's sitting at 58°F which is a bit colder than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you'll want a decent spring suit for the early sessions.
The standout window is undeniably the 23rd of August through to the 1st of September, with a few real gems tucked in there. Boneyards is a reef break, exposed to the west, and it's inconsistent, so it doesn't fire all the time. But when it does, it's got that extra something. The best of the best looks like Sunday the 23rd. We've got a solid 7ft to 8ft swell from the WSW, with a 12 to 13 second period, which is a proper groundswell. That longer period will give the waves some real push and shape, and with a clean, cross-off breeze all day, the lines are going to be holding up beautifully. The combined energy is strong at 1824. This is big, powerful surf – definitely for experienced surfers only. You'll want to be on your game, because the paddle out will be easier between sets, but those waves are packing a punch.
Then, on the 25th of August, things get interesting for a different reason. The swell is 8ft from the SW with a 14 second period, and the combined energy jumps to 2436. But the wind is howling offshore at 22 mph. That'll keep the faces glassy and clean, but it's going to be a battle to get out and stay in position. Only for the strong paddlers out there. The morning of the 1st of September is another cracker to circle – 7ft of SW groundswell, a 14 second period, and a slight offshore breeze with barely a breath of wind. The combined energy is 1844. That's going to be a magical, clean, powerful session.
The 28th of August is also a solid call, with 4ft to 5ft of WSW swell and a lovely 14 second period, plus light offshore winds. The energy is strong at around 1300. The crowds here are "sometimes" a thing, so you might have a few out, but with such a quality window, it's worth the company.
Now, for the second week, things get a bit more mixed. The 30th of August is a big one, but it's a monster. 10ft to 12ft of WSW swell with 12 second period and a cross-off wind. The combined energy is 4430, which is a serious amount of water moving around. That's for die-hard experts only, and even then, it's a serious undertaking. The 1st of September session is the smarter pick. After that, the wind turns ugly from the 2nd of September, with strong cross-onshore winds messing up what could be some decent swell. The 4th of September has a small window of smaller, clean waves at 3ft, but it's a drop in energy compared to what's on offer earlier.
So, to sum it up: if you're an experienced surfer, the 23rd of August and the 1st of September are your absolute best bets. The 28th of August is a fantastic, slightly smaller option. The 25th of August is for the hellman crew. The rest of the time, you're either waiting for the wind to play nice or dealing with surf that's too big and messy. Keep your eyes on the charts, because this setup looks like it's got some real potential.
Rusty.
