The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. The next couple of days are a write-off at Fish Hoek – tiny, weak swell and poor conditions mean you’re better off doing something else. But hold on, because Wednesday the 15th is where things start to get seriously interesting.
We’ve got a solid pulse of long-period groundswell coming in from the SW on Wednesday morning. The swell is a clean 3ft, with a period of 17 seconds, and combined energy is a moderate 672. The wind is a light cross-off from the NW, so it’ll be clean. Then Wednesday afternoon, it jumps up to 6ft from the SW, with a 16-second period, and the energy rockets to 1742. The wind goes glassy – WSW at just 3 mph. That’s the standout of the whole outlook. For experienced surfers, this is the best you’ll see. The water temp is 59°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year, so it’s a touch chilly but nothing wild.
Thursday the 16th is still very good, especially in the morning. Glassy conditions with an ENE wind of 0 mph, and a 6ft SW swell at 13 seconds. Energy is 1155. That’s a solid session, but the afternoon gets a bit messy with a light cross-shore wind, dropping the quality to marginal.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are a letdown. Strong onshore winds on Friday make it poor, and Saturday morning is glassy but only 2ft of swell – too small to get excited about. Saturday afternoon picks up to 4ft, but the wind is cross-shore, making it average.
From Sunday the 19th through to Monday the 20th, it’s all poor. Onshore winds and choppy conditions dominate. Skip it.
Now, Tuesday the 21st is a beast. A 7ft SW swell arrives in the morning with a 15-second period, energy at 2176. The wind is a strong cross-off from the north at 22 mph, so it’ll be clean but big. Then Tuesday afternoon, it gets even bigger: 8ft from the SW, 15 seconds, energy 3178, with a moderate offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph. This is for experts only – over 8ft is serious. The quality is excellent, but the wind is strong, so expect some power.
Wednesday the 22nd is blown out by strong winds – 28 to 34 mph cross-off, making it a no-go for surfing, but if you’re into kitesurfing, the setup looks interesting with that size swell and clean conditions.
Thursday the 23rd is a decent recovery. Morning sees 5ft from the SW with a 12-second period, energy 788, and a clean cross-off breeze. Afternoon gets a cross-on wind, so don’t linger.
There’s a gap of poor conditions from Friday the 24th to Sunday the 26th, with onshore winds and choppy surf. The 26th in particular is a mess with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds.
Monday the 27th is a novelty – a 6ft SE swell with a short 8-second period, but onshore winds make it junk. Not worth it.
The final few days, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th, drop off to small, weak swells with strong winds. Hardly worth a paddle.
Bottom line: Wednesday the 15th afternoon is the absolute best on offer – glassy, 6ft SW groundswell, and a 16-second period. That’s the one to circle. Thursday the 16th morning is also a good runner-up. Tuesday the 21st afternoon is a real standout for experts only, packing 8ft and offshore wind. The rest is mostly a washout, so pick your moments.
Rusty.
