Right, settle in, let’s talk Boneyards. This is a reef set-up, takes a decent lick of swell, but it’s not one of those breaks you can just rock up to any old time. It’s inconsistent, so when it’s on, it’s special, but you’ve gotta pick your moment.
Right now, we’ve got a fair gap before anything worth paddling out for. The next few days are messy. Monday the 6th of July has some size, around 6ft to 8ft from the W and SW, but the wind is all wrong—cross and cross-on with a bit of bump. The combined energy is there (1331 to 2060), but it’s just not clean. It’s one of those where you’d be fighting more than surfing.
There’s a little flicker of hope late Wednesday afternoon the 8th. Wind swings cross-off with a moderate breeze, cleaning things up on that 8ft SW swell (13-second period, solid energy of 3001). It’s not a standout, but it’s rideable. Thursday through Saturday morning though? That’s where we get some teeth. Swell builds to 8ft to 10ft from the SSW, with a long 13-14 second period. The combined energy is properly pumping—up to 3380 on Thursday morning. But here’s the thing: the wind is howling. Fresh breezes from the SE and ESE, even if offshore, are strong. That’s expert territory, and only if you’ve got the skills for a big, powerful reef with a lot of moving water.
The true standout window opens on Saturday morning, July 11th. Swell drops back to a still-chunky 6ft from the SSW, but the wind goes gentle offshore from the SE. Combined energy is a moderate 1065, but the quality is there—excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That’s your best bet of the first week. Clean, offshore, real power in the water.
Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are still good, with dropping swell (4ft to 4ft) and light winds, even going glassy on Monday afternoon. The energy is low (380-524), so it’s a fun, mellow reef session, not a headline act.
Then we hit a nasty wall. Tuesday the 14th through to Wednesday the 15th is a write-off. Strong cross-on winds, lumpy, messy, and then a sudden jump to 12ft on the 15th with brutal cross-chop. Energy spikes to 4458, but it’s just ugly. Leave it.
Hold on though. Thursday morning, July 16th. This is the one. The wind goes glassy, dead calm. Swell is a solid 12ft from the SW, long 14-second period, and the combined energy is massive at 5227. The forecast calls it exceptional for expert surfers, and I’d agree—that’s a serious, powerful, clean reef wave. If you’re an experienced local and you know the lineup, that is as good as it gets. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off, so there’s a window there too. This is the week’s true standout.
After that, it drops off. Friday the 17th has cross-on wind again, ruining a 7ft SW swell. Saturday the 18th stays clean-ish with cross-off winds, but the size is still decent at 8ft to 8ft. Then Sunday the 19th has a lovely clean 5ft to 5ft SW swell with light offshore winds—another excellent day for experienced surfers. That’s your second standout, a much more manageable session.
Monday the 20th is blown out again. And then, right at the end of the outlook, Tuesday the 21st of July? Glassy conditions again, with an 8ft SW swell and a very long 15-second period. Energy is high at 3171. That’s a serious, late-in-the-game promise for the experienced crew.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a mess until Saturday morning the 11th. The absolute standout, the one to circle, is Thursday the 16th of July—glassy, big, and powerful. Sunday the 19th and Tuesday the 21st are the other two top-tier calls. Crowds at Boneyards are *sometimes* an issue, so for those glassy windows, expect some company.
Stay safe out there.
