The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Around The Cove, it’s a bleak outlook for the next 16 days. The first nine days are basically a no-go, with next to no surf. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore, making everything choppy and messy. It’s not until the 30th of July that we see a little pulse, so don’t rush to wax your board.
The water temperature is about 86°F, which is roughly 2°F warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a warm bath, but it won’t help the waves.
From Saturday the 18th to Sunday the 26th of July, forget it. Swell is 0.7ft to 3ft, mostly from the SE or SSE, with periods of only 4 seconds – that’s junk. The combined energy is weak, between 16 and 37, so it’s not worth the paddle. The wind is cross-onshore, so conditions are choppy to lumpy. Even the few cleaner days with 0.7ft of swell are just too small.
From Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th of July, the swell drops to 0.7ft, but the wind turns offshore from the WSW, giving clean conditions. The sea is flat – combined energy is only 8 to 13. You’re just floating.
The first real chance comes on Thursday the 30th of July. The swell direction shifts to the NNE, with a bump to 2ft and a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 33. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SW in the morning, so it’s clean. It’s small, but rideable for a longboard or a beginner.
Friday the 31st of July morning is glassy with a light NW wind, no wind at all. The swell is 2ft from the NNE, period 7 seconds, energy at 37. It’s tiny but clean. The afternoon picks up to 2ft, but the wind goes onshore from the ESE, making it messy.
The standout is Saturday the 1st of August. Morning is glassy with zero wind, the swell is 2ft from the NNE, period 8 seconds, and the combined energy is 64 – the highest of the whole forecast. This is the best window. Conditions will be clean and glassy, perfect for a morning session. The afternoon stays around 2ft but the wind goes onshore, so get it early.
Sunday the 2nd of August drops back to 2ft, with a light cross-offshore wind from the NNW in the morning, keeping things clean. The energy is back to 33. It’s not a standout, but still a decent small wave session.
So, the best bet is Saturday the 1st of August morning at The Cove, with that glassy, clean, 2ft NNE swell – it’s the only true standout in the whole 16 days. The rest is either too small, too windy, or both. Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up.
