The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Trearddur Bay (Holy Island) has got cooking for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. For the next week and a half, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. From now until the end of August, the swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3 ft to 2 ft, and the energy is weak. We’re talking combined energy values barely hitting double digits, like 8 or 16. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, which would be fine if there was any wave to ride, but there isn’t. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 63°, but that doesn’t help the waves.
There’s a serious gap of poor surf here. We’re looking at day after day of flat, unrideable conditions. It’s not until Wednesday, the 2nd of September, that we finally see a pulse of life. The swell bumps up to 4 ft on the morning, then 5 ft in the afternoon from the SW, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s a short-period windswell, not the cleanest groundswell, but it’s something. The combined energy hits 182 in the afternoon, which is moderate. The wind goes offshore from the NE at 16 mph, which is a major positive for clean faces. The issue is, the commentary says it’s “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so don’t expect perfection. At 5 ft, it’s still okay for most, but it’s not a standout by any means.
The real standout – and I’m only calling it that because everything else is so bleak – is Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. We get a 5 ft swell from the SW, period still 6 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-off from the east at 6 mph. That’s glassy-ish and clean. The combined energy is 170, moderate. Again, the waves are “surfable but very ordinary,” but with the clean conditions, this is probably your best window. The swell is from the SW, which matches the optimum direction for Trearddur Bay. It’s a fairly exposed spot, so it should pick up what’s on offer. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have company, but with this quality, I doubt it’ll be packed.
After that, it fades out again. The 4th of September drops back to 3 ft, and by the 5th and 6th, it’s back to tiny, messy, and onshore. Nothing else worth paddling out for.
So, here’s the bottom line: hold tight until the 3rd of September. That Thursday morning at Trearddur Bay is the only real chance you’ve got in this whole 16-day stretch. It’s not epic, but it’s clean and rideable. The rest of the time, the board stays in the car.
Rusty.
