The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Coombesgate Beach.
Straight up, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this stretch of the coast is looking flat and frustrating for the next couple of weeks. There’s a long, long gap of nothing really rideable.
We start off on the 19th of July and it’s a real struggle. The swell is barely a whisper at 0.3 ft from the west, and the energy is super weak (3). The wind is a cross-onshore, making it messy. The water is a warm 65° – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, but it won’t help you get a ride. This same poor pattern hangs around for days. The 20th and 21st are similar, with a bit of a cleaner look in the mornings with cross-offshore breezes, but the swell is still just 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft. It’s a real tease.
We get a glassy moment on the morning of Friday the 24th of July – the wind is glassy, dead calm, with a tiny 0.7 ft swell. The water is clean, but there’s just no power. It’s like a lake. The afternoon brings a light onshore, which is better for nothing.
The whole first week and into the second week is a write-off. The swell height barely cracks 2 ft until the 27th of July. On the 27th, we see a bump to 3 ft from the west, but it’s still a poor, weak swell (39). The wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be any good.
Now, the only time things get a bit interesting is on the 28th of July. The Tuesday morning brings a 5 ft swell from the west-northwest, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 243. That’s the biggest swell of the whole period. But hold your horses – the wind is howling onshore at 19 mph, and the period is a short 7 seconds. That’s a recipe for a messy, blown-out wall of whitewater. It’ll be too big for beginners, and only experts will find any use in it, and even then, it’s going to be a grumpy session. The afternoon drops a bit to 4 ft but the wind is still strong.
After that 28th, it drops back down to piddly 2 ft to 3 ft leftovers. The 3rd of August has a bit of knee-high swell at 3 ft, but the wind is again a strong cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The 28th of July has the most size, but the wind condition is a dealbreaker. This is a stretch of coast that’s fairly exposed, but the swell direction from the west-northwest just isn’t cooperating with the forecast. The only real highlight is how warm the water is on the 19th, but that’s about it. For a few days in the middle, it’s so flat it might be more interesting for a kite session if the wind picks up, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a tough pill to swallow.
Rusty.
