The Lowdown

Right, listen up. Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got to be straight with you: it’s looking pretty bleak. There’s absolutely no swell on the cards for the entire 16-day window. Not a single wave worth paddling for. Zero energy. The combined energy readings are all at 0, and the wave comments don’t pull any punches – “poor surf conditions” all the way through.

So, what does that mean? We’re looking at a proper flat spell. From now until the 22nd of August, you can leave the boards in the shed. There’s no standout day, no sneaky swell to hope for. It’s just flat. The winds are all over the place, but without any swell, it doesn’t matter if it’s offshore or cross-shore – it’s all just a waste of a good breeze.

The one spot we’re looking at is Southside (Southside-1). It’s a reef and point combo, and it’s fairly consistent, which means it’s usually the first to pick up any pulse. But even it is showing nothing. The water temp is about 56° and that’s pretty average for this time of year, so nothing strange there. It’s just a stubborn, drawn-out flat spell.

If you’re a beginner, don’t worry about it being too big – there’s nothing. If you’re an expert, there’s nothing for you either. Honestly, this looks more like a blank run that can happen in this area. Normally, I’d say it won’t stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. There are no good surf options in this window. Save your energy, fix your fins, and wait for the next system.

Rusty.

Information about the Southside Surf forecast

The above surf forecast table for Southside provides essential information for determining whether the surfing conditions will be good over the next 16 days. A general guide to surfing at Southside can be found by selecting the local surf guide option on the grey menu. Our Southside surf forecast is unique since it includes wave energy (power) that defines the real feel of the surf rather than just the height or the period. If you surf the same spot (Southside) regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone combined with our forecast of favourable offshore wind conditions. Our star ratings will help here and of course you will also find the usual wave height and period predictions on our surf forecasts as well as a full break down of the swell components under our advanced users option (to reveal that, click the little Einstein character under the tide times).

Further information to help with frequently asked questions about our surf forecast for Southside may be found under the help tab on the top menu and also by moving your mouse over the question marks on the surf forecast table itself. Please always bear in mind that the forecast is for near-shore open water and local factors at each surf break influence the actual breaking wave height, such as the beach / reef profile, water depths offshore and shelter.

Southside is 26 km (16 miles) from the city of Geelong. If you plan a holiday in Torquay, look for hotels and other accommodation in Geelong. Geelong has rooms for a wide range of budgets as well as car hire and transport links.
