The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Forjos.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’re stuck in a nasty pattern of onshore and cross-onshore winds, mostly from the ESE and SE, blowing at 9 to 12 mph. The swell is coming from the same direction, short period stuff around 7 to 8 seconds, and the combined energy is weak, sitting between 130 and 250 (weak energy). The water temp is a warm 80°, which is about average for this time of year, but that’s about the only bright spot. The surf is just poor, choppy and messy. Honestly, from Thursday the 23rd of July all the way through to Sunday the 2nd of August, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a solid ten-day stretch of no-go.

But hold on, because things finally take a turn on Monday the 3rd of August. The morning session is the standout of the whole outlook. Forjos wakes up with a glassy, clean surface thanks to a light NE breeze at just 3 mph. The swell is a solid 6 ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps up to 446 (moderate wave energy). The conditions are described as "glassy", and the overall forecast is good. This is the one to aim for. The crowd situation is "sometimes", so you might see a few others out, but for this spot, that’s not a big deal.

Now, as we head deeper into the first week of August, the consistency picks up a bit, but the wind messes it up again. Monday afternoon turns cross-onshore, and Tuesday the 4th of August morning has a bigger swell at 6 ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds and energy at 522 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is light and cross-shore, making it a marginal call. The rest of that week and into the next is plagued by those pesky 9 to 12 mph onshore winds again, keeping the surf poor. The swell energy stays high, between 400 and 550 (moderate wave energy), but without clean wind, it’s just a messy, choppy ocean.

So, to sum it up: save your energy for the morning of Monday the 3rd of August. That’s your best bet. The rest of the window is a write-off for a paddle surfer unless you’ve got a kite and a death wish with that onshore wind.

Rusty.
