The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is a pretty tough stretch for Coombesgate Beach, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The whole 16-day outlook is a real battle, with almost every session showing poor surf conditions. The water temperature is 66° here, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice surprise if you’re just paddling out, but you’ll need a thick skin for the rest.
Right now, the first real surf to speak of doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, 20th August. We get a 5ft swell out of the west, with a period around 7 seconds, and about 367 (moderate energy) in the water. But it’s onshore wind from the WNW at 19 mph, so it’s messy, and the forecast is poor. That same pattern sticks around into Thursday afternoon – 5ft, 9 seconds, still onshore WNW wind. Not worth paddling out for.
Friday the 21st we see a drop in size – 2ft to 2ft, west/northwest swell, period 8 seconds. Wind is cross-onshore, then onshore, so it’s choppy and not clean. Forget it. Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd are tiny – 1.0ft to 1ft from the west, period 9 to 10 seconds. The wind does go light and cross-offshore on Saturday morning and Sunday morning, so the surface is clean, but there’s almost no wave energy (energy in the 20s and 30s). Honestly, it’s a lake.
Then we hit a real flat spell. Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th of August: swell drops to 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with long periods of 13 to 14 seconds but no height. Wind is offshore or cross-off, but there’s nothing to ride. The energy reads 12 to 18 – that’s barely a ripple.
Wednesday 26th August we see a little pulse: 3ft in the morning, building to 5ft by afternoon, west-southwest to west direction, 8 seconds period. Energy jumps to 151 and then 368. But the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy again. The surf quality is still poor. Thursday 27th and Friday 28th stay similar – 3ft to 3ft, west/southwest swells, mostly cross-onshore winds. Not clean.
The standout (if you can call it that) comes on Monday 31st August. The afternoon brings a 7ft west swell with a 10-second period, and combined energy hits 738 (strong). That’s solid, and the wind is offshore from the WNW at 19 mph, so it’s blowing clean. This is easily the best wave of the entire outlook – but at 7ft, it’s getting into expert territory, especially for a beach and reef break. The optimum swell direction here is WNW, and this one is out of the west, so it’s close. The period is 10 seconds, which is moderate, not groundswell, but the energy is there. Expect some crowd if you go, because this spot can get busy.
The morning of the 31st is also decent – 5ft, similar direction, also onshore wind, so the afternoon is the pick. After that, the first couple days of September keep showing 4ft to 5ft, but with more cross-onshore winds. Wednesday 2nd September morning is marginal – 5ft, period 8 seconds, cross-shore wind from the SSW at 9 mph, with gentle cross-shore conditions. Could be worth a look if you’re desperate, but it’s not clean.
Overall, the best on offer is Monday 31st August afternoon. That’s the one to circle. The rest of the window is mostly small, blown out, or flat. This is a tough run for Coombesgate Beach, but that one afternoon might just save your week.
