Table - best surf conditions forecast for Fernald Point over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've stared at the charts for Fernald Point, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a very quiet 16 days ahead. This spot is a point break that rarely breaks, and this forecast shows exactly why. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf with mostly cross-onshore winds, so don't get your hopes up for any real sessions.
The first real chance of anything decent is a long way off, on Sunday the 19th of July. There's a window in the afternoon that looks promising. The swell bumps up to 0.9m coming from the S, with a period of 16 seconds, which is nice long-period groundswell. The best part is the wind is forecast to go glassy, dead calm. That's a major positive – it'll be clean as a whistle. The combined energy is strong at 603, so there's some grunt in the water. But remember, this is a point break that rarely breaks, so it's a bit of a gamble whether it'll actually line up. The water temp is about 65°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That's the only standout in the whole run.
Before that, from the 8th of July right through to the morning of the 19th, it's a write-off. We're looking at tiny swell, mostly 2ft to 3ft, with periods that are either long or dropping off, but the wind is a constant cross-onshore. The wave energy is low, mostly under 300 (375 on the 8th, but the conditions are still poor). It's a solid 11-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
After that Sunday afternoon window, it goes back to poor conditions. The 20th and 21st have slightly bigger swell (3ft to 3ft), but the wind swings back onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is moderate. The confidence is low for anything beyond that Sunday. So, if you're a beginner, the swell never gets above 5ft, so it's safe, but there's almost nothing to ride. For the experts, there's that one Sunday afternoon where it might just line up with that glassy wind. It's a rare spot, so if it works, it'll be a treat.
Rusty.
