Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming up for Farol.
Truth be told, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a flat spell. The surf is small and the wind is a constant problem, so I’m not going to sugarcoat it. The only real option we have is Farol itself, a beginner-plus friendly spot that is fairly consistent in its exposure to the north. But if you’re looking for a standout day to paddle out, you’ll be waiting a while.
We kick off on Wednesday, July 8, with a tiny, short-period windswell. The morning brings a weak 3 ft swell from the ENE at a snappy 4 seconds, with a cross-on easterly breeze at 12 mph. The combined energy is bottom of the barrel at 44. The water is a warm 84°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the NE at 16 mph, and the swell bumps up just a little to 4 ft from the NE, but the period is still short at 5 seconds. It’s poor, folks. This pattern holds through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – consistent onshore winds in the afternoon, and cross-on winds in the mornings. Swell sizes hover between 4 ft and 5 ft, periods mostly 5 to 6 seconds, and the combined energy climbs into the moderate range (116 to 133) by Thursday and Friday, but the wind just ruins any chance of clean waves. Sunday, July 12, is more of the same. Monday, July 13, sees the morning energy peak at 152 – the biggest combined energy of the whole run – with a 5 ft ENE swell at 6 seconds, but it’s still cross-on and choppy.
The second week is no better. From Tuesday, July 14, right through to Wednesday, July 22, every single session is labeled “poor surf conditions.” The swell is small – 3 ft to 4 ft – with periods rarely getting above 6 seconds. The wind stays stubborn: cross-on in the mornings from the east or east-southeast, and onshore from the north or northeast in the afternoons. There is a brief glimmer on Tuesday, July 21, when the afternoon period stretches to 7 seconds for a 4 ft NE swell, and the combined energy hits 102, but it’s still onshore at 12 mph. Wednesday, July 22, morning offers a slightly lighter 9 mph cross-on ESE breeze with a 3 ft NE swell at 7 seconds, but it’s still “gentle cross-onshore and fairly choppy.” Not exactly a standout.
Honestly, there isn’t a single standout session in this whole 16-day window. The swell is too small, the period is too short, and the wind is never truly offshore or glassy. For a beginner-plus spot like Farol, even the 5 ft swells on Thursday afternoon are blown out by onshore wind. If you’re a kiter or a windsurfer, the setup might look more interesting given the consistent breeze, but for a surfer looking for clean waves, I’d give this one a miss. It’s a long blank run, and that’s just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the car and wait.
Rusty.
