The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at what we've got for the next couple of weeks. It's a glass half-full kind of situation, I hope.
First off, I'm looking at Ponta Negra. This spot is a consistent, exposed beach break, so it's always got something going on. The water is sitting at a pretty normal 80.4°, about what you'd expect for this time of year. The trouble is, the wind is a real problem. We've got a steady, moderate to fresh breeze from the SE, which is cross-onshore, and it's just chopping the place up. It's a real shame, because the swell is coming through, but it's basically unsurfable.
Looking at the whole 16-day run, it's a bit of a bummer. The first full week, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Saturday the 29th, is a write-off. The wind is just too strong and too onshore to make anything of the 3.6ft to 6.2ft of short-period, 7 to 8-second ESE swell. The combined energy is in the moderate range, hitting 363 on the 24th, but it's all for nothing with that wind. It's a frustrating pattern.
The second week, starting Sunday the 30th of August, the wind actually shifts to a pure onshore direction from the east. It's still a moderate breeze, 12 to 16 mph, so it's still not clean, but it's a slight change. The swell bumps up a bit, with 6.2ft ESE swell on Monday the 31st, showing a combined energy of 459, which is a solid moderate pulse. But again, the "poor surf conditions" tag is telling the story. The period stays short, around 7 to 8 seconds, meaning it's just windslop.
As we tip into September, things don't really improve. The wind swings back to a cross-onshore SE on the 3rd, and we're back to the same old story. The last couple of days of the forecast, the 6th and 7th, the swell actually drops back to 3.3ft to 4.3ft, and the energy fades to 164. It's a flat, choppy end to the outlook.
There is no standout here. The consistent breaks are getting hammered by the wind. It's a tough call, but honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The wind is steady and onshore, and the swell is there, but it's just not for us. Sometimes you have to take the L. The forecasts can change, but right now, I'd say save your energy and give the board a wax for another day.
