The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Fish Hoek is serving up for the next couple of weeks.
The first surf that’s worth a look hits on Wednesday, 15 July. Wednesday morning has some clouds, a light cross-off NNW breeze at 15 km/h, and a clean 3ft swell from the SW with a long 17-second period. The water’s at 59°, about average for the time of year, and the combined energy is moderate (672). It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, but crowds are often around. Wednesday afternoon the swell picks up to 6ft, still clean with a light cross-shore SSW breeze, and the energy jumps to strong (1621). The morning is the cleaner window.
Thursday, 16 July, is a cracker. Morning is glassy – SW wind at 5 km/h – with a 6ft swell and a 13-second period. The energy is strong (1155), and the sea is dead clean. This is the standout session of the week. By afternoon, it drops to 5ft with a light cross-shore breeze, still fun but not as good.
Friday, 17 July, the wind turns cross-on from the SE, the swell drops to 4ft, and the period shortens to 11 seconds. Energy is moderate (417), and quality drops. Sit this one out.
Saturday, 18 July, starts flat with a 2ft swell and glassy conditions, energy weak (250). The afternoon perks up with a 4ft swell and a clean offshore WNW breeze at 10 km/h, energy moderate (567). That’s a good late session.
Sunday, 19 July, offers a similar morning – 5ft swell, light cross-off W wind, energy moderate (577). The afternoon turns messy with a cross-on S breeze and chop. Take the morning.
There’s a gap of ordinary surf from Monday, 20 July, until Tuesday, 21 July, when things get heavy. Tuesday morning brings a massive 12ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, and a cross-off NNW breeze at 15 km/h. The combined energy is extreme (5605). This is a big, powerful set – only for experts. It’s clean, but that size and long period will make it dumpy at the beach. Best for the point or reef. The morning is the smartest call.
Wednesday, 22 July, the swell is still big at 7ft, but the wind is a fresh 35 km/h from the N, keeping it clean but blown out. Energy is strong (1832). The afternoon drops to 7ft with similar wind – still too much for most.
Thursday, 23 July, delivers another 12ft monster from the SW, with a long 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on from the SE at 15 km/h. Energy is extreme (6537), but the chop ruins the quality. Only for the hardcore.
From Friday, 24 July, the swell slowly drops from 8ft to around 4ft by Saturday, 25 July, but the wind stays cross-on from the SE or S, keeping conditions choppy. There’s a pulse of 7ft on Saturday afternoon with a 15-second period (energy 1964), but the cross-shore wind makes it lumpy. Not a standout.
The final week, from Sunday, 26 July, to Wednesday, 30 July, is a write-off. The swell lingers between 4ft and 7ft, but the wind is consistently cross-on or onshore from the SE, ESE, or S, with moderate to fresh breezes. The energy drops from 1354 to 440, and conditions are poor to awful. Leave the boards at home.
The standout is Thursday, 16 July morning – glassy, clean, 6ft SW groundswell at Fish Hoek. The other big one is Tuesday, 21 July morning for the experienced crew.
Rusty.
