Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the local surf scene. Gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead. The good news? There *is* swell, but the wind just isn't playing ball for most of the 16-day run. We're looking at a long, frustrating period of messy conditions, so don't get your hopes up for anything clean, especially for paddling.
The first chance to even think about it is Tuesday morning, July 7th, at Aracaju. It's tiny – only 1ft of swell coming from the SSE – but the wind is glassy. Seriously, it's dead calm. That's the one saving grace. You'll be able to get a few waves on the inside, and it'll be super easy paddling. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. But the wave energy is weak. And remember, there are crowds here sometimes, which won't help the vibe on such a small day.
From Tuesday afternoon, it's all downhill. The wind swings onshore or cross-onshore and stays there for days. Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th are a write-off – the swell bumps up a bit to 2ft, but the wind is from the E and ESE, just chopping everything up. This trend of onshore wind and poor surf quality runs straight through until Monday, July 13th. By then the swell is dropping back to 2ft with a short period, and the wind is a messy cross-shore from the NNE. Not worth a paddle.
Then things get weird. The swell stays tiny and weak through the middle of the month, but on the 16th of July (Thursday afternoon) we see a spike of 4ft, but it's a short-period windswell from the SSE. It's onshore wind and accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one.
The real tease comes on Saturday, July 18th. The swell jumps to 5ft from the SSE, with strong wave energy. The period is moderate. But here's the kicker: the wind is still onshore from the ESE, and it's raining. The forecast says it's "poor surf conditions." For a beginner, this 5ft swell is getting too big, and for anyone else, the onshore wind will make it a bumpy, messy close-out. Saturday afternoon shows the same story with 6ft swell and marginal conditions.
After that, it's back to onshore winds and moderate swell through the 22nd. So, the one and only bright spot? Tuesday morning, July 7th. It's small, it's weak, but it's glassy. If you're desperate for a glide in clean water with no wind, that's your window. For everything else, save your energy.
Stay patient, the ocean will come good again.
Rusty.
