The Lowdown
Righto, let’s get into it.
The only option on the table for the next couple of weeks is Boneyards. It’s an exposed reef break that picks up swell from the west, and it’s a spot that doesn’t break all that often, so when it does, you pay attention.
Kicking off Sunday the 23rd, we’ve got a solid 8 ft of groundswell from the west-southwest with a long 13-second period. Combined energy is pumping at 1812, so there’s plenty of push. Winds are light cross-off from the south-southeast, and the early morning session looks clean and excellent for experienced surfers. This is one of the genuine standouts in the window: head-high plus sets, nice line, and an intermediate vibe but the size and power mean it’s not for the groms. Crowds are possible here sometimes.
Sunday afternoon stays clean but the period drops a little to 12 seconds, and the energy is still strong at 1631, though the score is a notch down. Monday the 24th sees the swell drop to 6 ft with moderate cross-off winds, and the energy weakens to 903. Still surfable but not the pick.
Tuesday the 25th gets a bit wild – 8 ft from the southwest with a very long 14-second period, but the wind cranks up to 31 mph from the southeast by the afternoon. Combined energy hits 2487, but it’s messy and cross-off, poor conditions. Not worth it.
Now, Wednesday the 26th morning – offshore wind from the east-southeast at 12 mph, 4 ft of west-southwest swell with a 13-second period, energy at 1013. Clean, moderate offshore, and the surf is excellent for experienced surfers. Another good one.
Friday the 28th is where we get a absolute beauty. Morning has a light offshore from the east-southeast, only 4 ft of south swell but a 14-second period on the afternoon with glassy conditions and energy at 1036. The afternoon is glassy, clean, and the swell shifts back to west-southwest. That afternoon session is the best of the early stretch – light winds, glassy face, and long-period line-up waves.
There’s a bit of a lull Thursday 27th and Saturday 29th with poor winds and onshore crud, so you’ll be sitting those out.
Sunday the 30th brings another pulse: 8 ft from the west-southwest, but the period is only 9 seconds – that’s a shorter period windswell feel, but it’s clean in the morning with light cross-off winds. Energy at 1487. Decent, but not as refined.
Now, we gotta talk about Wednesday the 2nd of September. That morning, the combined energy is a massive 8412 – 15 ft of west-southwest swell with a 14-second period, light cross-off winds. That’s exceptional, expert-only territory. The afternoon stays clean with offshore wind and 13 ft, 14 seconds, energy at 7132. That is the undisputed standout of the whole forecast, but it’s for experienced chargers only. If you’re a punter, stay on the beach.
Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th are blown out or onshore – gale force winds, rain, and messy big surf. Avoid.
But then Saturday the 5th morning – strong offshore from the east-southeast at 25 mph, 13 ft from the southwest, 14-second period, energy at 6083. That’s clean but extremely hard to paddle into, and the wind is strong enough to make it a battle just to get out. That’s expert-kite-surfing territory, not so much a paddle session.
The last part of the window, Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th, drops back to 7 ft to 15 ft with cross-shore or onshore winds, and the energy is still very high, over 9000 on Monday, but it’s not clean.
So bottom line: Sunday 23rd morning and Friday 28th afternoon are the two real standouts for the average experienced surfer. The big one on Wednesday 2nd of September is for the elite only.
