Alright folks, Rusty here checkin' in with a look at what's on the cards for Fish Hoek over the next couple of weeks.
First things first, the water’s runnin' a bit chilly for this time of year, sittin' at 57°F with an anomaly of -3°F, so it’s a bit colder than normal – you’ll want a decent steamer.
We've got a slow start, but things are about to turn on. Monday the 6th of July is where it starts to get interesting. The morning brings in a clean 5ft swell from the WSW, and the wind is glassy. The combined energy is moderate (577) and it's glassy, making for some super clean conditions. This is a solid, consistent option for intermediate surfers, and it holds through the afternoon too. Tuesday the 7th keeps that good run going with another glassy morning and a clean 5ft swell from the SW, with the energy building. The afternoon gets even better – still clean, with a bit more push at 5ft and an excellent combined energy of 874.
The standout of the whole window is shaping up to be Wednesday morning, the 8th of July. We’re talkin' 5ft of clean SW groundswell with a 13-second period, zero wind, and a glassy surface. The combined energy is a strong 1102. That’s the kind of morning you set the alarm for – it’ll be worth the early start.
Now, after that, the wind goes sour from Thursday the 9th right through to Saturday the 11th. Strong onshore and cross-onshore SE winds blow the place out, so be prepared for a few days of chunky, unsurfable conditions.
There’s a bit of a reset on Sunday the 12th. The wind goes glassy again, but the swell drops to 4ft from the south, with a shorter period, so it’s good but not as special as what we had.
We then hit a flat spell from Monday the 13th through to Wednesday the 15th – small waves and poor conditions. Nothing to write home about.
But hold on, because the real pay-off comes later. Look to Thursday the 16th of July. The afternoon brings a solid 8ft SSW groundswell with a 13-second period, combined with clean, offshore NW winds. The wave energy is a massive 2337. That’s serious, well overhead swell for experienced surfers only – this is the absolute standout of the outlook. The offshore wind will groom it nicely. After that, it gets a bit messy again with strong winds through the 17th, but there are smaller, surfable windows towards the end of the week on the 18th.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are Monday 6th through Wednesday 8th for clean, fun-sized waves, and then mark your calendar for Thursday 16th July afternoon for the big, clean, expert-level session. Don't sleep on it.
Rusty.
