The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one for the locals. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for a proper paddle. There's just nothing worth your time. The forecast is basically a long, flat, and messy story.
Let's get the water temp out of the way. When we see the first bit of hope on the 18th, the water is sitting at a very warm 65°, which is a good 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. That's a solid anomaly, making it feel like a bath.
But that's where the good news ends. The whole run is a bust. The only pulse of energy comes on Thursday, the 20th of August. We get a bump of swell from the W, hitting 6 ft in the morning. The combined energy is moderate at 732, but it's junk. The period is only 8 seconds, so it's a weak windswell, and the wind is a messy cross-offshore from the NW. It's just not going to shape up. It's surfable, but it's ordinary. After that, we're looking at a solid week of barely any swell and poor conditions. The energy drops right off into weak numbers in the teens and twenties.
The whole setup at *Freshwater East* is a beach and reef, very sheltered, and it rarely breaks as it is. It's a beginner spot, but with the swell so tiny and the wind so often on it, there's nothing to get excited about. Honestly, with the significant northwest winds and the poor quality of the surf, this stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer if you're desperate for a fix.
The whole second week is just as grim. A few days with a little bit of wind, like the 28th and 29th, but the swell is either too small or the wind is too strong. It's a long, flat, and frustrating outlook. Blank runs like this are pretty normal for this spot, so don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
