The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Whipsiderry over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – this is a pretty grim run for the most part. There’s a whole lot of poor surf conditions and onshore wind in the forecast, and you’d be struggling to find a decent wave for days on end. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re getting disappointed.
Thursday the 20th kicks things off with a 7ft swell from the west, but with a fresh onshore breeze, it’s messy and poor. Friday is even worse, dropping to 3ft and cross-onshore. Saturday the 22nd is the first real glimmer of hope – we get a 3ft swell from the north-northwest, with a light cross-offshore breeze, making it clean. The energy is weak (122), but it’s surfable, just very ordinary. After that, it’s back to tiny, weak, and onshore for days.
The next real standout doesn’t roll around until Thursday the 3rd of September. That morning, the stars finally align. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the northwest, and the wind is glassy – calm as anything. The combined energy is moderate (331), and the conditions are described as good. This is your window. The swell direction is a bit north of the optimum west-northwest, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean and rideable. It’s a solid intermediate option, but with that size, beginners might find it a bit much.
Friday the 4th of September morning is also glassy, but the swell drops to 4ft from the north, with weaker energy (218). It’s surfable, but nothing special.
So, to be blunt: the first week and a half is a write-off. The only real standout is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. Keep an eye on that one, but don’t hold your breath for much else.
Stay frothy,
Rusty
