The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Terry’s Cove over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up – I gotta be honest with ya. The outlook for Terry’s Cove is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves for the better part of the first week and a half. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, mostly sitting between 2 and 15 (weak energy), so don’t expect to be doing much more than floating around. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The first real glimmer of anything happens on Thursday, July 23rd, thanks to a glassy morning. Wave height is still a measly 2ft from the S with a short period of 4 seconds, and the energy is only 10 (weak). It’s clean, but there’s just not enough push.
Things start to look a little more interesting heading into the end of the month. On Friday, July 31st, we see the swell start to build. The morning brings a 1ft SSE swell with a period of 8 seconds and energy climbing to 38 (still weak). The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’s not perfect. By the afternoon, the swell bumps up to 2ft from the S at 7 seconds, with energy hitting 54 (weak). It’s still a cross-shore wind, so it’s a bit messy.
Now, the standout – and I mean the *only* real standout in this whole 16-day window – is Saturday, August 1st. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy finally hits a decent 137 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit choppy, but this is the most size and power we’re gonna see. It’s a sandbar break, so it should be offering up some fun, punchy little waves. Just keep in mind crowds are possible here, especially when it’s the best option around. The moderate cross-onshore wind will put a bit of a bump on the face, but it’s the pick of the litter.
For the rest of the run, it’s a whole lot of small, weak, and choppy. With the swell being so small and the period short, it’s a tough stretch for a paddle. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a traditional surfer on most days. Don’t get too down, though – it tends not to stay this flat forever, and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
