Right, grab a coffee, mate, and let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for Trearddur Bay (Holy Island) over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week’s a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions from July 6th right through until July 16th. For most of that time, the energy’s just not there, and when there is a tiny bit of swell, the wind’s mostly on it or cross-on, making a mess of things. It’s frustrating, but it happens. The water temp on the morning of the 6th is sitting at 59.5°, which is about what you'd expect for this time of year.
There’s a glimmer of hope on July 17th. Friday morning sees a bump of 3 ft swell from the SSW, period of 6 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind (16 mph) from the NE. The combined energy is still weak (80), but it’s the first time we see the word “surfable”. It’s very ordinary, but it’s a start. Friday afternoon stays clean with cross-off winds, holding around 3.3 ft, but still nothing to write home about. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th stay similar in size – 3.3 ft and 1.6 ft – but clean with cross-off breezes. The energy is weak, though.
Now, the real talking point is the start of the third week. Monday July 20th morning brings a push of 4.6 ft swell from the SW, with a period of 7 seconds, and clean conditions thanks to a light offshore from the N. The combined energy bumps up to a moderate 171. Tuesday July 21st morning holds similar, with 4.9 ft from the SW, period of 6 seconds, and light offshore winds (6 mph) from the NNW, with a combined energy of 143. The conditions will be clean and the size is there, but the period is short, so it won’t have that grunt you’d want for a proper session. For a beginner spot, 4.9 ft is starting to push the limits for less experienced paddlers.
If I had to pick the standout, it’d be Monday July 20th morning. That’s the best on offer. The swell size (4.6 ft) is solid, the wind is light and cross-off, and the break is fairly exposed to that SW swell direction. It’s still a short-period affair, so don’t expect a long wall, but it’s the cleanest bit of size we’ve got. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue here, so you might get a few others with the same idea.
The rest of that week stays surfable but ordinary. Don't get your hopes up too much for long-range gold, but at least we’re not totally flat.
Stay keen, mate.
