The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks at Embare.
Alright, straight up, the next week or so is a bit of a struggle. The swell is small, coming from the ESE with a short, weak 8-second period, and the wind is mostly a messy cross or cross-onshore. The wave energy is weak, reading just 242 on Sunday afternoon, and it drops off from there. The water is sitting at 70° with a positive anomaly of 2°, so it's a touch warmer than average for the time of year, which is something but you won't be needing a thick suit.
The pattern stays poor with only brief, tiny windows of glassy conditions, but even then the wave heights are below 3 ft with no real push. There’s a real flat spell from around the 19th through to the 22nd, where the combined energy drops to between 24 and 53, basically nothing.
The first real glimmer shows up on the morning of Tuesday, 25th August. We’ve got a jump in swell to 6 ft from the SSE, with a solid 12-second period, giving us a combined energy of 833 (moderate to strong). The morning has that magic word: *glassy*. The wind is light from the WNW, so it’ll be clean. This is the standout of the whole outlook. The water temp anomaly wasn't recorded for this day, but the conditions look right.
Now, keep in mind, a 6 ft swell is getting a bit meaty for beginners, but it’s not out of control. That long 12-second period means the waves will have good shape and there will be longer lulls between sets, making the paddle out easier. It’s also coming from the SSE, which is close to the optimum S direction.
The afternoon on the 25th gets sloppy, with a strong cross-onshore wind ruining it, so the morning session on Tuesday the 25th is the one to circle in your calendar. The following days drop off in quality again with onshore winds and a drop in swell energy, so don’t expect much else.
Overall, you’ve got one real window of fun, glassy, moderate-sized surf on the 25th of August. It’s worth the wait. The rest is a write-off unless you’re keen for a flat-water paddle.
Rusty.
