The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you straight up: Forjos is in a bit of a dry spell. Over the next 16 days, the forecast is a solid run of poor surf conditions with no standout sessions. The water’s sitting at 80°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your arse off waiting for something that ain’t coming.
The pattern kicks off on Sunday the 6th of September with a tiny 3 ft S swell, but it’s getting hammered by a 16 mph cross-onshore wind out of the ENE. That’s choppy, messy, and not worth paddling out for. Monday stays in the same boat – a bit more size around 4 ft on Monday morning, but the wind’s still cross-onshore and the period’s a short 8 seconds. Not much to get excited about.
Tuesday the 8th through to the end of the first week is more of the same: 3 ft to 6 ft of swell, mostly from the ESE, but the wind’s either onshore or cross-onshore, and the periods are short, mostly around 7 to 8 seconds. The combined swell energy does jump up into the moderate range – hitting 675 on Thursday the 10th – but with that onshore wind, it’s just lumpy and poor. The 6 ft on Thursday morning is too big for beginners anyway, and with the wind ruining it, it’s a write-off.
Heading into the second week, from the 13th onwards, the story doesn’t change much. You get a few moments with longer-period swell – like a 16-second groundswell on Saturday the 12th with 3 ft from the S, and a 15-second one in the afternoon – but the cross-onshore ENE wind at 12 to 16 mph keeps it junky. That kind of long-period energy would be better at a point break or reef, but Forjos is exposed and the wind’s all wrong. The combined energy’s in the moderate range (up to 822), but it’s wasted.
By the 18th and 19th of September, we’re seeing 5 ft to 6 ft from the ESE with short 7-second periods and onshore to cross-onshore winds. That’s heavy, choppy, and only for the brave or the inexperienced kite surfers – honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The week closes out on the 21st with a 2 ft S swell and a 16-second period, but the wind’s still cross-onshore at 12 mph, so it’s another no-go.
There’s a gap of no decent surf right through the whole 16 days. Forjos is a beginner-friendly break that’s very consistent, but when the wind’s blowing like this, it’s not offering anything. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, but with conditions this poor, you’ll probably have the place to yourself. That’s not a good sign. Keep an eye on the charts – it tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
