The Lowdown
Alright, let’s switch to feet and miles for the imperial crew.
Honestly, the outlook for Aracaju is pretty flat and ugly. There’s no good surf to speak of for the next couple of weeks. The first day that might just about be worth a look is Thursday July 30, and even that’s shaky.
From Friday July 17 all the way through to Wednesday July 29, you’re looking at a real dry spell. The waves are small, the period is short, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore all the way. Swell comes from the southeast mostly, with wave heights running from about 1ft up to 7ft, but the period rarely gets above 8 seconds. That’s windswell junk. Winds are blowing 15 to 30 km/h from the ESE and SE, making the surface choppy and messy.
The wave energy is mostly weak to moderate. On Saturday July 18 there’s some moderate energy readings around 486 to 498, but it’s all wind-affected and onshore, so not worth paddling out.
Wednesday July 29 shows a change. The swell shifts to the SSE and the period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s a proper long period groundswell. Problem is, the wave height is only 2ft, so it’s small and glassy-looking but really only suitable for a longboard. The combined energy reads 352 to 358, which is strong for the size, but with the light cross-onshore breeze and tiny waves, you’d be chasing shadows.
Now Thursday July 30 is your best bet, and it’s still marginal. The wind goes cross-shore from the NE at 20 km/h. Swell is SSE at 3ft with a 15 second period – that’s groundswell with proper energy. Combined energy hits 504, so there’s real power in the water. Conditions are described as marginal and tide-dependent, but if you’ve got to get wet, this is the window. The direction isn’t spot-on for Aracaju (they like south), but the long period could mean cleaner lines at the right spot.
After that it fades, with the swell dropping through Friday July 31 and into August, and the wind turning back onshore.
Water temperature is 80°F, about average for this time of year.
