The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch of coast for a bloody long time. Let’s get into it.
The outlook for the next 16 days is a flat, frustrating story for the most part. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly any rideable waves, so don’t bother checking the cams every morning. The first real flicker of life doesn’t show up until July 28, and even then it’s ordinary. The first genuine surfable window comes through on July 29, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
Rocky Rights/Lefts and Gas Chambers (beach and reef) is the only spot on the cards, and it’s a mixed bag. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
From July 16 right through to July 27, it’s a flat-out drought. The combined wave energy is tiny – often below 100 (like 11, 40, or 85) – and the swell heights are mostly under 2 ft. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, but it’s a waste of good wind when there’s nothing to surf. The setups here are exposed to NW swell, but the direction we’re getting is mostly from the west or northwest, with short periods around 7 to 14 seconds, so it’s limp and weak.
The first real pulse shows up on July 28. Tuesday morning brings a 4 ft swell from the north-northeast, period around 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 138 (moderate). It’s still a cross-shore wind, gentle breeze, but it’s a bit messy. It’s not a standout, but it’s the first sign of life. It’s clean enough to get a soggy session in, but don’t expect much.
The best of the whole run lands on July 29, Wednesday. Morning sees a 3 ft swell from the north-northeast, period 7 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the east at 10 km/h. The combined energy is 53 (weak), but it’s clean, the wind is light, and the conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary”. That’s the pick of the litter, but it’s still a long way from pumping. The swell direction isn’t an ideal match for the optimum NW direction, so the waves will be a bit average. It’s not too big for beginners, but it’s not exciting either.
July 31, Friday, sees a jump in energy – 4 ft to 4 ft from the northeast, period 10 seconds, and combined energy of 256 (moderate). The morning is clean with a moderate cross-off breeze, but the afternoon turns cross-shore and messy. This is the biggest swell of the window, but it’s let down by the wind. It’s a marginal call, and the best part of that day is the clean morning session.
Overall, there’s no true standout. July 29 and July 31 mornings are the least bad options, but neither is a winner. The consistency is poor, and the crowds at Rocky Rights/Lefts and Gas Chambers are sometimes an issue, but honestly, with this much flatness, you’ll have the place to yourself.
Rusty.
