Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coombesgate Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s headed our way. I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The next 16 days don’t have a single standout session, and we’re looking at a pretty flat and blown-out run for the most part.
We’ve got a gap right at the start. The first real swell we see is a tiny pulse, but it’s not worth paddling out for. The whole period from Thursday, July 9th all the way through to the end of the run on Thursday, July 24th is basically one long gap with no real recommendations. The wave energy is dead low, with readings barely cracking 50 (combined energy of all swells directed here sits as low as 8 and only peaks at 58), and the swell heights are tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 2ft. The swell direction is mostly from the W or WSW, which is well off the optimum WNW for Coombesgate Beach.
The only break we’ve got to look at is Coombesgate Beach. It’s a beach and reef setup, fairly consistent, but right now it’s just not showing any life. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 63°, sitting about 4° above average for this time of year, if that's any consolation.
Given the combined energy is all below 100, and swell heights are under 5ft, we’re not even talking about small waves for beginners – we’re talking about almost nothing. The wind is often cross-off or cross-on, but with such tiny swell, it doesn’t matter. The period is usually short, between 4 and 10 seconds, so no real push or shape to speak of. On Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, we see a tiny bump with a 3ft swell from the NW and a 4-second period, but the wind is onshore or cross-on, making it a choppy mess.
Honestly, this is a blank run. For this area, that’s not uncommon. It tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now I’d say leave the boards in the shed. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high ripple, but don’t expect any sort of wave. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent wind and lack of surf.
Rusty.
