The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Forjos over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with ya – it’s a tough stretch. There’s a big ol’ gap of poor conditions right at the start, so don’t bother paddling out for the first several days. We’re looking at a long dry spell until things start to show a little life around the end of the first week and into the second.
Right off the bat, from Monday the 10th through Thursday the 14th, it’s mostly onshore slop. Wind’s blowin’ straight on or cross-on, and the swell’s short-period, weak, and messy. The combined energy is pretty limp, sitting in the hundreds – nothin’ to get excited about. Water temp is sittin’ around 80°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.
Now, things finally get a bit interesting by Saturday the 15th. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the south with a solid 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy pushes well over 1000 (1091), so there’s some real push behind it. But here’s the kicker: the wind is just light cross-shore in the morning, which is the best we’re gonna get. For a beginner-friendly, very consistent break like Forjos, that’s about as good as this forecast gets. Keep in mind though, that long period groundswell can make the waves a bit walled and straight at a beach setup, but with the light wind it’ll still be rideable. You might find a few others out, as crowds are sometimes around, but nothing crazy.
Sunday the 16th sees a bit more size – 5ft from the south – but the wind shifts to a moderate cross-onshore, so it gets choppier. The energy’s still high (1347), but the surface texture will be a mess. Not a standout.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Monday the 17th all the way through to the end of the run on the 25th, it’s almost entirely poor surf with moderate cross-onshore winds and dropping swell energy. A couple of mornings around the 22nd show some size – 5ft to 6ft from the south – but the wind is cross-on and the conditions are marginal at best. That’s big enough that it might be too much for beginners, and the chop will make it ugly for everyone.
Honestly, the best bet in this whole 16-day window is Saturday morning, August 15th. That’s your one real window: 5ft south swell, long 14-second period, and just a light breeze. Forjos will have some shape, and it’ll be clean enough to enjoy. After that, it’s a waiting game. The forecast can always change, but right now, this stretch is more about watchin’ than paddlin’.
Rusty.
