The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a grim 16-day outlook for Brighton Beach (Melbourne) – it’s a real flat spell, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The whole window is a write-off for any decent surf. From Wednesday the 19th of August right through to Thursday the 3rd of September, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions. Not a single recommendation pops up.
The first few days are the worst. Wednesday the 19th brings a weak 2 ft north-northeast windswell with a shocking 4-second period, combined energy a measly 16 – that’s flat, not surfable. Plus a strong 25 mph cross-shore wind just tears it to bits. Thursday and Friday don’t get any better, with tiny 0.3 ft south pulses and periods all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-onshore breezes. The water’s sitting at 54°F, which is about 0.5°F below average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
We get a taste of near-glassy conditions on Sunday the 23rd afternoon – calm, offshore – but with a swell of 0.3 ft, it’s a lake. There’s a tiny bump of moderate wave energy (107) on Saturday the 29th afternoon, with a 2 ft south swell and 14-second period, but the wind is a messy cross-shore at 12 mph. The setup is a beach break, so with that longer period, it’ll be straight and crumbly – not worth the paddle.
The rest of the run into September is more of the same: tiny, weak, blown out, or glassy but flat. Honestly, for this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal in winter when the Southern Ocean isn’t cooperating. There’s nothing here for a paddle surfer, and even the kite crowd won’t find much with these anemic swells. Hang in there, forecasts can change, but this one’s a dud.
Rusty.
