The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you—this forecast is a tough one. We're looking at a long, slow stretch with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a dud, so don't be holding your breath for any epic sessions.
The only spot on the radar is Coombesgate Beach, a beach and reef setup that's fairly consistent. But honestly, it's a drag. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year—nice for a dip, but not much help for the surf.
We kick off on Thursday, 20 August, with rain showers and a fresh WNW wind blowing straight onshore. There's a 5ft swell from the west, but it's short-period at 7 seconds and the combined energy is weak (366). It's a total mess—poor surf. That sets the tone for the next several days.
Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 25th of August are all poor conditions. Swell drops to tiny 0.3ft to 1ft, and while some winds are clean or offshore, there's just no energy. The combined energy sinks to as low as 5. It's a flat spell, plain and simple.
We get a slight bump on Wednesday, 26 August, with a 4ft swell from the southwest, but the period is still short (7-8 seconds) and the combined energy is moderate (140-244). Winds are cross-offshore, so it's clean, but the waves are weak and messy. Still poor.
Thursday the 27th through to the 30th of August is more of the same—small, short-period swells with onshore or cross-shore winds. The only standout in the whole window is a late pulse on Friday, 28 August, in the afternoon. We see a 10ft swell from the WSW, with a combined energy of 1123—that's strong. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore, creating lumpy, choppy conditions. It's only for experienced surfers, and even then, it's a rough-looking beast. The rest of that day is poor.
Then, on Saturday, 29 August, morning brings an 8ft west swell with a 9-second period and light onshore winds. The combined energy is strong (1029), but it's rated marginal at best. Too big for beginners, and the onshore wind will chunk it up. Afternoon drops to 7ft but the wind swings onshore again.
After that, it's back to tiny, weak swells with onshore winds through to the end of the period. On Thursday, 3 September, we finally get a little window: a 4ft west swell with a 6-second period, light offshore winds, and clean conditions. The combined energy is weak (107), but it's the most rideable we've seen in days. The next morning, Friday, 4 September, is glassy with a 4ft swell from the NNW, but it's short-period and weak energy (130). It's surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Honestly, this is a blank run. The only time it gets interesting is the 10ft swell on 28 August, and even that's a messy, expert-only affair. Keep your eyes on the forecasts—things can change, but right now, I'd leave the board at home.
Rusty.
