Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coombesgate Beach over the next 16 days.
G’day surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up—this outlook for Coombesgate Beach is a real tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window and for the vast majority of it, the swell is tiny and the conditions are poor. The first real sniff of any surf doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 22nd of July, and even then, it’s a messy situation.
The water temp at the start sits at about 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight for a while. From Tuesday the 7th right through to Tuesday the 22nd of July, we’re looking at flat, weak swells mostly between 0.3 ft and 2 ft. The combined swell energy struggles to break 100 (often in the single digits or low teens), which is weak energy. Winds are often cross-offshore or clean, but with barely any waves, that’s small consolation. The rare pulses of swell—like around Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th—only push to 1–2 ft and are plagued by cross-onshore winds or choppy conditions. There is a brief moment on Friday the 10th morning with clean conditions and a 2 ft W swell at 9 seconds, but it’s still too small for much fun.
We finally see a change on Wednesday the 22nd of July. That morning, a W swell jumps to 5 ft with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy hits 232—that’s moderate wave energy. But here’s the kicker: the wind is onshore from the west at 22 mph and it’s raining. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions” and the onshore wind is going to mess it up. The swell direction is from the W, and this break’s optimum swell is from the WNW—it’s close but not perfect. On top of that, the period is short (8 seconds), which is wind swell, meaning it’ll be fat, weak, and disorganised. The setup is a beach and reef, so on a day like this, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, what’s the standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. The only period with any size is that Wednesday the 22nd, but between the onshore wind, rain, and poor quality, it’s not worth paddling out for. This break is “fairly consistent” on paper, but this forecast shows a brutal run of flatness. For this area, a blank run like this is more normal than you’d hope.
Stay tuned—forecasts can change, but for now, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
