The Lowdown
G’day crew, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks at Coombesgate Beach are looking pretty ordinary. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell for days, and when a bit of size finally shows up, the wind and conditions tend to mess it up. There’s a bit of a wait, but the mornings around early September could offer a window if you’re patient and pick your moment.
First up, nothing worth paddling out for from today, Saturday the 22nd of August, all the way through until Tuesday the 25th. Wave heights are tiny, around 0.7 ft to 1 ft and the combined energy is weak, with readings like 39 or 22. Sure, the wind is clean in the mornings thanks to a cross-off breeze, but there’s just no push. You’d be floating.
Wednesday the 26th of August stays small in the morning at 1 ft, but with a gentle offshore from the ESE conditions look clean. Still, with energy at just 29, it’s not enough to get excited about.
Things change a bit on Thursday the 27th of August. The morning brings a bump in swell to 5 ft from the WSW, period a short 5 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 100 (moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-off breeze from the south, so it’s clean. For a beach and reef setup like Coombesgate Beach, 5 ft is small to medium, and with the swell coming from WSW (matching the optimum WNW direction), it’s a fair start. But keep in mind, the afternoon turns messy with a cross-on breeze and the swell gets lumpy at 7 ft. The morning is your only real chance, and it’s still ordinary.
Friday the 28th of August is a write-off: onshore wind and a messy 3 ft to 6 ft. Not worth it.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August stay poor. Saturday has 6 ft to 5 ft from the west but with onshore wind, making it choppy. Sunday is slightly better with a cross-off breeze on the 3 ft swell, but energy is low at 103.
Monday the 31st of August into Tuesday the 1st of September is more of the same: onshore winds, 6 ft to 3 ft, messy.
Now, here’s where it gets a bit interesting. Wednesday the 2nd of September morning: the swell jumps to 6 ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 455 (strong). The wind is a cross-off from the south, so it’s clean. This is surfable, with more push than we’ve seen. The afternoon gets bigger at 7 ft but with a light cross-on wind, so it’s a bit bumpy. For a beginner-friendly break, 6 ft is getting into intermediate territory, and 7 ft could be too much for learners.
Thursday the 3rd of September morning is the standout of the whole forecast. Swell hits 8 ft from the WSW, period a solid 11 seconds, and combined energy is a huge 1464 (very strong). The wind is a cross-off from the south, so conditions should be clean. That’s a proper swell for this spot, with decent period meaning better shaped waves and longer lulls between sets which makes paddling out easier. 8 ft is expert territory here though, so if you’re not comfortable in solid surf, give it a miss. The afternoon drops to 7 ft but gets cross-shore wind, so the window is the morning.
Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of September fall away quickly, with 5 ft dropping to 4 ft and the winds turning onshore or cross-shore. Not worth chasing.
So if you’re hanging for a wave, the best bet is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. That’s your one proper shot at clean, solid waves at Coombesgate Beach. Otherwise, the Wednesday morning before that might give you a passable session if you’re keen for something smaller.
Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so if you’re heading out on that Thursday morning, get in early.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, things can change.
Rusty.
