The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a good look at what’s coming down the pipe for Boneyards.
Alright, we’ve got a window of surf coming up, but this spot is a bit of a tease. Boneyards is a reef break, and it can be a bit inconsistent, so don’t just rock up expecting a perfect wave every time. It’s an intermediate wave, but when it’s on, it’s on. The water temps are a bit nippy, running about 57°, which is a little colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the rubber.
Wednesday morning the 19th kicks it off with a solid 8 ft SW groundswell, period at 12 seconds. That’s got some grunt. The combined energy is a thumping 2078 (moderate). It’s clean with a cross-off breeze, not glassy but workable. Wednesday afternoon drops a touch to 8 ft as well, but with lighter winds, making for some excellent conditions for those who know what they’re doing. Thursday the 20th is the real standout to start. Morning has 12 ft SW swell, 13-second period, and the energy hits 3587 (strong). That’s big, powerful water. It’s clean with a light breeze. Honestly, that morning is the pick of the first week, but that’s for experts only – it’s too big for beginners.
Friday eases back a bit to 6 ft from the SW, period 11 seconds. The morning has a nice offshore wind, so it’s clean. Energy is 882 (moderate). A good day for the intermediates to get amongst it, but it’s not the size of Thursday. Saturday the 22nd looks like a write-off with onshore winds and rain showers – that's a no-go.
Sunday the 23rd, we’re back in the game. Morning has 8 ft WSW swell, 13-second period, energy at 2626 (strong). Nice clean conditions again. This is another one for the experienced crew. Monday the 24th is smaller, around 5 ft, still clean, alright for a cruise. Tuesday the 25th finds some quality with 7 ft swell and offshore winds both sessions. That’s worth a paddle.
After a bit of a down week, we get a *proper* long-range standout. Look at Monday the 31st. Morning session has a 10 ft SW groundswell with a *very* long period of 15 seconds. That is a proper groundswell, giving it heaps of push. Energy is a huge 3967 (strong). And there’s a gentle offshore breeze making it clean. This is the kind of day you clear your schedule for, though it's big enough that only experts should be out there. The following day, Tuesday the 1st of September, *also* looks prime. Morning has 6 ft from the WSW with glassy conditions. Glassy! That’s a major positive, the waves will be perfect. A beautiful day for a surfer.
Right at the end of the run, we see the swell blowing up. Thursday the 3rd of September has a massive 18 ft SW swell in the morning, with a colossal energy reading of 17992 (very strong). But honestly, that’s just too big for Boneyards, even with clean conditions. It’s a reef, and that much water will be a washing machine. It might look more interesting for the kite crew than paddle surfers.
So, to sum it up: The two real standouts are Thursday morning the 20th for the power and Monday morning the 31st for the pure groundswell quality. The Tuesday the 1st glass-off is a sneaky perfect day, too. The rest is a mixed bag of clean but average waves, with some days ruined by wind. Keep an eye on that second week – it looks promising.
