Alright, I’ve had a good look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch for anyone looking to get wet around here.
For the area around Dunes Hotel (Miami), the whole 16-day run is looking mostly flat or just plain messy. The combined wave energy stays weak, stuck in the single digits and low double digits for most of it, barely ever getting above a middling reading (like 42 on the 22nd morning, or 90 on the 23rd afternoon), which just isn't enough to get excited about. The surf that does show is small, and on top of that, the wind is often cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy. The water temp is sitting at a toasty 88°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but it's hard to enjoy it when the waves are woeful.
Let’s walk through it. Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July are completely flat, with swell under 3 ft and a horrible 4 to 6 second period, which is just wind slop. Saturday and Sunday are similar – tiny and choppy. The pattern doesn't change much through the next week. We get a couple of glassy moments, like the morning of Thursday 16th July and Friday 17th July, but with only 0.7 ft to 1 ft of swell on offer, it’s barely a ripple. A few mornings around the 19th to 20th look clean with cross-offshore breezes, but again, the swell is so small it’s not worth paddling out for.
By the time we hit the 22nd and 23rd of July, we start to see the swell tick up to 3 ft to 4 ft, with the combined energy finally climbing into the 80s and 90s, but the period is still a short 5 to 6 seconds. That’s just weak, choppy, onshore wind-swell. The wind is straight onshore, so it’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. This isn't the kind of wave you paddle for – honestly, with that onshore wind and those shifty, lumpy conditions, it might be more interesting for a kite surfer than for someone with a surfboard.
To sum it up: there are no standouts. There’s a solid stretch of nothing from the 9th right through the 24th. This area can go through quiet runs, and this is one of them. The forecasts can always change, but for now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
