Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Coombesgate Beach over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty flat spell we’re looking at, and honestly, for the first week and a half, there’s nothing that’s worth paddling out for. The wave energy is just too weak, with the combined energy all sitting under 250 (like 198 or 234), and the swell is mostly around 1 ft to 4 ft from the west, but the wind is nearly always cross-onshore, chopping things up, or just too onshore. It’s a beach and reef setup, and with those winds, it’s not going to be clean.
We finally get a tiny glimmer of hope on Monday, 13 July. The morning session shows up with a glassy wind – dead calm – and a 3 ft west swell with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which generally means better shaped waves and more energy in the water (combined energy is 200). It’s still small, but glassy conditions are a major positive, so the surf will look clean and lined up. That’s the one standout window in the whole forecast. It’s not huge, but it’s the only time the wind really plays ball. The trouble is, the swell direction is from the west, and this break prefers it from the WNW, so it’s a bit off the optimum, but for a glassy morning with waist-high waves, it might be fun for the beginners. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
After that, the afternoon picks up to 3 ft from the west with a 12-second period, but the wind swings onshore and kills it. And then from Tuesday onwards, we’re back to small, choppy slop, with combined energy dropping into the double digits (139, 131, 50) and wind always getting messy. Honestly, there’s a long gap of no recommendations from Friday 3 July right through until Monday 13 July, and then after Monday afternoon, it’s dry again.
So what’s the call? Monday morning, 13 July, is your best bet. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but glassy conditions are rare, and a 3 ft groundswell at 11 seconds will give you something to ride. If you’re a beginner, this is your window. For the rest of the period, don’t bother – the combined energy is low, the wind is poor, and the setup looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
