The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Trearddur Bay on Holy Island.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are lookin’ pretty flat and grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of hardly any surf on offer. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the 24th of July, and even then, it’s a struggle. From the 13th right through to the 23rd, we’re looking at a massive gap with wave heights barely a whisper – mostly 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft, and a lot of days with zero swell energy at all. You’d be better off taking up gardening for that first week and a half.
We do see a tiny pulse of hope on the 24th of July. Friday morning brings a bit of a bump from the SSW around 2 ft, but it’s a short period swell at only 4 seconds, and it’s coming straight onshore. That’s gonna be a messy, choppy affair. The afternoon picks up a little to 3 ft from the SSW, but again, that 4-second period is just windslop, and a 16 mph cross-onshore breeze will make it lumpy. The combined energy is still weak (32), so don’t expect much push.
The 25th of July (Saturday) might be the best of a bad bunch, but that’s not sayin’ much. Morning sees 3 ft from the SSW, with a period of 7 seconds – still a short-period swell. The wind is onshore at 16 mph, so it’s not clean. The combined energy climbs to 62, which is still weak. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a proper surfing day, given the onshore wind and messy conditions.
Through the 26th to the 28th, we’ve got small, short-period swells again (1 ft to 2 ft), but the wind gets nasty. We’re talking strong to near-gale force cross-onshore winds, making it completely blown out. The water temp is sitting at 61°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, but you won’t be feeling it much when you’re not catching waves.
Right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, the 24th and 25th of July offer the most energy, but it’s not a surfer’s swell. The break is inconsistent and best for beginners, so this quiet spell isn’t too unusual for the area. Keep your eye on the forecasts – things can change.
Rusty.
