The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s ahead for Santa Maria de Oia.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough outlook. This spot is a shallow reef break that needs a specific angle of swell, and over the next couple of weeks we just don’t have anything lining up right. The first recommendation doesn’t come until Monday the 20th, and even then it’s only a 1.9ft swell out of the NNW with very moderate wave energy (65). It’s described as “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s not exactly sending it. Before that, the first few days are a bust—Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th offer tiny 1.0ft to 2.0ft waves, poor conditions, and a lot of glassy or light cross-offshore wind that doesn’t matter because there’s simply no swell to work with. The water temp is 63.3°, which is about 1.6° cooler than average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
From Monday the 20th onward, we see a slow, frustrating grind. On the 20th morning we get that 1.9ft NNW swell, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the energy is weak (65). The afternoon goes cross-shore and loses any appeal. Tuesday the 21st drops back to 1.0ft. Wednesday the 22nd has glassy conditions in the morning on a 1.3ft WNW swell with a 10-second period, but the energy is only 49 – barely a ripple.
The pattern stays locked in this rut for days. A few mornings offer glassy or clean conditions (23rd, 24th, 25th) but the swell is stuck at 1.0ft to 1.6ft. The winds shift onshore or cross-onshore in the afternoons, ruining any chance of a decent session. This is pretty much a two-week gap with nothing that qualifies as a real surf day. There’s one small pulse on the 27th July Monday afternoon, where the swell bumps to 3.9ft out of the NW and the energy climbs to 187 (moderate), but the wind is howling onshore from the NNW at 12 mph and the period is a short 7 seconds. That’s messy, blown-out junk. It shores up as more of a kite surfing setup than a paddle session.
The end of the month gets a little weird. On Wednesday the 29th, an ENE cross-offshore breeze keeps things clean with a 1.6ft W swell, but the energy is still low (76). The one day that might almost catch your eye is Thursday the 30th morning – glassy conditions, a 3.6ft W swell with a short 8-second period, and the energy jumps to 142. That’s the single best window in the whole outlook. But it’s still small and short-period, and the afternoon gets crushed by an onshore 16 mph NNW wind.
The final day, Friday the 31st, shows a 4.6ft NW swell in the morning with moderate energy (370), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The afternoon pushes to 4.9ft with 445 energy (strong) but the onshore wind ruins it. That 4.9ft is getting into territory that’s too much for beginners, and with no clean wind, it’s just a washing machine.
Honestly, this is a blank run for Santa Maria de Oia. No standout days. No hidden gem sessions. If you’re in the area, keep the board in the car for a look on the 30th morning, but don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can always change, but as it sits right now, there’s not much to get excited about.
