The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Whipsiderry.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking like a real struggle. This isn’t a spot that’s going to switch on soon. There’s a long gap of rubbish surf coming up. For the first week and a half, nothing is worth paddling out for. We’re talking tiny, weak slop with junk wind.
The first sniff of anything with some push doesn’t show until Saturday the 25th of July, and even then it’s rough. That morning we see a bit of swell bump up to 4 ft from the west, but a moderate cross-onshore breeze out of the north will mess it up. The combined energy is moderate at 120 (120), but the quality just isn’t there. The whole window from the 14th through to the 25th morning is a write-off – seven or eight days of nothing worth mentioning.
The only time things get interesting is around Monday the 27th of July. That morning the swell hits 5 ft from the west with a period of just 7 seconds, so it's going to be lumpy and weak. That said, the combined energy jumps to a strong 338 (338), but it's blowing onshore at 19 mph from the west-northwest. It’s going to be a messy, blown-out wall. Not for the faint-hearted. Tuesday the 28th afternoon offers a clean-ish window with a cross-off breeze from the south-southwest and 4 ft from the west-southwest, with a combined energy of 251 (251). That’s the pick of a bad bunch, but it’s still ordinary.
If you’re looking for something to get excited about, Wednesday the 29th of July morning sees a 7 ft swell from the west. That’s expert-only territory if anyone is silly enough to try it. Period is short at 7 seconds, combined energy is 420 (420), but the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 19 mph out of the west-southwest and there’s lumpy chop. Only for the kamikaze crew. That afternoon the wind cranks up to 25 mph from the west-southwest with 5 ft and a combined energy of 501 (501). Honestly, that looks more like kite-surfing conditions than anything you’d want to paddle into.
The water temperature is sitting at 65°F on the 14th of July, which is much warmer than normal, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit, but you’ll be sitting there watching junk for most of the month.
Bottom line – don’t get your hopes up. This is one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t cooperating. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long, flat, windy wait.
