The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, 'cause I've had a good look at the charts for Forjos, and it's a bit of a tough one.

Looking at the whole 16-day window, the pattern is stubborn. We've got persistent onshore and cross-onshore winds, mostly from the east and southeast, hammering the coast. The swell's coming from the ESE and SE, but it's got that local, short-period windswell feel to it most of the time. The energy levels bounce around a bit, hitting a moderate 467 (in the middle of the run) and then a stronger 648 on the 23rd of September, but the wind just won't cooperate to make anything of it. It's a frustrating outlook.

Forjos, it's a beginner-friendly spot, very consistent in terms of swell, but this run is all about poor surf conditions. The water temp is doing its usual thing for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.

Let's break it down day by day, starting from Wednesday the 16th of September. Wednesday morning sees 4ft of ESE swell, with a period of 8 seconds, but that cross-on easterly wind at 12 mph ruins it. Choppy. Wednesday afternoon is the same story with 4ft. Thursday the 17th is more of the same, with rain showers and onshore winds in the morning. The whole first week is just a write-off, honestly.

We get a pulse of swell on the 18th and 19th, with heights hitting 5ft to 6ft, and energy jumping to 467 and 570. The trouble is, the period drops to 7 seconds – that's proper short-period, messy windswell – and the wind is directly onshore from the SE at 16-19 mph. The surf quality is poor.

The following week, from the 21st through to the end of September, it's a rinse-and-repeat pattern. Swell hanging around 4ft to 5ft, always from the ESE or E, and the wind never truly goes offshore. It's always cross-on or cross-shore, with the energy levels fluctuating. On the 23rd of September, the energy peaks at 648, with a period that stretches to 12 seconds for the afternoon, but the wind is still cross-on at 16 mph. It’s a shame.

Even into the first of October, the last day in the forecast, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell with an 11-second period, but the wind is still cross-on.

Honestly, for the entire 16-day window, I can't pick a standout. There just isn't one. The wind and swell direction never line up to give us a clean, glassy window. For a beginner spot like this, the swell heights are perfectly manageable, but the conditions just aren't there. If you're desperate, you could look at a 4ft day with an 11-second period, but the cross-on wind will still make it a bumpy ride. This setup, with the persistent onshore wind and poor surf quality, looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.

It's a frustrating run, but it won't stay this way forever. Forecasts change. Hang in there.

Rusty.
