The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the 16-day outlook for Forjos.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The finder didn't give me a single recommendation across the whole 16 days, and the guidance file backs that up. It’s one of those blank runs that’s more normal for this area when the conditions just don't line up. The first few days, from Tuesday the 4th of August right through the weekend, the swell is hanging around 3 ft to 5 ft but it’s all short-period ESE windswell, mostly coming in at 8 seconds – that’s just junky, weak stuff. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore from the SE and E, blowing at 9 to 16 mph, which is going to chop it up and make it messy. The combined energy is moderate, hitting 518 (moderate wave energy) on Tuesday morning, but it’s all for nothing with those winds. You’d be fighting a losing battle out there.

The pattern doesn’t let up. There’s a gap of a few days here with no real hope. Then on Wednesday the 12th, we get a similar story – 4 ft to 4 ft of ESE swell at 8 seconds, but again cross-onshore winds from the SSE at 12 mph. The energy is there (411-430), but the quality isn’t. It’s just not worth paddling out for.

Now, I’ll be honest, the only thing that catches my eye is a long way out. On Saturday the 15th of August, we see a spike in the charts. The swell jumps to 5 ft to 6 ft from the S, with a period of 14-16 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell – very long period, which will have some real energy and shape. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1360-1367 (strong wave energy). But here’s the catch: the wind is still cross-onshore from the ESE at 9 mph, and the guidance calls it “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” For a beginner spot like this, that 5 ft-6 ft swell is getting a bit too big and the S direction isn’t ideal for the optimum S swell direction. The long period will make it break a bit straight here, and the wind will keep it bumpy. It’s promising, but with that wind and the tide question, it’s a long shot that’s just not reliable.

The rest of the run into the second week stays flat or poor, with small S swells and cross-onshore winds. Honestly, for the next 16 days, I’d say leave the board in the car. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with all that onshore wind and short-period chop. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.

Rusty.
