The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s brewing for Boneyards over the next couple of weeks.
We start off right away on Wednesday the 15th of July with a decent push. There’s a solid 10ft SW groundswell rolling in with a long 16-second period, packing a solid punch – wave energy is high (4295). Boneyards is a reef break, and this long-period SW groundswell is exactly what it’s built for, offering nice shaped lines. The catch? It’s a little inconsistent by nature, and the wind is a light cross-shore at 3 mph, which will keep things a bit bumpy, but it’s still surfable. This one is better left to intermediate surfers.
Now, the real standout is Thursday the 16th of July, morning session. The swell drops slightly to 8ft but it’s still a strong SW groundswell with 13 seconds between peaks. Energy is still solid (2494). The big news is the wind: glassy, dead calm at 0 mph. Boneyards will be absolutely clean, with those long-period lines reeling down the reef. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about normal for this time of year. This is the best window in the whole run – clear conditions and a decent-sized, powerful swell. It’s a bit much for beginners, but for experienced surfers, this is prime.
The afternoon on Thursday gets a bit bumpy again with a light cross-shore, but still fun. Friday the 17th cleans up nicely – morning brings ESE offshore winds at 6 mph, with 6ft SW swell and 11-second period. The evening goes glassy. These are clean, fun days and easier to handle than the big Thursday morning sets.
Saturday the 18th goes a bit ugly – strong cross-onshore winds from the NNW at 12 mph chop things up. Not recommended.
Sunday the 19th looks solid again. Morning has 6ft SW swell with a 12-second period and clean cross-offshore winds. Energy is moderate (1068). Then the afternoon glass-off looks inviting for smaller waves.
After Sunday, things get tricky. Monday the 20th turns onshore and messy. Then Tuesday the 21st, a massive 12ft SW swell at 14 seconds hits, but it’s accompanied by a near-gale cross-onshore wind at 31 mph. The break will be blown out and dangerous – this is more of a kite-surfing setup than paddle surfing. Energy is massive (5453). Avoid it for normal surfing.
Wednesday the 22nd is all about size – a huge 16ft to 20ft SW swell. This is simply too big for Boneyards. Unless you’re a tow-in expert, stay out of the water.
The rest of the run into late July is a mixed bag of solid SW swells (8ft to 12ft), often with onshore or cross-onshore winds. There are some promising mornings on the 29th and 30th with offshore winds and solid 8ft to 10ft SW swell, but by then the window is far out and less certain.
Bottom line: Your best bet is Thursday morning the 16th of July. It’s the true standout. After that, Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th mornings are next best. Bigger swells later in the month are mostly for experienced surfers only, and the wind often ruins it.
Stay stoked.
