The Lowdown

Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim stretch. The whole 16-day run is looking flat and weak for Fernald Point. There’s no surf now, and we’ve got a dry spell ahead. The first thing that even looks like a wave doesn’t show up until the afternoon of Saturday, July 25th, and it’s barely a ripple. From now until the 25th, it’s a full week of tiny, poor-quality slop. The combined energy is weak, with numbers mostly between 100 and 300 (158 to 289), which is just sad. The wind is a constant cross-onshore, messing up any hope of a clean face.

The one little blip that might be worth a look comes around Saturday, July 25th into the next week. The swell is from the SSW, but it’s still tiny, only 0.7m to 0.9m (that’s 2ft to 3ft). The swell period is around 13 to 14 seconds, so there’s some long-period groundswell push behind it. The combined energy climbs to 742 on the afternoon of the 25th, which is moderate. The problem is the wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore from the SW, so the quality is just ‘marginal.’ It’s not clean, but it’s the best we’ll get.

The best chance, if you can call it that, is from Monday, July 27th to Wednesday, July 29th. The swell holds at 0.6m to 0.8m (2ft to 3ft) from the SSW, with periods of 16 to 19 seconds. The combined energy is solidly in the moderate range, from 356 to 546. The wind is still light and cross-onshore, but it’s light enough that the surface might only have small ripples, not a full chop. It’s not classic, but it’s the most energetic and rideable window we’ve got. Since it’s a point break, those long-period swells (over 15 seconds) can really line up and give you some nice long walls if the direction holds.

After that, from July 30th onward, the energy drops off fast, back into the poor zone. The last day, August 2nd, is back to nearly nothing.

So here’s the call: aim for the late morning sessions on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of July. The waves are small, the wind is just okay, but it’s the only game in town. If you’re a beginner, the swell is under 1.5m (5ft), so it’s fine, but the long period will make the lulls longer. For experts, it’s too small to get excited about. Don’t expect perfection, but it’s a chance to get wet.

Rusty.
