The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this stretch of coastline from Miami is looking pretty flat for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid 16-day window here, but it’s a long, quiet run. The first proper surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until the 21st of July, and even then, it’s not going to get the heart racing. There’s a real gap of nothing until then, so if you’re itching for a wave, you’re going to be waiting.
The water at Dunes Hotel (Miami) is sitting about 87°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year – a bit of a warm bath feeling, but nothing too crazy.
Let’s talk about the best of what’s on offer, and honestly, there’s not much. The standout here is Tuesday the 21st of July. Early morning, we’ve got a little bump of 2ft from the SE, with a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy is weak (17). The wind is a cross-onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but it’s the most energy we see all window. This break is sheltered and inconsistent, so don’t expect a classic session. The swell direction is SE, which isn’t the optimum NE, but it’s what we’ve got. It’s tiny, clean-ish, and the crowd factor is “often,” so expect a few locals out. This is a beginner-friendly wave given the size, but with the inconsistent nature, it’s more about getting wet than getting barrelled.
After that, the 22nd of July morning holds similar 2ft from the SE, but again, cross-onshore wind and weak energy (15). It’s more of the same. The rest of the days are just ankle-biters, with wind chop and barely any push. The 17th of July morning has a little 0.7ft with clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s just too small to ride.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a paddle, this setup is pretty poor. The energy is all in the single digits and low teens, the swell is short-period slop, and the wind is mostly onshore. With the beach setup, this looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a surfer on a foamie. There’s no real stand-out session, so keep your expectations low and maybe save the petrol.
Rusty.
