Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, Rusty here, and I've got the lowdown on Fish Hoek for the next couple of weeks. The water's a bit chilly, sitting at 58°F which is a touch colder than normal for this time of year, but the wetsuit will sort that out.
We kick off the week with a sweet run starting Monday the 6th of July. The combo of a 5ft swell from the WSW with a period of 11 seconds and glassy, near-zero wind off the NNE is a dream start. The combined energy is moderate (577), and the waves are going to be clean and tidy. Monday afternoon holds the same vibe with a touch more energy (607). Into Tuesday the 7th of July, the swell shifts a bit to the SW at 5ft to 5ft, the period stretches to 12-13 seconds, and we've got a clean cross-offshore breeze. The afternoon session on Tuesday is a standout with very good conditions and a combined energy of 914. Wednesday the 8th is the best of the bunch early on – 5ft of SW swell, a beautiful 13-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the NW. The energy is strong (1137). That's the pick of the first week, for sure.
Now, Wednesday afternoon takes a nosedive. The wind swings onshore from the SSE at 9 mph, the swell jumps to 6ft with a 16-second period, and the energy gets huge (2608), but it's messy and marginal. From Thursday the 9th right through to Saturday the 11th, it's a no-go zone. Strong onshore and cross-onshore winds from the SE and SSE, blowing 12-19 mph, turning the 4ft to 7ft SW swell into a lumpy, choppy mess. The energy is still high, but it's all noise. A solid four-day gap of poor surf.
We get a reprieve on the 12th of July. Sunday morning delivers glassy conditions with a 3ft SSW swell, and the combined energy is low (354), but it's clean. The wind is dead calm from the NE. That's a tiny window for a small wave board. The following week, from the 13th to the 15th, sees the swell dropping right off and the wind picking up, so it's not worth getting excited about.
Then, the long-range promise comes in. On Friday the 17th of July, we've got a decent-looking swell filling in. The morning shows a 5ft SW swell with a 12-second period and a clean cross-offshore NW wind at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate (698) and the forecast is "very good". That's a solid morning session. The afternoon drops a bit to 5ft but still has clean conditions. It's a bit far out, so keep an eye on it, but it's the best bet in the second week.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th is back to onshore crud, and the 20th and 21st of July offer a few small, clean windows with light offshore winds and 3ft to 3ft of swell, good for a longboard or a funboard if you're keen.
The standout of the whole forecast is Wednesday the 8th of July morning. Clean, 5ft, SW groundswell with a 13-second period and offshore wind. The energy is strong, and the bank should be holding. Get on it.
Rusty.
