The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Coombesgate Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. For the first few days, we’re dealing with a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind, and the wave quality is just not there. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so that’s one thing we don’t have to worry about.
Wednesday the 19th is a write-off, with a 3 ft west swell and a 9 mph onshore wind. The afternoon gets worse with a 19 mph cross-onshore making it lumpy. Thursday the 20th sees a bit more size, with 6 ft to 5 ft west swell, but it’s all onshore, so it’s messy. The combined energy is moderate (349 to 388), but it’s not doing us any favours.
Friday morning the 21st is the first real glimmer of hope. We’ve got a small 2 ft west swell, but the wind is a light 6 mph cross-offshore from the NE. The energy is weak (84), but the conditions are clean. This is surfable, just very ordinary. It’s a beginner-friendly wave today, but don’t expect any barrels.
The weekend into next week is tiny. From Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 26th morning, the swell drops to 1 ft and below, with periods around 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (between 12 and 87). There’s a moment on Tuesday afternoon the 25th that’s worth a mention: a 2 ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, and glassy conditions. It’s weak energy (87), but for a log or a funboard, you might snag a few clean little waves.
Things pick up in size again from Wednesday the 26th onward, but the wind is a problem. The swell gets up to 5 ft to 5 ft, with moderate energy (256 to 250), but it’s cross-shore and cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and lumpy. Not great for a paddle.
The end of the month and into September sees some real size roll in, but it’s for experts only. On Monday the 31st of August, we’re looking at an 12 ft west swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy is very strong (2153). But the wind is a fresh 19 mph onshore. This is a beast of a wave, but it’s going to be a washing machine. For the experienced crew only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. The same goes for Tuesday the 1st of September with 8 ft to 7 ft swells and strong energy (1381 to 623).
The best bet in this whole 16-day window is Friday morning the 21st of August. It’s the only time we get a clean, small wave with a light offshore wind. It’s small, but it’s clean. After that, we’re waiting for a window that just doesn’t open cleanly. The big swells at the end are too raw and windy for a good time.
So, keep your expectations low, and if you’re keen, get out there on Friday the 21st morning for a few little ones.
Rusty.
