Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for this stretch of coast.
Alright, I’ve been staring at the charts for a while, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. For the next couple of weeks, we’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch for any decent waves. The only spot on the radar is Coombesgate Beach, a beach and reef setup that's fairly consistent, but it’s just not firing. The water's sitting at 62.1°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small win, but don’t let that fool you.
The whole 16-day window is essentially one long gap of poor surf conditions. We kick off on Saturday, 4th of July, with a small 0.8ft swell from the west, but a howling 12 mph cross-onshore wind from the west chops it all up. The energy reading is a moderate 184, but with that wind, it’s a messy, bumpy mess. Sunday the 5th offers a brief moment of onshore wind in the morning, but the swell is a pathetic 2.6ft with a short period of just 6 seconds – that’s weak windswell. The energy drops to 85, and it’s still poor.
From Monday the 6th right through to Wednesday the 15th of July, we get a consistent run of tiny swells, mostly in the 1.3ft to 2.3ft range, with cross-onshore or onshore winds. The combined energy rarely breaks triple digits, staying down around 23 to 78. There are a few mornings – like Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th – where the wind drops to glass or goes cross-offshore, but it doesn’t matter because the swell is just too small to do anything with. It’s clean but flat. That’s the story for nearly two weeks.
There is one day that stands out, but it’s a long way off. On Friday the 17th of July, the afternoon shows a surge to 4.9ft from the west, with a combined energy of 239 – that’s moderate energy. The period is a short 7 seconds though, so it’s still a messy windswell, and the cross-onshore wind from the west at 12 mph will put a chop on it. It’s the biggest swell of the whole run, but the quality is still marked as poor. That’s the best you’re going to get. It’s not worth getting excited about yet.
Saturday the 18th backs off again, with a 3.6ft west swell, but a 7 mph onshore wind puts it on the shore. The whole two weeks is a write-off for any serious surfing. If you’re a kiter, those days with bigger wind and moderate swell might look more interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a blank run. It doesn’t usually stay this poor for this long, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
