The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the same stretch in feet and miles per hour.
Honestly, this is a tough 16-day stretch for Coombesgate Beach. There’s really nothing worth getting excited about; the whole period is a write-off for surf. From Friday, July 17th right through to the end of the month, we’ve got a long, dry spell with no surfable waves on offer. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly messy, and the scores are flat. There’s a gap of about 11 days where you’d be wasting your time even looking at the ocean.
The only real shift comes around the weekend of July 25th and 26th, when the combined energy jumps up a bit to 156 (moderate energy) on the Saturday morning, with a swell of about 5ft out of the west and a 6-second period. That’s a short-period, wind-driven swell, and the wind is cross-onshore from the NNW at 15 mph, so it’s going to be choppy and lumpy. Not clean, not fun. It’s still marked as “poor surf conditions,” and honestly, for a beach and reef setup like this, it’s looking more like a day for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
Sunday the 26th serves up similar numbers, 4ft to 4ft, again with poor wind and a short period. The energy is moderate (103-131), but the quality just isn’t there.
Forget the second week. The best you’ll get is a brief moment on Tuesday morning, July 28th, when the wind goes glassy. But the swell is only 2ft and the period is short, so it’s barely a ripple. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s the cleanest window in the whole outlook. Water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Bottom line: there’s nothing to recommend. Sometimes the runs just go blank, and this is one of them. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Stay salty,
Rusty
