The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Fish Hoek over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, well, the first couple of days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Tuesday the 14th is a total no-go – tiny 2ft swell from the south, mixed with a cross-off wind, and the energy is just weak at 66. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer of hope comes Wednesday morning, July 15th. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the northwest at just 6 mph, and we’ve got a 3ft SW groundswell rolling in with a very long period of 17 seconds. The energy is moderate (672). It’s going to be clean and glassy, but that long period means it’ll be better suited to the point or reef setups than the beach. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Thursday 16th looks even better. The morning is glassy calm with a clean 6ft SW swell at 13 seconds, and the energy is strong (1069). This is a proper standout. The wind is dead calm, zero, so the surface will be like a mirror. It’s going to be a top-notch session for anyone who can handle a bit of size – that’s not beginner territory, but solid for intermediates and upwards.
Friday the 17th is a dud again with a cross-on wind and choppy conditions, so we skip that.
Saturday the 18th brings a nice little clean-up: a light offshore NW wind at 6 mph, and a 4ft S swell with a 12-second period. It’s not massive, but it’ll be clean and fun for the longer board. The energy is moderate (482).
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are both pretty average with cross-onshore winds, so not worth getting excited about.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 21st of July is a real standout. The morning is glassy calm, and we’ve got a 6ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and strong energy (1259). By the afternoon, it’s a 6ft swell with a light cross-off breeze, and the energy jumps to 1435. That’s proper surf. The wave quality is rated excellent for experienced surfers, and it’s going to be clean. If you’re out there, you’ll be in for a treat.
Wednesday the 22nd is a bit of a beast. The swell jumps to 8ft from the SW with a 14-second period, but the wind is a moderate cross-off from the north at 12-15 mph. The energy is very strong (2610). That’s heavy, expert-only territory, and the tide or conditions might make it a bit tricky.
Thursday the 23rd is blown out by a strong SSE cross-on, so no good.
Then, hold onto your board. Friday the 24th of July is another massive standout. The morning is glassy, with a 10ft SW swell at 13 seconds and an incredible energy of 3027. That is a serious, powerful swell. The wind is just a whisper from the ENE, so it’ll be glassy. This is for the brave and the experienced only – definitely not for beginners or anyone hesitant. It’s a big, powerful day.
Saturday the 25th is still big at 8ft, but the cross-on breeze will mess it up.
Sunday the 26th through Monday the 27th is a bit mixed – the swell is still there, but the winds are iffy.
Tuesday the 28th of July morning is a beauty: glassy conditions, 7ft SW swell at 13 seconds, and strong energy (1554). That’s a clean, solid day for the experienced crew.
And finally, Wednesday the 29th of July is a real cracker. The morning is a clean 10ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period, a light cross-off wind, and the highest energy in the whole forecast at 4082. That’s a very strong, powerful swell. The afternoon holds a 10ft with a light offshore wind too. If you’re an expert, that’s the day to circle in red. The crowds at Fish Hoek can be an issue, but on a day like that, with that size, you’ll only have the hardcore chargers out.
So, the two absolute standouts for the best on offer: the morning of Thursday the 16th of July for clean, medium-sized swell, and the morning of Friday the 24th of July for big, powerful, glassy conditions. Choose your weapon.
