Right then, let’s have a look at what's on the cards for your local stretch.
To be straight with you, this is a tough spell. We’re looking at a long, flat run with poor surf conditions stretching from this Saturday, the 11th, all the way through to late on Tuesday the 21st of July. The waves are tiny, the energy is weak, and the wind just won’t play ball for a proper paddle. There’s nothing worth getting wet for in that first week plus.
Things finally show a pulse of energy coming in on Tuesday the 21st of July, with the swell at Coombesgate Beach picking up to 4ft. But don’t get too excited—that’s a short-period swell (6 seconds) and it’s coming with a messy cross-shore wind hitting over 25 mph. The combined swell energy hits 148, which is moderate, but the quality is junk. This looks more like a kite-surfing session than a surfing one. That pattern of poor quality continues right through Wednesday the 22nd and into Thursday the 23rd, where the swell bumps up to 5ft and the energy climbs to 291, but it remains onshore and lumpy.
Now, the one standout is the morning of Friday the 24th of July. We get 3ft of west swell with a period of 9 seconds and the wind is a clean cross-off from the northeast at 28 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 157. It won’t be huge, but it’ll be the cleanest the waves have looked in a fortnight. Even so, the conditions are still rated poor, so keep expectations in check.
The following Saturday the 25th of July sees the swell jumping up to 10ft in the morning and the combined energy is a very strong 1085, but with a strong cross-on wind, that’s an expert-only, blown-out mess. Not one for the average punter.
Water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year. That’s over 4 degrees above average, so it’s a notable anomaly.
So, for the best bet in this whole outlook, if you’re desperate, aim for that Friday morning (the 24th). It’s the only real window with clean conditions. Everything else is a write-off.
Rusty.
