The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a consistent run of small to medium swell coming through, but it’s going to be a battle with the wind. The water is sitting at 81°F which is pretty standard for this time of year, no real surprises there.
The first real chance for a surf kicks off on Monday, August 17 at Ponta Negra. Swell is coming in from the ESE, around 5 ft, with a short, choppy period of 6 seconds. The wind is a solid 16 mph cross-on from the SE, making for poor, lumpy conditions. The combined wave energy is moderate (305) but the quality is just not there. This pattern sticks around all week. The wind stays locked in from the SE or ESE, blowing 12-16 mph, keeping the surface messy. The swell height bounces between 4 ft and 6 ft, still short-period, so it’s all a bit of a chore. This is a consistent break, but with these winds, it’s a real struggle.
We do get a bit of a breather on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23. The wind drops to a gentle 9 mph, and turns more onshore, but the swell shrinks to 3 ft - 4 ft. The energy drops to low (130-162), and while it’s cleaner, the waves are weak and small. Still not worth paddling out for.
The onshore wind pattern returns for the rest of the month, with the same cross-on 12-16 mph winds and choppy conditions. The swell picks up a touch on Tuesday, August 25, to 6 ft (combine energy 339), but the period is still a short 7 seconds, and the wind is 16 mph cross-on. It’s just more of the same: poor surf.
Looking further out, we finally see a glimmer of hope. On Monday, August 31, the swell starts to build, and by Tuesday, September 1, things get interesting. The combined energy jumps to 387 and then 403, with a period stretching to 9 seconds. The swell holds at 5 ft, and the wind is still cross-on, but the longer period means better shape. The direction is still ESE, but the wind is from the ESE too, so it’s a bit of a battle. For a surfer that’s keen, Tuesday, September 1 afternoon is the best on offer in the whole 16 days – a solid, moderate energy swell with a better period. The wind won’t be perfect, but it’s the closest we get to clean.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, the wind is the enemy here. The consistent, short-period swell from the ESE just doesn’t match up with the persistent SE/ESE wind. It’s a frustrating run. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on the first of September, but don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
