The Lowdown
Right, let's have a look at what’s on the table for The Cove over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty quiet run. The whole 16-day window is basically a flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for. There are no good surf options at all here—every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean just isn't cooperating. The first real chance of anything comes right at the start on Friday morning the 21st of August, but with only 0.7 ft of swell from the ENE, you’d be lucky to even get a ankle-biter.
The water’s sitting at a warm 87° which is about normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
Friday morning the 21st has some clouds and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW at 3 mph, so the surface would be clean enough, but the combined wave energy is only 9 (weak). That’s tiny, gutless swell. Friday afternoon sees a risk of thunderstorms and a 9 mph cross-onshore from the SE chopping it up even more.
Saturday the 22nd is more of the same—tiny 0.7 ft again, with a glassy morning on Sunday the 23rd under light SSE winds, but still no power behind it. The combined energy is just 8 (weak). After that, it’s a long grind of onshore winds, mostly from the ESE or E, with swell heights barely scraping 2 ft through the end of August. The biggest combined energy you’ll see all window is 42 (still moderate at best) on the morning of Friday the 28th of August, with a 0.7 ft swell and a 13-second period, but it’s cross-onshore and messy.
For a beach-and-reef setup like The Cove, this kind of run isn’t unusual—sometimes the ocean just goes to sleep. It’s a desert out there. If there was any significant swell, given the poor quality and onshore wind, this setup would look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, but right now there’s nothing for anyone.
Stick to the sand for now, keep an eye on the charts, and hope the next system breathes some life into it.
