The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one for surfers. The only spot in the game is Dunes Hotel (Miami), and it’s a sheltered, inconsistent beginners’ wave that rarely breaks. We’re looking at a long dry spell.
Starting from Tuesday, 18 August right through the rest of the month, and into the first days of September, the story is all the same: tiny, weak swell. The wave heights barely register, mostly around 0.3 ft to 2 ft with a combined swell energy that’s weak on the scale (mostly single-digit to low double-digit values, like 5, 12, or 22). The water temp is a warm 87°F with a temperature anomaly of 2°F, which is about average for the time of year.
The wind is often cross-on or cross, making the already small surf look messy. There are a few windows of cleaner conditions – like the morning of Wednesday, 19 August, with a light cross-off breeze, or the morning of Thursday, 20 August, with a very light cross-off wind – but it’s still just ankle-slappers. On Thursday afternoon, 20 August, a brief pulse of 2 ft southerly swell pops up, but with a short period of 4 seconds and a 25 km/h cross wind, it’s no good for a paddle board. That setup, with the wind and small chop, is more of a kite-surfing afternoon than a surf one if you ask me.
The same pattern drags on through the 20th and all the way to the end of the month. You’ll see the occasional long-period swell (e.g., 16 seconds on the morning of 26 August, or 14 seconds on the afternoon of 1 September), but the wave heights are still 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft, so the energy is weak (values like 10 and 27). It’s a tease.
By the time we hit the first two days of September, the swell height nudges up to 2 ft to 3 ft with a combined energy around 44 to 48, which is still moderate at best. The direction is ESE, but the wind is onshore, so it’s a choppy, blown-out knee-high dribble. Even with a period of 14 seconds, the energy is too weak to shape up.
So, what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t a standout. The conditions stay poor through the entire 16-day window. This is more normal for a sheltered spot like this – it tends not to stay poor for long, but right now, forecasts can change, and we just have to wait. For now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
