The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next two weeks at Trancas Point are pretty ordinary. We’re looking at a lot of small swell and winds that just won’t get out of the way for the first week. Nothing over 0.8m, and most of it sitting around 0.4m to 0.7m with periods all over the shop.

The first real glimmer comes on Saturday the 20th of September. That Sunday morning, the wind drops to glass with light southwest airs, and we see 0.6m of southwest swell with an 18-second period – proper long-period groundswell. The combined energy reads 322, so there’s a bit of juice, but it’s small. Water temp is 23°, which is 5° warmer than usual – that’s very unusual for the time of year, so it’ll feel like a warm bath. This is a point break that rarely breaks, so a clean, glassy morning on a long-period west swell is a real treat. Direction is dead on the optimum from the west, so it should link up nicely. Don’t expect much size, but expect quality.

After that, it’s back to the grind – small, poor, and mostly cross-onshore. Thursday the 25th afternoon gets a cross-offshore breeze with 0.7m from the southwest, but the period drops to 13 seconds and the energy is only 198 – weak. A few clean-ish waves, but nothing that’ll get your heart racing.

Then Sunday the 27th of September, the afternoon turns it on – wind goes west cross-offshore, leaving it clean, with 0.6m from the south-southwest at 12 seconds. Combined energy is 234. Still small, but clean, and given how rarely this spot fires, a clean afternoon is worth the paddle.

So, the best of it is Saturday the 20th morning – glassy, lined up, tiny but clean – and Sunday the 27th afternoon. The rest is a write-off. If you’re a beginner, there’s nothing too big here, but you’ll be surfing mush most days. Keep your expectations low, and you won’t be disappointed.

Rusty out.
