The Lowdown
Right then, let’s see what’s on offer. Well, I gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days look pretty grim for a proper paddle at Praia do Meio. Every single forecast window is marked as poor surf conditions, so there’s no standout session to get excited about. It’s a bit of a flat run, to be honest. The water temperature sits at a warm 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least a dip won’t be a shock.
We start on Monday the 14th of September and the whole first week is just a write-off. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, coming out of the east or southeast, blowing at 9 to 16 mph, and that’s going to chop things up badly. The swell is tiny, usually around 3ft to 4ft, with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds – that’s weak, weak stuff, with combined wave energy sitting between 116 and 153 (moderate at best). It’s just not going to hold together.
Moving into the second week, things don’t improve. From around the 21st of September through to the end of the window, we’ve got a long stretch of the same story: cross-onshore winds, small and short-period swell, and consistent poor ratings. There’s a brief moment on the 24th where the period pushes up to 11 seconds, but the swell height drops to 2ft, and it’s still cross-onshore chop. Combined energy on that one is 166 (moderate). On the 27th of September, the swell height hits 5ft, but the period is a dismal 6 seconds, and with cross-onshore winds of 12 to 16 mph, it’s going to be a messy, blown-out wall. For that day, the energy is 189 (moderate).
Honestly, for a river break exposed to the south, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing through most of it – the onshore winds and chop will at least give some wind-powered fun. But for a surfer? There’s really nothing to recommend. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not all that unusual when the conditions line up like this.
