Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it's not the most inspiring outlook I've seen for Ponta Negra. We're looking at a pretty long stretch of nothing special, to be honest. The swell's around, but the wind's just not playing ball. For the first week and a half, it's a real struggle. We've got a persistent cross-onshore breeze, mainly out of the southeast, which is just chopping everything up and making for poor surf conditions. You'll see some swell energy, with moderate combined energy readings (648 on Friday 3rd July morning) but it's all a bit messy.
The water temp is sitting at a pleasant 81°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. The water temp anomaly is only 0.4°F, so nothing unusual there.
For the first few days, from Friday 3rd July right through to about Wednesday 8th July, it's a write-off. Waves are in the 3ft to 7ft range, but with that cross-onshore wind at 12 to 16 mph, it's just choppy and crumbly. Not worth paddling out for. The swell period is around 7 to 9 seconds, so it's a windswell mix, lacking that groundswell punch.
Things don't really improve much through the second week either. The swell drops off a bit, with heights hovering around 3ft to 5ft from Sunday 12th July onwards, and the wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore. The combined energy drops to weak levels, like 86 on Wednesday 15th July afternoon, so the ocean's pretty flat and weak. There's no standout day, no window of clean glassy conditions.
The only moment that almost gets interesting is Sunday 5th July morning, when the combined energy jumps up to 1093, a solid moderate reading, with a 7ft swell from the ESE. But the period is only 8 seconds and the wind is a messy cross-onshore 12 mph, so it's going to be a junky, lumpy mess – only really for those who don't mind a washout. For beginners, that 7ft is already pushing into too-big territory, especially in poor conditions.
Honestly, the whole 16-day run is a blank for quality surf. Several days in a row with nothing recommended. It's one of those periods where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the persistent side-shore wind and enough swell to get a kite going.
Ponty is a beginner-friendly, consistent beach break that's exposed to the NE, and it normally gets some fun waves, but this forecast is a tough one. Keep an eye on it though – forecasts can change and it doesn't stay poor forever.
Rusty.
