The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Fish Hoek over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first day or two are a write-off with poor surf conditions, so don’t even bother waxing up just yet. The water is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good steamer if you’re heading out.

Things start to look up on Saturday the 22nd. The morning shows clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze and a 3ft swell from the SSW. The afternoon gets even better as the wind turns offshore, keeping the 4ft SW swell nice and clean. The energy is moderate (409), and the 11-second period gives it a bit of shape. This is a solid, fun session for the weekend.

Sunday the 23rd is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW with a strong energy (864), but the wind is cross-onshore, making it a bit choppy. It’s marginal, but if you’re desperate, there might be a few.

We hit a dry spell from Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 27th morning. The wind is on or cross-onshore for most of that, with some pretty lumpy conditions. Tuesday the 25th has a decent 6ft swell from the SW with over 1200 energy, but a fresh cross-onshore wind completely ruins it. Not worth it.

Now, hang on to your leggies because the standout is coming. Thursday the 27th afternoon shapes up nicely. The wind turns offshore with a gentle breeze, and the 3ft S swell (11 sec) is small but clean. The following day, Friday the 28th, is the real gem. The morning is glassy with a 3ft WSW swell (14 sec) – that’s a long period groundswell that will wrap in nicely. The afternoon gets even better: a 4ft SW swell with a 16-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and very good surf conditions (804 energy). This is the pick of the first week for sure.

Saturday the 29th keeps the momentum going with a moderate offshore wind and a 4ft SW swell (14 sec) in the morning, building to a 6ft SW swell in the afternoon. The energy jumps to 1279, but the period drops to 9 seconds, making it a bit more jumbled. Still, it’s clean and fun for the experienced.

We then get another lull from Sunday the 30th through to Tuesday the 1st of September. Mostly cross-onshore winds and small, weak swell. Tuesday the 1st afternoon has a glassy 2ft S swell, but it’s pretty ordinary.

Now, the real headline act arrives on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning brings a 7ft SW swell with a 16-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and massive energy (2303). This is expert territory. But the afternoon is where it’s at: an 8ft WSW swell, 14-second period, offshore wind, and a whopping 5209 energy. The forecast says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. This is a big, powerful groundswell – perfect for reefs and points, but that beach break will be a handful. Do not take a log out here.

Things get messy again Thursday the 3rd with a huge 13ft SW swell but cross-onshore winds making it choppy and dangerous. The rest of the week into the 5th is a write-off with poor conditions and onshore winds.

So, to wrap it up: your best bets are Thursday the 27th afternoon through to Saturday the 29th, with the absolute standout being Friday the 28th afternoon. If you’re an expert, Wednesday the 2nd of September is a serious session, but it’s a long way out so keep an eye on the forecast.

Stay stoked.
Rusty
