The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but don’t let that fool you. The first real chance to get wet comes on Friday, July 17th, at Boneyards. This is a reef break, and it’s not the kind of spot that fires every day—it’s inconsistent, so you’ve got to pick your moments. Friday morning, it’s looking proper. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual there. We’ve got a solid 6ft groundswell rolling in from the SW, with a long period of 11 seconds, and the combined swell energy is chunky at 835. The wind is dead glass, absolutely nothing. That’s the kind of start you dream of. The waves will have some real push to them, but being a reef, it’ll handle that long-period energy well. It’s a bit on the bigger side, so maybe not one for the beginners, but for the intermediates, it’s a cracker. Keep in mind, it can get a few people out there, so don’t expect to have it all to yourself.
The afternoon sees a light breeze swing in, turning it to a bit of a cross-on, and the quality drops off. Saturday and Sunday are a mixed bag with cross-on winds and choppy conditions, so it’s not really worth the paddle.
Now, hold on to your board, because the real standout is shaping up for Friday, July 24th. That morning, Boneyards is going to be absolutely pumping. We’re talking a massive 15ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy reading is a staggering 9418, which is massive. The wind is a clean cross-off from the SE, and it’s going to be clean. This is for expert surfers only—anything over 8ft is serious business, and this is well into that territory. The waves will be big, powerful, and with that very long period, they’ll be lining up beautifully on the reef. The afternoon is still huge at 13ft, but the wind picks up a bit, so the morning is the clear winner. This is the one to circle on the calendar, but remember, it’s a week and a bit away, so forecasts can shift.
The weekend after that, July 26th, has some solid swell but the wind becomes a real issue. Sunday morning has a strong offshore but it’s blowing so hard (25 mph) that paddling out will be a battle. The afternoon is still windy but a bit more manageable. Come Monday, July 27th, it settles right down. The morning is glassy again with a clean 5ft groundswell from the SW on a 13-second period. The energy is moderate at 683, and it’ll be a lovely, clean session for a steady intermediate.
The very end of the run, on Saturday, August 1st, throws up another interesting one. The morning is glassy, with a 5ft SSW groundswell and a 14-second period. The wind is dead calm. The combined energy jumps to 1104, so it’s got some grunt. The afternoon is even more curious—a 5ft swell from the west with a massive 21-second period. That’s a very long period, and it’s going to produce some incredibly long, walled-up waves. For a reef like Boneyards, that could be something special. The energy reading is 2810, which is strong. It’s a promising long-range call, but treat it as a nice ‘maybe’ for now.
Overall, you’ve got a few good windows, but the big dog is the 24th of July. Get on it if you’ve got the skills.
