The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a grim stretch for Wurtulla. The entire 16-day window is a write-off. There’s no single day I’d be genuinely excited to paddle out. We’re looking at a solid 14-day gap of poor surf conditions from the start of the forecast right through to the very end, with no real quality options popping up.
The first few days are a mess. Friday the 17th is a write-off with a risk of thunderstorms, 19 mph cross-onshore winds, and a lumpy 6 ft swell from the SE with a short, weak period of 6 seconds (combined energy 297). That’s a no-go. Saturday the 18th is the closest we get to anything decent, with a 6 ft SE swell and a 9-second period (combined energy 520), and the winds are cross-offshore, keeping things clean. But the forecast still calls it marginal, so it’s a gamble at best. That clean window is short-lived.
From Sunday the 19th onward, it gets ugly. The swell jumps up to 10 ft and 8 ft from the ESE, but with strong cross-onshore winds up to 22 mph, it’s blown-out, lumpy, and dangerous. That’s expert-only territory if you’re crazy enough, but the conditions are just plain poor. The combined energy is massive (over 1600 on Sunday and Monday), but it’s all for nothing with the wind. For the rest of the week, the swell drops, but the wind stays onshore or cross-shore, keeping the surf choppy and messy.
By the time we hit the second week, the swell disappears entirely. We’re talking 1 ft to 1 ft waves from the E with periods of 6 seconds or less. The combined energy is in the teens and twenties. It’s flat. There’s a glassy morning on the 28th, but with only 1 ft on offer, you’d be floating more than surfing. The winds finally turn offshore on the 1st of August, but again, the swell is barely a ripple.
This break is fairly consistent, but when the conditions line up this poorly, it’s a tough run. Still, it tends not to stay this bad forever, so keep an eye on the forecasts. For now, if you’re desperate for a bump, the Saturday morning and afternoon of the 18th might be your only chance for a bumpy, clean-ish wave. Otherwise, this is a two-week stretch best spent tuning up your gear.
Rusty.
