The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks at this spot. It’s a pretty flat spell ahead, so let’s not get too excited too early.
The main story is that we’ve got a run of small, clean-ish waves from Wednesday the 15th through the end of that week, but nothing that’s going to have you calling in sick. The combined swell energy sits in the moderate range at best, peaking around 308 on Wednesday afternoon, but the wave heights are just tickling the 4 ft mark and the period is a modest 10 seconds. That’s surfable, sure, but it’s very ordinary – small, short-period SE swell. Wind is the saving grace here: the mornings are looking offshore from the NNE at only 3 to 6 mph, so the face will be clean, especially on the Thursday morning session when it goes glassy. Water temp is sitting at 67°, which is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Honestly, the standout window is the Wednesday morning the 15th through to Friday afternoon the 17th. It’s not big, but it’s the best on offer. Wednesday morning gives you a clean 4 ft from the SE with a 10-second period and light offshore wind. Thursday morning is the pick though – glassy conditions, 4 ft swell, and that offshore air. For a sheltered spot like Embare, that’s about as good as it gets in this quiet stretch. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have company, but with waves this size, it shouldn’t be a battle.
After Friday afternoon, it’s a slow bleed down. By Saturday the 18th, the swell drops to 3 ft, and by Sunday the 19th we’re into the 2 ft and below zone. The combined energy drops to three-digit and then two-digit numbers – weak stuff. From Sunday the 19th all the way through to Friday the 25th of July, it’s basically a flat run with heights barely scraping 2 ft and periods dropping to 8 seconds. Not worth paddling out for.
There’s a brief flicker on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th when the swell bumps up to 5 ft – 5 ft from the S/SSE with 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to 356 and 405, which is moderate, but the onshore wind is strong from the south, up to 16 mph, with rain. That’s a messy, blown-out setup. For a sheltered spot like Embare, it’s just not going to be clean. I’d call that more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Then the final week of July has some interesting long-range signals. On Tuesday the 28th of July, a very long-period groundswell arrives from the S at 13 seconds, with a 4 ft swell and moderate combined energy of 545. The wind is cross-off from the ENE at 9 mph, so it could be clean. That’s promising for a sheltered S-facing spot – the long period will wrap in nicely. But it’s far out, so keep an eye on the charts. The glassy conditions on the morning of the 30th with a 3 ft swell from the ESE also have potential.
So, short story: grab what you can from Wednesday the 15th to Friday the 17th for small, clean waves. The long-range stuff at the end of the month is promising but less certain. It’s a quiet stretch for now, but it won’t stay poor forever.
Rusty.
