The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks. Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a bit of a lean stretch. We've got a long gap of nothing worth chasing, so don't bother waxing up for a while.
The first real chance of a wave comes Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. Ersary beach (Barra) will see a 7ft swell pushing in from the WSW with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (746), so there's some grunt there. But look, it's a mixed bag for the average surfer – that's a solid size, around 7ft, which will be pushing it for beginners. The real kicker here is the wind. It's a cross-offshore breeze, so the face will be clean. It's not perfect, but it's the best we've got in this window.
By Wednesday afternoon, the wind swings to a fresh offshore from the East at 22 mph. That'll groom the 6ft SW swell (612 combined energy) nicely. You'll get some clean, lined-up walls, but that offshore breeze can make things a bit tricky on the take-off. For anyone with a bit of experience, this afternoon window is the standout. The water temp is around 59°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
After that brief window, it all goes flat and messy. From Thursday the 20th right through to the middle of the following week, the forecast is a write-off – small, lumpy, and beat-up by onshore winds. You're looking at nearly a full week of waiting.
Things tease us again on Monday the 25th of August. A 5ft SW swell with a 10-second period turns up, but the wind is a screaming cross-offshore near-gale at 31 mph. That's kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing. The water will look like a washing machine.
The tail end of the forecast, around Thursday the 27th of August, offers the most glassy conditions you'll see. Morning shows glassy 2ft surf from the WSW (135 combined energy) and the afternoon is glassy with a 3ft swell from the west (130 combined energy). It's tiny, and the conditions are just 'ordinary', but if you've got a longboard and you're desperate for a paddle, that Thursday morning or afternoon will be the only time you might catch a clean little ripple.
So, to sum it up: if you're a confident surfer, the best bet is Wednesday afternoon, the 19th of August. For everyone else, keep an eye on the forecast, because it's a tough run.
Rusty.
