The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Coombesgate Beach. I gotta be straight with you from the off – it's a tough one. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for the next two weeks, and even then, conditions are far from perfect. The water, by the way, is sitting at 64°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice surprise if you do get in.
The whole outlook is a bit of a bummer, to be honest. Right now and for the next week, the swell height barely gets off the deck, mostly sitting at 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The combined swell energy is, well, weak. We're talking single-digit and low double-digit numbers that just don't get the heart racing. On Saturday the 18th morning we've got a tiny 0.7ft of W swell with a short 8 second period and a gentle cross-offshore breeze (15 km/h) from the ENE that keeps it clean, but there's just not enough water to do anything with. That afternoon the wind swings onshore and it's game over.
We roll through Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… it's the same story. Tiny swells with weak to non-existent energy. The odd morning has a clean look, but you're looking for a wave that isn't really there. The only real change comes Wednesday the 22nd, when the swell ticks up slightly to 2ft in the morning, but it's a cross-onshore wind from the NNW at 25 km/h, making it choppy and lumpy. A classic "don't bother" situation.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are more of the same – tiny, weak and often onshore. Honestly, the pickings are so slim you could count them on one hand.
Now, we get a bit of a pulse around the 25th of July. Saturday morning shows a 5ft swell from the WNW, but it's short period at 7 seconds and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the NW at 20 km/h. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 243, but that onshore wind is going to chop it up. It's a beach and reef set-up, and with those onshore winds, it's looking more like a kite-surfing breeze than a paddle-surfing wave. That afternoon is onshore again and lumpy. This is the closest we get to a standout, but it's a messy one. Sunday the 26th drops back to 3ft and onshore wind again.
Looking further out into the second week, from the 29th of July through to the 2nd of August, we're back to tiny, weak swells. There’s a moment on Wednesday the 29th afternoon where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 2ft. The next morning, Thursday the 30th, it's glassy again, but the swell has dropped to just 0.7ft. A glassy flat spell is a cruel tease. The rest of that stretch is tiny clean conditions with cross-offshore breezes, but there's simply no power in the water.
To sum it all up, the best that Coombesgate Beach offers in this whole 16-day window is a modest, but onshore-mangled, pulse around the 25th of July that's more for the wind sports crew. Otherwise, it's a long wait for a proper wave. The swell just doesn't show up, and when it does, the wind spoils it. We'll be keeping an eye on it – things can change – but for now, the beach is flat and the forecast is quiet. Save the wax.
Rusty.
