Right, grab a coffee and settle in – I’m Rusty, and I’ll take you through the next couple of weeks at Whipsiderry. To be honest, mate, looking at this, it’s a pretty grim run for a paddle surfer. The forecast is mostly small, onshore junk with hardly anything that’ll get you out of bed. We’re looking at a stretch of days with almost nothing worth mentioning, so we might be waiting right up until mid-July before the ocean even considers giving us a proper look-in.
The opening weekend, starting Sunday July 5th, is a write-off. We’ve got a weak, onshore wind and a tiny 2ft swell from the west, churning up poor conditions. That theme just keeps repeating into the next week. Monday and Tuesday are more of the same – small, messy, and mostly onshore. The combined wave energy is weak, barely hitting triple digits, so there’s just nothing in the water.
We finally see a tiny flicker of hope on Wednesday morning the 8th. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the northeast, and while the swell is still a tiny 2ft from the west, the report mentions clean conditions. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s so small and ordinary. A Wednesday morning sneaky session for a longboard if you’re desperate, but don’t get your hopes up. The combined energy is a measly 88 (weak), and the 9-second period is pretty average.
The following week waffles through more onshore wind and poor surf until we get to Tuesday July 14th. This is the one standout in the whole forecast. We’ve got 3ft of west swell with a moderate 10-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 176 (moderate). The best part? On Tuesday afternoon, the wind goes glassy – dead calm. Zero wind. That’s a major positive for Whipsiderry, and it could clean up those little lines nicely. It won’t be huge, but in a sea of junk, that glassy window is golden. It will still be small, so a fun wave, not a charging wave.
After that, things go pear-shaped again quickly. The wind turns onshore, and then on Thursday July 16th, we see a jump in swell size – 6ft from the north, but it’s short period, around 7 seconds, and being hammered by a strong cross-onshore. The combined energy hits 359 (moderate-to-strong), but that energy is all in the wrong places, making for a choppy, lumpy mess. That kind of size and bad wind is probably more interesting for the kite crowd than for us with paddles.
Then for the second week, from the 17th right through to the 20th, it’s a sorry story of short-period swell and fresh onshore winds. The swell drops back down to knee-high, and the wind just ruins any chance of a clean face. The forecast confidence is low that far out, but the trend is clearly poor. We’re looking at a long, blank run. It’s one of those periods where you just keep your gear in the shed.
Rusty.
