The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s brewing at Embare over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, it’s a pretty slow start, and there’s a long dry spell before we finally get a cracker of a day.
Right now, the surf is small and the conditions are just blah. The water temp is sitting at about 67°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The first bit of rideable surf shows up on Thursday 16th July in the morning. We’ve got 4ft of southeast swell coming in at a 10-second period, which is a solid, workable groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the north, so the waves will be clean. That offshore wind is a big plus, making for some nice lines. The combined energy is moderate at 232, so there’s a bit of push. But it’s a small window, and by the afternoon the wind swings cross-on and the quality drops right off.
From Friday 17th July all the way through to Wednesday 29th July, it’s a real struggle. The swell drops below 3ft, the periods get shorter, and the wind is mostly onshore, cross-shore, or just messy. We get a few mornings with a clean offshore breeze, but the waves are just too small to get excited about – mostly 2ft to 3ft with weak energy. There’s a couple of glassy moments on the 21st and 22nd, but the swell is barely there, so it’s more of a paddle than a surf. The combined energy dips into the 30s and 40s on those days, which is very weak.
Then, finally, we get a bit of a pulse. Thursday 30th July brings some life back with 4ft of south swell, 9-second period, and glassy conditions in the morning and afternoon. The combined energy is strong, hitting 336 and 387. It’s surfable, but it’s still just ordinary.
But the real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is Friday 31st July. This is the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a 5ft south-southeast swell rolling in with a very long 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is 658, which is strong. And the wind? Dead calm, glassy all day. Both morning and afternoon are looking excellent. The swell direction is a great match for the break, and with no wind, those waves will be clean and lined up. The only catch is the swell size is just at the 5ft mark, so it’s getting a bit serious for beginners, but intermediate and above will be loving it. Keep in mind that long-period groundswell like this can make beach breaks a bit straight, but at Embare it should handle it well.
So, in short: a lot of flat and ordinary days, but a proper red-letter day waiting for you on Friday 31st July. The rest of the window is a write-off unless you’re desperate for a paddle. Forecasts can change though, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty, signing off.
