Alright, let’s break it down. The first bit of decent surf we see lands on the morning of Friday the 3rd of July at Whipsiderry. It’s a brief window, mind you. You’ve got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the west with a solid 10-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the WSW. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The combined energy is a moderate 335, which is enough to get you moving. It’s a fairly exposed spot, so it picks up that west swell alright, and it’s a fairly consistent break. The only catch is that it can get a crowd sometimes. After that morning, the wheels come off quickly. Friday afternoon turns to junk with a strong cross-onshore wind at 12 mph, and that sets the tone for a long, dry spell.
From Saturday the 4th of July right through to the morning of Thursday the 9th of July, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell drops off, the winds are all over the place – onshore, cross-onshore – and the wave comment says it all: poor conditions. That’s a solid five-day gap with no recommendations.
Thursday the 9th of July afternoon brings a glimmer of hope. The swell is still small, only 2ft from the west with a 10-second period, but the wind shifts offshore from the ESE at 9 mph. It’s clean. The combined energy is weak at 98, so you’re not getting any power, but it’s surfable in a very ordinary way. Friday the 10th of July morning is similar: 2ft west swell, cross-off wind from the east at 9 mph, and a combined energy of 123 (weak). The afternoon of Friday the 10th goes glassy with a light south wind and rain, still small at 2ft. These are just tiny, clean waves for a longboard or a funboard.
Then we hit another gap. Saturday the 11th of July through Tuesday morning the 14th of July is mostly poor, with onshore winds and choppy conditions. But here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 13th of July sees a pulse of swell, but it’s blown out. By Monday morning, the swell jumps to 5ft from the west with a long 12-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 815. Monday afternoon hits 6ft at 12 seconds and 862 energy. But the wind is onshore, strong at 12 mph, so it’s a total mess. That energy is wasted. If that wind had been offshore, it would have been the standout of the entire forecast.
Looking further out, Thursday the 16th of July morning is worth a mention. The swell is 5ft from the west, 9-second period, with a clean cross-off wind from the south at 16 mph. Combined energy is moderate at 342. It’s considered marginal, but it’s clean. Friday the 17th of July and Saturday the 18th of July see a shift in swell direction to the north, with short 7-second periods and strong winds. Friday has 7ft and 7ft of short-period north swell, but the wind is cross and cross-on. Saturday the 18th of July morning has 6ft from the north, with a clean cross-off wind from the SSW. The combined energy is moderate at 357. Given the short period (7 seconds), this will be a messy, choppy, close-out kind of wave at a beach break. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one.
So, the only true standout? Friday the 3rd of July morning. That 4ft west swell with glassy conditions is your best bet. It’s not big, but it’s clean and the most fun you’re going to get. The long-range pulse on Monday the 13th is promising in size and energy, but the wind ruins it. Thursday the 16th is clean but small and marginal.
