Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ponta Negra over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up about Ponta Negra. I’ve looked at the next 16 days, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch. There’s not a single window in this forecast that I’d call a go. Every single session is marked as poor surf conditions, and the wind is your main enemy here.
For the first week, starting Sunday the 12th, we’ve got a consistent 3ft to 4ft easterly swell rolling in, but it’s junked out. On Sunday afternoon, it’s 4ft from the east, period a short 7 seconds, with a cross-onshore ESE breeze at 12 mph. The water is warm at 81°F, which is average for this time of year, but that doesn’t help the mess. The combined energy is weak at 268, and it just looks choppy and uninviting. Monday and Tuesday are a bit cleaner with an onshore wind instead of cross, but the swell is tiny and weak – dropping from 4ft to 3ft, with energy falling as low as 87. You’d be fighting for knee-high lumps.
Mid-week, Wednesday the 15th through the weekend, the swell bumps up a touch – hitting 5ft to 5ft from the east-southeast, with periods still short around 6 to 8 seconds. The energy climbs into the low-to-mid hundreds (up to 361 on Sunday the 19th), but the wind stays a persistent cross-onshore. It’s going to be bumpy, messy, and hard to enjoy. The Saturday the 18th even has a risk of thunderstorms, with winds hitting 16 mph. Not inviting.
Heading into the second week, from Monday the 21st through to Monday the 27th of July, the pattern doesn’t shift. The swell hangs around 3ft to 6ft from the east-southeast, and the period just barely stretches to 8 seconds. The energy does jump to 416 on Wednesday the 22nd, but that’s still moderate, and it’s paired with a 16 mph SE cross-onshore. It’s the same story: poor surf, cross-onshore wind, and a consistent chop.
With that swell size and persistent cross-onshore wind, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Bottom line: there are no good surf options in the 16-day window here. Ponta Negra is a consistent break, so it tends not to stay poor for long – forecasts can change – but for now, you’re better off keeping the board in the car.
Rusty.
