The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this 16-day window for Coombesgate Beach is a tough one. The forecast is a long, flat, and mostly blown-out stretch, so don’t get your hopes up for any proper sessions. After a real lean start, there’s eventually a bit of size late in the second week, but it comes with a lot of wind and not much quality.
It’s pretty quiet right from the get-go. Friday afternoon, July 17th, sees a measly 0.3ft swell from the SW and a moderate onshore breeze, so forget it. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only bit of good news.
Through the weekend and into the following week, we’re starved. Saturday, July 18th, has a clean 0.7ft morning, but it’s tiny. Sunday and Monday offer nothing rideable either. The pattern is a flat spell with cross-off breezes at times, but the swell is simply absent. The combined energy is a pathetic 2 to 14 (weak) for most of these days. This continues all the way through Saturday, July 25th—still tiny, and the wind shifts around, keeping it messy.
Sunday, July 26th, we start to see a tiny pulse. The swell nudges up to 3ft to 4ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds, but the wind is cross or onshore, making it choppy. Energy climbs to 57, then 85 (still weak-to-moderate). Not worth a paddle.
The only real shift comes on Monday, July 27th, about a week and a half out from now. The swell finally jumps to 6ft from the W, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 303 (moderate). This is the biggest swell of the whole period. But here’s the catch—the wind is onshore from the WNW at 12 to 19 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and blown out. It’s a bit much for beginners at that size, and the onshore breeze will close it out. This is really the only day with any real power, but it’s not clean.
The following days, Tuesday, July 28th through to the end of the forecast, drop back down to 3ft to 4ft, with the same onshore or cross-onshore winds. The energy levels are moderate at best (100 to 158), but the surf is consistently poor. The last day, Saturday, August 1st, has 4ft with a fresh onshore breeze, so it’s a washout.
Bottom line: there’s a gap of nearly 10 days with no decent surf. The only standout is Monday, July 27th, with that 6ft of W swell, but the onshore wind (WNW at 19 mph) spoils it. For this beach-and-reef setup, the wind is just no good. If you’re a kite surfer, that afternoon might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a miss. The rest of the days are flat or tiny and choppy. It’s a rough run, but in this area, it’s normal for it to go quiet like this. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but right now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
