The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve had a good look at what’s on offer for Trearddur Bay (Holy Island) over the next couple of weeks, and it’s a pretty grim picture, I’m not gonna lie. The whole 16-day window is a complete write-off for decent surf. There’s nothing here that’s worth paddling out for, mate.
The water is sitting at 64°F right now, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
We’re starting now and we’ve got a long, frustrating gap. From Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to the end of the month, there’s just nothing. We’re talking day after day of tiny, weak leftovers. The swell is barely a ripple, mostly around 0.3ft to 1ft, with periods all over the place but no power behind it. The combined energy is in the single digits and low teens – that’s tumbleweed territory. The wind is mostly cross-off or clean, but with no waves, it doesn’t matter. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
The only hint of life comes right at the end of the run. On Monday the 31st of August, the afternoon shows a bit of a pulse with a 5ft swell from the WNW, but the period is a short 6 seconds, and the wind is onshore. The combined energy hits 149 (moderate), which is the highest we see, but it’s still messy. By Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s back to being blown out and lumpy. The very last day, Wednesday the 2nd of September, has a 4ft swell from the NW with a short 5-second period and light onshore wind. The energy is 99 – still weak. But again, the wind is onshore, and the wave quality is poor. It’s not surfable in any meaningful way.
There’s no standout. There’s no "best on offer." The whole stretch is a bust. For an area like this, a blank run like this can happen. It’s a tough spot to rely on. The setup here is a fairly exposed beach, and with the wind and swell mostly out of sync, the whole thing looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle. I’d leave the board in the car for a while.
Rusty.
