The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch isn’t looking like a classic. We’ve got a long 16-day window ahead, but the first proper surf worth mentioning doesn’t kick in until Thursday, 28 August, so there’s a quiet gap of a few days at the start with nothing to ride.
The overall pattern is a mix of small, weak swells and a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind. The water temp at Freshwater East is sitting at 65°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re waiting for a wave.
Freshwater East is a beach and reef setup, but it rarely breaks, so any surf here is a bit of a gift. It’s very sheltered and only really picks up on a SW swell. The best on offer looks like Saturday, 30 August morning. The swell is coming from the WSW at 5ft with a short period of 6 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW at 12 mph, which should keep the surface clean. The combined swell energy is moderate (162) – not pumping, but it’s the most rideable window we’ve got. Be aware, this break can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
The other standout is Friday, 29 August. The morning session sees a 6ft WSW swell with a 7 second period and a strong offshore wind from the W at 25 mph. That’s going to be clean and powerful, but at that size it’s more for the experienced crew. The afternoon holds 7ft from the same direction, again with a fresh offshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to strong (474) in the afternoon, so there’s some push, but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and hard to paddle into. The wave quality is still poor, so temper expectations.
From Monday, 1 September onward, the surf drops right off again – tiny swells with long periods (17 seconds) but barely any height. The wind stays offshore, so it’ll be clean, but you’ll be waiting on a long-period groundswell that’s almost flat. That’s a lot of paddle for nothing.
If you’re a kiter, the bigger, windier afternoons with strong cross-shore flow might look more interesting than stand-up surfing.
Stay patient, pick your window, and keep your eyes on the ocean.
Rusty.
