The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Coombesgate Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, it’s a pretty sad stretch for any surfer wanting a decent paddle. The water temp is 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly, more than two degrees above what you’d expect.
Friday (21st) kicks off with tiny 2ft swell from the west, a short 9-second period, and a cross-on breeze. It’s just messy and poor. That’s the vibe right through to Wednesday (26th) – we get a bump to 4ft on the Wednesday afternoon, but period is a weak 7 seconds and the wind is cross-off, so the combined energy is moderate (171) but it still reads as poor surf. Nothing worth paddling out for.
Thursday (27th) early morning brings a moment of calm: glassy conditions, 3ft swell from the west-southwest, 8-second period, and the combined energy is 110 – moderate. It’s described as surfable but ordinary. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but still nothing to get excited about.
After that, we go into a proper patch of ramped-up swell but shocking wind. Friday (28th) through to Monday (31st) sees waves between 3ft and 6ft, but the wind is cross-on or straight onshore, strong to fresh, creating choppy, lumpy, messy conditions. The combined energy through this period goes from moderate (113-238) up to strong on Sunday the 30th (428), but the wind just kills it. Not for paddling – might be more interesting for kite surfing.
Tuesday (1st September) is more of the same, onshore wind and weak swell, no change.
Then on Wednesday (2nd September) – hold onto your board – we get a strong pulse of groundswell. Morning sees 8ft from the west-southwest, period 9 seconds, energy is high at 897, with a fresh offshore from the east. It’s clean, but that’s expert territory. That afternoon, it bumps to 10ft, period still 9 seconds, energy goes through the roof to 1485, with a moderate offshore. Conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is easily the standout session of the whole outlook. But remember, for a beach and reef setup, that long-period west swell might break a bit straight, so points might be cleaner. Still, if you’ve got the skills, that afternoon is the one.
Thursday (3rd) morning holds at 7ft, offshore, clean, energy is still massive at 1355 – but the comment says marginal due to tides. It’s still solid for experts if you can read the banks. Afternoon, the wind shifts cross and it gets lumpy again.
Friday (4th) and Saturday (5th) drop down to 5-6ft, but the wind is cross or cross-on, so it’s messy and choppy. The energy stays strong (354-481) but the quality is poor.
The long-range stuff from the end of the second week looks like more onshore or cross-on wind, with the swell fading. Nothing to plan a trip around.
So, bottom line: don’t bother this week at all. Wait for Wednesday (2nd September) afternoon – that’s the only proper standout, but it’s for big-wave crew only. Everything else is a write-off or a kite day.
Rusty.
