The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let's talk about what's on the table for Barra do Chui over the next couple of weeks.

The truth is, the first week and a bit is pretty grim for paddle surfing. We've got a long stretch of poor conditions with messy winds and cross-onshore chop dominating the picture from the 15th to the 20th of September. The swell is small and weak, with the combined energy struggling to hit much more than 300. You wouldn’t even bother looking at it for a proper surf.

Things finally show a glimmer of hope on Monday the 21st of September. The morning shapes up with a clean 3ft swell from the east, a 10-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind. That’s the best call of the whole run. The combined energy is just over 200, and the conditions are clean. It’s not a monster, but it’s surfable and tidy. The afternoon goes glassy with light winds and a dropping 3ft swell, but that morning window is your best shot by a long shot.

After that, it gets messy again, but Wednesday the 23rd of September morning offers another quick clean window. A 2ft groundswell from the south with a very long 12-second period and light cross-offshore winds. For a beach/jetty setup like Barra do Chui, that long period might make the waves a bit straight, but with clean conditions and light winds, it’s worth a look if you’re keen for a cruisey session.

The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing wild to report there. Crowds can show up here sometimes, so keep that in mind.

The second week drifts back to mediocrity with poor winds and small, weak, onshore junk. There’s really nothing to get excited about after that 21st and 23rd. The forecast is pretty clear: the first real standouts are those two mornings. Aim for Monday the 21st morning if you want the most rideable and cleanest surf on offer.
