The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Wurtulla. Honest truth? The next couple of weeks look pretty ordinary. There’s no barnstormer on the cards, but a few sessions might give you something to stand up on if you’re not too fussy. The water’s running at about 68°F, which is a bit colder than average for this time of year.
Things start off on the morning of Friday the 21st of August. It’s glassy with a light SE breeze, and we’ve got 4ft of east swell at 7 seconds – short period stuff. The combined energy is moderate at 182. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
From Saturday the 22nd through Tuesday the 25th, it’s mostly poor. A few glassy windows, like Saturday morning with 3ft of east swell (88 energy), but the waves are tiny and the wind turns cross-onshore quickly. Not worth the paddle.
Wednesday the 26th morning gives us our first real glimmer – clean, cross-off breeze from the NW, 4ft of east swell (165 energy). It’s still ordinary, but you might find a few. The crowds here are “often,” so expect company on those little peaks.
Thursday the 27th morning has more energy – 4ft from the ENE at 8 seconds, 244 energy – but a cross-shore wind and marginal tide make it a miss. The rest of that week and into the next is the same story: small waves, poor wind, and poor conditions.
Then we get a bigger but uglier period. Sunday the 30th morning sees 5ft of ESE swell at 6 seconds (225 energy), clean with a cross-off breeze, but that short period makes it weak. By the afternoon, a fresh S wind at 19 mph kicks up 6ft of messy surf (285 energy). This is more for the kite crew than us paddle surfers. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September see swell push past 7ft (up to 430 energy) with a fresh cross-onshore wind – expert-only and lumpy. Beginners, steer clear of anything over 5ft here.
The final days into early September are a slow fade. Friday the 4th morning looks clean with 3ft of ENE swell (157 energy) and glassy conditions – that’s about the best of the second week. Saturday the 5th morning is also glassy with 3ft (102 energy), but it’s tiny.
So the standout windows are Wednesday the 26th morning for a clean 4ft, and Friday the 4th morning for a glassy 3ft. The rest is mostly a write-off. But don’t lose hope – forecasts can change.
