The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a bit of a heartbreaker for Trancas Point. We're looking at a long 16-day window, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch for any decent paddle surfing.
The pattern is flat and messy. We start with a small pulse that’s pretty marginal, then it's a long, long dry spell. From the end of July right through to the second week of August, there are days and days with almost no energy. We’re talking about a huge gap from August 1st all the way to August 7th where the recommendations are just non-existent. It’s a real quiet period.
The only time the ocean shows a bit of life is right at the start. For Wednesday afternoon, July 29th, we’ve got a small 3ft SSW groundswell with a long 16-second period. The water is unusually warm at 73°, which is a big anomaly for this time of year. The combined swell energy is moderate (524). But the wind is a cross-shore at 9 mph, and the wave comment says it’s marginal. It’s surfable, but it's not going to be epic. Thursday afternoon sees a slightly bigger 4ft S swell, still with some energy (609), but again the wind is cross-shore and it’s not clean.
Honestly, if you have a kite, this might be more interesting than a surfboard for most of the period. The wind is often cross or cross-onshore with small chop, and the swell is tiny. The best bet this week is to be realistic – that Wednesday afternoon or Thursday afternoon might give you a few weak runners, but don’t expect much.
As we head into the second week, around August 7th and 8th, there’s a whisper of a groundswell with a very long 19-second period. The swell is still small at 2-2ft from the SSW, and the energy is moderate (290). For a point break like Trancas, that long period could wrap in nicely, but there’s just no size to get excited about. It remains marginal. The same story continues through to the 13th of August; tiny swells, cross-shore winds, and poor conditions. There’s just no standout session to get your hopes up.
