The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Riet River, a point break that needs a specific swell to show its stuff. It’s inconsistent, meaning it takes the right conditions to fire, but when it does, it’s a treat.
Right off the bat, Wednesday morning the 19th looks like a solid start. A clean 8ft SSW groundswell, period hanging around 12 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the north. That’s a recipe for some excellent, clean waves. The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year. The combined energy is pumping at 1604, so there’s plenty of push. This is a standout for the first week.
By Thursday afternoon, the swell packs a punch. We’re looking at 12ft of SSW groundswell, period a juicy 14 seconds, and the wind is a gentle cross-off. The energy is massive at 3877. This is not for the faint of heart; it’s strictly for experienced surfers who can handle a proper point break grinding. This is the other true standout of the whole forecast.
Friday morning the 21st has some potential with 7ft SSW swell and an onshore easterly wind, but the quality takes a hit. By Friday afternoon, the onshore picks up and it’s a write-off.
Saturday the 22nd is a mess. Strong winds, messy swell. Sunday the 23rd bounces back with a clean 10ft SSW swell and a nice 12-second period, but the wind is cross-off. It’s still good, but not as clean as Wednesday or Thursday.
Monday the 24th is a solid end to the week. A clean 7ft SSW swell with a gentle cross-off wind. A good option for the more experienced intermediate surfer.
Tuesday the 25th is a real tease. A beautiful morning with 8ft SSW groundswell, a 14-second period, and proper offshore wind from the west. The energy is strong at 1889. It’s clean and glassy. But the afternoon swings around to a messy onshore, so it’s a morning-only mission.
The second week gets shakier. There are a few days with clean surf, like Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th, but the swell drops to around 4ft to 5ft. It’s rideable, but nothing to get too excited about.
Then we get a big pulse around Saturday the 29th with an 12ft SW swell, but it’s paired with a strong cross-off wind. The energy is a massive 3294, but the wind takes the shine off. Sunday the 30th is a total loss with a near gale and heavy rain. The outlook then fades away with strong winds and poor conditions through to the start of September.
The real bright spot in the second week is a wildcard. Look at Thursday the 3rd of September. A 13ft SW groundswell, a 13-second period, and dead calm, glassy conditions. The energy is a staggering 4891. This is a world-class setup for experts only. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it has the potential to be the best day of the entire 16-day run.
