The Lowdown

Gutted, folks. Right off the bat, I gotta tell you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got next to nothing on the cards for a solid stretch, and it’s looking like a bit of a flat spell for us here.

We’re looking at a run of poor surf conditions that’s gonna last for over a week straight. Day after day of cross-onshore and onshore winds, choppy and lumpy water, and weak, short-period windswell. The energy is just not there. For example, Wednesday morning we’re looking at a combined energy of just 148, and it’s all downhill from there for a while. The swell direction is all messed up for our coastline, coming in from the ENE when we really need it from the N. It’s a proper write-off for the next week or so.

The only spot with any kind of a pulse on the radar is Coqueiros, a reef break that’s exposed to the swell and is fairly consistent. But even there, it’s just not happening. The wind is almost always up, chopping up what little swell there is. Water temp is 83°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but you won't be feeling it while you're getting blown off your board.

Honestly, for the first week and a half, from Wednesday the 5th through to about Sunday the 16th, there are no recommendations at all. It’s a total desert. You’re better off doing something else with your time.

Things start to look slightly more interesting around Monday the 17th. The swell bumps up a little, and we see the combined energy jump into the low 200s on Monday afternoon. But even then, the wind is still a problem and the surf quality is still rated as poor. It’s bigger, but it’s not cleaner. By Tuesday the 18th, it looks like it drops off again.

The only faint glimmer of something a bit more promising is Thursday the 20th. The morning has a moderate cross-onshore wind, and the afternoon sees the swell build again to 6ft from the NE with a combined energy of 212. But it’s still a short-period swell, around 6 seconds, and the wind is still an onshore mess. Coqueiros is a reef, so a longer period swell would be better, but this ain't it.

If the wind ever drops, this spot could be okay. But right now, I’m looking at a whole lot of nothing. The setup looks a lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if you ask me. Keep the hopes up that the forecast changes, but don't hold your breath for anything good.

Rusty.
