Table - best surf conditions forecast for Boneyards over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at this forecast for Boneyards. It’s a reef setup, exposed to the west swell, and it’s got a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde thing going on over the next 16 days. The water temp is sitting at 60.6°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no drama there.
The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ll get into it. The surf picks up from Thursday the 9th, but it’s not great. On Thursday morning, we’ve got a 9.8ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period, giving us a solid 3220 of combined energy. That’s strong, but the wind is a 18.6 mph cross-off from the SE, which keeps it clean but not perfect. The afternoon drops to 8.2ft with a 13-second period and 2422 energy, but the tide and conditions are questionable. Nothing to jump for.
Friday the 10th sees the swell hold around 8.2ft from the SSW, with a 13-second period, and the wind goes offshore from the SE, around 18.6–21.7 mph. That’s a fresh offshore breeze, so the lines will be clean, but the energy is dropping from 2350 to 1887. Still, it’s better than Thursday. Saturday the 11th is where things start to cook. The morning swell is 6.9ft from the SSW, 12-second period, and 1399 energy, with a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE at 15.5 mph. The report says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and I’d agree—this is a standout. The afternoon drops to 5.6ft and 1063 energy, but still clean and offshore. If you’re an intermediate to advanced surfer, Saturday morning is your pick.
Sunday the 12th is still surfable, with 4.3ft from the SSW, 11-second period, and 533 energy, and a light offshore wind from the E at 6.2 mph. Clean, but the energy is fading. By Monday the 13th, we’re down to 2.6ft and 180 energy, with glassy conditions from the NE at 3.1 mph in the morning. It’s small, but glassy is glassy. The afternoon goes flat with a 2.3ft cross-shore wind. That’s a gap of small, weak surf.
Tuesday the 14th brings a new pulse: 3.3ft from the W with a 10-second period and 276 energy, and glassy conditions in the morning from the NW. That’s pretty, but small. Wednesday the 15th has a tricky one: morning offers 3.0ft from the SW with a long 15-second period, giving 746 energy, but it’s a light cross-onshore wind. The afternoon jumps to 6.6ft from the WSW with a 16-second period and 2083 energy, but the wind is onshore. That long period will make the reef work, but the wind is messy.
Thursday the 16th is a bit of a letdown. The swell is 8.2ft from the WSW with a 14-second period and 2866 energy, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy in the morning, and onshore in the afternoon. It’s a lot of energy but messy. Friday the 17th is a write-off with 24.9–28 mph cross-off winds, though the swell is 5.6ft to 4.9ft. The wind is too strong for good surfing.
Saturday the 18th has a 5.9ft to 7.5ft swell from the NNW and NW, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s windswell. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 21.7 mph, so it’ll be clean, but the short period means it’ll be fat and weak. The energy is 396 to 578. Not great.
Now, for the real standout: Sunday the 19th. The swell jumps to 11.5ft from the W with a 13-second period and a massive 4274 to 4884 energy. The wind is a fresh offshore from the ESE at 18.6–21.7 mph. That’s clean, big, and powerful. This is for experts only—11.5ft is too big for beginners. The reef should handle it well, and the long period will make for some proper groundswell. The direction (W) matches the optimum (W
