The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Santa Maria de Oia over the next sixteen days.
First up, the water temperature here is sitting right around 67°, which is about average for this time of year. No surprises there.
The forecast is a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some definite windows where it'll be worth getting wet. The best of the whole run looks like it's shaping up for Sunday the 23rd, and then again on Monday the 24th. On Sunday morning, we've got a clean 5ft swell wrapping in from the west with a 10-second period, and the combined wave energy is a solid 469 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, which is going to keep the surface tidy. The afternoon holds similar, with a 5ft swell from the WSW and that same clean cross-off wind. It's a good, solid session.
Monday the 24th morning is another standout. The swell pushes up to 6ft from the southwest, with an 8-second period and a combined energy of 409 (moderate). The wind is a clean offshore from the SE – a gentle breeze – so expect some nice, open faces. Just a heads up, this is an advanced reef break, and it can get crowded sometimes, so be ready for some company. With the swell over 5ft, it's a bit too much for beginners.
Saturday the 22nd is a bit of a write-off. The morning is only 3ft from the NNW and the conditions are just ordinary. The afternoon is even smaller and weaker.
There’s a gap of a few days of poor to marginal conditions from the 25th through to the 28th, with lumpy winds and onshore slop. The 29th and 30th are also a bit of a bust with onshore winds.
Now, looking further out, there are a couple of promising days. On the 31st of August (Monday morning), we see a 4ft swell from the NW with a 9-second period, a 268 combined energy (moderate), and clean cross-off winds from the SSW. That’s a solid option.
The 2nd of September (Wednesday morning) also looks good: 5ft from the west, 8-second period, 303 combined energy (moderate), and clean cross-off winds from the SSE.
But the absolute best of the second week looks like Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning session is glassy – a dead calm wind from the north – with a 5ft swell from the west and an 8-second period, giving a combined energy of 294 (moderate). That's the kind of morning you wake up early for. The afternoon turns onshore, so get it while you can.
And then to finish the run, Saturday the 5th of September (morning) is another glassy gem: 4ft from the NW, 9-second period, and a combined energy of 265 (moderate). A perfect way to end the outlook.
So, to sum it up: the best windows are Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, with Thursday the 3rd of September as the standout long-range promise. The forecast for the second week is a bit less certain, but the signs are good.
Rusty out.
