Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, let's talk Fish Hoek. Water temp's about normal for this time of year, nothing wild.
Early on, Sunday the 5th is a non-starter – you've got a 2ft to 3ft swell from the SW, but it’s just not doing anything. The cross-off wind keeps it clean for a beginner to paddle around, but there's barely any energy (115). Save your energy.
Monday the 6th morning is the first real sign of life. Wind goes totally glassy and the swell holds at 5ft from the WSW with an 11-second period. That's clean and rideable for your average surfer. The afternoon gets messy again though.
Tuesday the 7th morning is another beauty. Glassy, 5ft of SW groundswell at a 12-second period. This is what we come here for – clean, lined-up, good shape. The energy is moderate (567). Get it before the wind switches in the afternoon.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th go south. Swell pumps to 5ft–7ft but the wind is cross-on and onshore, churning it up. The energy is high (1311–3785) but the quality is garbage. That's kite-surfing wind, not paddle-surfing waves.
From Friday the 10th all the way through Tuesday the 14th, it's a dead zone. Onshore winds and dropping swell. You're looking at a solid gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Wednesday the 15th brings a reprieve. The wind is cross-off from the NNW again, and you get a clean 3ft SW swell with a 14-second period. Moderate energy (361). That's a lovely, clean longboard day.
The big one to circle is Friday the 17th of July morning. Glassy conditions, 7ft of SW groundswell with a 13-second period. The energy is strong (1326). This is powerful, clean, and for experienced surfers only. Beginners stay on the beach.
Then Sunday the 19th of July morning is the other crown jewel. 5ft SW groundswell with a very long 14-second period, and the wind is glassy. The energy is very strong (1578). The long period will make the waves better at the reefs and points – expect longer waits between sets, but the waves that come through will be absolute gems. This is excellent stuff. Crowds are often at Fish Hoek, but the quality will be worth it.
Monday the 20th of July morning still has some clean, glassy 4ft surf to finish off.
So the plan is simple: first week is mostly a write-off after early Monday and Tuesday. The real action is Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th mornings. Lock 'em in.
