The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Coombesgate Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak run for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions, and it’s not until the very end of the window that we get a glimmer of something rideable. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re paddling out.
The first real chance for a wave doesn’t come until Friday the 4th of September. That morning, we’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds and a gentle offshore breeze from the south. The combined energy is moderate at 144. It’s not going to be a world-beater, but after such a long dry spell, it’s the only surfable option on offer. The wind is offshore, so the surface should be clean, making it the standout of the entire forecast period.
The afternoon of the 4th gets messy again with a cross-onshore blow, and after that, the swell fades back into nothing. The rest of the 16 days is a write-off—days of tiny, weak, or blown-out slop, with a lot of wild wind and choppy conditions. The morning of Thursday the 3rd of September is glassy, but the swell is a paltry 1.0ft, so it’s barely a ripple.
So, to be blunt: the only day worth paddling out is Friday the 4th of September, and even then, it’s a small, clean morning session for the beginners or longboarders. The break is fairly consistent, so it’s unusual to see such a long blank run, but here we are. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
