The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The whole 16-day window for Coombesgate Beach looks like a write-off. There’s nothing worth paddling out for. The surf just isn’t there, and when there is a bump of energy, the wind and conditions ruin it.
The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – 4° above average, so that’s a weird one. But it doesn’t matter much if you can’t surf.
Right from the start, Sunday the 16th, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell from the WSW with a short 7-second period and moderate wave energy (11). On top of that, a 12 mph onshore wind from the WNW makes it messy. That sets the tone.
Monday the 17th brings a bit more size – 2ft in the morning, 3ft in the afternoon – but the period is still a weak 6 seconds, and the wind is cross-on or onshore. Water is choppy and poor. Tuesday the 18th pushes to 4ft with moderate energy (141), but again, it’s onshore wind from the NW and W, and the period is too short. Wednesday the 19th offers 5ft to 5ft and energy climbing (202 to 239), but the wind is onshore or cross-on at 19–22 mph, and rain is in the mix. Lumpy and ugly.
Thursday the 20th stays around 5ft with moderate energy (296 max), but still onshore and cross-on winds. Friday the 21st drops right off to 2ft and then 1ft, with a cross-shore wind that’s not helping. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are tiny – 1ft with longer periods (8-10 seconds) and some clean cross-offshore winds, but there’s no power. You could float around, but you won’t catch a proper wave.
Then from Monday the 24th through Tuesday the 25th morning, it’s almost flat – 0.3ft with a very long 14-second period from the SW. That’s a groundswell, but there’s barely any energy (14-21). Clean wind, but no wave. Tuesday afternoon shows a little bump to 3ft with a horrible 4-second period and onshore wind. That’s junk.
Wednesday the 26th has 4ft to 4ft with moderate energy (121-111), but the wind is onshore or cross-on. Still poor. Thursday the 27th brings 5ft and energy up to 225, but the wind is cross-on and onshore. Friday the 28th hits 5ft with strong 28 mph cross-on wind and strong energy (232), but it’s messy as hell. Saturday the 29th sees the biggest swell of the window – 10ft from the WSW with a 9-second period and massive energy (1326). But that’s a strong onshore cross-wind at 19 mph, making it lumpy and dangerous. That’s only for experts, and even then, the wind is horrible. The weekend at the end – Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st – stays around 5ft to 6ft with onshore and cross-on winds and rain. No good.
Even though Coombesgate Beach is a beach and reef setup that’s fairly consistent and facing west-northwest (the optimum swell direction), every single swell is let down by poor wind and conditions. There is no standout day. If you’re into kite surfing, that Saturday the 29th with 10ft and strong wind might be interesting, but for paddling, don’t bother.
