The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook is a bit of a tough one. Boca do Poco is a consistent point break that’s exposed to the north, and it’s a fairly consistent spot, so it tends to have pulses of energy, but for the next 16 days we’re looking at a long stretch of pretty poor surf conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 81°F with an anomaly of 2°F, so it’s about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real surf window is a long way off. From now through late August and right into early September, conditions are consistently poor. The swell energy is mostly weak to moderate – the combined energy sits between 106 and 375 (that’s the moderate range), but it’s coming from the east or east-northeast, which is not optimum for this spot. The swell period is short, around 6 to 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, and it’s breaking with a lot of cross-shore or cross-onshore wind. The wind state is often cross or cross-on, with moderate to fresh breezes and a lumpy, choppy surface. The morning of Monday 24 August has a small window of clean conditions with a cross-offshore wind, but the wave comment is still only marginal – the swell is 5 ft from the east with a 7-second period, and energy is 223. That’s the closest thing to a surfable moment, but it’s really not worth getting excited about. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of this period.
The situation improves slightly on the morning of Saturday 5 September, when we see clean conditions again with a cross-offshore wind and a 5 ft east swell, period 7 seconds, energy 257. That’s the best of the bunch, but it’s still short-period windswell, and the optimum swell direction is north, so the direction is wrong. The morning of 6 September also looks clean, with 5 ft from the east-northeast, period 7, energy 189 – again, not ideal. After that, 7 September morning has clean conditions but the swell drops to 4 ft and energy plummets to 115. So, there’s no standout session in this outlook. The best you can hope for is a clean, knee-to-waist high, short-period wave on a few mornings in early September, but it’s a long way off and nothing to mark your calendar for.
In short, this is a blank run for the area. Boca do Poco is consistent, but it tends not to stay poor for long, so forecasts can change. For now, leave the boards in the car and check back in a week.
