Alright, let me tell you what I’m seeing for the next couple of weeks. Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty flat and sad for a good while. The first real chance of anything even remotely rideable doesn’t show up until Monday the 13th, and even then, it’s not much to write home about.
We’re looking at Galveston-61st Street Pier. The water temp is sitting at 87°F right now, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, pushing past the usual range.
The pattern for the first week is pretty grim. Small, weak swells and onshore winds. Thursday the 9th through Sunday the 13th morning, it’s all tiny junk with SSE winds blowing straight on. The swell energy is pathetic, barely getting into double digits. There’s a small window on Monday afternoon the 13th where the wind goes glassy, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the SSE, but the energy is still weak, and the period is a short 6 seconds. It’s surfable, but only just. The rest of the week is cross-onshore slop with fresh breezes and lumpy conditions.
The second week looks a little more active, but still not good. From around the 20th of July, we see a bit more size, with the swell hitting 4 ft from the SSW on the afternoon of Tuesday the 21st, and the combined energy finally gets into the moderate range. But the wind is a consistent cross-onshore, keeping it messy and choppy. It’s always going to be a bit of a battle out there.
Honestly, for the entire 16-day window, there’s no standout session. The Monday afternoon the 13th is the only time the wind cleans up, but the swell is too weak to do anything with. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your best bet, but keep your expectations on the floor. With the onshore winds and small, weak swell, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone paddling a traditional board.
