The Lowdown
Rusty here again. Let's break this down in feet and miles per hour.
The story is the same: tiny surf for the next two weeks at Fernald Point. We start off with a real flat spell. From Sunday, August 23rd, right through to the morning of Friday, August 28th, the swell is barely a ripple. We're talking 1ft to 2ft of short-period, weak energy coming from the south-southwest. The wind is a light cross-onshore breeze at 6 mph, so the water will look messy, not clean. It's a tough time to be a paddle surfer; honestly, this stretch is more suited for a kite than a surfboard. The water temperature is 70°, which is a massive 7° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's very unusual, so you might not need a full suit, but you definitely won't need a wave.
Now, Friday the 28th afternoon shows a tiny shift. The energy jumps a bit, but we're still looking at a poor surf condition with a cross-shore wind. It's not until Saturday the 29th that we see a glimmer of hope. The afternoon session on Saturday is the best of a bad bunch. The swell is still small at 2ft from the SSW, but the wind swings to a light cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph. The comment says "expect good surf conditions" and the wave state is "clean." The energy is moderate. It won't be big, but if you want a longboard and some glassy lines, this is your window. This is the standout in a very quiet period. The period is a long 16 seconds, which means it's a proper groundswell, so those lines will be smooth and fat, perfect for the point break setup. Crowds are likely here, but with conditions this marginal for so long, you might get lucky.
After that little burst of hope on the 29th, we slide right back into the doldrums. Sunday the 30th through to Monday, September 7th, is a long stretch of tiny, weak, and cross-onshore slop. The swell height hangs around 1ft to 2ft, and the energy is weak to moderate. The wind stays light and cross-onshore, killing any chance of quality. There are a couple of marginal moments on September 4th and 5th where the energy climbs, but the waves are still small and the conditions are described as "marginal." September 7th afternoon has a glassy moment with a 16-second period, but at 2ft it's still a very flat day.
Fernald Point is a rare-break spot, so a long flat spell like this isn't unusual. Don't hold your breath. The Saturday the 29th afternoon is the only real call of the entire 16 days. It's a tiny window, but if you're keen, that's your best bet for a clean, tiny wave.
Rusty.
