Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ponta Negra over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at the local surf picture for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’ve got to be straight with you – this isn’t shaping up to be a classic run. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for anything decent. We’re looking at a long, blank stretch with no real surf on offer. The first recommendation doesn’t come until... well, it just doesn't come. The forecast is stubbornly stuck on poor surf conditions from start to finish. That’s a solid 16 days with no recommendations, so don’t hold your breath.
The main issue is that the wind is locked in from the southeast and east-southeast, blowing cross-onshore or onshore for the vast majority of the time. That’s going to keep everything choppy and messy. Even when the swell bumps up a bit around the 18th and 19th of July, with heights hitting 6 ft to 6 ft, the wind is still ruining it. The combined energy climbs up to 392 (moderate energy) on the 19th, but with a short period of 7 seconds and that cross-onshore breeze, it’s just a lumpy mess, not a wave you want to paddle for.
For a beginner-friendly, consistent spot like Ponta Negra, this is a frustrating outlook. The water temperature is sitting at 81°, which is about average for the time of year, so that’s not the problem. The problem is the wind. There’s not a single standout session in the whole run. The swell direction is mostly from the east-southeast, which is a bit off from the optimum northeast direction for this spot, so it’s not even wrapping in cleanly.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the mornings of the 13th and 14th of July look the least offensive, with light breezes and some onshore wind, but the swell is tiny – just 3 ft to 4 ft with a short period of 7 seconds. The energy is weak (104-170). It’s barely worth a look. Honestly, with this persistent cross-onshore wind and building swell later on, the setup at Ponta Negra might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a tough one to call, but this area tends to have blank runs like this, so it’s not unusual. Forecasts can change, but for now, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
