The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s happening around Farol.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run. The water temp is sitting at 83°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it feels like a bathtub. But the problem is the wind. For the next couple of weeks, it’s locked in from the east and northeast, blowing cross-on or onshore pretty much all day. That’s murdering the wave quality. The swell is weak, with periods around 4 to 6 seconds, so it’s just a short, messy, bumpy windswell. The energy is mostly low, under 100, though there are a few days where it nudges into the moderate range. But even then, the wind is still on it, so it’s not going to clean up.
We start on Tuesday, 14 July. No good. That 3 ft of ENE swell with 12 mph east winds is just cross-on and choppy. Wednesday and Thursday are the same story – 3 ft to 4 ft, but the wind is on it. There’s a slight chance on Friday morning, 17 July, when the wind goes cross-shore from the ESE at 12 mph, but the swell is still weak and short period. It’s rideable, but you’ll be fighting a cross-chop.
Saturday the 18th has a gentle cross-shore breeze in the morning – the best wind we see all outlook – but the swell is only 3 ft with 6 seconds. It’s a session for a longboard if you’re desperate. After that, it’s back to the same grind: onshore winds, weak swell, and poor surf conditions right through the end of the month.
The swell does pick up a little around the 22nd and 23rd of July, with waves up to 5 ft. But the wind stays cross-on or onshore, and the period is still short and weak. The wave shape is just going to be a mess. For a beginner, anything over 5 ft is getting too much here, but that’s not the issue – the issue is the wind. Honestly, the setup at Farol is a beach, with all this onshore wind, it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer right now.
The bottom line: there’s no standout in this whole 16-day window. The surf is consistently poor, with no genuine recommendable sessions. It’s a blank run. The forecast can change, but as it stands, I’d leave the board at home and find something else to do.
