Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coombesgate Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta level with you straight up – this is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, flat patch for the next couple of weeks, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
The only spot we’ve got data for is Coombesgate Beach, a beach and reef setup that’s pretty exposed to the swell. The trouble is, there’s barely any swell energy to speak of for the entire 16-day window. The wave energy is weak, with most readings sitting below 60 (combined energy). The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to report there.
We start with Thursday morning, the 9th of July. It’s glassy, clean with a 2 ft W swell at 10 seconds, but the energy is a measly 48, and it’s just not enough to form a proper wave. The report calls it poor surf conditions, and it stays that way. Friday the 10th through to the 23rd of July is a write-off. We’re talking days of tiny swell, barely 0.3 ft to 1 ft, and a lot of it is short period junk. The wind is often cross-off or cross-on, but even when it’s clean, there’s just no water moving. You’ll be sitting on a foamie doing nothing.
The only glimmer in the whole run comes on the very last morning, Friday the 24th of July. We get a jump in the swell to 5 ft from the WNW, with a short period of 6 seconds. The energy finally ticks up to 119 (moderate energy). The wind is light and cross-on from the West, creating just small wind ripples. It’s still not a stand-out session by any stretch, and the short period means it will be a bit lumpy and disorganised. For a beginner, 5 ft is manageable, but don’t expect perfection. It’s the only day with any size on offer, so if you’re desperate for a paddle and a few crumbly close-outs, that’s your window.
Honestly, for the rest of the time, the setup with the strong winds and tiny swell looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Rusty.
