The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a wait before anything really gets going. The first swell we see is on Sunday afternoon, the 23rd of August, at Boneyards. It’s a tricky start. The water temp is sitting at 57.9°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget the booties.
Sunday afternoon sees a 7.5ft swell from the WSW, with a 12-second period and a solid 1631 combined energy. Sounds alright on paper, but the wind is a cross-off from the SSE at 9 mph, and the call is marginal surf with questionable tide. It’s surfable, but it’s not the one to get excited about.
Monday the 24th is more of the same, with a smaller 5.9ft swell dropping off in the morning and a stronger 16 mph cross-off wind. The energy drops to 950, and the score is a bit flat. Still, it’s clean.
Tuesday the 25th really ramps up. The swell jumps to 7.9ft from the SW, with a 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits 2549, and the wave comment says it’s clean. But here’s the catch: that 7.9ft is getting into the territory that’s a bit too big for beginners. On top of that, the wind is a cross-off from the SE at 22 mph, which is a fresh breeze. It’s going to be lumpy and challenging. Afternoon is similar, 7.2ft with a 14-second period. The energy is 2130, but the wind picks up to 28 mph. This is a day for experienced surfers only, and even then, it’s going to be a handful.
Now, here’s the standout of the first week. Wednesday the 26th. The morning brings a 4.6ft swell from the WSW, 13-second period, and 1062 combined energy. The wind shifts to a true offshore from the ESE at 19 mph. That’s a beautiful setup. The call is for fresh offshore and clean conditions. But the real magic happens in the afternoon. The swell settles to 3.9ft, period stays at 12 seconds, and the wind drops to a gentle 12 mph offshore. The energy is 1012, and the report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the session to circle. Glassy, clean, and a proper reef break handling that long-period swell beautifully. Crowds are sometimes an issue at Boneyards, so get in early.
Thursday the 27th goes pear-shaped. A cross-on wind from the NNW and a messy, poor surf call. Friday the 28th is a recovery day. A 4.3ft to 3.9ft swell from the SSW and WSW, with a 14-second period, and the wind is offshore again from the SE. It’s clean, but the energy is moderate (661 to 801). It’s a good, mellow day.
Saturday the 29th is a write-off. Strong cross-on winds and lumpy waves. Then Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st see a major swell from the west, with heights hitting 9.8ft to 11.5ft. The combined energy is massive (2907 to 3877), but the wind is onshore or cross-on, and the conditions are poor. That’s not a surf day; that’s a day to watch from the cliffs.
The first week of September is a mixed bag. Tuesday the 1st is still poor with cross-on winds and a lumpy 6.9ft to 8.2ft swell. Then we hit a big event on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning sees a 14.8ft swell from the west, with a 12-second period and a ridiculous 8785 combined energy. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, creating a cross-chop. The report flags it as marginal, but the score is a 7. This is a serious, powerful swell. It’s not for the faint of heart. The afternoon gets blown out by a near gale, so the morning is the only window for experts.
Thursday the 3rd of September is even bigger. A 16.4ft swell from the WSW, 13-second period, and an incredible 18086 combined energy. The wind is a strong cross-on, and the report says it’s wind and tide favorable, but the swell is simply too big for this break. For the experts, the morning is a window, but it’s a massive, dangerous, messy beast. Afternoon is a 13.1ft, and it’s still messy.
The rest of the outlook fades out. Friday the 4th is choppy and poor. Saturday the 5th sees another big 16.4ft swell from the SW with a 15-second period, and a massive
