Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks in this part of the world. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. The whole outlook is plagued by lousy winds and weak, messy swell. We’re looking at a run that never gets any good surf quality, so don’t get your hopes up.
The setup at Farol is the only game in town, but right from the get-go, starting Friday morning, 3rd July, it’s poor. The swell is a tiny 3ft from the ENE with a short, weak period of 6 seconds. The energy is barely moderate at 109 (combined energy), and the cross-shore wind from the ESE at 9 mph puts a chop on it. Water is sitting at 84°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
This grim pattern just keeps rolling. Saturday the 4th, Sunday the 5th, all through the week, it’s the same story – cross-onshore winds cranking 12 to 16 mph, choppy faces, and swell heights hovering around 3ft to 4ft. The period stays short, between 4 and 6 seconds. The energy kicks up a little on Sunday afternoon (104) and again Thursday the 9th morning (113), but the onshore wind just ruins any chance of a decent wave.
By the second week, from the 11th of July onward, the swell sticks around 4ft to 5ft, still from the ENE, still with a pathetic period. The wind doesn't let up – still cross-onshore or onshore in the mornings and afternoons. The energy does creep higher, hitting 138 on Sunday the 12th morning and 134 on Tuesday the 14th morning, but the wind keeps it all chopped out and poor.
Honestly, this entire 16-day window is a write-off for a paddle. Those moderate cross-onshore and onshore winds just won’t give us a clean face. If you’re a kiter, this constant cross-onshore wind and bumpy water might look fun, but for a surfer? There’s nothing here to get excited about. I’d stick to the beach chair.
Rusty.
