The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the surf is looking pretty flat and messy for the first week. We’re not seeing any real standouts, just a lot of marginal conditions. The swell is small and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which is gonna leave the surface chopped up. It’s a bit of a slow start, but hang in there, because things do start to look a little more promising as we head into the end of the month and into August.
Our main spot to talk about is Huntington Pier. It’s a very consistent break, exposed to the swell, and it’s a beginner-friendly spot. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. You’ll be fine in a wetsuit top or just a spring suit.
Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th are a write-off. The swell is tiny, around 2ft to 3ft from the SW, with a long period of 18 seconds, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. The combined energy is weak (299–330 on Saturday). It’s just not worth paddling out. The water is choppy and the waves are poor.
Monday, July 20th through to Thursday, July 23rd is more of the same. Swell stays small, around 2ft to 4ft, but the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore. The wave energy picks up a bit (moderate, between 390 and 703), but it’s all poor surf. The wind is just ruining it.
Friday, July 24th we start to see a little flicker. The morning has 4ft of S swell, but it’s cross-onshore, so still choppy. The energy is up to 988, but it’s still just marginal. Not great.
Now, Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th are where it gets a bit more interesting. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the SSW, with a period of 13–14 seconds. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1244 on Saturday morning. The wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, but it’s light. This is the best of a mediocre bunch. The waves will be a bit more powerful, but still a bit bumpy. It’s marginal, but it’s the closest we’ve got to a decent session. The morning of the 25th is the pick.
Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th keep the swell around 4ft from the SSW, with a very long period of 18–19 seconds. The energy is strong (1124–1363). That long period means the waves will have lots of push and better shape, but at a beach break, it can break a bit straight. The wind is light cross-onshore, which is as good as it gets for this stretch. Definitely the best looking days in the whole outlook. If you can get out early on the 27th, the wind is lightest and the swell is solid.
After that, it all fades again. Wednesday, July 29th through to Sunday, August 2nd the swell drops back to 3ft to 4ft, the energy falls off, and the wind stays onshore. It’s back to poor to marginal conditions. The last day, Sunday, August 2nd, has a tiny 2ft swell with a long period, but it’s not enough to get excited about.
So, the standout window is really Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th. The swell is solid, the period is long, and the wind is light. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. Get on it. The rest of the time, you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty out.
