The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Trearddur Bay (Holy Island) over the next 16 days is a tough one. There’s a long stretch of nothing to get excited about, and honestly, the waves are mostly flat or close to it.
We start off on Tuesday 14 July with a tiny 0.3ft swell from the SW, period a long 18 seconds, but with a NE wind at 15 mph. The combined energy is weak (12). That’s not enough to ride. The water temp is 61°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.
Wednesday 15 July and Thursday 16 July are much the same story – 0.3ft swell, light offshore winds, but zero wave power. The rest of that first week, right through to Sunday 20 July, is a total dud. The swell height drops to zero or dash, and the combined energy is at 0 for several days. There’s no surf to speak of.
We get a little glimmer on Wednesday 22 July morning – a glassy, 0.7ft swell from the SSE, period a very short 3 seconds, with combined energy of just 1. That’s still a flat day. The wind is dead calm (glass) but the waves are barely there. This pattern of tiny, weak swells continues through to Saturday 25 July, with heights of 0.3ft to 1ft, and combined energy never climbing above 9. It’s a poor run.
The only standout, if you can call it that, comes on Sunday 26 July afternoon. A 2ft swell from the SSW, period 5 seconds, combined energy of 21 (still weak). The wind turns cross-onshore from the SSW at 12 mph, making it choppy. It’s not great, but it’s the biggest we get. Then Monday 27 July morning pushes up to 3ft from the SSW, period 6 seconds, energy 74 (weak to moderate), but cross-onshore winds at 15 mph spoil it. The afternoon sees 4ft, same direction, period 6 seconds, energy 69, with onshore wind from the SW at 6 mph. That’s the biggest swell of the whole period, but the wind is onshore and the quality is poor.
Tuesday 28 July and Wednesday 29 July keep the same kind of swell – 3ft to 4ft, short period, cross-onshore winds, and the energy stays in the 40–60 range. Not worth a paddle.
The best recommendation? Honestly, there isn’t one. The entire 16-day window is filled with poor surf conditions. If you’re a beginner and dead flat is your thing, maybe, but otherwise, leave the board at home. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing when the wind picks up.
Rusty.
