Ponte Metalica Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Well, grab a seat and let’s talk about the next couple of weeks down at Ponte Metalica. This is a reef and pier setup that’s fairly consistent, but honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a bit of a grind. We’re not going to see any all-time days, but there’s a glimmer of something on the horizon if you’re patient.

The water temp is running about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there—just your standard summertime suit.

For the next week and a half, the story is pretty simple: we’ve got a persistent, short-period swell—around 6 seconds—coming from the east. It’s pushing in at around 4ft to 5ft. The energy is moderate, with values sitting mostly in the 120 to 230 range. The problem is the wind. It’s not going to let up. We’ve got a cross-shore breeze blowing at 12 to 15 mph pretty much all day, every day. That’s going to put a nasty cross-chop on the surface, making it messy and hard to pick a clean one. The 7th through to the 11th and beyond, it’s just going to be a battle. It’ll be surfable for a strong paddler maybe, but it won’t be fun. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” It’s a lot of chop for not a lot of push.

There’s a couple of brief windows on the 10th and 11th mornings, and a few other mornings, where the wind goes a touch cross-offshore, which cleans it up a little, but it’s still that weak, short-period E swell. The cleanest look might be on the 10th and 11th mornings, but the waves themselves are still pretty average. This is a day for the dedicated, not the casual surfer.

Now, let’s talk about the middle of the second week. We get to the 13th. The morning shows a slight bump to 6ft, and the period stretches out to 7 seconds. The energy jumps up to 310, which is a solid bit more push. The wind is cross-offshore and it’s clean. This is the first real, honest-to-goodness highlight. It’s still not huge, but it’s the best combination of size, wind, and energy we’ve seen. This Wednesday morning is your one to try and sneak out for. The swell direction is E, which is not exactly what this spot loves—it wants something from the N to be at its absolute best—but it’ll be the most fun you’ll have in this stretch.

After that, it settles back into the same pattern of cross-shore winds and 4ft to 5ft, 6-second E slop for the rest of the week. The energy stays moderate, mostly in the 130 to 180 range. It’s not until the following Tuesday and Wednesday, the 19th and 20th, that we see another push. The energy climbs back up, with the 19th showing readings in the 276 range with a 7-second period and clean, cross-off winds in the morning. It’s a similar setup to the 13th—clean but still a short-period swell and still with that E component.

Then, to finish it off, on the 22nd—which is a week from this Saturday—we’ve got another spike. Swell height is 6ft from the ENE, period is 7 seconds, and the energy is 287, with clean, cross-off winds in the morning. It’s rated as marginal, but it’s got the same potential as the 13th. This is a long-range call, so don’t book the time off just yet, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

So, honestly, for the next 16 days, there are only two real windows to get excited about: the 13th and the 19th, with the 22nd as a maybe. The rest is a lot of choppy, average conditions. The size never gets over 6ft, so it won’t be too gnarly for anyone, but the quality is going to be the issue. With all the cross-shore wind, if it gets too blown out, this setup might almost be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. It’s just one of those stretches where you have to pick your moments.
