The Lowdown

Alright, this is a tough one to start. I'm looking at the next two weeks here, and honestly, there's not a lot to get excited about for a solid stretch. We've got a long gap of flat, weak surf before one big, late arrival that might save the run.

Right from the start, July 31st through to August 12th is a real struggle. The energy is just not there. The combined swell energy barely cracks over 200 for most of it, and that’s weak, weak stuff. We’re talking small waves, messy winds, and onshore conditions. There’s a brief moment on the afternoon of August 1st where the wind goes light and cross-off, and you could paddle out for a knee-high wave, but it’s nothing to write home about. After that, it’s days of tiny, choppy junk with nothing offering any quality. Honestly, for a stretch like this at a beach/jetty spot, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you're into that kind of thing.

Then, the real story comes on Thursday, August 13th. This is the only true standout in the whole outlook. The morning at Barra do Chui is looking like a real gem. We’ve got a solid 7 ft swell rolling in from the SSW with a 9-second period. That’s decent groundswell with enough energy (1143) to get the bank working. And the clincher? Glassy conditions. No wind at all. That is the kind of morning you set an alarm for. This is for experienced surfers only – that size gets hefty out there, but for the crew that knows what they're doing, it's going to be clean, lined up, and empty.

Unfortunately, that window closes quick. The afternoon gets onshore and drops a little, and by Friday the 14th it’s blowing hard from the ENE with an 12 ft swell. That’s full-on, blown-out storm surf, and that continues into the weekend with crazy energy (9454) and messy conditions. That late-arriving swell is just too big and too choppy to be surfable. The whole second week is a one-morning wonder.

Alright, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s a grim forecast, but that Thursday morning (the 13th) is the one to watch. Everything else is a pass.

Stay patient.
