The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Wurtulla over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is looking pretty tough. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak energy and onshore winds that just won’t give us a break. The water's sitting at 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.
The first real glimmer doesn’t show up until Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. It’s nothing to write home about – just 3ft of swell from the east with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 111. But the wind is glassy, calm, and that makes it surfable for the beginners who want to get a few grovelly ones. You’ll have to work for it.
Sunday morning the 23rd is similar – 3ft from the east-northeast with a period bumping up to 8 seconds, still glassy. The energy is still weak at 113. It’s ordinary, but it’s clean.
We finally get a bit of a window around Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. The swell is still small at 3ft, but the wind is glassy again, and it’s clean. Not a standout, but a chance to get wet.
The next real chance comes on Wednesday morning, the 26th of August. Light offshore wind from the southwest, 3ft from the east with a period of 8 seconds, combined energy of 90. It’s clean, but tiny.
Now, you’ll have to wait until the 31st of August, Monday morning. The swell picks up to 4ft from the east-northeast, period is short at 7 seconds, but we’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind from the north-northwest. The energy is moderate at 176. This is the best of the first week, but it’s still not a classic.
The standout, and I mean the only real standout in the whole 16-day window, is Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. The swell is 4ft from the east with a period of 9 seconds, combined energy of 259 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the southwest, making it clean. The guidance says this is the best on offer, and I’d agree. For a beginner-friendly break like Wurtulla, this is the morning to circle. It’s still not massive, but it’s the most surfable quality we’ll see.
After that, we get a pulse of energy on the 2nd and 3rd of September – 5ft and 4ft from the east, period up to 10 seconds, energy jumping to 424 and 335. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the quality is poor. It’s a shame, because the swell has some push, but the wind ruins it.
The window closes with the 4th of September, Friday morning – 3ft from the east, period of 10 seconds, glassy. A small, clean end to the run.
Overall, it’s a flat, frustrating start. The best bet is Tuesday morning, 1st of September. The rest is just a waiting game. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
