The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a proper look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a bit of a flat spell for our stretch of coast. The first real chance of anything surfable kicks off on Wednesday the 19th of August, but I wouldn’t get too excited just yet.
Alright, so Praia do Pecem is where we’re looking, and honestly, the whole 16 days is a bit of a grind. There's no standout, none at all. The swell is coming in from the east and east-northeast, but the period is short, just 6 to 7 seconds - that’s windswell, windswell, windswell. It won’t have much push or shape, more like a bumpy mess. The combined energy is moderate at best, peaking at 450 on Friday morning the 21st, but even that poor surf conditions tag tells the story.
The wind is the main problem. It’s blowing from the east and southeast at 15 to 19 mph, and it’s never truly offshore. Most of the time it’s a cross or cross-off breeze, which will just chop up the surface. The water temp is 81°F with a 2°F anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort.
There are a few mornings with a clean cross-off wind, like Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st, and Monday the 24th, but the swell is still small, weak, and short-period. For a beginner, the 4 to 5ft range might be okay, but the lack of quality will make it a frustrating paddle. For anyone else, it’s pretty forgettable. This is a beach-break setup, and with the onshore-ish wind and poor surf quality, it honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddling into these little lumps.
From Saturday the 22nd right through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, the pattern stays stuck: 4 to 5ft of weak, short-period windswell with that constant cross-shore wind. The last few days, the 3rd of September, see a slight bump in energy to 263, but again, it’s just more of the same. There’s no hidden gem here. The crowds are listed as "sometimes", but with surf this average, it’s unlikely to be a zoo. It’s just a long, blank run of poor conditions, and for this area, that’s pretty normal.
