The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Wurtulla over the next couple of weeks. It’s been a bit of a flat, frustrating stretch for a while now, but there are a few windows where it might just be worth getting wet.
Water temp here is sitting at 67°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.
Overall Pattern
The first real stand-out is the glassy session on the morning of Saturday 22nd August. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the east, period of 7 seconds, and glassy conditions with a slight SE breeze. The combined energy is weak at 119 – so don’t expect much push, but for a beginner-friendly break, that’s clean, small, and workable. Crowds are often around here, so you won’t be alone. It’s not going to win any awards for power, but it’s the best you’ll get for a while.
Then on Sunday 23rd August, the morning is similarly glassy again, with a 4ft ENE swell, period 8 seconds, and combined energy of 138. Still weak in the energy department, but the glassy wind makes it surfable. Definitely not a standout, just a continuation of the small, clean theme.
The next real flicker of hope comes on Wednesday 26th August in the morning. We get a clean, offshore breeze from the WSW at 9 mph, and a 3ft ENE swell with 8-second period. The combined energy is 125, still weak, but the offshore wind will clean it right up. That’s a session for the patient surfer.
Moving into the second week, things stay small and ordinary. The morning of Friday 28th August is glassy again with tiny 2ft swell from the NE, period 7 seconds, energy a very weak 92. Not much to get excited about, but glassy is glassy.
Saturday 29th August morning has a clean cross-offshore breeze and 2ft NE swell. Again, tiny.
Later on, Sunday 30th August morning brings a decent little pulse: 4ft swell from the SE, period 9 seconds, combined energy of 207 (moderate energy), with a clean cross-offshore WSW breeze. That’s the most interesting increase in energy we’ve seen in a while, but the swell direction is straight onshore for this break, and the period is short, so it’ll be messy and choppy. Still, it’s a bit more size.
Monday 31st August morning: 4ft SE swell, short 6-second period, energy 160, clean cross-offshore wind. Again, the size is there but the period is too short for decent shape.
Best on Offer
Honestly, the standout is the Saturday 22nd August morning – it’s the only window where everything lines up as good as it gets here: glassy, small, and surfable. If you’re a beginner, that’s your morning. For the more experienced surfer, the Sunday 30th August morning offers the most energy (207) and a clean wind, but the short period and onshore direction mean it’s not going to be a classic. That’s the pick for size, but it’s messy.
There are gaps from the 24th to the 25th and again from the 1st of September onward where the surf is pretty much a write-off. Don’t expect much to change.
Rusty.
