The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at the only game in town for the next 16 days: Coombesgate Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you. This is a grim stretch. There’s a massive gap of nothing good from now until the morning of Thursday, 27th August. For nearly a week, the waves are tiny – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft junk – and while the wind is often clean, the swell just isn’t there. It’s a frustrating wait.
The water temp is sitting at 66° on the 22nd, which is a solid 5° above the norm for this time of year. That’s notably warm, a real blessing for the soul, but it’s cold comfort with no waves to surf.
Things finally start to look a bit more interesting on Thursday morning the 27th. The swell bumps up to 4ft out of the SW, with a combined energy of (165). That’s moderate energy, but it’s a short period, around 8 seconds, so it’s not going to be any kind of groundswell gem. The problem is the wind – it’s blowing cross-shore at 15 mph, bumping it up. Thursday afternoon gets worse with a risk of thunderstorms and 22 mph cross-shore winds. Not your day.
Friday the 28th morning is the first real flicker of hope. The swell pushes 5ft from the WSW with a combined energy of (191). The wind goes light offshore from the SE. That’s just about the only clean window we’ve got. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and weak, but for a beach and reef setup, it might give you a few. Still, the model says the conditions are very ordinary. It’s the best on offer, but that’s a low bar.
The rest of the first week into early September is a write-off. The swell gets bigger – 6ft on Friday afternoon, 7ft on Thursday the 3rd of September – but the wind is consistently cross-onshore or onshore, strong, and messy. The combined energy gets up to (512) on the 3rd, which is strong wave energy, but with 19 mph cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy, blown-out mess. For a beach and reef, that’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, the setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days.
The second week doesn’t get any better. We see 5ft to 5ft swells, but the wind is always on it – fresh cross-onshore or onshore. By the 5th of September, we’ve got a near gale (34 mph!) from the SSW making it a total write-off. The swell drops right back down to 2ft by the 6th. There’s nothing to recommend here.
So, the standout? It’s grim, but I’d say the only window worth a paddle is Friday morning, the 28th of August. The 5ft SW swell with that light offshore wind is the cleanest we’ll see. Don’t expect perfection, but it’s the only chance for a wave.
Rusty.
