The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, with the imperial rundown. This 16-day window is a tough one for Point North. I’ve got a single spot on the radar, and honestly, it’s a rough ride.
The overall pattern is dominated by a persistent ENE wind that just won't let up, blowing cross-on shore all day, every day. That’s trashing the surface into choppy, lumpy junk. The swell is coming from the ENE too, which is a poor fit for this spot – it’s exposed, but the optimum swell direction is from the NNE, so everything is out of whack.
We start with no surf on offer at all. The first chance to even paddle out comes on Saturday the 9th of August, but even then, it’s a write-off. The swell is a weak 5ft to 5ft from the ENE, with a short period of 8 seconds, combined energy sitting at 247 to 338 (weak to moderate). With a 16 mph cross-on breeze, it’s just messy.
This grim pattern holds through the next week. The wind stays stuck in the ENE, 12 to 19 mph, with the swell bumping up gradually. By the 14th and 15th of August, we see the swell jump to 8ft to 10ft from the ENE/E, with combined energy hitting 906 to 1444 (strong to very strong). Sounds big, but it's all wind-affected junk. The period is still short at 7 to 9 seconds, and with that fresh cross-on breeze, it’s lumpy and close to unsurfable. For a reef and point setup like Point North, that size with those conditions is more of a washing machine than a wave. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The second week is more of the same. From the 16th of August onward, the swell slowly fades from 8ft down to 4ft, but the wind never swings favourable. It’s still ENE, cross-on, 12 to 19 mph, keeping the surface choppy or lumpy. The period barely gets above 8 seconds, so there’s never any real shape or power to the waves. The combined energy drops from 879 down to 150, so it’s just weak, onshore slop.
There is no standout. Not a single session in this 16-day run is worth calling a highlight. The best you could hope for is a lull in the wind, but the data shows nothing but cross-on conditions. Point North is a consistent spot, but it’s rarely this bad for this long. It tends not to stay poor forever, but for now, leave the boards at home.
