The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Praia do Meio over the next 16 days is a tough one. Where do I start? Well, the truth is, we’re looking at a real flat spell for the most part. The first solid recommendation for a surf comes later on, but before that, we’re dealing with a whole lot of nothing good.
From Monday, July 20th, right through to the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The swell is there, but it’s a messy, short-period SE windswell with periods around 7-8 seconds. The wind is mostly cross-onshore from the East, chopping everything up. It’s just poor surf conditions day after day. The combined energy of all swells is mostly in the low hundreds to even just two digits, which is weak to moderate at best, but it’s all junk. Don’t even bother paddling out.
We finally get a little flicker of hope rolling into the first week of August. On Saturday, August 1st, the swell picks up a touch. The afternoon session sees a 4.6ft swell from the ESE, but the period is still a short 7 seconds. The wind swings onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’s still not ideal. The combined energy jumps to 326, which is moderate, but the quality just isn’t there for a proper paddle session. It’s looking more like a day for the kite surfers to have a go, honestly.
The best chance, and I’m saying this with a heavy heart, is on the morning of Monday, August 4th. You’ll get a 4.3ft swell from the ESE, period at 8 seconds, and the combined energy is 192. The wind is still cross-onshore from the ESE at 12 mph though, creating choppy conditions. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the most consistent energy we see in the whole window. If you’re desperate, you might get a few lumpy ones. The water temp is sitting at 79.2°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no worries there.
Don’t expect much else. This is a blank run for the area. The forecasts can change, but right now, the ocean is just not playing ball at Praia do Meio.
