The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for our stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the surf situation is pretty grim for a long stretch. We’re looking at a serious dry spell with no decent waves on the cards until the beginning of September. The first week and a half is just a write-off for any kind of quality surf.
So, for Friday the 21st through the end of August, it’s a no-go. We’ve got a mix of small, weak swell and onshore or strong cross-shore winds that are just wrecking any potential. The energy in the water is low, barely registering, and the wind is blowing everything out. It’s the kind of period where you’d be better off finding something else to do.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope shows up on Thursday, the 4th of September. That’s over a week away, so don’t get too excited just yet, but the models are hinting at something. Whipsiderry is the only break on the map, and it looks like it might finally get its act together. On the Friday morning, the 4th, we’ve got a clean, gentle breeze with a cross-offshore wind and a 5ft swell rolling in from the west. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a short-period swell, but it’s manageable. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 296, which is a step up from the dead calm we’ve been seeing. The water is about a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 66°. It’s not a massive day, but after all this nothing, it’ll feel like a gift. The wind will be clean, and the surf should be surfable and fun on a longboard or a fish. Just be aware that crowds are possible there, so get in early.
For the rest of the second week, it’s a mixed bag again. Friday afternoon turns onshore, and the following days drop back into poor conditions with weak swell and onshore winds. That Friday morning window on the 4th is the one and only standout in this entire outlook – it’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Rusty.
