The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Truth is, it’s a pretty bleak stretch coming up. We’re looking at a long, dry run with barely a wave worth paddling for. The entire 16-day window is made up of tiny, weak swells, mostly around 0.3 ft to 1 ft, and the combined energy rarely breaks out of double digits – most days it’s sitting well under 100 (like 27, 22, 7), which is about as weak as it gets. The wind is often cross-off or cross-on, which would be fine if there was any power, but there isn’t. You’d be floating around on a lake.
The only spot we’ve got to work with is Coombesgate Beach, a beach and reef setup that’s fairly consistent but not doing us any favours right now. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild to report there.
We start this Wednesday morning, the 15th of July, with a tiny 1 ft swell from the west, period around 10 seconds. The wind is a cross-off from the east at 22 mph, which is a fresh breeze – it’ll keep the surface clean, but with energy at just 27, it’s basically a lake. That pattern of tiny, clean, but powerless surf continues right through the rest of the week and into the next. Thursday the 16th drops to 0.3 ft with a 14-second period from the southwest – that’s a long period groundswell, but there’s no height to do anything with it. Friday and Saturday are the same sad story: 0.7 ft, 0.3 ft, maybe a 2 ft pulse on Saturday afternoon that’s short-period and lumpy with a strong cross-onshore wind.
The whole first week is a write-off. There is no standout. Nothing worth highlighting. The best you could say is that the mornings are often clean, but with swell this small, it’s not surf.
Moving into the second week, things don’t really improve. There’s a slight uptick around the 24th of July (Friday) with a 2 ft swell from the NNW, but the period is a short 4 seconds, and the wind is cross-on or onshore. The energy creeps up to 23 – still weak. By Saturday the 25th, we get a 3 ft swell from the NNW, period 5 seconds, energy hitting 55. That’s the biggest we’ll see, but it’s short-period, onshore wind, and the break is a beach and reef setup. That’s more likely to be a choppy, blown-out mess than anything rideable for a paddle surfer. Might be worth a look for the kite crew if you’re into that.
After that, it drops back to nothing. The 26th and 27th bring rain showers and fresh cross-onshore winds with tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft swells. The last few days of the month are the same – weak, small, and uninspiring.
So, the honest truth: there’s no good surf in this 16-day window. It’s a dead spell. The break is consistent enough, but the ocean just isn’t delivering. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope, but for now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
