The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf outlook for Freshwater East. Mate, I gotta be straight with you—this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim. There’s a big ol’ gap from now until the 26th of July with basically nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3ft to 0.7ft, and even when it does try to show up, the conditions are just poor. The water temp is sitting at 64°F with a 4°F anomaly, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—so at least you won’t be freezing if you do go for a swim, but that’s about the only positive.
The first real glimpse of something happens on the 26th of July. Sunday morning brings a little pulse of 3ft swell from the west, with a combined energy of 48 (weak). Not exactly firing. The wind is cross-off from the north at 16 mph, keeping it clean, but the swell is tiny and the period is short at 6 seconds. It’s a beach and reef setup, but it rarely breaks, so don’t get your hopes up.
Now, the one standout—if you can even call it that—is the 27th of July. Monday morning and afternoon both see a 6ft west swell with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 270 (moderate), so there’s actually some push. The wind is offshore from the northwest at 12 to 16 mph, which will keep the faces clean. But that 7-second period is short and fat, so it’ll be a bit dumpy and messy. Still, it’s the best we’ve got. This swell is big enough for beginners to have a crack, but it’s not gonna be pretty. The break is very sheltered, so it might not even pick up the full swell. Keep in mind it rarely breaks here, so this is a rare event.
The 28th of July drops back to 4ft to 3ft from the west, with combined energy around 150 to 109 (moderate). Wind is cross-off from the NNW at 12 mph, so clean enough. But again, the period is short at 7 seconds, and for a spot that’s inconsistent, it’s just not going to be worth the drive.
After that, it fades out again. The 1st of August shows a 4ft west swell with combined energy of 115 to 124 (moderate), but the period is still only 6 seconds. The wind is cross-off from the northwest. It’s the same story—clean but weak.
Overall, mate, if you’re desperate, the 27th of July is your best bet, but don’t expect much. This spot is a real beggar for swell, and this outlook proves it. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, I’d leave the board in the shed.
Rusty.
