The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for our local stretch.

Overall, the pattern is a long, frustrating wait. Forjos is the only spot on the radar, but the first week and a half is a write-off. We’re looking at days of moderate cross-onshore winds and choppy, poor surf conditions right through to the 7th of September. The swell is mainly from the east and southeast, with short periods between 7 and 9 seconds, and combined energy stays moderate (228 to 724). Honestly, it’s a grim stretch—not much a surfer can do with that.

The one bright spot comes late in the run. On the morning of Tuesday the 8th of September, we see a pulse of proper groundswell from the south with a 14-second period and combined energy hitting 1053 (moderate to strong). The swell is 4ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore at 12 mph, making it a marginal call. That’s the best we get, but it’s not clean. The afternoon of the 8th jumps to 6ft from the south at 13 seconds, but again, the wind messes it up. The same pattern holds through the 10th with south swell, long periods up to 16 seconds, and combined energy staying strong (over 1000), but the cross-onshore wind never lets off.

The real standout to keep an eye on is the morning of Friday the 11th of September. We’ve got 5ft south swell at a very long 17 seconds, combined energy 1423, and the wind eases to a 12 mph cross-onshore. It’s only rated marginal, but that’s the closest we get to a clean window. The afternoon of the 11th looks even better on paper: 5ft south swell, 16 seconds, and for the first time the wind turns onshore (ESE at 9 mph). That’s still not ideal, but it’s the best wind we’ll see all period. Given the long period, this south swell is best suited to a point or reef setup, but Forjos is exposed to the south and is a very consistent beginner spot. With crowds sometimes, it won’t be empty. Water temp is 80°F, which is about 2°F warmer than normal for this time of year—nice and warm.

From the 12th onward, the swell drops back and the cross-onshore winds return, ending the run with a whimper. So, if you’re hanging for a wave, the 11th of September is your best bet, but keep expectations tempered. The long forecast makes it promising but less certain.

Rusty.
