The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I’ve got to be straight with you: the next 16 days at The Cove are pretty bleak. The swell just doesn’t show up with any real size or energy, and the wind is mostly junk. There’s only one spot on the map, and it’s a beach and reef setup that’s fairly exposed but needs a NNE swell direction to really shine—and we’re not getting anything close to that.
The forecast starts on Wednesday, 15 July, with a tiny 1 ft wave from the NE, period a weak 7 seconds, and onshore wind from the ESE at 9 mph. The combined energy is a feeble 25, and the water is sitting at 86°F with a normal temp anomaly of 2°F—so about average for this time of year. It’s poor, mate. Thursday morning, 16 July, is the only time the wind goes glassy, WNW at 0 mph, but the swell drops to 1.0 ft from the NE, period 7 seconds, and energy is just 8. Dead flat, clean but flat. Thursday afternoon and Friday, the wind gets messy, and the swell stays tiny. Saturday and Sunday, 18 and 19 July, are more of the same: 0.7 ft to 2 ft waves, mostly cross-onshore, and energy barely cracking 20. The period is short, 4 seconds, so the waves are weak and choppy.
The second week doesn’t offer any hope. From Monday, 20 July, right through to Wednesday, 29 July, every session is a bust. Swell sits between 0.7 ft and 2 ft, period mostly 4 seconds, and the wind is a consistent cross-onshore from the SE or ESE at 6 to 12 mph. Energy values are in the single digits or low 20s—weak. The only flicker of something different is on Thursday, 30 July, when the morning has a light cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 3 mph, but the swell is just 0.7 ft from the ENE, period 8 seconds, energy 8. It’s clean but flat.
There’s no standout session here. The only reason to paddle out would be a glassy Thursday morning, 16 July, at The Cove, for a chance at a clean, tiny wave—but it’s barely surfable. The rest of the 16 days is a gap of poor surf, with nothing to recommend. If you’re in the area, this setup looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle, given the consistent onshore wind and small, weak swell. For the surf, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
