The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Looking at the next sixteen days for Aracaju, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a whole lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind lined up, and the waves are mostly going to be a mess. The short version is: don’t get your hopes up for any kind of classic session. The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t even show up until Thursday the 27th, and even that’s a marginal call.
The good news is the water’s running warm at 79°F with the anomaly at 1°F, so it’s about average for this time of year. That’s something, at least. The bad news is that from Saturday the 22nd through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s all small, short-period windswell – think 1ft to 4ft – with the wind blowing right onshore from the ESE. The energy is weak to moderate, with readings in the 65 to 215 range depending on the day. It’s going to be bumpy, choppy, and just plain ugly. You’d be fighting it the whole time, and for what? Not much.
Then, on Thursday the 27th, things get interesting. We get a proper groundswell arriving from the S with a long 16-second period. The combined energy jumps to 804 – that’s strong wave energy, the most we’ll see in this whole window. The swell height reads 3ft to 4ft, but this is a long-period south swell, and that’s a big deal for a spot like Aracaju. This kind of swell can really line up. However – and it’s a big however – the wind is still onshore from the E to ESE. It’s not a complete washout, but it’s a far cry from glassy. The forecast still puts it as a “marginal” call, not a “poor” one, which is why it’s the one to keep an eye on. If the wind backs off even a little, this could be the standout of the fortnight, but right now it’s only a “maybe.”
After that, from Friday the 28th right through to Sunday the 6th of September, it’s back to the same old story. The south swell fades, and we’re left with easterly windswell – 2ft up to 5ft – but with those periods dropping back down to 7 or 8 seconds. The energy stays in the moderate range, between 143 and 418. The wind is consistently cross-onshore or onshore, 12 to 18 mph, which means lumpy, crumbly, and generally poor conditions. There are moments when the swell size pushes up – like the 5ft at the end of August and into the first week of September – but that short period and onshore wind will ruin any chance of a clean wave. It’s just frustrating.
To be honest, if you’re looking for a real surf, this isn’t the window. The only reason to paddle out is if you’re desperate. The long-period south swell on the 27th is the one little spark in all of this, a promising sign of what could be, but the wind needs to play ball. Otherwise, it’s a blank run for Aracaju. It happens. The ocean doesn’t owe us anything. We just wait for the next proper pulse and hope the wind gods are kinder.
Rusty.
