The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at the forecast for Unreals over the next 16 days.
Truth be told, it’s a pretty flat run for a while. The first week offers almost nothing worthwhile. Monday the 10th through to Friday the 14th are all write-offs – messy cross-onshore wind, short period swell around 7-8 seconds, and the water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year. The swell energy is weak, mostly in the 170-250 range, so not much to get excited about. The wind is a problem, making conditions choppy and poor.
Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th see a big jump in swell size and energy, but the wind is howling – 19 mph on Saturday and a severe gale at 47 mph on Sunday. That’s not for paddle surfing; if you’ve got a kite, that Sunday might be interesting, but for a regular wave rider, it’s a no-go.
Now, Sunday the 16th afternoon does clean up with a cross-offshore wind and a solid 15 ft east swell (12-second period, very long period groundswell). The energy is massive at 6532, so this is a powerful, clean-looking window. But let’s be real – that size is only for experts. The break here is a reef and point setup, so that long-period swell might actually wrap in nicely and offer some deep barrels, but it’s gonna be big and heavy. This is the standout of the whole forecast, but it’s a serious one. Crowds are often here, so expect a few others with the same idea.
Monday the 17th drops back to 8 ft with a shorter 9-second period and cross-shore wind, making it lumpy. The energy is still high at 1615, but the quality is marginal. After that, from Tuesday the 18th all the way through to Tuesday the 25th, it’s back to small, choppy, and poor – cross-onshore wind, short period, and energy below 350. A real gap of surfable days.
So, the one true standout is Sunday the 16th afternoon. If you’re an expert and you can handle a 15 ft east swell with clean, offshore wind, that’s your window. For everyone else, this is a long stretch of nothing.
Rusty.
