The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Look, I'm gonna level with you – right now, the surf is pretty much dead. We've got a long stretch of minimal energy and small conditions, so don't rush to grab your board. The first real swell that's worth a mention doesn't show up until August 10th, so you've got over a week of tiny waves to sit through.

Let's start from the top. Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th are a write-off. Swell is a measly 1 ft from the ESE, with weak combined energy (only 18 and 36). Winds are offshore and clean on the mornings, but the waves are just too small to surf. Thursday through to the end of the next week stays tiny, with heights between 1.0 ft and 1 ft. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about 1° cooler than the yearly average – nothing crazy, just a little fresh for this time of year.

Now, we finally get a pulse on the Monday morning of August 10th. That's the only window that could be something. Flat Rock sees a chest-high 3 ft swell from the ENE, with the combined energy hitting a moderate 166. That's the highest energy of the whole run. And the wind? It's a fresh 19 mph offshore from the NW. That means clean, groomed faces. The only hitch is that the swell direction is ENE, while this reef needs it from the NE to be at its best, so it won't be perfect. Still, it's the best we've got. For a short while on Monday morning it might be rideable for the keen crew. After that, it drops back to tiny nothingness for the rest of the 16 days.

So, here's the bottom line: there's one solitary standout morning on August 10th at Flat Rock. The swell is small but clean, with a 9-second period and good offshore wind. The rest of the outlook is a total snoozefest. Don't hold your breath.

Rusty.
