The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, we’ve got some solid energy lining up. The main show is Boneyards, a reef break that’s exposed and picks up a good W to SW swell. This isn’t a beginner’s wave – it’s one for the experienced crew. The water is sitting around 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget a good wetsuit.
Tuesday morning (18th August) kicks things off with a clean 7ft WSW swell, period of 12 seconds, and a light cross-off SE breeze. The combined energy is pumping at 1996 (moderate), and the conditions are excellent for an experienced surfer. It’s a bit of a standout to start.
Wednesday morning (19th) is a bit more of a mixed bag, with a marginal tag on the morning, but the afternoon cleans up nicely. You’ve got a solid 8ft SW swell with a 12-second period and a light S breeze. The energy is still high at 1742 (moderate). It’s clean and good for the more skilled.
Thursday morning (20th) is the real standout of the first week. We’re looking at a 12ft SW swell, 13-second period, and a gentle SSE breeze keeping it clean. The combined energy is massive at 3532 (strong). This is a big, powerful wave. It’s excellent for experienced surfers, but at that size, it’s going to be too much for beginners. The crowd factor here is “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it’s worth it.
The swell backs off a bit into Friday, still offering some 7ft waves, but the quality drops. Saturday morning (22nd) is a write-off with rain and onshore wind, so stay out of the water. The afternoon brings a big 12ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-on, so the surface gets a bit lumpy. It’s a bit of a kitesurfing setup if you’re into that.
Sunday morning (23rd) is a return to form with a clean 10ft WSW swell, 12-second period, and a light SSE cross-off breeze. The energy is 2656 (strong). Another excellent session for the experienced.
The surf drops off a bit for the start of the next week, with smaller 5ft to 4ft waves on Monday (24th). Tuesday morning (25th) sees a jump back to 8ft SW swell with a longer 14-second period, but the wind is a stiff 25 km/h cross-off, making it a bit of a challenge. The energy is 2405 (strong), but it’s a marginal call.
Now, look toward Wednesday morning (26th). This is a gem. The swell is 6ft from the WSW, period of 12 seconds, and the wind is glassy – a 5 km/h NE breeze. It’s glassy, clean, and the energy is 1135 (moderate). For a mid-week pulse, this is one of the best on offer. It’s a smaller window, but if you can get out, it’s a beautiful session.
The energy picks up again for the 28th (Friday) with a solid 10ft WSW groundswell at 14 seconds, but the wind is a strong 40-45 km/h cross-off. It’s big and powerful, but the wind makes it a real battle. Experienced only.
The big one to note is Sunday morning, 30th August. We’ve got a 8ft SW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is massive at 5157 (very strong). The wind is a light cross-on from the north, so the surface isn’t glassy, but it’s manageable. This is a very promising, long-range standout. That long period makes it a proper groundswell, perfect for this reef break, but it can make a beach break a bit too straight. This is late in the forecast, so it’s a bit less certain, but if it holds, it’s a cracker.
The final days of the forecast (31st onward) get messy with strong onshore winds and big, lumpy surf. Not worth the paddle.
Summary: Thursday morning (20th) is the standout of the first week. Wednesday morning (26th) is the clean, glassy gem. And Sunday the 30th is the promising long-range pulse. Don’t sleep on that one.
Rusty.
