Alright, let’s get straight into it. This is the 16-day look for Freshwater East, and I’ll be honest with you right from the start – it’s a tough run. This break is a sheltered, rarely breaking beach and reef setup that needs a very specific SW swell to really light up, and we just aren’t getting it in this window. You’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and mostly poor conditions. The first week is basically a write-off, and the second week doesn’t offer much hope either.
We kick off Monday, July 6th with some clouds and a tiny 1ft swell from the W, but with a 12 mph cross-off wind, it’s clean but still poor. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – about 3° above average (62° to 59°F). The combined energy is weak, sitting in the 30s (31). That pretty much sets the tone.
Tuesday the 7th through to the 10th is more of the same: tiny 1ft to 2ft west swells, with periods between 8 and 10 seconds. The winds actually get pretty good – we see glassy conditions on the 8th morning and a full offshore on the 9th – but there’s just no grunt in the water. The wave energy barely gets into the 40s or 50s (43, 32, 25, 30). It’s frustrating because the conditions would be there for a clean wave if there was any swell to ride.
Then from the 11th through the 14th, the swell direction swings to the E, but the period drops to a terrible 4 or 5 seconds. That’s pure windswell, no drive. Heights creep up a bit, hitting 3ft on the 12th and 5ft on the 13th morning, but with a moderate cross-onshore wind and that short period, it’s just choppy, messy, and poor. The energy on the 13th morning finally reaches a moderate 143, but the quality is still given the worst score.
After the 14th, it fades right back. The rest of the month is a scatter of tiny swells from the WSW and SW, with very little energy. On the 18th you get a 0.3ft swell from the SW with a period of 13 seconds, and again on the 20th you see another 0.3ft swell with a crazy long period of 18 seconds. That shows the potential for a groundswell from that ideal SW direction, but it’s just not big enough to break consistently. The combined energy is pitiful at 9 or 19. There’s no standout day here – not one single session I’d point to and say “go.” It’s a blank run, and for a rarely breaking spot like Freshwater East, that’s not unusual. You’d be waiting a long, long time for a wave that’s worth paddling out for.
