The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Boneyards.
First thing you need to know: the water is sitting at 58°, which is about 2° cooler than normal for this time of year. That’s not a huge deal, just a touch on the fresh side, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.
The forecast opens up with a bit of a slow start. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th have some swell but the winds are messy and the conditions are just marginal. Not worth getting too excited about. The wait is on.
Sunday the 19th afternoon is where things start to look up. We’ve got a clean 6 ft SW swell rolling in with a light cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is moderate (769), and the period is a solid 11 seconds, so those waves will have some shape. This is a good sign for an inconsistent reef break like Boneyards – when it’s on, it’s on. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind.
Monday the 20th morning is a real standout. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, with a 5 ft SSW swell. It’s clean, it’s tidy, and the water will be like a mirror. The combined energy is moderate (582). This is the kind of morning you set the alarm for. The swell is a bit short in period (9 seconds), so it won’t have the grunt of a groundswell, but the glassy conditions make up for it.
Tuesday the 21st morning is another beauty. Glassy again, with a 5 ft SSW swell and a long period of 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is moderate to strong (915). This will produce some lovely, lined-up waves. The long period means it might be a bit too straight for a beach break, but Boneyards is a reef, so it should handle it well. The paddling will be easier between sets.
Now, Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd get blown out. Strong winds, lumpy, and messy. Avoid. The swell gets bigger, but it’s not worth it.
Friday the 24th morning is a serious one. This is for experts only. We’re looking at an 12 ft SW swell with a 15-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 5036 (strong). The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the waves will be clean. But at this size, it’s a beast. Boneyards can handle it, but you need to know what you’re doing. The afternoon pushes to 13 ft, still with a 15-second period, but the wind picks up. Still, the morning window is the standout for the whole forecast if you’ve got the nerve.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is a write-off. Strong to gale-force winds, even though they’re offshore, the paddling will be a nightmare. The swell is still there, but it’s not for paddling.
Then we get a nice run from Monday the 27th morning through to Tuesday the 28th afternoon. Clean, 5 ft to 6 ft SW and SSW swells, with long periods (13-16 seconds). The combined energy is strong (around 1500-2200). These are excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The wind is light and cross-offshore or offshore. This is a solid run of quality waves.
After that, from Wednesday the 29th onwards, it fades. The swell drops, the winds go back onshore, and the conditions deteriorate. By August 1st, it’s small and choppy.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are Monday the 20th morning for the glassy conditions, and Friday the 24th morning for the big, clean, expert-level swell. Tuesday the 21st morning is also a cracker. The rest of the time is either waiting, blown out, or too small.
Rusty.
