The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Freshwater East is the only game in town this period, and it’s a very sheltered, rarely-breaking beginner beach-and-reef set-up, so don’t expect much. Water temp is sitting at roughly 65°, which is about 5° warmer than average for this time of year – almost like wearing a spring suit when you’d normally need a steamer. That’s unusual.
The first 7 days are pretty grim, to be honest. Tiny, weak swells with combined energies mostly in single digits, all under 2 ft. Saturday morning 18th July has a tiny 0.7 ft from the west with light cross-breeze, poor conditions. Sunday 19th has a brief spike of 2 ft but an onshore wind, making it even worse. Monday through Friday 24th sees nothing but 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft slop, poor conditions. It’s flatlined. Not worth paddling out.
Now, Saturday 25th July – not a full red-letter day, but it’s the only session worth talking about. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the west, period is a short 7 seconds, combined wave energy hits 211 – moderate. This is too big for beginners and could be tricky with that short period. Wind goes offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, which will clean it up nicely. The afternoon drops to 4 ft but stays clean with offshore wind. This is the best we get all period.
Sunday 26th drops back to 0.3 ft. Monday 27th offers a 3 ft with gentle offshore wind, energy only 57, weak. Tuesday 28th has a 3 ft west swell, 6-second period, 81 energy. Nothing exciting. From 29th July onward it’s back to tiny dross – 2 ft, 2 ft, 0.7 ft across the first days of August. Sunday 2nd August has a 0.7 ft with a cross-chop from a moderate breeze.
To sum it up: you’ve got a long flat spell, a single day of okay waves on Saturday 25th July with clean offshore wind and moderate energy, then back to nothing. Freshwater East rarely breaks, and this forecast proves it. The outlook is weak. But forecasts change – sometimes a window opens.
