The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Coombesgate Beach is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with very little to get excited about. The only movement we see is a tiny bump around the 25th, but it’s nowhere near enough to call it a surf.
First up, the water is sitting at 64°F – a touch warmer than you’d expect for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus if you’re just having a paddle.
From now through the 24th, it’s a ghost town. Swell heights are barely a whisper, mostly around 0.3ft to 1ft, and the combined energy is pitiful – often single digits (like 2, 6, or 10). The wind is a headache too, mostly cross-on or onshore, and even when it’s clean, there’s just no power to work with. You’d be wasting your time.
The first real, and I mean *only*, glimmer of hope comes on the morning of the 28th. That’s Tuesday, July 28th. We finally get a bit of height – 3ft – rolling in from the W with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy nudges up to 60 (moderate energy). But the real story here is the wind: glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive for cleanliness. The break is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed to the WNW, and the optimum swell direction is WNW. The swell’s coming from the W, so it’s in the right ballpark. The water temperature anomaly is a touch warmer than normal. Downsides? It’s a beginner-level wave, fairly consistent, but crowds are possible. And the reality is, it’s still a pretty weak, short-period swell, so it’s not going to hold a candle to a proper groundswell. It’s a small, clean wave for beginners or a longboard.
After the 28th, it falls apart again. The 29th and 30th see a slight bump in size to 4ft, but the wind swings onshore and cross-on, fresh and lumpy, making it a messy, blown-out mess. The combined energy hits 118 (moderate wave energy) on the afternoon of the 29th, but with that onshore wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
So, the only standout here is the morning of July 28th – glassy, small, clean. It’s not a day for the history books, but if you’re desperate for a couple of knee-high rollers, that’s your window.
Rusty.
