The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next 16 days at Ponta Negra are a bit of a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch where the conditions just aren't coming together for a proper surf. The forecast is showing a steady run of cross-onshore winds that are going to keep things choppy and messy. The swell is there, but it's not the kind of quality you want to paddle out into.
Right now, from Saturday the 22nd of August, the wind is coming from the southeast at 12 mph, making it a cross-on breeze. The swell is a weak 3 ft from the east with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined wave energy is a low 128. It's just poor surf conditions. The water temperature is warm at 80°, which is about average for the time of year, but that's about the only positive.
This pattern just repeats itself day after day. We'll see swell heights bump up to around 6 ft on Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, with energy climbing into the 300s (moderate), but that persistent cross-on wind from the southeast at 12–16 mph is going to keep everything blown out. It's a classic case of "looks better on paper than it does in the water."
We finally get a shift in the wind direction around Friday the 28th of August, going more onshore from the east-southeast. This is an improvement, but the swell period is still short (7–8 seconds), and the models are still calling it "poor surf conditions." The energy is moderate but the quality just isn't there.
The whole first week of September is more of the same. We see a bit more size on the 4th and 5th, with 6 ft swell and energy pushing up into the 400s (moderate), but the wind is going to be a problem. On the 5th of September, we're looking at a fresh breeze from the southeast at 19 mph, which is going to make it lumpy and tough. For a beach break like Ponta Negra, this setup is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The bottom line: There are no standouts in this 16-day window. The forecast keeps showing consistent swell, but the wind is a constant let-down. The conditions are never clean enough to make it worth the paddle. It's a grim run, but it won't stay poor forever. Forecasts can change. Keep your eyes on the charts, because when the wind finally swings offshore, Ponta Negra will have plenty of energy to work with.
Until then, keep your board waxed and your patience high.
Rusty.
