The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around Trearddur Bay (Holy Island). First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat. We’ve got a dry spell from now through most of the month, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re staring at a flat ocean.
Through Friday 17th and into the weekend, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell. Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th have got some 0.3ft dribble from the south, but with periods around 11 seconds, it’s just not enough to get excited about. Combined energy is barely a whisper (2 to 10).
Then from Monday 20th right through to Thursday 24th, it’s a total blank. No swell at all. Zero. Nada. That’s a solid four or five days of nothing.
Now, we do get a little pulse on Friday 25th July, with a 2ft swell from the WNW. The period is a short 4 seconds though, so it’s going to be fat and weak. The wind is light from the NNW, keeping things clean, but the combined energy is only 19 – it’s pretty weak. Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th see a bit more size, around 2ft to 3ft from the SW, with combined energy climbing to 62 on the 27th. Winds are light and mostly cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the period is still short (3 to 6 seconds), so it won’t have much push.
The standout window, and I mean the only real one in this whole 16-day run, is Wednesday 30th July morning and into Friday 31st July. On the 30th, we’ve got a 5ft SW swell early, but hold on – the morning of Thursday 30th is the one to circle. There’s a 6ft NW swell rolling in with a 6-second period, and combined energy of 292, so it’s got some moderate power. The wind is gentle offshore from the NNE, which means clean, lined-up waves. That’s your best bet for a proper session. Friday 31st morning is also solid, with a 7ft NW swell and combined energy of 341, but that’s getting into the size where it’s better for experienced surfers. The wind stays clean, but it’s a touch bigger.
For the beginner crew, the morning of Thursday 30th is your best shot – the 6ft swell is a bit punchy but the offshore wind will keep it clean. Anything over 8ft on Friday is for the experts only.
The long period from the south on the 24th (13 seconds) is a tease – it’s only 0.3ft, so it’s just a ghost.
Overall, the first week is a write-off. The second week has a couple of promising days, but it’s a long way out, so don’t book the time off just yet. The best bet is the morning of Thursday 30th July.
