The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s on offer for Santa Maria de Oia over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, the surf is flat as a pancake – tiny, weak swells and no real push. From Sunday 19 July right through to the end of the month, most days show nothing but poor conditions. The odd morning might have a clean little ripple, but it’s barely worth wetting a suit. That’s a solid stretch of nine or ten days with next to no surf.
Then things finally start to change around the 28th. Tuesday 28 July sees a jump in size – 7 ft to 8 ft from the NW, with a period around 10 seconds and combined energy climbing to 959–1172 (moderate to strong). The problem is the wind: it’s onshore or cross-onshore, so the surface will be messy. Advanced crew might find something if they’re desperate, but it’s not clean.
The real standout is Wednesday 29 July morning. That’s when the stars align: a 7 ft swell from the NNW, period 10 seconds, combined energy 756 (moderate), and the wind goes glassy – light easterly at 3 mph. The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is about average for the time of year (anomaly only +0.5°F). Santa Maria de Oia is a reef, advanced wave, and it sucks up longer-period groundswell nicely. That 7 ft is meaty enough to get the blood pumping, but not so big that it’s out of control – though beginners should steer clear. The glassy conditions will make it clean as a whistle. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect a few locals out, but with that clarity it’ll be worth the company.
The afternoon of the 29th switches to a cross-onshore wind, and the quality drops. After that, Thursday 30th has some 4–4 ft leftovers but with cross-onshore breeze, nothing special. The rest of the first week of August looks small and poor again.
So, if you’re after a paddle, wait for Wednesday 29 July morning. That’s the one.
