Today, many surfers would wear a winter wetsuit, a neoprene hood, gloves and boots.
The water temperature (12 °C) at Barra do Chui is rather cold today and the windchill (4 °C) will make the air temperature seem even colder, not helped by a lack of sunshine. You'll need a thick hooded winter wetsuit to keep your head warm and ideally neoprene gloves and neoprene boots too.

Actual sea surface water temperatures close to shore at Barra do Chui can vary by several degrees compared with these open water averages. This is especially true after heavy rain, close to river mouths or after long periods of strong offshore winds. Offshore winds cause colder deep water to replace surface water that has been warmed by the sun.
