The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's talk about what's on offer for the Huntington Pier zone over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it's a pretty quiet stretch for Huntington Pier. We've got a long run of small, marginal conditions. The first real chance to even think about paddling out isn't until Tuesday morning, August 18th, and even then it's a struggle.
Tuesday morning the 18th, we've got a tiny little 2 ft groundswell from the SSW, with a long 16-second period. The overall energy is weak (309). The wind is light and from the SW, which puts it onshore—not ideal. The water temp is about average for this time of year. It's a beginner-friendly wave height, but it's just too small and a bit bumpy. The afternoon only gets worse as the wind picks up and goes cross-onshore, chopping it up.
We go through the whole week with the same story: small swell, 1 ft to 3 ft, and tricky cross-onshore winds. The mornings on Wednesday the 19th, Thursday the 20th, and Friday the 21st are all pretty poor. There's a bit of a groundswell with a 15-16 second period, but the energy is weak (327 down to 154) and the onshore flow kills the quality. It's just not worth the drive.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are more of the same. Sunday morning has a very long period swell from the SW at 19 seconds, but it’s only 1 ft. That long period at a beach break like Huntington means it'll likely just straighten out and close out. The energy is still low (237).
The pattern doesn't shift much into the second week. Monday the 24th through Thursday the 27th remains tiny and mostly cross-onshore. The swell directions keep swinging between SW and SSW.
Now, finally, we start to see a little something. On Saturday morning, August 29th, we get a slight bump in the swell. The forecast shows 3 ft from the SSW, with a 17-second period and the combined energy climbing to 570—that's a moderate energy level. The wind is light and from the SW, which is onshore, but with that light breeze, it might be clean enough for a fun session on the longboard. It's still a beginner-friendly size, but the energy is building. The real standout might be the afternoon of the 29th, the swell holds at 3 ft and the energy is even stronger (645), but the wind picks up to a gentle breeze. It's a toss-up. Sunday the 30th continues with similar 3 ft swell, but it gets messy with a cross-onshore wind from the SSE.
After that, it fades back down to the 2 ft to 3 ft range through the end of the run into September 2nd. The morning of Tuesday, September 1st, shows a light cross-onshore breeze with a 2 ft SSW swell, but it's another marginal one.
The best bet in this whole window is the weekend of August 29th and 30th. The swell is finally over 2 ft, and the energy is moderate. Saturday morning, the 29th, with that 3 ft, 17-second SSW groundswell and light wind, is your best shot for a clean, cruisy session. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but that's the one to circle on the calendar. Just remember, crowds are possible at the pier, so get out early.
Rusty, signing off.
