The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Forjos.

First off, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. There’s no real call to get in the water. The wind is a constant problem, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is messy and weak. The wave energy is moderate at best, topping out around 477 (moderate) on the 4th of August, but it’s paired with that poor onshore wind, so it’s choppy and blown out. The swell is a short-period 7-8 seconds, so it’s just windswell junk. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing weird there.

We’ve got a long, quiet gap. From the 1st of August all the way through to the 12th of August, there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is always from the east or southeast, and it’s either onshore or cross-onshore, messing up the surface. You’ll see a few small windows of “marginal” surf on the 6th of August morning (0.8m, 3 ft, cross-on) and the 13th of August afternoon (1.0m, 3 ft, onshore), but that’s a “maybe if you’re desperate” kind of deal.

Now, the one flicker of hope comes on the 16th of August. That Sunday afternoon, we’ve got a 1.4m (5 ft) swell from the ESE with a 12-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, and the energy jumps right up to 1057 (strong). The wind is still a cross-onshore from the ESE, but at 9 mph it’s a gentle breeze, so it won’t be totally perfect. Still, with that longer period, the waves will have more shape and push, so it’s the best option in the whole forecast. The setup is a beach break, so a long-period swell like this can be a bit tricky – it might close out or be a bit racey – but it’s your best shot for a wave. This is the one to watch, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on the forecasts.

Overall, it’s a tough run. Most of the time, the swell is small and the wind is wrong. The 16th of August is the standout, but it’s not a guarantee. If you’re desperate, you might get a few on the 13th morning (1.3m, 4 ft, cross-on, moderate energy) but it’s marginal. Patience, my friends.

Rusty.
