The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break it down for Forjos. It’s a bumpy ride ahead, with a lot of onshore and cross-onshore winds making the surf messy. There’s swell, but it’s a fight to find a clean one.
We kick off on Saturday, August 8th. There’s a bit of swell, 4ft from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds, but the wind is a cross-shore breeze from the NE. It’s only marginal, with a combined energy of 438 (moderate). The morning might give you a few, but the afternoon turns into a complete mess with a strong cross-onshore wind and the swell backing off.
Sunday, August 9th, through to the end of the following week is pretty much a washout. A steady onshore wind from the SE or SSE, and the swell is a mix of short-period ESE and longer-period S swell. The energy builds—you’ll see values like 665 (moderate) and 795 (moderate) on the 12th and 14th—but the wind is too raw to make it worth your time. The conditions are all “poor” or “marginal.”
Here’s the one glimmer. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. Look at Saturday, August 16th, in the morning. The swell is 5ft from the S with a long period of 14 seconds, giving a combined energy of 1096 (strong). That’s some serious groundswell power. The big difference is the wind: a light cross-shore breeze from the NE. For Forjos, that’s as clean as it’s going to get in this forecast. The waves will be a bit fat and straight due to the long period at a beach break, but for a local who knows the sandbanks, it’s the only window with decent shape. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
With the persistent onshore winds and steady swell, Forjos is going to be a choppy, blown-out mess for most of the offer. Honestly, for the bulk of the 16 days, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The consistent swell and strong winds are a kite’s dream, but for us, it’s a waiting game.
The blank run from the afternoon of the 8th through to the 15th is a long, dry spell. The 16th is the only real highlight, but it’s a week out, so keep your hopes up that the wind plays ball. After that, it’s back to the same old onshore slop.
Rusty.
