Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, grab a coffee and settle in. Rusty here. We’re looking at a solid run of clean surf starting this morning at Fish Hoek, but the next week and a half is a real mixed bag, so you need to pick your moments.
It kicks off Monday morning, July 6th, with a glassy 5ft swell rolling in from the WSW. The period’s a healthy 11 seconds, giving the waves some proper shape. The water’s sitting at 60°F, which is about normal for this time of year. That morning session is the standout for the entire forecast. It’s glass, pure and simple. The wind is a dead calm NE, and the combined energy is a healthy 577 (moderate) – everything lines up for a silky, clean session.
Monday afternoon the wind swings WSW but stays light, keeping the surf clean. Tuesday, July 7th, is another beauty. Morning sees 5ft from the SW with a 12-second period and a light NNW breeze; the energy bumps up to 703 (moderate). Tuesday afternoon gets even better: a light W wind, a 5ft SW swell, and the period stretching out to 13 seconds. The energy hits 914 (moderate) and the waves will feel punchy.
Now, Wednesday the 8th is a tale of two halves. Get in the water early. The morning is dreamy: 3ft of SW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, a glassy WNW offshore wind, and a combined energy of 1160 (moderate to strong). Those long-period swells can be a bit straight at the beach, but Fish Hoek is fairly exposed, so expect some beautifully lined-up walls. That afternoon, though, the wind slams onshore from the SSE at 12 mph, the swell jumps to 6ft, and the energy goes ballistic at 2472 (strong). The waves will be a messy, choppy mess.
From Thursday, July 9th, right through to Saturday, July 18th, it’s pretty grim. The wind is rammed from the SE and SSE, blowing onshore or cross-onshore at a solid 12 to 18 mph. The swell hangs around the 3ft to 7ft mark, but the quality is shot. Even the smaller days are plagued by lumpy, choppy conditions. There’s a real dry spell there – over a week of mostly junk.
We get a flicker of hope on Sunday, July 19th. The morning is marginal with a 7ft WSW swell and a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon is the real story. The wind drops to a light SW cross-off, the swell backs off to a clean 7ft from the WSW, and the energy settles to 850 (moderate). That Sunday arvo is the second true standout – a solid, clean wave. And then Monday, July 20th, delivers another glassy dawn patrol: 5ft from the WSW with a 10-second period and not a breath of wind.
After that, it’s back to onshore SE winds from Tuesday the 21st, with the swell pumping up to 6ft but turning ugly again.
So, the bottom line: the absolute best of it is this morning, Monday July 6th, for a glassy session, and next Sunday afternoon, July 19th, for the clean, powerful 7ft swell. That Sunday is the big one if you can wait. Don’t bother with the rest of the week unless you’re keen on a wind session.
Rusty.
