The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’m not gonna lie to you—this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle. We’ve got a constant stream of cross-onshore winds messing things up, and the swell is just never quite in the right spot. There’s a lot of no-go, poor surf conditions across the board, so you’ve gotta be patient.
The only spot on the radar is Praia do Meio (river). The water temp is sitting at a comfortable 79°F, which is pretty standard for this time of year, so that’s one small win.
Looking at the start, from Monday the 24th of August right through the first week, it’s a write-off. The wind is from the SE and E, blowing cross-on or cross, and the swell is small, mostly 2 ft to 4 ft, with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate (82 to 753), but the wind just ruins any chance of a clean wave. It’s all choppy or lumpy.
We get a little bump in energy mid-week around Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th, with some longer-period S swell (15 to 17 seconds) pushing the energy up to 707 and 753, but it’s still arriving with that cross-onshore wind. That’s a real shame. A long period groundswell like that would be magic at a point or reef, but here it’s just getting chopped up.
The second week doesn’t offer any relief. From the 31st of August onwards, it’s the same story: small, short-period ESE swell (3 ft to 5 ft, 6 to 9 seconds), with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds. The energy is weak to moderate (118 to 311), and the surf quality is consistently poor.
There’s no standout, no hidden gem, nothing to get excited about. For the whole 16 days, there’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for. If you’re desperate for a fix, keep an eye on the charts, 'cause this kind of blank run can’t last forever. But for now, I’d say leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
