The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks at Huntington Pier are looking pretty slim for anything that’s gonna get your heart pumping. We've got a stretch of small, weak surf and a lot of onshore wind messing things up. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might get a few fun ones, but honestly, the board might be better off in the car for a while.
Right off the bat, the water is sitting at a very warm 71° – that’s a good 4° above what’s normal for this time of year. You won't need a bootie, that’s for sure.
We start this Monday afternoon, the 17th. There’s a tiny 3ft swell from the SSW, but it’s getting chopped up by a cross-onshore breeze at 12 mph. It’s not gonna be pretty. This weak energy is only reading 332, so don't get your hopes up.
Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are a bit of a tease. The swell drops to 2ft, but the period is a nice and long 16-17 seconds. The wind goes light and offshore in the mornings, which will clean it up. But the energy is really weak, around 300-355. You might get a few glassy, waist-high leftovers, but it’s going to be slow and inconsistent. Not worth rushing out for.
Thursday the 20th, the wind swings back onshore from the south at 9 mph, and it’s all over. The swell stays at 2ft but the energy drops to 256, and it gets choppy. Forget it. The whole weekend from Friday the 21st through Sunday the 23rd is pretty much a write-off. The swell fades to 1ft-2ft, and while the period bumps up on Sunday the 23rd to a 19-second groundswell, the energy is only around 200-300. It’s just too small.
The start of the next week, the 24th through the 27th, is more of the same. Small swells in the 1ft to 2ft range, mostly from the SW, with light winds in the mornings that could offer a clean but tiny wave for a log. The long period (16-18 seconds) is there, but there’s just no power behind it, with energy readings stuck in the 200s.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. The outlook for the end of the month and into the first of September actually shows a pulse of real swell. It’s a long way out, so treat this as promising but not set in stone. Starting Friday the 28th, we see the energy jump up to 452-493, with the swell still small at 2ft-2ft, but the period is 20-21 seconds. That’s some serious groundswell travel time.
The standout is Saturday the 29th. The swell jumps to 4ft from the SSW with an 18-second period. The energy is cranking at a strong 931-942. Winds look light at 6-9 mph, which is a big plus. This is the one to keep an eye on. It’ll be a proper chest-to-head-high wave, and with that long period, it should have some real push to it. It’s going to be a crowd magnet, so expect some company, but this is the best bet of the whole period.
Sunday the 30th will still have some size, about 4ft-4ft, with the energy still strong at 693-882. The winds are light, but a touch cross-onshore, so it might have a little texture. Still, it’s a good option for the weekend. After that, the swell slowly fades back down into the 2ft range with onshore winds by the 1st of September, so that window at the end is definitely where you want to be. It’s a long way off, so keep your fingers crossed, but that Saturday, the 29th, looks like the day to make some plans.
Rusty out.
