The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
This is a tough stretch for Forjos. Over the next 16 days, there’s not one single session that I can truly recommend. The onshore wind is relentless, coming from the ESE to SE, and it’s just killing every bit of wave quality. The first week is a write-off with scores of zero across the board. It’s not until the morning of Friday, July 31st that we even see a glimmer of something, and even that’s a marginal call with a risk of thunderstorms and cross-onshore wind. The swell is there from time to time – by Saturday, August 1st, we’re looking at 6 ft in the morning from the ESE, but with 16 mph onshore wind, it’s going to be a mess.
The best chance for surfable conditions in terms of pure wave height comes around Sunday, August 9th. We’ve got a long-period S swell of 6 ft, period hitting 13 seconds, and the combined energy is massive at 1330 (moderate to strong wave energy). That’s proper groundswell potential. The problem? The wind is still coming from the ESE at 16 mph and it’s onshore. For Forjos, that’s going to mean lumpy, choppy conditions. For an exposed beginner spot like this, that’s not fun paddle surfing. In fact, with that much swell and persistent cross-onshore wind, this setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than for us poor paddle surfers.
Water temperature is 80°F, which is about average for the time of year with a 1°F anomaly – nothing unusual there. But for the rest of the outlook, you’re looking at consistent onshore flow, short-period windswell, and poor surf conditions. There’s a long gap from now until Friday, July 31st with no recommendations. After that, it’s still all poor. If you’re desperate, the very end of the window on August 10th has a 5 ft SSE groundswell but again, wind is onshore. Forjos (Portugal) is just not on this time.
