Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ponta Negra over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve looked over the numbers and the outlook for the next 16 days, and I’m calling it like I see it: there isn’t a single session worth loading your board for. Not one. The forecast is a long, grim stretch of poor surf conditions right through.
From Tuesday the 7th of July all the way to Wednesday the 22nd of July, every single window at Ponta Negra is rated as poor. That’s over two weeks with nothing to get excited about. The swell is there, but it’s a mess. Most days we’re looking at weak to moderate wave energy, with the combined energy sitting between 70 and 377, never breaking into anything substantial. The swell direction is coming from the ESE or E almost exclusively, but the wind is the killer. It’s cross-onshore, blowing from the SE and SSE at 12 to 19 mph, turning what little shape there is into a choppy, lumpy mess. Even when the swell pushes up to 5 ft on Tuesday the 21st of July, with energy hitting 348, it’s accompanied by a fresh cross-onshore breeze at 19 mph.
The wave period is short too, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, which means these are weak, wind-driven waves without any punch or form. You’ll see a couple of afternoons where the wind goes “on” rather than cross-on, like Saturday the 11th of July afternoon or Tuesday the 14th of July morning, but the swell is tiny (2 ft to 4 ft) and the energy is low, so it’s not going to save the day.
Now, I get it: Ponta Negra is an exposed, consistent beginner wave, and it’s always a good sign that it breaks often. The water temp is sitting at a warm 81°, which is about average for this time of year, so that’s not the problem. The problem is that the wind is just wrong. With this setup—consistent cross-onshore wind and a beach-break-type wave—this stretch honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Look, this blank run is fairly normal for the area when the trade winds are locked in. It tends not to stay poor forever, forecasts can shift, but right now, there is nothing doing. Put your board away and check back with me later.
Rusty.
