The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: looking at the next 16 days for Coombesgate Beach, it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty much a flat, blown-out mess for the whole period, so I’m not going to sugarcoat it. There are no real standouts on offer, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a single session worth paddling out for.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year here—so at least the water’s nice, but that’s about the only silver lining. The combined wave energy is weak, barely cracking double digits for most of the period, with the highest reading being a measly 51 (moderate) towards the end of July. That’s a sign of just how little energy is in the water.
The first few days, beginning Friday the 17th, offer nothing. Tiny 0.7ft swell from the west, with a short 8-second period and onshore or cross-onshore winds. It’s poor surf conditions all the way through. Saturday the 18th sees a slightly bigger 2ft to 3ft swell from the NNW, but it’s short period (4 seconds) and wind is either cross-off or cross-on, making it lumpy and uninviting. A 3ft wave with a 4-second period is just wind chop, not proper surf.
The following week, from the 20th to the 26th, is a real desert. Swell heights barely reach 0.7ft to 2ft, and the wind is consistently onshore or cross-on, often from the NW or NNW at 12–19 mph. The water looks choppy and messy. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Friday the 24th when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 0.7ft with 8-second period—flat, clean, but flat.
Into the end of July and start of August, the swell picks up a little, with readings of 1ft to 2ft, but the wind turns nasty. On the 29th, we’ve got a strong breeze from the west at 25 mph and a risk of thunderstorms. The combined energy hits 51, but with onshore winds and that kind of chop, it’s not worth a paddle. The 30th offers a slight improvement with a cross-off breeze from the east in the morning, but the swell is only 1ft from the WSW with a 9-second period—still well below what you’d want.
Given the persistent lack of size, poor wind direction, and the fact this is a beach and reef setup, the conditions here look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period. For a surfer, it’s a 16-day blank run. But keep in mind, waves can appear on the forecast when you least expect it. For now, I’d save the energy.
Rusty.
