The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Praia do Meio.

Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is pretty bleak, with no real standouts to get excited about. The water’s sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, so that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about.

The first sniff of anything that might be worth a look doesn’t show up until Monday the 17th of August. That morning, we’ve got a southerly groundswell rolling in at 3 ft, but with a very long period of 18 seconds combined with a 16-second secondary swell. The combined energy is solid (377), but the size is tiny. The real kicker here is the wind: glassy conditions, with a slight air from the ENE. That’s the closest we get to clean surf. The swell direction is from the south, but the optimum for this river mouth is from the south, so it’s a decent match. Don’t expect a lot of power at that size, but a long-period groundswell like this can wrap in and offer a few clean, lined-up waves, especially since it’s a river break. It’s not a day for beginners, but it’s not too big either. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have a few others with the same idea.

The rest of the period is a write-off. From the 3rd of August right through to the 16th, every single forecast is marked as "poor surf conditions." You’ve got a persistent onshore or cross-onshore wind from the east and southeast, messing up the surface. The swell is small, mostly under 5 ft, and the period is short, around 7 to 9 seconds, meaning weak, choppy waves. The combined energy varies from 76 (very weak) up to 807 (strong), but with the wind all wrong, it doesn’t matter. Even the bigger pulse on the 14th and 15th of August (6 ft and 5 ft) is blown out by moderate onshore winds. For a beach and river setup like this, that’s more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing.

So, to sum it up: you’ve got a 14-day gap of nothing but poor conditions, followed by one morning on the 17th of August that offers a glimmer of hope with glassy conditions and a long-period swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only game in town.

Rusty.
