G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve stared at the charts for Aracaju and I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day window is a write-off. There’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for. The finder is a big fat zero from start to finish, so we’re in a real dry spell.
The whole run is one long blank stretch. We kick off on Sunday the 12th of July with a bit of swell around 3 ft from the SE, but it’s a cross-on breeze and the wave comment says it all – “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s not a goer. From there, it’s just day after day of “poor surf conditions.” The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, and the sea state is choppy or lumpy. You’ll get a few days of decent swell size – like Wednesday the 15th when it bumps up to 5 ft to 7 ft, and Thursday the 16th with 6 ft from the SSE – but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19-22 mph, making it a messy, blown-out mess. The combined energy is moderate to strong (341 to 1152), but without clean wind, it’s worthless for a paddle.
The swell direction is mostly SE or SSE, which is actually the optimum for the spot (S), so the exposure is there. But the wind never aligns. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, so that’s not the issue. The problem is the persistent onshore flow. Even the longer period groundswells (like 12 seconds on the 18th and 19th) are wasted due to the wind.
For a spot like Aracaju, which is a beginner-friendly beach break, this kind of blank run isn’t unusual. It’s a stretch of poor conditions that just doesn’t let up. If you’re a kite surfer, those bigger, windier days on the 15th and 16th with 7 ft swell and 22 mph cross-onshore wind might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, there’s nothing here. The forecasts can always change, but right now, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
