G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, lookin’ at the charts for the next couple of weeks and, honestly, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. We’ve got one spot on the radar – Forjos – but the conditions are gonna be messy for most of it. The water’s sittin’ at a warm 80°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first bit of surf worth paddling out for is on Saturday the 11th of July. We’re lookin’ at some SSE swell around 4ft, with a solid 13-second period pumping a moderate amount of energy (combined energy of 697). The wind’s coming out of the east at 9 mph, which is a cross-on breeze – not ideal, it’ll leave the surface a bit choppy and lumpy. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the best we’ve got early on. Forjos is a beginner-friendly, very consistent beach break, and it’s exposed to the south swell. Crowds can pop up sometimes, but with the average conditions, it might not be too packed. The wave comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” so keep that in mind.
Into Sunday the 12th, the swell drops to 3ft and the wind picks up a touch, making it even worse. By Monday and Tuesday, we’re down to small, weak stuff with a moderate cross-shore breeze – not worth your time.
Then, from Wednesday the 15th, there’s a stormy pattern moving in. We’ve got afternoon on the 15th with 3ft and easterly onshore wind, but the real drama starts Thursday the 16th of July. That morning a big southerly swell hits 7ft, but with a short, weak 8-second period – that’s a lot of lumpy, chunky water. The wind is a fresh 19 mph from the southeast, straight onshore, and the combined energy is a strong 1161. This is expert-only territory size-wise, but the quality is gonna be ugly – poor surf conditions across the board.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th keep that same theme: big swell (8ft and 7ft), strong onshore winds, and heavy energy readings (2348 and 1891). This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddling day – honestly, it’s a mess.
After that, from the 20th of July right through to the 26th, we see a pattern of chest-to-head-high swell (5ft to 7ft) but the period drops to a short 8 seconds. The wind stays onshore from the southeast at 9-16 mph. The energy readings hover between 286 and 541 – moderate at best. It’s a long stretch of marginal, choppy surf. No standouts, no clean days. The whole second week is a write-off for quality.
So, the only time to even consider a paddle is Saturday morning the 11th of July, with that 4ft SSE groundswell and decent period. It’s not perfect, but it’s the pick of a bad bunch.
Stay tuned, though – forecasts change.
Rusty.
