The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Coombesgate Beach.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. The water is sitting at a warm 66°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s working in our favour. We’ve got a long stretch of weak, short-period windswell and crappy cross-onshore winds.
We start off Tuesday morning, 18th August, with some knee-high, 4ft swell from the west, but it’s only pushing 7 seconds of period and a moderate breeze is on it. The combined energy is a weak 154. It’s a "poor surf conditions" call, and that’s the honest truth. This pattern of messy, choppy, onshore wind with small, weak swell (combined energy in the low double digits and hundreds) basically locks in through Thursday, 21st August. The morning of the 21st sees a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the NE, but the swell has dropped to a pathetic 2ft, so it’s barely a ripple.
The whole weekend, 22nd and 23rd of August, is flat. We’re talking 1.0ft of nothing. A couple of glassy moments on Monday the 24th morning, but again, with 1.0ft, there’s nothing to ride.
Now, here’s the one standout that gets a bit interesting. Keep your eyes on Tuesday, 25th August. That morning, the forecast shows a solid 7ft groundswell from the WSW (9 seconds) slamming in. The combined energy rockets up to 1142, which is a serious amount of power. The wind is a fresh offshore from the SE, which is clean. That’s a big day for experts only – that 7ft is going to be chunky, and with that period, it’ll be powerful. The setup here is a beach and reef, so expect some heavy, shifting peaks. For the regular paddler, it’s going to be a full-on mission. The afternoon on the 25th drops to 5ft but stays clean, so there’s a window for strong intermediates if they’re smart. After that, the swell falls apart again.
After that spike, the surf drops back to tiny, weak, and inconsistent for the rest of the run into the first few days of September. There’s a surfable but "very ordinary" blip on the morning of 27th August with 2ft and clean conditions, but it’s not worth getting excited about.
So, the bottom line: the only true standout is the morning of Tuesday, 25th August. That’s the shot of power for the hardcore crew. For everyone else, it’s a long wait for little reward.
Rusty.
