The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – this 16-day forecast for Freshwater East is a tough one. The spot is very sheltered and rarely breaks, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing. There’s a long, quiet gap at the start with pretty much nothing to ride. For the first week or so, we’re looking at tiny swell, poor conditions, and mostly cross-onshore winds. The water is sitting at 65°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a weird one, but it doesn’t help the waves.
The first real flicker of life comes on Thursday, July 23rd in the morning. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the east, period of 5 seconds, and combined energy of 102 (moderate energy). It’s a bit short-period and messy, with onshore wind, so not a standout. The afternoon cleans up with a light offshore, but the swell drops to 3ft. Still, a clean 3ft wave at Freshwater East is about as good as it gets here.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worth circling – is Monday, July 27th. The morning is a write-off with onshore wind, but the afternoon? Glassy. Dead calm. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the WSW, period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 300 (strong energy). That’s the biggest, most consistent-looking swell of the whole run, and with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean. Now, 5ft is fine for most surfers, but at Freshwater East, it’s a rare treat. The swell direction is WSW, which is close to the optimum SW direction, so it should wrap in okay. Crowds are possible here on a good day, and with a rare break like this, expect a few locals to be out. This is the pick of the bunch.
Before that, Tuesday, July 28th morning is also glassy, with a 2ft swell from the west, period of 8 seconds, and energy of 90 (weak). It’s tiny but clean. Wednesday, July 29th morning has a 2ft swell from the SW, period of 7 seconds, with offshore wind and energy of 101 (moderate). That’s clean and rideable, but small.
So, bottom line: there’s a lot of flat days. The first week is a bust. The best bet is the afternoon of July 27th – glassy, 5ft, and decent energy. It’s not pumping, but for Freshwater East, it’s as good as it gets. The rest is small, clean, and marginal. If you’re a beginner, the 5ft is fine, but don’t expect anything over 5ft. For experts, there’s nothing to get excited about. If the wind picks up with that 5ft swell on July 26th, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Stay hopeful, forecasts can change. Rusty.
