The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next stretch.
Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet run for the most part. We’re looking at a long patch of small, weak waves, and you’ll be waiting a while for anything that really gets the heart pumping. The first standout I can point you to is shaping up to be a bit of a wait, but it’s worth hanging in there for.
Let’s start with the only real highlight of the whole outlook. Head to Embare on the morning of Tuesday, 28 July. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is about 1°F cooler than average for this time of year, so pretty normal. You’ll see a clean, glassy start with a light breeze from the ENE. The swell is coming from the E at 5ft, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy of all swells here is a solid 390 (moderate wave energy). It’s a bit of a short-period swell, which won’t be the most powerful, but the glassy conditions will make it look a lot better than anything else on offer. The offshore wind is from the N, so it’s a cross-off situation. This is an intermediate spot, and it’s consistent, so you’ll get waves. The crowds are only *sometimes* a problem, so you might have some company, but it’s not a sure thing. This is the best bet, but honestly, with the swell a bit on the smaller side and the period short, it’s more of a fun, clean session than a serious standout.
Before that, the next few days are a write-off. From Saturday, 18 July right through to the morning of Monday, 27 July, there’s barely a ripple worth mentioning. The swell is tiny, mostly 1.0ft to 2ft, and often with a cross-on shore wind. The energy is weak, with values mostly under 100 (up to 237 on the 26th, but that was an onshore wind making a mess of it). You’re essentially looking at a 10-day gap of poor surf conditions. The only small glimmer is the morning of Thursday, 23 July, which is glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft – not enough to get excited about.
Then after the 28th, it tails off again. The morning of Wednesday, 29 July sees a bit of a clean-up with a NNE offshore wind and 3ft swell from the ESE, but the energy is light (120) and the period is short (8 seconds). It’s surfable, but ordinary. The same goes for the afternoon of the 29th – clean, cross-off conditions, but the same small, weak swell.
The very end of the outlook, on Sunday, 2 August, has a bit of a tease. The morning is glassy, with a 13-second period swell from the SSE, but the swell height is only 1ft. The energy is 137 (weak). It’s a long-period groundswell, which would be better suited to a point or reef, but at this size, it’s barely going to break. The afternoon sees a bit more energy (178) and a 12-second period, but the wind goes cross-on and it’s poor.
So, bottom line: the only real window is the morning of Tuesday, 28 July at Embare. It’s clean, glassy, and the biggest swell of the period, but it’s not a classic. Everything else is a battle with small, weak, or poorly-winded surf. Don’t expect much, but if you’re keen, that’s your best shot.
Rusty.
