Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown in feet and knots for Fish Hoek. It’s a slow start, so don’t get too fired up just yet.
For the first few days, the swell is weak. You’re looking at waves around 1 to 3 feet from the SW with some longer period groundswell, but the wave energy is tiny, with combined energy readings staying below 300. Winds are cross-off or occasionally onshore, nothing clean enough to make it worthwhile. The water temperature is about 57°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, around 3° below the norm.
Things pick up a bit Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th. The swell comes up to 5-6 feet from the SW (period 12 seconds), and combined energy gets up to the moderate range (605-781). But the wind is light cross-onshore, putting a little chop on the surface. It’s rideable but not pretty. Size-wise, that’s bumping into intermediate-expert territory.
Wednesday the 8th is your biggest energy day of the first week: swell holds at 6 feet from the SW, waves have a 13-14 second period, and the combined energy readings hit a strong 1409-1495. But the wind goes cross-onshore, then straight onshore Thursday the 9th. At this size, it’s experts-only, and with the wind, you’d be better off on a kite.
From Friday the 10th through Tuesday the 15th, it’s a flat and quiet stretch. Swell drops under 4 feet, combined energy stays weak to moderate, and the wind is mostly cross-off or onshore. The only clean window in that gap is Sunday afternoon the 12th: 4 feet of SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and light cross-off NNW wind. It’s small but clean—worth a paddle if you’re jonesing.
The standout session of the whole 16-day forecast is Thursday the 16th of July. A solid 7-foot SW groundswell rolls in, period 14-15 seconds, with combined energy readings climbing to a very strong 1690-1761. The wind is clean cross-off from the NNW at 12-15 knots. This is big—definitely for experienced surfers only. The long period could make it a bit walled at a beach like Fish Hoek, but with that offshore flow, it’ll be lined up and powerful.
After that, Friday the 17th still has some 5-foot SW swell with cross-off wind, but the energy drops to moderate. By Saturday the 18th, it’s back to small, weak waves.
Best session of the outlook: Thursday July 16th, dawn patrol. 7 feet, SW, 15-second period, clean offshore wind. Crowds are often here, so expect company. That’s the one.
Rusty.
