The Lowdown
Alright folks, let's talk about Freshwater East. I've got to be straight with you: the next two weeks are a tough watch. We're looking at a long stretch of barely-there surf, and I mean a proper drought. The first wave worth even a second look doesn't show up until Saturday the 25th of July, so we're talking about a gap of nearly two weeks of flat, unridable conditions. The guidance is clear: this spot rarely breaks, and the coming days are proving that out.
The water is currently sitting at 64°, which is a good 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a real anomaly, a proper warm spell, but it's not going to help us get wet.
The first sign of life comes on the afternoon of Saturday the 25th. The swell bumps up to 4 ft at 11 seconds from the west, with a combined energy of 310. That's a solid, moderate pulse. The wind is offshore from the west at 19 mph, which is a huge plus. It'll be clean. But this is a beginner-friendly, very sheltered beach and reef break. With the swell at 4 ft, it's on the bigger side for what works here, but it's the only game in town. Don't expect a classic, long-period groundswell; that 11-second period is decent, but for a spot this sheltered, it's a start.
The energy drops off quickly after that. Sunday the 26th has a 3 ft swell from the west, but the wind is a messy cross-shore from the south-southwest at 12 mph, making for a chop. The energy is still moderate (182), but the conditions are just not there. The afternoon is a bit smaller (3 ft) and still cross-shore. By Monday the 27th, the swell is 3 ft, but the wind is cross-offshore from the west-southwest, and it's clean. The combined energy is 104, so it's on the lower end of moderate. The period is down to 8 seconds, so it's a weaker, short-period wind swell.
Truth is, if you're desperate for a paddle, the afternoon of the 25th is your best bet for a clean, wobbly, small wave. The rest of this outlook is a waiting game. For a spot that's this inconsistent, a blank run like this is just how it goes. The forecasts can change, but you'd need a miracle right now.
Rusty.
