Table - best surf conditions forecast for Boneyards over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the next couple of weeks for the region.
We've got a real slow start at Boneyards (reef). The first couple of days are a write-off if you're looking for anything decent. The sea is building but the winds are nasty – strong cross-off and onshore flow all day Wednesday and Thursday ripping into what should be a good groundswell. That 10ft SW on Thursday morning is a cruel tease with 22 mph winds shredding it. You’d be mad to paddle out.
The first real window where it gets interesting is the early hours of Friday, 10 July. The wind finally clocks around to a light offshore, and we've got a solid 8ft swell out of the SSW, swinging a bit more south than Wednesday. The period is a nice long 13 seconds, so the waves will have some punch and shape, but that’s big enough for intermediate surfers only. The combined energy is very strong, sitting at 2302 – you’ll feel that power pushing through. Morning glass will be the peak, as the wind stays offshore but picks up to a fresh breeze through the afternoon, staying clean. The water temperature is sitting at 60°, which is pretty much dead average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The real stand-out window at Boneyards is the morning of Saturday, 12 July. It drops a little in size to a still-chunky 6ft from the SSW, but the wind glassed right off to nothing early. That combined energy is still moderate at 1160, but with 12-second period and a glassy surface, you’ll get clean, walling reef waves. This is the best pick in the first week. Crowds are possible here, so get there early.
After that, the surf tails right off. Sunday, 12 July morning offers a much smaller 4ft SSW swell, but the wind is light offshore and conditions are clean. After that, the whole week from Monday the 13th through to Thursday the 16th is a mix of tiny waves or completely blown-out, stormy junk. We go through a couple of days with nothing over 3ft, and a lot of onshore wind. That’s a solid four or five day gap of poor-to-rubbish conditions.
Then, around Friday, 17 July, a new, serious SW groundswell rolls in. The 10ft swell arrives with glassy conditions in the morning. This one is for experts only – anything over 8ft on a reef is no joke. The period is 12 seconds, a proper groundswell, and the combined energy is a serious 2785. Saturday morning the 18th holds at 8ft but the wind swings onshore, so Friday is the pinpoint. That's the second highlight, and it's over a week out – so keep an eye on the forecast, but it's a promising long-range call.
The real monster window shows up on the morning of Wednesday, 22 July. A huge 12ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period and clean, light offshore wind from the ESE. The combined wave energy is a massive 4464 – that’s a serious paddle and not for the faint-hearted. This is a highlight for big-wave chargers only. The offshore wind will hold it open, but you'll need to be a strong paddler. After that, the winds turn strong offshore again on Thursday the 23rd, making paddling into a 7ft SSW swell very difficult, so that window is more about wind than waves.
In short, Boneyards has two solid stand-out sessions: the clean, glassy Saturday morning on 12 July for solid intermediate conditions, and the big, clean Friday morning on 17 July for the experts. The rest is a mixed bag with a long flat spell in the middle.
Rusty.
