Barra do Chui Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Barra do Chui in feet and miles per hour.

It has been a rough stretch, no two ways about it. The next week or so is looking pretty bleak. The wind just won't give us a break—it’s been hammering the surf with onshore and cross-onshore flow. The water is about 55°F, which is around average for this time of year.

We’ve got a long gap with no good waves. From Thursday the 13th through Saturday the 16th, it’s a total loss. Winds from the SE and ESE at 12-22 mph, cross-on and choppy. The swell is there, with some 3-5 ft SSE groundswell, but the quality is described as poor. Not worth dragging your board out.

Sunday the 16th afternoon is the first ray of light. The wind drops to a glassy NNW breeze at just 3 mph, and we get about 4 ft of E swell with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (262), but those clean, glassy conditions mean you could get a few fun ones. It’s the only real stand-out in the first week.

Then we hit another flat spell. Monday the 17th through Thursday the 20th, the winds turn back onshore or cross-on, with poor conditions again.

Friday the 21st of August is where it all comes together. The wind goes clean offshore from the WNW at 12-16 mph. We’ve got a solid 4-5 ft SSE groundswell with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a healthy (313). The forecast says "expect good surf conditions". This is the session to mark in your calendar. The swell direction is SSE, not the exact ideal S, but with clean offshore wind, it’ll be well-organized and fun.

We get another clean morning on Saturday the 22nd with a tiny 2 ft SSE swell from the WSW cross-off, but it’s small.

The following week has more size but also more wind. Sunday the 23rd is cross-shore with a 5 ft SSE swell at 12 seconds, but it’s messy. Monday the 24th is cross-onshore and poor again.

Then we get a big pulse. Tuesday the 25th morning brings a strong 8 ft SSE swell with an 11-second period and massive energy readings (2088). Wind is onshore from the ESE at 6 mph, so it’s not clean, but the size is intimidating. That’s for experts only—well over the 8 ft threshold for anyone else. If you’re on a kite, this is the moment.

The real sleeper might be Thursday the 27th. Light winds from the N at 3 mph, becoming a cross-off from the WSW in the afternoon, with a 4 ft SE swell at 13 seconds (very long period groundswell). Energy is (415), with clean conditions. Those long-period waves will hold their shape beautifully.

Friday the 28th sees a pulse of 6-7 ft E swell with a short 7-second period. Wind is light, so you might get a few, but it’ll be a bit crumbly.

So, the clear winner is Friday the 21st. Clean offshore, 4-5 ft SSE groundswell. Second look is Thursday the 27th for some long-period gems. The rest? Mostly a washout unless you’re into wind sports.
