The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. It’s Rusty here, and I gotta level with you – we’re looking at a real tough stretch ahead. For the whole 16-day window, there’s barely a whisper of a wave worth paddling for around here. The only break on the cards is Dunes Hotel in Miami, and honestly, it’s a beginner-friendly, inconsistent little crumble that’s more of a wading pool than a surf break.
The water temp is sitting at 87°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like bathwater. But that’s about the only highlight.
From now through the end of August and into the first days of September, we’ve got a long, flat run. The swell energy is consistently weak, with readings barely breaking double digits – we’re talking combined energy values between 3 and 29, which is just plain anemic. The swell heights rarely top 2 ft, and when they do, it’s from short-period, wind-driven slop. Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. There is a glimmer of glassy conditions on the morning of Saturday, August 22nd, and again on Sunday, August 30th, but with only 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft of swell, it’s not enough to surf.
Even the bigger energy spike around September 1st and 2nd (with energy hitting 29 and 23 respectively) doesn’t deliver. That’s from short-period NNE swell (6 seconds) with onshore winds – a recipe for closeout mush. The late-arriving easterly swell on September 2nd has a longer period (11 seconds), but it’s still tiny (0.7 ft) and blowing onshore. For the entire forecast, there is not a single standout session. The best advice I can give is to find a hobby for the next couple of weeks. The ocean is on a flat spell, and while forecasts can always change, this one’s looking pretty grim. Stay patient, kids.
Rusty.
