G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Farol is a tough one. There’s no good time to paddle out. The whole stretch is just a run of poor surf conditions, so let’s break it down.
Right now, through to Saturday, July 4th, we’ve got a small 4ft ENE swell with a short, weak 6-second period. The wind is a cross-onshore breeze at 12 mph, making for choppy, messy conditions and a weak combined energy reading of just 102. The water is 84°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
That sets the tone for pretty much the entire first week. From Saturday afternoon through to Thursday, July 9th, the swell stays tiny – 3ft to 4ft – and the period never gets above 6 seconds. The wind is consistently onshore or cross-onshore, blowing at 12–19 mph, keeping the surface lumpy and uninviting. The combined energy dips into the 37–79 range for most of those afternoons, which is weak. There’s nothing here worth chasing. Even with the swell nudging up to 5ft on Friday, July 10th, and into the weekend of July 11th–12th, the wind remains a problem: cross-onshore mornings and onshore afternoons. The period is still a short 6 seconds, and the energy, while a bit better at 131–153, is still all tied up in short-period chop. The break is exposed, but the swell direction from ENE is onshore, so it’s not working.
The second week doesn’t get any better. From Monday, July 13th, through to Saturday, July 19th, the story barely changes. Swell sits between 3ft and 5ft, with a period of just 4 to 7 seconds. Winds stay cross-onshore in the mornings, switching to onshore in the afternoons. The energy level fluctuates but never breaks into something substantial. Even the morning of Sunday, July 19th, with a 4ft ENE swell and a period of 7 seconds, has a cross-onshore wind ruining the shape. The combined energy of 151 is the highest of the entire period, but with that wind, it’s just more messy, bumpy ocean.
Farol is a beginner-plus spot that is fairly consistent, but this entire 16-day window is a dud. The conditions are poor for paddling. The strong onshore wind and weak, short-period swell mean the setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. We’re looking at a full 16-day gap with no recommendations.
Rusty.
