The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty.
Straight up: this 16-day window for Freshwater east is a tough one. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead with next to nothing worth paddling out for until late in the run. The swell just isn’t cooperating, and most days are either flat or too wind-affected to get excited about. It’s a rare-breaks setup at a very sheltered beach and reef, and honestly, it lives up to that reputation here.
The first real chance of anything rideable shows up on Thursday, August 29th. That morning, a 8ft swell from the WSW (8 sec period) rolls in with clean offshore winds from the WNW at 16 mph. The combined swell energy is strong at 709, so there’s some grunt behind it. But that size is already into the expert-only zone—over 8ft for the morning session, then dropping to 7ft by the afternoon with 19 mph offshore winds. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions” across the board, so even with decent height, the quality isn’t coming together. For most of us, this one’s a look-and-see.
Another pulse arrives on Thursday, September 3rd. That afternoon we get a stiff 7ft from the WSW (8 sec, combined energy 566) with strong offshore-cross winds from the SW at 28 mph. That’s a lot of wind, though, and the clean-up is questionable—it’s big but messy. Again, this is expert territory and far from consistent.
Between these two dates, there’s nearly a week of flat to tiny surf, mostly under 2ft, and often blown out with onshore or strong cross-shore winds. Not worth a second look.
The water is sitting at 65°F on the first notable day (Thursday the 29th), with a 4°F anomaly—so a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus if you do go in.
Bottom line: no true standout here. The best on offer is the Thursday, August 29th morning with 8ft and offshore wind, but it’s big for most, the break rarely works, and the conditions are still labelled poor. If you’re an expert with a big wave board and low expectations, it might be worth a look. For everyone else, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
