Imperial Version
Well, mate, I gotta be straight with you – looking at the next sixteen days, it's a pretty grim picture for a paddle. Honestly, there's not a single day that's screaming "surf's up!" The whole run is a real struggle. We're looking at nearly two weeks of "poor surf conditions" with only a couple of days that even get a sniff of a "marginal" call, and even that's more of a "maybe if you're desperate" type of thing.
The pattern is consistent: small, weak swell that's mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The water temp is bang on average for the time of year at 80°, so no excuses there, but the wind is the real killer. It's almost always blowing right into or across the waves, making a mess of things.
The only spot that ever gets a mention is Aracaju. It's a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent beach break, but the crowds are a possibility there. The problem is, the swell is tiny and the wind is junk. The swell direction is mostly from the SE, but the optimum for the spot is from the S, so it's never really lining up.
The first real blip on the radar doesn't come until Wednesday, July 22nd. The morning shows a 7ft swell from the ESE, giving the strongest energy reading of the whole period (1134). That's a moderate to strong amount of energy. However, the period is a short 9 seconds, so it'll be a bit of a mess. Even then, the forecast is only "marginal" – the wind is onshore, so it will be lumpy. The afternoon drops back to 6ft and the score goes back to poor. For a beginner break, 7ft is getting a bit punchy, but for anyone else, it's the only time the ocean has any real size. But with the onshore wind, it's not going to be a classic.
For the rest of the run, we're looking at waist-high or smaller slop. The end of the first week and into the second week sees some swell pulses, like 5ft on the 17th and 19th, but the wind is always cross-on or onshore, and the energy is mostly moderate. It's a lot of nothing, really.
If you're determined to get wet, the 22nd morning is your only real gamble. Otherwise, it's a long wait. The forecast can change, but for now, it's a blank run. For a spot like this with mostly consistent conditions, a stretch this poor is a bit of a surprise, but it happens.
Stay tuned, and check back in a few days.
