Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the cards for Fish Hoek over the next couple of weeks.
Alright mate, the outlook is quiet to start, then there’s a real pulse of quality swell coming through but it’s a fair way off. We’re looking at mostly small, ordinary conditions for the next week and a half before things fire up.
Saturday 4th through to Sunday 5th are pretty flat and messy. Swell is tiny, around 1ft to 3ft from the SW and WSW, with a very long period (up to 16 seconds) which would be pretty gutless at a beach setup like this. Winds are cross-offshore from the N/NW, but it’s still just poor surf, nothing worth getting wet for.
Monday 6th July morning is the first glimmer of hope. We've got a clean 5ft SW groundswell (11 seconds) with a light glassy easterly breeze. The combined energy is solid moderate (615). Still, it’s only a score that says 'expect good surf', not a standout. Tuesday 7th is similar – glassy mornings, but the afternoon gets a cross-shore ripple.
Then from Wednesday 8th through to Sunday 12th, it’s back to poor quality. Winds turn onshore from the SE, gusting up to 22 mph, and the swell gets messy. The water temperature is about average for this time of year – no anomalies to speak of. Not your time.
The real standout is Thursday 16th July afternoon. This is the one to mark in your calendar. We get a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, and the wind goes completely glassy – dead calm. That’s a recipe for excellent, powerful surf. The combined energy is very strong (3999). This is for experienced surfers only; 10ft is well into expert territory. The swell direction matches the optimum for Fish Hoek (SE), so it should line up nicely. It’s the best on offer by a long shot.
Friday 17th July morning is also a gem – still 10ft from the SSW (15-second period, very long) with a light offshore breeze, calm conditions. Combined energy is even higher at 5476. This is a serious, powerful groundswell that will be clean, but again, experts only. Crowds at Fish Hoek can be often, so expect company for these sessions.
After that, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th drop off quickly in size and cleanliness as onshore winds return.
So, to sum it up: a long flat spell, then a two-day window around Thursday 16th and Friday 17th that is absolute gold for the experienced crew. The rest is for the kite surfers or the walk on the beach.
Rusty.
