The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Grab a coffee, because we’ve got a long look ahead for Coombesgate Beach, and honestly, it’s a bit of a waiting game.
Right off the bat, the pattern is flat and frustrating. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft stuff with poor conditions across the board. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, with readings like 27 (weak) and even dropping to single digits. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-off or cross-on, but it doesn’t matter because there’s simply no power behind it. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only bright spot. You’d be better off swimming than surfing for the first 10 days or so.
We finally see a pulse on the 28th of July, Tuesday morning. The swell climbs to 4ft from the WSW, and the combined energy jumps to 101 (moderate). But it’s a short-period 5-second windswell, and it’s cross-onshore, so it’ll be messy and pretty average. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5ft from the west (energy 182), but the wind is onshore and choppy. This is not the one to get excited about.
Now, the real standout, and the only one worth marking on your calendar, is the morning of Wednesday, 29th July. We get a 6ft swell from the west with an 8-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 699. That’s proper grunt. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the NNW, and the forecast says "light cross-onshore with small wind ripples," which means it could clean up nicely. This is a "marginal surf forecast" according to the numbers, but given the energy, it’s the best we’ll see. The swell is right on the limit for beginners, so this is one for the competent crew. The 6ft is pushing it for a beach-and-reef setup, but that west swell direction is the optimum for this spot, so the banks might hold. Unfortunately, the afternoon gets blown out with a stronger onshore wind, so get your session in early.
After that, the 30th of July drops back down to 2ft (energy 139) and the wind is onshore again. So, the whole 16-day window is a long, flat slog with one single morning—the 29th of July—that offers a proper, punchy session. It’s not much, but it’s the only game in town.
Rusty.
