The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down what’s happening at Praia do Iporanga over the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are a real struggle. Thursday the 6th and Friday the 7th are small and messy, with weak swell and cross-off or onshore breezes leaving the surf ordinary. Not worth the paddle.
Things finally turn on Saturday the 8th. The morning shows a clean 0.8m south swell, and it goes glassy – that’s the key. The energy is moderate at 263, and the wind is dead calm. By Saturday afternoon, the swell pushes to 1.2m from the south, with a very long 14-second period, and it’s glassy. The combined energy jumps to 603 (moderate to strong). This is your first real standout. Praia do Iporanga on Saturday afternoon is the pick early on. The water is 21°, a touch warmer than average for this time of year.
Sunday the 9th morning holds a clean 1.1m south swell with cross-off winds and decent energy. It’s a good session, but not as good as Saturday. Then it gets messy through Monday and Tuesday with light rain and cross-onshore winds.
The next window opens Thursday the 13th. Thursday morning is glassy with a 1.1m southerly swell, 12-second period, and good energy (411). The wind is calm – perfect. Thursday afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze.
But the absolute standout is Friday the 14th of August. The afternoon delivers a 1.4m southerly swell, a very long 14-second period, and a clean cross-off wind. The combined energy is a strong 849. This is very good surf.
Saturday the 15th morning has a bigger 1.8m southeast swell but only a 7-second period, so it’s a bit choppy. The energy is high (950) and the wind is cross-off, so it’s rideable for the experienced.
Sunday the 16th morning is glassy with a 1.8m east-southeast swell, but again the period is short at 8 seconds. The energy is strong (709) and conditions are perfect, but it’ll be a close-out at a beach break.
Monday the 17th morning is the biggest – 2.2m from the east, glassy, with a combined energy of 947. That’s a lot of water. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a beast for experts only. The glassy wind is a huge plus, but it’s not for beginners.
After the 18th, the swell fades fast. The last few days are weak and ordinary.
So, to keep it simple: Saturday afternoon the 8th and Friday afternoon the 14th are the best on offer. The 14th wins with the longer period and stronger energy. Get in the water then.
