The Lowdown

Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Porto Verde is a tough one for paddle surfers. We’ve got a whole lot of flat days and choppy junk at the start, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board.

Looking at the whole picture, there’s a long, dry spell from the 6th of August right through most of the month. The first real pulse of any kind of energy doesn’t show up until the weekend of the 19th, and even then it’s nothing to write home about. We’re talking about a gap of nearly two weeks where the conditions are just poor across the board.

The only spot on the radar is Porto Verde (Oasi-Palazzoni). This is a reef break, but it’s inconsistent and rates as a beginner spot. The early days are a write-off with flat surf and onshore wind. The 19th of August morning sees a bump in the swell to about 4ft from the NE, but it’s coming with onshore wind, so it’s gonna be messy and hard to ride. The combined energy is moderate though, at 120 (moderate wave energy).

The only real flicker of hope comes early on the 20th of August morning. We get a bit of a glassy dawn with a 3ft NE swell. The wind is dead calm, glassy as can be, and the water is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, sitting at 84°F. That’s over five degrees warmer than usual, which is very unusual and feels like a bath. The waves are “surfable but very ordinary,” so it’s not a standout, it’s just the best of a bad lot.

The 21st of August morning cleans up nicely with a gentle offshore wind from the SSW, but the swell drops back to 2ft and short period (5 seconds), so it’s pretty gutless.

Honestly, between the 6th and the 19th there’s almost nothing. The combined energy values are mostly in the single digits or zero, which is weak wave energy. The best advice is to leave the surfboard at home and maybe bring the kite gear if you’re into that, because the wind is more reliable than the waves.

Rusty, signing off.
