The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Freshwater East.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you—this is a lean stretch. The first two weeks or so are looking pretty flat. From Sunday the 19th of July right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny, mostly 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft, and occasionally touching 2 ft. The energy is weak, with combined energy values scrapping the bottom of the barrel – barely reaching double digits, like 17 or 9. The swell direction is mostly out of the SW or W, which is the optimum direction for this spot, but it’s just not showing up with any grunt. The one bit of good news is the wind: a lot of mornings are glassy or have light offshore breezes (NW or WNW), so if there was any swell, it would be clean. But there isn’t.
The water temperature is sitting at 65° on the afternoon of the 19th, and the anomaly is 5°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. Nice for a swim, but not for a surf.
The first real sign of life shows up on Tuesday the 28th of July. We’ve got a jump in the swell: 5 ft on the morning from the W, with a period of 7 seconds. That’s a short period, so it’s a bit fat and soft, but the energy finally gets into triple digits at 201, which is a moderate push. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 15 mph, so it’ll be clean. It’s a bit of a novelty, having actual surf. The afternoon drops to 4 ft but still has good energy (123) and stronger offshore winds from the W at 19 mph. This is the standout window. It’s not perfect, but it’s all we’ve got.
That bump fades quickly. Wednesday the 29th sees 3 ft in the morning, dropping to 2 ft by afternoon, and the energy falls back to 69 and 33. The wind stays offshore, so it’s clean but small. After that, we’re back to ankle-biters through the rest of the period into early August.
The break itself is a beach and reef setup, but it’s very sheltered and rarely breaks. That’s the honest truth of it. When a wave finally shows up on the 28th, it could be fun for a beginner, but at 5 ft it’s pushing the limit for a learner. Crowds are possible, but given how rarely it works, if you’re there at the right time you might have it to yourself.
So, bottom line: the week starting Monday the 27th of July has the most promise, with a standout on Tuesday the 28th. After that, it’s a long wait again. That’s the way it goes here sometimes.
Rusty.
