The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on Freshwater east for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it's a rough start. This spot is a very sheltered setup and it rarely breaks, and this forecast is a real test of patience. We're looking at a long, dry spell with no real surf on offer for the first week or so.
The first few days are a bust. Friday the 21st has tiny 2-foot swell from the WSW with a short period, and it's just not doing anything. The combined energy is a weak 72, and it carries on like that, dropping to nothing. We've got a solid gap here with no real recommendations until things start to change.
Around Tuesday the 25th, we see a bit of a bump in the water, but it's a messy 4-foot east swell with a period of just 5 seconds. The wind is cross-onshore and choppy, and the combined energy is 102, which is barely moderate. Not one for the paddle board.
The second week still isn't great, but it gets a little more interesting. The combined energy finally starts climbing into the three-digit range. The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore from the 28th onward, which is a major positive for keeping the surface clean. The water temp is sitting 2° warmer than average for this time of year, so it's a touch warmer than normal.
Now, if you're set on getting wet, the best of a poor bunch is the period from Saturday the 29th of August through to Monday the 1st of September. The swell builds from 4 feet to 6 feet from the WSW, with periods around 7-8 seconds. The combined energy is strong, hitting 231 on the 29th morning and peaking at 463 on the Monday morning. The wind is offshore or cross-off, which will keep things clean. This is still a very sheltered spot, so the wave quality might be a bit fat, but at least you'll be surfing. The Saturday morning (29th) with 4-foot, clean offshore wind from the W and a combined energy of 231 (moderate wave energy) is probably the pick – it's the most surfable window we've got. The 6-foot on the 31st is getting a bit too big for beginners, and the period is short, so it'll be a bit crumbly.
After that, it drops away again. The 5th of September sees it all fizzle out to ankle-slappers. It's a tough run, but the forecasts can change. For now, if you're desperate, pencil in that last weekend of August. Rusty out.
