The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

Well, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a long dry spell for surf. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Friday the 7th of August, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. The whole run up to that point is a big fat zero, with hardly any energy in the water. There’s a run of totally flat, glassy days with no swell to speak of.

The only spot we’ve got to look at is Portixeddu. It’s a beach and point setup, exposed to the west, so it needs a good westerly swell to work. The optimum direction is from the west, but the swell we get is small and mostly from the northwest.

Now, the first day that even sniffs a wave is the morning of Friday the 7th. We get a tiny pulse of energy, with a combined swell energy of just 94. That’s weak. The swell is 3ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-shore from the NNW. It’s clean, but there’s barely any push. The waves will be small and weak.

The afternoon of the 7th sees the energy creep up to 109 (moderate), with a 4ft NW swell, but the wind switches to a cross-onshore from the NW, making it a bit choppy. Not great.

Saturday the 8th shows a similar story. The morning has 3ft NW swell with a light north wind, giving it a clean-ish look, but the energy is only 78. The afternoon gets choppy again with the cross-onshore wind.

The best of a bad bunch is probably the morning of Friday the 7th or Saturday the 8th. The waves will be small, around waist-high, but the wind is light and the water is warm. The water temperature is sitting at 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s more than 2 degrees above average, so it feels like a bath.

After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf for the rest of the second week. We get a few glassy mornings, like Monday the 10th, but the swell is just 0.3ft. There’s a longer gap of almost nothing until the 17th, when a small 2ft, 8-second swell from the WSW shows up. It’s nothing special.

So, to be honest, there’s no standout day here. If you’re desperate for a paddle, grab a longboard and head out on the morning of Friday the 7th or Saturday the 8th for the cleanest, most surfable conditions. Just don’t expect much power. The rest of the time, the water’s warm and the beach is beautiful, but the waves just aren’t happening.

Rusty.
