The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf on the East Coast of Moreton Island for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty flat and funky run. There’s no real pump on the horizon, just a lot of small, wind-chewed days. The best we can hope for are a few clean mornings with tiny waves. There’s a little bump of energy at the end of August, but it’s messy.
The first real chance at something surfable is Wednesday morning, August 26th. A light west wind will be blowing offshore, making it clean. The swell is a weak 3ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is low at 144. It’s surfable, but very average. The water temp is about 69°, which is normal for this time of year.
Next up is Friday morning, August 28th. A light west-southwest wind gives a clean, cross-off breeze. Swell is a tiny 3ft from the east, 8-second period, with combined energy at 164. You’ll scratch out a few, but you’ll have to work for them.
Then we get a pulse on Monday morning, August 31st. The swell jumps to 6ft from the southeast, but it’s a short period of 6 seconds. That’s a lot of lumpy, wind-swell energy, with combined energy at 409. The morning shows a southerly cross-shore at 15 km/h, which will just chop it up. This setup is more interesting for kiteboarding than for a paddle.
The second week is a washout. The mornings of September 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all have clean, offshore winds, but the swell is tiny – between 2ft and 3ft. The energy is weak. You’ll be on a longboard chasing foam balls. The 5th of September morning has a 3ft south-southeast swell, but it’s a 5-second period, which is just bumpy and weak.
In short, no day is a standout. The cleanest windows are the mornings of the 26th and 28th of August, but the swell is small. If you’re keen for a mushy grovel, Wednesday the 26th morning is your best call. The bigger swell on the 31st is too messy and wind-affected for a fun session.
Rusty.
