The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've got the lowdown on the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a bit of a slow start, but the long-range forecast has some serious potential if you can wait it out. The first solid surf we see is on Thursday the 16th of July at Boneyards, a reef break that's a bit inconsistent. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, but nothing too crazy.
Thursday afternoon kicks things off with a 8ft SW swell, but it's got a cross-on breeze from the SW, so the surface won't be perfect. The combined energy is moderate (1645). The real standout early on is Friday morning, July 17th. The wind drops to nothing, absolutely glassy, with a 6ft SW swell. That's going to be clean as a whistle. The swell energy is a bit weaker (835), but for a morning surf, you can't beat those conditions. Just keep in mind the swell is over 5ft, so it might be a bit much for beginners.
Friday afternoon and into Saturday the 18th, we see the swell and wind start to mess with the quality. Saturday morning has a 5ft SW swell with an offshore wind, which is promising, but the overall quality is still a bit marginal. The weekend gets a bit lumpy and messy, with the swell picking up to 6ft and 6ft on Sunday, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and not ideal.
Monday the 20th of July offers another glassy morning, but the swell has dropped to 5ft and the energy is weaker (701). It's a good call for a quick session, but not a standout.
Now, hold onto your leash. From Tuesday the 21st of July, things get serious. The swell pumps up, but the wind is against us. Tuesday afternoon has a 8ft SW swell, but a moderate cross-onshore breeze makes it a write-off. Wednesday the 22nd of July is a full-on beast, with a 15ft WSW swell, but that's combined with a fresh cross-onshore wind. That's experts-only territory, and even then it's going to be a lumpy, messy mess. The combined energy is massive (6795), but it's not for paddling. If you're into kite surfing, this setup looks way more interesting.
The real prize comes from Thursday the 24th of July onwards. Friday the 24th of July morning is the first true standout. We've got a 12ft SW swell with a 15-second period, and a clean cross-off wind from the SE. The combined energy is huge (5020), and it's clean. This is exceptional surf for expert surfers. Then Saturday the 25th of July morning is the absolute cream of the crop. A 13ft SW swell, period of 16 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze. The energy is off the charts at 7147. This is a big, powerful, clean swell. It's big – over 8ft – so it's definitely for experienced heads only. It's going to be a long wait between sets, but the waves will be worth it.
The following week, from the 27th of July, the swell drops a bit but stays solid. Monday the 27th of July morning has a 7ft SW swell with a fresh offshore wind, so it's clean. Tuesday the 28th of July is another beauty, with a 8ft WSW swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon. The period is a very long 15 seconds, so it's a proper groundswell. That makes it perfect for the reef at Boneyards, but it might break a bit too straight at a beach break.
The last few days of July and into August look like they're fading out, with the wind turning onshore again and the swell dropping off. If you can wait, the 24th and 25th of July are the ones to circle. They're a week and a half out, so don't lock in your plans yet, but keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
