Table - best surf conditions forecast for Santa Maria de Oia over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this is a tough outlook for Santa Maria de Oia (Spain). We’re looking at a 16-day window where the surf just doesn’t want to cooperate. The first solid recommendation doesn’t roll in until Tuesday morning, July 14th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
For the first few days, it’s a write-off. Friday the 10th through Sunday the 13th are all "poor surf conditions" with tiny, weak swell. The energy is basically non-existent, with values like 95 and 88 (weak energy). You’d be wasting your time.
The first glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday morning, July 14th. We’ve got some tiny 1 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a bit of a longer period, which normally means better shape, but the size is just too small. The wind is light and cross-off from the S, keeping things clean. The combined energy is a weak 64. It’s described as "surfable but very ordinary," which is being generous. I’d give it a pass unless you’re truly desperate.
Wednesday morning, July 15th, is much the same story: 2 ft from the W, clean with cross-off winds, but the energy is still weak at 72. It’s just not enough to get excited about.
Then around the 18th and 19th, we see a spike in swell size. Saturday afternoon, July 18th, brings a 5 ft NW swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the wind is a strong 30 km/h onshore from the NNW. The energy jumps to 151 (moderate), but with that wind, it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess. Sunday afternoon, July 19th, pushes 5 ft from the NNW, but again, onshore winds and a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is stronger at 307, but the quality is still "poor."
The biggest pulse shows up on Saturday, July 25th. Morning sees 6 ft from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds – that’s getting into the zone where it’s a bit much for beginners, but okay for intermediates. The combined energy hits 480 (moderate to strong). But here’s the kicker: the wind is a moderate 20 km/h cross-onshore from the N, which will chop it up. The afternoon is similar at 5 ft, but the wind stays onshore. It’s frustrating because the swell has some guts, but the wind just won’t cooperate.
Given the constant onshore and cross-onshore winds, this setup is honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period. For a specific call? There’s no standout. If I had to pick a moment, it would be the Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (14th & 15th) for the cleanest conditions, but you’ll be on a longboard scratching for ankle-biters. The real swell in the second week (like the 25th) is too wind-affected.
Signing off, Rusty.
