The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Forjos for the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough run. The wind is set to be a real pain, and the waves are just not lining up for a clean paddle. We’re looking at a long stretch of messy, choppy conditions with hardly a window for a proper session.
The forecast kicks off on Saturday, 22 August, but it’s not one to get excited about. We’ve got a small 2ft swell from the SE with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is a measly (97), and with a cross-on breeze from the East at 12 mph, it’s just choppy and poor. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year.
This same pattern carries on through the end of August and into the first week of September. The wind stays stubbornly cross-on or onshore, the swell height bounces between 2ft and 5ft, and the period is stuck around 7 to 8 seconds. The energy values climb a bit, hitting a moderate (297) on the 25th, but the onshore wind keeps it all messy. It’s a real shame.
We get a glimmer of something different on Wednesday, 26 August. A long-period groundswell from the South shows up with a 16-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong (623), but the swell is still tiny at 2ft to 3ft. The wind is still a gentle cross-onshore, so it’s choppy. The forecast calls it marginal, and honestly, that’s being kind. It’s a tease.
The 27th of August sees the biggest swell of the whole period, with a 6ft south groundswell. The energy is very strong (1,804), and the period is a very long 17 seconds. But again, the wind is cross-on. This is a setup that would be far more interesting for kite surfing than for a paddle surfer. The size is already getting into expert territory, and the wind is just going to make it a battle.
From the 28th of August right through to the end of the forecast on the 6th of September, it’s a depressing repeat. The swell is mostly from the East, 5ft to 6ft, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the wind is relentless. It’s all read as “poor surf conditions” or “marginal” at best.
There are no standout days here. This is a blank run. Forjos is a very consistent break, so it’s a bit of a shock to see such a long gap with nothing to recommend. The onshore wind just kills it. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, save your energy and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
