Table - best surf conditions forecast for Galveston-61st Street Pier over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's cooking for Galveston-61st Street Pier over the next couple of weeks.
Well, to be straight with you, it's a tough run ahead. The surf is going to be tiny and pretty gutless for most of the forecast period. We're looking at a two-week stretch where the waves rarely push past knee-high. The water is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the swim trunks will be comfortable.
We kick off this Sunday, July 12th, with a storm threat and a moderate SSE breeze making a mess of things. That pretty much sets the tone. For the next 14 days, the swell never gets above 3 ft, and with short periods of 4 to 6 seconds, it’s all weak, wind-driven slop. The wave energy is low, ranging from a measly 12 to, at best, 89 on the Friday afternoon of July 17th.
The real bright spot, and I mean the only one worth mentioning, comes on Wednesday morning, July 15th. The wind goes glassy out of the SSE, and we have a tiny 2 ft swell from the SSE. It’s barely surfable, but glassy conditions are a major positive, and it'll be the cleanest you'll see it. Honestly, for a beginner, that morning might be the only time it's worth even looking at the water. North of the pier might offer a slightly cleaner wedge, but we're splitting hairs here.
After that, it's a long, drawn-out grind. There are a few other moments of glassy conditions, like the morning of Saturday, July 18th, with a 1 ft swell, and Sunday, July 19th, with a 1 ft swell. Even Wednesday morning, July 23rd, cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore breeze from the west on a 2 ft swell. But the swell is just too weak to get excited about. For a beach/pier setup like this, with wave energy so low (often in the teens and twenties), it's just not going to wrap in with any power.
If you're a kiter, on the other hand, there are days with a steady 15-16 mph onshore breeze, especially Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in the third week, which might get you moving. But for a paddle surfer, this is a long, flat run. It tends not to stay this poor for too long around here, but this particular 16-day window looks like a write-off.
Stay patient, check the charts again in a week.
Rusty.
