Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about what’s coming up. Honestly, it’s a tough outlook for Ponta Negra. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for any decent surf. We’ve got a solid gap of clean, rideable waves happening exactly never, so let’s break it down.
Right now, we’re staring at a long stretch of nothing. The first record shows Thursday afternoon, and it’s already a write-off. Ponta Negra is seeing a 8ft swell from the ESE, but it’s getting hammered by a 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the SSE. That’s a mess – fresh, lumpy junk. The wave energy is moderate (829), but that wind is just ruining any chance of a shape. And the water temp is sitting at 81°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re getting blown off your board.
Moving through Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – same story, different day. We’ve got swell hanging around 5ft to 7ft from the ESE, but it’s all cross-on or cross-shore winds from the SSE and SE, with moderate breezes keeping it choppy and poor. The energy drops a bit but stays in that moderate range (300-800 range), but it doesn’t matter when the wind is that messy. By Monday the 6th, the swell drops to around 5ft and the period shortens to 8 seconds, and the wind is still cross-on. No go.
From Tuesday the 7th onward, it’s a slow, sad fade. Swell heights tumble from 5ft down to 3ft by the 17th. The period drops to a weak 6-7 seconds, and the combined energy goes from moderate down to weak (under 100 by the end). The wind stays cross-on or onshore for most of it, with occasional light breezes. We even see a few sessions where the wind goes directly onshore from the E on the 9th and 10th.
We’re talking about a stretch from right now all the way through to the 17th of July with absolutely no standouts. Not a single session gets a recommendation. This break is usually consistent, but this run looks like a total blank. Nothing to get excited about at all. If you’re a kite surfer, you might find some thrill in that constant cross-on wind and lumpy swell, but for a paddle surfer, leave your board at home.
So yeah, conditions stay poor. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, there’s nothing to paddle out for. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
