The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The long-range picture for Boneyards is a mixed bag, but there’s definitely some firepower on the horizon if you’re willing to be patient. This is a reef setup that needs the right conditions to really shine, and it’s looking like a tale of two weeks.
We kick things off with a solid pulse of swell. Wednesday morning sees a 8ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the energy reading is a strong 2078. It’s clean with that cross-off breeze, and while it's not perfect, it’s surfable for sure. The afternoon drops a touch in energy to 1742, but it’s still clean and pushing 8ft. This is a good start, but the real standout of the first few days is Thursday morning. That’s when the swell jumps to 12ft from the SW with a 13-second period, and the energy meter is cranking at 3587. It’s still clean with light winds, and this is the pick of the first part of the week for anyone with the skills to handle it. This is proper, powerful reef surf.
After that, things back off a bit. Friday sees the swell drop to 5ft and the energy levels fall to 909. It’s clean, but it’s on the way out. Saturday morning is a write-off with poor winds, but Saturday afternoon shows a rebound with a 8ft SW swell and a period of 10 seconds. The wind swings offshore, so consider that a window.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday through Monday morning there’s another run of clean, cross-off conditions with waves in the 5ft to 10ft range. The energy is moderate, in the 1000-2600 range. It’s consistent and surfable. But Tuesday, the 25th and 26th, the wind picks up strong from the SE, making things tricky despite the 8ft swell. Keep an eye on Wednesday the 26th though. The forecast shows a glassy morning with a 6ft WSW swell. It’s not huge, but glassy conditions at a reef are always a treat. That would be a fun, clean session.
Then we hit a lull. From the 27th into the 1st of September, it’s pretty messy with onshore winds and poor conditions. Not much to get excited about, a real flat and choppy spell. There’s a little bump on the 28th, but the wind is up.
Now for the long-range stuff, and this is where it gets serious. The 29th of August shows a building swell – 12ft on Saturday morning, jumping to a massive 15ft by the afternoon. The energy is off the charts, hitting 7427. The wind is strong, but it’s cross-off, so it might be clean enough for the brave. That’s a serious, heavy day at Boneyards, definitely expert territory. And it doesn’t stop there. The 3rd of September is showing a monster. A 20ft SW swell with a 14-second period and energy readings in the high 13,000s. That’s a massive groundswell. The issue is the wind is onshore at that point. If the wind ever plays ball that day, it will be a session for the ages, but as it stands, it could be a washing machine. It’s far out, so treat it as a promising but uncertain beast.
The water temp is about average for the time of year at the start of this forecast, so nothing crazy there. Just your typical conditions. All in all, Thursday the 20th looks like the cleanest, most powerful surf of the first week, and that late August swell is the one to watch for the big dogs a week from now.
