The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the 16-day window here, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s pretty grim. Coombesgate Beach, a beach and reef setup, is the only spot on the cards, and this stretch is looking like a long, flat, and messy run. There’s a real gap of no decent surf from now until the start of the second week, with only tiny, weak waves and poor conditions.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
Friday, the 21st of August, kicks off with a 2ft swell from the west, but it’s got a cross-onshore wind making it choppy and poor. Saturday morning the 22nd cleans up a bit with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops to a tiny 1ft, and the energy is weak (38). That’s not worth paddling out for. The rest of the week is more of the same—small, weak swells, mostly under 2ft, with only occasional cleaner windows but nothing with any push.
We finally see a bit more size roll in from Friday the 28th of August, with the swell building to 4ft on Friday morning and 6ft by Friday afternoon, but the period is short (7 seconds) and the winds are messy—cross-shore and onshore, making it poor for surfing. The energy gets moderate (285) but the quality is just not there. Saturday the 29th sees the biggest swell of the period, 7ft from the west, but it’s coupled with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The energy is strong (488-513), but this is more of a kite-surfing scenario than a clean paddle session. It’s a bit too big for beginners and, with the wind chop, only for the experienced if they’re desperate.
After that, things drop off again. The first days of September look flat and weak, with no real standouts at all. There’s a brief clean window on Friday the 4th of September with a light offshore wind, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft—barely a ripple.
The only real standout highlight, if you can call it that, is Monday the 24th of August. The morning has a light offshore wind from the east, making conditions clean, but the swell is only 1ft from the west-southwest. The energy is weak (29). It’s clean, but you’ll be struggling to catch anything. Coombesgate Beach is a beginner-friendly spot, but with the size so small and inconsistent, it’s a tough call.
Honestly, this is a blank run for the area. The forecasts can change, but as it stands, there’s nothing worth getting excited about in the next 16 days.
