The Lowdown
Gutted, folks. I’ve been staring at the charts for Praia do Meio (Rio Grande do Norte) and, plain and simple, there’s not a single good surf option in this entire 16-day window. The Finder is a total blank, a big fat zero all the way through. The guidance file backs that up too, so this isn’t just me being picky. It’s just one of those runs where the ocean locks up and says “not today.”
We’re looking at a solid two and a half weeks of poor conditions. The swell is mostly small, weak, and short-period junk—think 2ft to 6ft with periods of 6 to 8 seconds. That’s just wind chop and bump, no real push or shape. The energy readings tell the same story: most of the time we’re seeing weak to moderate numbers in the 70 to 590 range, which is basically nothing to get excited about. There is one brief pulse around the 26th and 27th of August where that energy jumps up—1058 and 1297—and the period stretches out to 17-18 seconds, which is proper groundswell. But here’s the kicker: the wind is a mess. It’s blowing cross-onshore at 12 to 15 mph, and the wave comment just says “poor surf conditions” the whole time. So even when there’s some juice, it’s going to be lumpy, chopped, and basically unsurfable.
The constant onshore and cross-onshore winds out of the ESE and E are just killing it. Even on the mornings that are clear, there’s no let-up. The only time we see anything remotely offshore is a brief window on the 22nd of August with a NE cross, but the swell is only 3ft with a 7-second period. That’s not a wave; that’s a ripple.
Because this is a river-mouth setup, it can handle a bit of swell, but not like this. With the strong cross-onshore winds and that messy, weak swell, it honestly looks like this stretch of coast might be more interesting for the kite crew than for us paddle surfers. Stick the board on the roof and find a lake, because the ocean here is just not cooperating.
Hang in there. This kind of blank run isn’t forever, and the forecasts can shift. But right now, there’s nothing to get on.
Rusty.
