The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Boneyards over the next couple of weeks.
First things first, the water temp is sitting at 60°, and it's a touch below average for the time of year. Not unusual, just normal winter water.
We start with a bit of a flat patch. The first few days are pretty grim. On Tuesday the 14th, you're lookin' at a tiny 3 ft W swell, but with a cross-on breeze and a pretty weak energy reading. It's poor, and the score says it all – not worth paddlin' out.
Wednesday the 15th sees the swell kick up a notch, but it's messy. Morning brings a 5 ft SW swell with a super long 17-second period. That's a proper groundswell, and with a cross-on breeze, it's tricky. The afternoon jumps to a 10 ft SW swell, but it's cross-shore. The energy is strong, but the conditions are marginal. The swell period is 16 seconds, that long-period stuff, so it might refract around and give some shape.
Now, Thursday the 16th is a standout window for experienced surfers. The morning is glassy – zero wind – with an 8 ft SW swell and a 13-second period. That's clean, powerful, and the energy is high. This is the one to target if you've got the chops; that swell direction is spot on from the optimum for Boneyards. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy with the cross-shore wind picking up.
Friday the 17th through Monday the 20th is a mixed bag. We get a consistent run of 6 ft to 8 ft SW/SSW swells, with clean conditions from cross-off winds, but the energy is moderate. Not bad, not great. It's a consistent block of rideable surf, but nothing that'll blow your mind.
Then we hit another glassy moment. Tuesday the 21st, mornin' session looks prime again: flat calm, an 8 ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, and strong energy. For experienced surfers, that's a clean, powerful day. The afternoon sees a bigger 10 ft swell but the cross-onshore wind spoils it a bit.
Watch out for Wednesday the 22nd – it's a write-off. Fresh breeze from the NNW at 18 mph, turnin' that 13 ft SW swell into a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. Energy is huge but the wind makes it unrideable. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite-surfing than paddle-surfing.
Thursday the 23rd cleans up a bit with offshore winds, but the swell is a little smaller at 7 ft to 8 ft WSW, and the wind is fresh (around 20 mph). It's doable for the dedicated, but not ideal.
Now, hold onto your board. Friday the 24th is the absolute standout of the whole period. Mornin' is glassy, with a massive 16 ft WSW swell, 13-second period, and a colossal energy reading. This is "exceptional for expert surfers" territory. It's a big, powerful groundswell, and with no wind, it could be the session of the season for those who can handle it. The afternoon calms down a bit but is still an exceptional 15 ft with clean cross-off winds.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th keeps the energy high with clean conditions and solid 7 ft to 10 ft SW/WSW swells, good for experienced surfers. The long-range stuff into the following week (starting 27th July) shows a drying-up of conditions as the wind turns onshore again, and the swell gets a bit unruly, but keep an eye on Tuesday the 28th afternoon for another clean, powerful window with an 11 ft SW swell.
So, to boil it down: Thursday 16th morning and Tuesday 21st morning are your best bets for clean, powerful, mid-sized surf. But the real prize is Friday 24th – that glassy, 16 ft day is a once-in-a-while event for experts only.
Rusty.
