The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Moonlight Beach. Look, I’m not gonna lie to you, things are looking pretty flat and uninspiring for the first week or so. We’ve got a long stretch of light wind, which is a positive, but the swell is just weak and disorganized for days on end. The real standout is a long way off, so we’re in a holding pattern for a while.

The first real chance for a wave comes on Friday, August 21st, but it’s a tough one. We’re seeing a small 2ft swell from the SSW with a 13-second period, giving us a combined energy of 255. It’s small, it’s marginal, and the wind is onshore. You might get a knee-high slip, but you’ll be working for it. Friday afternoon and Saturday, August 22nd, don’t offer any improvement; the swell drops off and the conditions are poor.

We then go through a pretty grim stretch from Sunday, August 23rd, right through to Thursday, September 3rd. The swell stays tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surface messy. The combined energy readings are mostly in the 200-800 range, confirming just how weak the wave energy is. There are a few glimmers, like Sunday morning, August 23rd, with a 2ft, 19-second period groundswell, but the energy is still low (362) and the waves are just too small to do anything with. It’s a real waiting game.

Now, the one that’s got my attention is Friday, September 4th. That morning looks like the clear winner. We’re looking at a clean 4ft swell from the SSE, with a solid 16-second period and a combined energy of 1360. The wind is glassy – absolutely dead calm – so the surface will be like a mirror. That’s a rare treat for a beach break. The forecast calls it “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The swell is a bit over 5ft, so it’s starting to get a bit much for the beginners, but for anyone who knows what they’re doing, this is the time to be in the water. That afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5ft, but the wind picks up and the quality drops off.

Saturday, September 5th, is the last day of the forecast window, with a bigger 7ft swell from the S, but the cross-onshore wind will chop it up. It’s more of a power session for the experts than a clean wave day.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off with tiny, weak waves. The one and only standout is the morning of Friday, September 4th, with glassy conditions and a solid, long-period groundswell. That’s your window. Everything else is a marginal struggle.

Rusty.
