The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Gotta be honest with you, this stretch is a real bummer for Forjos. This break is a beginner-friendly, super consistent spot that usually handles a good S swell, but the wind is just ruining everything for the next 16 days. The onshore and cross-onshore breeze is relentless, chopping up even the decent groundswell. The water temp is about 80°F, which is normal for this time of year.
We kick off on Tuesday, August 25th, with a 4ft ESE swell, but the wind is from the SE at 12 mph and onshore, making for poor surf. The combined energy is moderate (246), but it's junk. This sets the pattern. The swell builds a little, but the wind stays onshore. By Thursday, August 27th, we get a 5ft S swell with a super long 16-second period and strong energy (1427), but the wind is 12 mph from the East, cross-onshore, and it's deemed poor. That's a real heartbreaker—that period would be epic at a point or reef, but it's a total mess.
Friday, August 28th, brings the biggest swell of the first week, 6ft from the S (16s period) with very strong energy (1886). But it's got 16 mph cross-onshore wind and rain showers. It's a write-off for paddle surfing. Honestly, this is a kite surfer's paradise. This pattern of solid swell and bad wind holds through the weekend and into September.
The wind gets even nastier in the first week of September, sometimes hitting 25 mph, with a nasty cross-shore chop. The swell drops to around 3ft to 5ft with short 8-second periods, which is just weak, choppy windswell. The energy readings drop into the low hundreds.
Into the second week, around September 5th, we see a 5ft S swell on Saturday, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore again. On Sunday, September 6th, there's a 4ft S swell with a 10-second period and moderate energy (480), but it's the same story: 16 mph cross-onshore wind. The last days, into September 8th and 9th, show a 7ft ESE swell peaking on Tuesday the 8th, with a 7-second period and moderate energy (611). That's a big, messy, short-period wave blown out by onshore wind.
The bottom line: There is no standout session. The wind is the enemy. The only tiny glimmer is the afternoon of August 26th, with a 4ft S swell and a 15-second period, and the wind is lighter, but it's still a "marginal" call. For a beginner spot like Forjos, it's just not worth it. Because this spot is usually consistent, this is a tough run, but it happens. Forecasts can change, so keep your fingers crossed.
Rusty.
