The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for a proper surf. There’s not a single decent session on the cards. The energy is all over the place, and the wind is just never our friend.
The first few days, from Saturday the 18th through to the weekend, we’ve got a weak, short-period swell from the NE. We’re lookin’ at waves around 2 ft to 4 ft, but the wind is a constant cross or cross-on breeze, draggin’ the surface into a mess. The water is a warm 83°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only good thing. The combined wave energy is weak, sittin’ between 50 and 80 (80) – just not enough grunt to push through the chop.
The pattern doesn’t let up. As we head into the next week, from the 20th of July onwards, the swell gets a little push, with heights creepin’ up to 4 ft to 5 ft. The energy does climb into the moderate range at times, like on the morning of the 21st, where it hits 127 (127), but it’s all short period stuff (4 to 6 seconds) and the wind is still on it. The mornings are mostly a cross-on shore, and the afternoons turn directly onshore. It’s just choppy, messy, and poor.
There’s a gap of several days here with absolutely no hope. The whole second week, from the 22nd of July through to the 2nd of August, is the same story. The swell direction stays locked in from the ENE or NE, around 3 ft to 4 ft, with a period that never gets long enough to be exciting. The wind barely lets up – it’s a constant moderate breeze, and the word “poor” is stamped all over every single entry. The energy is mostly weak, occasionally nudging into the low triple digits like 109 (109) or 120 (120), but it’s all wasted on the wrong wind.
Look, Farol (Piaui) is a spot that can handle some swell, but this setup is just cruel. The swell is comin’ from the wrong direction for the break, the energy is too weak to overcome the onshore wind, and the short periods mean the waves are just weak and bumpy. This isn’t an area that stays poor for long, but this run is a dry spell. For paddle surfing, it’s a total no-go. If you’ve got a kite, the constant cross-shore wind might give you something to do, but for a surfboard, you’re better off waitin’ for the next forecast.
Rusty.
