The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and degrees.

We’re looking at Le Gouerou, and the first week and a half is a total bust. From Wednesday the 5th all the way through to Saturday the 16th, there’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the surf quality is just no good. There’s a couple of small moments – Sunday the 9th morning has a clean 2ft from the WNW, but it’s weak and the wind gets choppy in the afternoon. Tuesday the 11th morning is also clean with a 2ft WNW swell, but it’s still just “surfable but very ordinary.” Nothing to write home about.

The water temp is 62°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thicker wetsuit.

The real standout, and the only thing worth chasing, is Monday the 17th of August. The morning has a solid 12ft swell from the WNW (11-second period) with a combined energy of 3346 – that’s very strong. The wind is onshore from the NW at 12 mph, which is a bummer, but the amount of water moving is serious. The afternoon holds the same size and energy (3020). This is for experts only. 12ft is big, and with that 11-second period, it’s a groundswell that will be powerful and fast. At a beach break, that long period means it’ll be walling up and closing out, so you need to be on your game. The crowds are listed as “often,” so don’t expect peace and quiet.

After that, Tuesday the 18th drops to a 4ft to 4ft swell from the WNW, but the wind turns back onshore, ruining the quality. The energy is moderate (325 to 225).

So, for the average surfer, this is a two-week wait. The only day that fires up is Monday the 17th, but it’s big and mean. For the rest of us, it’s a time to check the charts and hope for better.

Rusty.
