The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, talking feet and Fahrenheit for the imperial crew, same spot: Fish Hoek.
Water temp is 58°F, which is about 3°F colder than usual for this time of year, so yeah, a bit chilly – bring a thick suit.
First real surf is Saturday, August 22nd in the afternoon. Swell is 4ft from the SW, period 11 seconds, with a light cross-off NW wind at 9 mph. Combined wave energy is moderate at 409. It’s small but clean enough for a few fun ones.
Sunday the 23rd is a dud – 5ft in the morning but the wind goes cross-on from the SSE at 6 mph, and it gets messy. Afternoon gets worse – same wind, chop builds.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are straight-up blown out. Tuesday sees SE winds up to 25 mph, lumpy and nasty. Combined energy hits 1145 but it’s a waste.
Wednesday the 26th: 5ft SE swell with a short 8-second period; light onshore wind. Weak and soft.
Thursday the 27th is the first real gem. Morning: 3ft SSW groundswell at 11 seconds, light NW cross-off wind at 6 mph. Clean and small. Afternoon goes offshore from the NW at 9 mph, still that 3ft SSW swell. That’s clean, workable, and fun. Crowds can be thick, so go early.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are poor – small swell, poor wind.
Now Sunday the 30th of August: huge jump. Morning has 12ft SW at 13 seconds, cross-off WSW wind at 12 mph, strong energy at 3737. That’s big and clean. Afternoon is the big standout: 10ft SW at 12 seconds, light W cross-off at 6 mph. Combined energy is 2468 (moderate-strong), and the surf report says “excellent for experienced surfers.” That’s the one – too big for beginners, but if you’re skilled, get out there.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st drop back but stay choppy. Not worth it.
Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon: 5ft SW at 12 seconds, offshore NW wind at 15 mph. Combined energy 752 (moderate). Clean, punchy – “very good surf conditions.” That’s a solid session.
Thursday the 3rd of September blows up again: 8ft morning, 12ft afternoon, but cross-on wind ruins it. Afternoon energy hits 8276 (very strong) but it’s lumpy and messy.
Friday the 4th stays big (10ft) but cross-on wind. Skip.
Saturday the 5th of September morning: 5ft S swell at 13 seconds, offshore WNW wind at 9 mph. Combined energy 1649 (moderate-strong). The report says “excellent for experienced surfers.” That’s a clean, powerful session.
Sunday the 6th of September: 13ft of SW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. Combined energy 7760 (very strong). Light cross wind from the S. That’s massive, for experts only – but at a beach break like Fish Hoek, that long period may make it close out fast. The afternoon is similar but cross-on ruins it.
Best overall: Sunday afternoon, August 30th – 10ft, light offshore, clean and powerful. Next best: Wednesday afternoon, September 2nd, and Saturday morning, September 5th. There’s flat spells in between, but those days are the ones.
Rusty out.
