G’day, Rusty here. I’ve gotta be straight with you – right now, Coombesgate Beach is looking like a bust. The whole 16-day run is a flat spell. There’s nothing worth paddling out for, and the first recommendation doesn’t even show up until Tuesday morning, July 7th, with a tiny 1ft swell from the west. Even then, it’s tagged as poor surf conditions, and honestly, that theme sticks around.
Let’s walk through it. Tuesday the 7th kicks off with some clouds and a cross-on westerly breeze at 9 mph. The swell is a pathetic 1ft at 9 seconds, with combined wave energy sitting at just 36 (real weak). Water temperature is 62°, which feels a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. Surf quality is poor – no two ways about it. That afternoon, the wind turns onshore, and it’s still rubbish.
Wednesday the 8th starts glassy with a light WNW breeze, but the swell is still only 1ft. It’s clean but tiny. Thursday bumps to 2ft, but the wind is onshore, and the energy creeps up to a measly 43. Friday the 10th, we get a cleaner look with an offshore ENE breeze at 12 mph, and the swell holds at 2ft, period 9 seconds, energy at 57. It’s the best the whole run gets, but it’s still poor surf. Saturday morning gets a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore, but the swell drops back to 1.0ft.
From Sunday the 12th onward, it’s a ghost town. We’re talking swells of 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with combined energy dipping into the single digits (8, 10, 11). The wind is often clean and cross-offshore, but there’s no wave to ride. Towards the end of the second week, around Friday the 17th, we see a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW with a pathetic 4-second period, and it’s still poor. The only glimmer is Monday the 20th, where a 3ft swell from the NNW shows up with a 4-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze – energy at 35. But that period is way too short, and it’s still a poor call.
There are no standouts here. Not a single session breaks into decent territory. For beginners, the swell never even reaches 5ft, so it’s not too big, but there’s just no wave to learn on. If you’re a kiter, the clean offshore winds on the tiny days might give you something, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a long wait. Sometimes an area goes quiet like this, and that’s just the hand we’re dealt.
Keep an eye on forecasts – things can change.
Rusty.
