The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's get straight into it.
The action is all at Forjos. The water is sitting at about 80°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of the year, so you'll be comfy in boardies.
Right out of the gate, we've got a solid pulse of swell. Sunday afternoon the 16th sees a clean 6ft southerly groundswell, and the wave energy is pumping hard with a reading of 1511. The wind is onshore, but the sheer size of the swell means there'll be some juice in the water. This one is a standout, but it has its caveats. That period is 14 seconds, which is long. For a spot like Forjos, that can make it a bit too straight for an easy paddle, and honestly, the wind will chop it up.
Monday the 17th through to the end of that week is a write-off. It’s onshore, rainy, generally messy, and the conditions are poor. The wave energy is moderate at best, dropping off to low numbers. You're better off staying home.
Now, here's where things get interesting for the patient surfer. We are looking at Saturday morning the 22nd of August. This is the best bet in the entire window. The swell is smaller, coming in at 4ft from the east with a short period of 7 seconds, so it won't have heaps of grunt (energy 204). BUT, the wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the NNE at just 9 mph. That spells clean, workable waves. The forecast actually says "expect good surf conditions." For a beginner-friendly, very consistent break like Forjos, this is your window.
After that little gem, it's back to the grind. From Saturday afternoon through to Monday the 31st of August, the wind turns cross-onshore and onshore again. The swell stays between 3ft and 7ft, but the quality is just poor. There are a couple of marginal calls on Saturday the 29th, but nothing to get excited about with a steady onshore breeze.
So, to wrap it up: the only window worth paddling out for in the next 16 days is the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August. It's not going to be huge, but it'll be clean and fun for everyone. The rest of the time, it's a waiting game.
