The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what the ocean's got in store for us over the next couple of weeks down at Fish Hoek. It's a bit of a slow burner, so pay attention.
Right off the bat, the start of this stretch looks pretty poor. We're looking at a few days with no real surf to get excited about. Sunday the 23rd is barely hanging on, with a small 5ft southwest swell and a cross-on breeze making things chopped up. The water is sitting at 57.9°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year. Monday and Tuesday just get windier and messier, so save your energy.
We're going to have to stare at a flat, poor-quality ocean for a few days. The swell is there, but the wind and conditions are just all wrong. It's not until Thursday the 27th that things start to show a little life. The morning sees a change to a light cross-offshore wind, cleaning up a 4ft south swell. The afternoon looks even better with a proper offshore breeze and clean 3-4ft waves. It’s small, but it might be worth a paddle if you're desperate for a fix. Then it gets poor again for Friday.
The next real window appears on Sunday the 30th. A fresh offshore wind and a 5-6ft WSW swell should make for some clean, rideable waves in the morning, though the tide might be a bit iffy. It's a start. Then Monday the 31st holds similar promise with a clean 6ft WSW swell in the morning, though again, "marginal" tide conditions are on the cards. Tuesday looks poor again as the swell drops and clouds roll in.
Now, for the good stuff. The standout stretch is shaping up for the start of September. Wednesday the 2nd is where it starts to get serious. The morning brings a solid 8ft WSW swell with a light cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. This is looking like one for the experienced crew only. That afternoon, things get blown out by a strong 28 mph wind, so don't be late.
Thursday the 3rd is big. We're talking a massive 13ft WSW swell with a ton of power. The wind is up there, but the waves themselves will be huge. This is definitely not for the faint of heart, and only for experts. The afternoon backs off a bit to 10ft, but it's still solid.
After that big push, Friday the 4th has a clean 6ft SW swell with a good offshore wind in the afternoon, looking like a proper, much more user-friendly session.
And then, the one to really circle on the calendar is Saturday the 5th of September. The morning is looking absolutely mint. A long-period, 15-second, 11-12ft SW groundswell with light offshore winds. This is the definition of clean, powerful waves. It’s a big day, so it's expert territory, but it should be special. A long-period swell like this is best handled by the points and reefs, so keep that in mind at the Hoek.
The following week starts to fade. Sunday the 6th gets chopped by a cross-on wind, and then Monday the 7th looks fun again – a clean 6-7ft SW swell with light winds in the morning and afternoon, a great way to wrap up the period.
So, the picks of the fortnight are clearly the 5th of September for the biggest and most powerful clean swell, and the 7th for the best all-round, less intimidating session. The rest is a case of picking your moments.
Alright, stay stoked.
